I saw where ESPN.com’s SEC blog was polling readers about the biggest in-conference “don’t miss” game of the 2011 season.
Last I checked, LSU at Alabama was way ahead of the pack with 48 percent of the vote, followed by Alabama at Auburn (19 percent), Arkansas at Alabama (14 percent), South Carolina at Georgia (10 percent) and Georgia-Florida in Jacksonville (9 percent).
I was a bit surprised that the South Carolina-Georgia game, which many observers figure could be a big factor in deciding the SEC East this year, didn’t draw more votes. Looks like a lot of SEC West fans read that blog.
Anyway, that got me to thinking about which of UGA’s games (including nonconference foes) should be considered this year’s don’t-miss game.
But then a week later the Gamecocks come Between the Hedges, and the winner of that game will be an early favorite in the SEC East.
Of course, the Gators don’t believe that. Asked this week by a booster in Tampa how his team will do in the division, former Dawg Will Muschamp flatly stated, “Yes, sir, we’re gonna win the East.” Florida’s definitely in a rebuilding mode this season, however, so a lot of folks think the Dogs might have a great chance to notch a rare Jacksonville win.
Which raises another question: Does any win over the Gators trump beating the Old Ball Coach in what may be a more important game for Georgia in terms of conference standings?
What about defending national champion Auburn returning to Athens in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry? That’s always a big game, and with the dirty play on the Plains last year having left a lot of bad feeling on the Georgia side, it’s probably even more so this year. But this won’t be the same Tiger team as last year, by a long shot.
And then there’s the annual grudge match with the Yellow Jackets, this year at Grant Field in Atlanta, where the Dogs embarrassed the eventual ACC champions two years ago. Can the in-state rival ever not be considered a don’t miss game?
They’re all don’t-miss games, frankly, but if I have to pick the biggest one of the season, I’m opting for South Carolina in Athens. The loser will have a tough time making it to the championship game in Atlanta.
What do you think is the biggest don’t-miss game? Vote in the poll, sound off in the comments, or do both.

Florida. There is no more frustration in the Bulldawg nation than continually losing to the Gators. If Muschamp walks into Florida and pulls off a win I just don’t see how Richt can recover.

Speaking of polls, a current ESPN poll inquires as to who is most likely to win the ACC this year. GA Tech is not one of the five teams listed. Needless to say, I don’t think Tech is the biggest “don’t miss” game.

Boise? Not in SEC, meaningless game. Boise 48, Georgia 21.
Florida? Richt’s 2-8, usually a blow out loss. I got Florida 48, Georgia 21.
South Carolina has the best Big 3 offesive skill players in the league in Garcia, Jeffries and Latitmore. South Carolina 38, Georgia 10.
Tech with Johnson is always a close game. Georgia Tech 31, Georgia 28.

Ideally you want to beat Spurrier and the Gators. However, if we lose to South Carolina its “here we go again” mode for the rest of the year. The problem with beating Florida is that you are subject to an emotional let down the following week or two against Auburn. I’d rather beat South Carolina, Auburn, and Tech.

South Carolina is going to win the National Championship this year. Offense can score, they run the ball well, best QB in the conference, best receiver in the conference, best D-Line in the conference, best DB in the conference. Gonna blow out Georgia this year.
Tech game’s more on Richt’s ability. It will be the most entertaining and the closest game, and the most fun to watch. Johnson gets the win this time though, Georgia has no running game or receivers. Front 7 for Georgia on D, too inexperienced at their positions.

We have got to give McGarity at least three years to get things right in Athens. I have always said that someone in Athens has to be the disciplinary ion and even though Richt has gotten better he still is very slow in not only getting the player in the right frame of mind but the coaches too. CMR gets a C- or D+ as being a motivator. I think that McGarity has already made some big changes and he is backing off to make sure he doesn’t over due it , which is as bad as not doing enough.
The most important game will be the Boise State game because if we win it will probably keep CMR employed even though he loses to South Carolina but if we lose to Boise State then the tension and pressure will be unreal for CMR to beat South Carolina. If we lose both of the first two games I think that McGarity will make Grantham interim head coach until a replacement can be found. Chris Petersen will be the leading candidate but it will take 5 million a year to get him away from Boise State.

Dont forget this isnt the 1st time BSU has came to the South to play Georgia with alot of expectations to win the game. The last time they got smacked in the mouth and the QB quit on the team. Georgia has enough athletes on both sides of the ball to play with BSU. Georgia has got to handle conference business big time. That is what will determine CMR fate, not BSU.

Garcia isn’t gone. Stories coming out lately say that he was kicked out of the leadership meaning because the speaker started asking questions like “who would you rather have leading your team, Tim Tebow or Steven Garcia?” and when Garcia defended himself against constant berating, that was NOT supposed to be part of the event, he was kicked out. He had two beers prior at a teammates birthday (both Garcia and the Teammate were of legal drinking age) and alcohol was NOT part of the issue.
Garcia has made a LOT of mistakes, but you know something is up when the OBC takes Garcia’s side and said he wants him back. He was basically railroaded because the AD’s wife, who organized the event in question, hates him.
But no, Tony, he’s not the best QB in the SEC. Murray is. Garcia could be, if he wants to be.

