We’ve already had a discussion of whether Mark Richt’s 2011 Dogs should be a preseason Top 20 team and, if so, how high, but it’s worth noting that magazine publisher Athlon Sports has tagged Georgia at No. 14 in its Top 25 countdown and sees the Bulldogs winning the SEC East.
Athlon’s optimism about the Dogs ” rests with the influx of recruits [as in Isaiah Crowell], the return of [Aaron] Murray, the second year in the 3-4 defense, and a favorable league schedule that does not include Alabama or LSU — the two top teams in the West. This might not be a vintage Georgia team that is capable of competing for a national title, but the Bulldogs should be in the hunt to win the relatively mediocre SEC East.”
Sounds like a pretty fair assessment, though I’m not sure I’m ready to predict the Dogs winning the division.
Meanwhile, Athlon also takes a shot at listing the Top 10 Georgia Bulldogs football players of the “Athlon era,” which goes back to 1967 (meaning no Frankie Sinkwich, Charley Trippi or Fran Tarkenton).
You know who’s No. 1, but beyond Herschel Walker the choices get interesting: Defensive end David Pollack is No. 2, followed by two-way iron man Champ Bailey, defensive back-rover Terry Hoage, quarterback David Greene, offensive lineman Matt Stinchcomb, defensive tackle Bill Stanfill, defensive back Jake Scott, linebacker Ben Zambiasi and running back Garrison Hearst rounding out the top 10.
OK, hard to argue with most of the names on that list, but what about College Football Hall of Fame member Kevin Butler? Or All-America defensive linemen Richard Seymour and Marcus Stroud?
Should defensive back Scott Woerner get a look? Then there’s receiver Lindsay Scott, a sentimental favorite in the Bulldog Nation; quarterback Eric Zeier, who perhaps doesn’t get the attention he deserves because he played on a couple of pretty mediocre teams; hard-hitting safeties Greg Blue and Thomas Davis; all-around offensive star Hines Ward; and running back Tim Worley. And maybe younger fans will want to make a case for Knowshon Moreno and/or Matt Stafford.
So, is there anyone on Athlon’s list you’d replace? And if so, who would you add?
Find me on Facebook.

It is going to be hard to replace David Greene as my favorite UGA quarterback, but I feel Murray is on track to rival my sentiments for Greene.
The kid really seems to have his stuff together. Follow him on twitter, and you will see how dedicated he truly is to the UGA program.
Murray is bound to have memorable moments like those of Greene as well. I cannot wait til the 2012 and 2013 schedules begin to play out. There are some SERIOUS big-time games in those years.

Bill,
since it is the summer and the topics don’t just land in your lap, it would be interesting to look at preseason rankings versus final results for Richt, Donnan, Goff and Dooley.
I know until recent woes, Richt was doing well at being rated higher at the end of the year versus preseason.
Just a thought.

I’d replace Hearst with Hines Ward, both were great, but Hines’ contributions were more outstanding. He played WR, RB, & QB, and ended up with more all-purpose yds than Hearst NOT including his passing yds as QB.
Some other honoraable mentions:
Rodney Hampton
“Meat Cleaver” Weaver
Tim Worley
Lars Tate
Terrance Edwards
Bryan G.

Greg Blue isn’t even in the discussion. He had the cover skills of Bryan Evans.
It’s hard to leave Moreno off the list with two 1400 yard seasons. It’s not his fault he was redshirted in 2006. Woerner and Ward have to be considered too

Honestly, there have been some many great dawgs over the years, its really impossible to list a “top ten” without leaving off at least another half a dozen deserving DGDs. But then again, that is why top ten lists are so fun to discuss and argue about.
That being said Hines Ward is #2 on my list. He threw it, ran it and caught it…..could have played safey if we needed him to. One of the greatest all around players I have ever seen at the college level.

UGA should not be ranked on any pre-season top 25. Did anyone see the spring game? Or the UCF game by chance? Those were two pathetic performances. 2011 is a total rebuilding job for our offensive line, running backs, full backs, receivers and safeties. 7-5 is best case scenario.

Bill, With A.J. Harmon probably gone, the Dawgs are forced to move Chris Burnette to rught guard. Would you now please name me your 2nd team offensive line. Keep in mind Brent Benedict seriously injured his knee in High School, and is stiill rehabbing. It’s ludicrous that with all the talent available in the state and the JUCO ranks throughout the country, for Uga to be in this position. And to further aggravate the problem, they go out and recruit the 9th rated offensive line class in the conference(per rivals). Go ahead, name your 2nd team.

Tide Roll,
Instead of obsessing over UGA lineman, take a look at your head coach.
How on earth do you lose 3 games with the talent he had on that Tide team last season? Returning Heisman Trophy winning RB, returning BCS Championship game winning QB, 2nd best WR in CFB, stacked defense……..
But Saban manages to CHOKE (24-0 ring a bell?) the season away.
If you didn;t win last year, you sure as heck won’t compete in the West this year.

I am not so sure that a nbr 14 ranking is realistic. It seems they are placing a lot of their expectations on a kid who has yet to play in a college game. No doubt he can probably be great but I am not so sure, he can just step right in and be that much of an advantage to the offense. A lot of pressure to put on a young kid. For sure the Defense will be a lot better, but the offense has to have a few more things clicking in order to merit a top 25 spot. We need to have our O line solidify, our running game solidify, a couple of folks step up at WR, and our QB, though a good one, will have to exhibit a little more patience and not make bad decisions. His job will be easier if he can stay in the pocket and not run for his life. The O line I guess is the real key for the offense though.
I have no vote in the top 10 for UGA all time. Every fan probably has their own favorites and I think it is nearly impossible to narrow it down to 10 folks, given each one played for the most part, on a different team with too many variables to stand head to head with each other. All the folks mentioned were all outstanding players.

Big deal.
Athlon ranks UGA in top 25 last 2 seasons, and UGA didn’t make it by the end of the season.
The 2011 team is worse than the 2010 because of losses of 50% of offense: AJ Green, Durham, Ealey, as well as losing #1 defensive player Justin Houston.
All receivers are inexperienced, UGA doesn’t use the TE, and have no backs that scored more than 2 td’s last season.

TideRoll, i would be worried about Bama’s 2nd team o.l. UGA has (4) stars on it’s second team O.L., compared to Bama’s line of Steen, kelen williams, Shepard, Boswell, and Love. Of those, only Love was rated 4 stars or better. You might be coming to UGA to get o.l., but the 2 you have on your second team line(Williams&Shepard) are 3 stars that weren’t recruited by UGA. UGA signed Benedict,Kolston Houston, and Lee instead, who were all 4 star players. One last thing the kid you keep drowling about Greene wasn’t offered by UGA because they want the 5 star Theus and Humphries instead. Your all world player Greene as you predict is another 3 star. Keep smoking that pipe, and remember the definition of INSANE is doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results. THat sums up your posts.

Wasn’t Jon the one who came back to your booster meeting and said UGA will never win a title based on the fact your program is tanked and you do not play as a team?
These off-season blogs are nothing more than an attempt to distract the deep rooted problems with a program who lost to UCF 6-3 and had not heart to even be there. Instead of hammering on this program and placing pressure on the coaches and the AD, everything is business as usual in Athens….just accept losing and always looking forward to next year.

Hey Bill,
In 2005, the same bull mess was being written about the Dawgs. Can they win with a new QB (DJ Shockley)? Can the Dawgs Defense stop the high powered Boise State? Blah, blah, blah. Georgia won that game 48-13. I fully expect the same outcome this year in the Dome.
I also feel that Athlon has the Dawgs properly ranked as well has made a sound prediction about the SEC East race.
How can you be a lifelong fan and write articles always questioning the Dawgs ability. You either need to decide to be a AJC Sports Writer or a Dawg fan.

“The winningest starting QB in college football history”. What the heck does that mean??? Especially win you are splitting playing time with the backup QB every game. Shockley is the QB that broke all the single season passing and scoring records at UGA.

DJ Shockley was a DFDawg and should be included on any list of the best Dawgs ….. He is the reason why we won a third SEC championship in 25 years…. He could have transferred but didn’t and remained loyal to UGA and for that we owe him the honor of being considered one of the best….. The kid had a heart for the red and black…. Unfortunately others don’t get the example he set….. And you know who I am talking about!!!! Woof

Mr. Phelps without Buck’s 8 yrd pass to l Scott you are right. Buck did so much he threw a ball as far as he did from 2nd Base to 1st Base in a baseball game.

Joel,
Did your shift finish early today at the fast food joint or in your case, is it possible middle school let out early today? Don’t you have homework or a menu to memorize. Go away little boy.

ckgator,
Just had to comment on the “more players have come through Alabama and Florida in the last 40 years than Georgia in the last 80″. What the heck are you basing that on? It sure is hell isn’t fact. Take a look at at any NFL roster. There are more players by a land slide from GA than from Bama, and just as many as ones from FL. GA is a top five state in recruiting. Only behind Cal, FL, Tex, and maybe Ohio, as a matter of fact lately they could easily be considered #4. There are way too many shcools that rely on GA to stack their teams with talent, like Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina, etc. and that’s just in the SEC. Speak of what you know, although it looks like it isn’t much.

As a matter of fact here is some proof.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2008-04-21-draft-database-cover_N.htm
It’s from USAToday.com. Florida actually doubles up GA, but considering there are 3 really major Universities and a few others with some talent like USF and UCF, there should be more. Just so happens if you look at that list, they finish almost exactly in the order I previously stated, Cal, Tex, Fl, GA, Ohio.

Not a UGA fan at all but there have been an impressive number of outstanding players there during my life. I personally can’t see any reason why Scott Woerner wouldn’t be on this or any other list. I watched him play in high school (I graduated from Jonesboro the year after Scott) and he was a phenominal athlete. He should be on this list.

Thomas Brown,
Statistics are not a teller of the future and can easily be manipulated. That is how many schools you have listed there? I think there are 164 div. 1 schools so why not list them all and see how that looks. Statistics are only an good indicator of something when it is a static analysis and things will not change. Other than that, they look good, waste blog space, and prove nothing. 2011 is a new year, with new players and new attitudes. Include 2011 in your statistical analysis after it is over and it could be completely different. What you have is a record of past performance. Not a tool to be used in forecasting future records or goals. Football, isn’t about forecasting based on past statistics.

No one would have ranked Georgia high if they’d known of the Ealey & Harmon transfers.
Most of these pre seaosn rankings were done before this terrible news broke.
If the rumors about Hutson Mason turn out to be true, it could be worse than 2010.

Not saying he should be in the top ten, but the last paragraph mentions Blue… If you are going to mention names that far down the list, Leonard Pope should be in there, too.

Mike (Moon Pie) Wilson should be on this list- he not only was a great all-american, all-sec o-lineman, but a great pro as well. The rest look fine, we have had so many great players since 1967 that it is really hard to choose who the top ten were other than Herschel, David Pollack, Bill Stanfill, Champ Bailey and Terry Hoage in my mind.

Shockley has to be in the top 10 as far as I’m concerned. Though he only started one season, he was incredible. And he was a great role model. Completely unselfish in that he never demanded to start or transferred (though he was certainly talented enough to start at many other schools).
Also, Champ has got to be higher than Pollack.