Let’s dust off some “good ol’ reliables” aka “excuses” for use this season. How about:
1) The refs are against us
2) The other team plays dirty
3) We had all our first team out sick/injured/whatever
4) We had to ride the bus after riding the plane
5) ESPN is against us
6) Every team brings their A-game when they play us
7) We played all walk-ons and still only lost by 4 touchdowns
8 ) The other team’s coach is a jerk. Ours is the only stand-up coach in the country.
9) If our players didn’t spend 60 hours a week studying and getting 4.0 GPAs we’d be better.

Lots of haters today. How interesting and pathetic. Good news for the haters though is there can not be any excuses this year including injuries. UGA does have the talent to compete with everyone, especially with 2 true NTs, a more athletic line backer group, and year 2 in Granthams scheme. Every game on the schedule is winable, we have a 5 star running back coming in along with Ken Malcome. And we have lots and lots of speed coming in with the Freshman class. Hopefully Coach Friend can coach all the touted offensive lineman better than Searels did so we do have a better running game and give Crowell some room to show why he is so highly touted. Its only May, can’t wait til Sep. Go DAWGS!!

FJR just took the cake for blind homerism. People think GEORGIA fans are bad? WOW! First so what if it was only 2 Beers before attending a LEADERSHIP Conference. When you are Garcia and have had multiple incidents involving Alcohol you should know better. I would have berated his ass too if he showed up smelling of booze. He deserved it. He may get another shot but it is simply because OBC in his late 60’s is desperate to validate not SC but his personal legacy after walking away from UF and getting embarrassed in the NFL. Lets not kid ourselves here.

The Boise State game is the first and the biggest. An 8pm kickoff will bring the loudest crowd the GA Dome has ever seen. Will they sell beer like they do for the Chick Fillet bowl? I hope not. I saw some crazy things when booze was sold in our last game their agaisnt Va Tech. A guy in front of use passed out, turned purple(we thougt he was dead) and had to be taken away on stretcher. I saw a guy get punched in the face so hard I think it broke his facial bones. I saw a VA Tech fan try to steal a little boys bulldog flag, the daddy had to fight him to get it back. There is a very good reason that we do not sell booze at SEC game.

Boise State is a huge game. If Georgia loses, there will be more “noise in the system” than we have seen since the last days of Goff. Fair or unfair, right or wrong… if UGA was to lose that game, there will be enormous pressure on the staff, players, and admin. Lose that game and SC becomes Richt’s last stand. The pressure would then double with a loss to South Carolina and I personally believe it is likely the team would impload. Again, not saying that is fair or unfair… just what I believe would happen.
However, on the positive side… if UGA wins the first game against Boise it changes things tremendously. The following week a SC win would sprinboard the Dawgs into the top 15 and maybe just out of the top 10 and would give everyone involved with UGA football confidence and excitement towards the SEC East race. Losing the SC game after a Boise St. win, would be tough, but the team can bounce back from it and the pressure on Richt wouldn’t be something that can’t be overcome.

USC has no QB. will they be better than last year? the same? if they are just the same, then Dawgs get that win. UF those stinking Gaytors…That the biggest game!! As a dawg fan seeing Urban Cryer calling those time outs to drag the game, the heart break of last year, and know that if the dawgs could have beat UF every year we lost, the dawgs would have 2 BCS titles on the shelf. The Boise Sta game is big to see if the defense has improved? Look, BSU is going to rack some yards up on us, probably score over 28. Thats the reality of there offense. Couple that with a possible Heisman trophy candidate at QB? To think UGA will shut them down is naive. UGA simply has to contain the offense, and find that running game to control the clock.
The next week against South Carolina is where we will find out how much truly the defense has improved. I think Lattimore is still eating up yards and T.O.P against us. Fans cannot point to the Boise game as a measuring stick for the defense. Again it will be possibly the best offense they will see all season and perhaps one of the best in the Nation.

My vote goes for the Boise state game, simply because it is the opening game of the season and will set the tone for the rest of the season. Somewhat surprised by the poll results. I figured it would be a landslide for USC or UF since they are such important games in the East. I guess the fact that BSU is the first game overrode that for lots of the UGA faithful. Interesting.

As an Auburn fan I’m looking forward to going back to Athens. Auburn usually wins there and it’s a nice trip from East Alabama.
Hope it’s a day game, the Autumn foliage is really beautiful driving back after another “W” over the Dawgs between the hedges. The late afternoon sun and the win do something for the North Georgia trees.

Must see? That would be the Tech game as that’s the only one you will be able to get tickets to.
Must win? Boise, because it sets the tone and would be a huge confidence builder. CMR you gotta do something different than past years to get this team ready to play.
South Carolina, because it’s the first SEC game and will set the pecking order in the East. Plus it’s Darth Visor and what’s more satisfying than shutting him up.
Florida, no reason needed.
Awbun, just because they need a good beatdown to put them back in their place and get the world back in it’s proper orbit.

We Dogs, all know that “under CMR, UGA is lousy”, or “they suck” or “they are simply no good” and etc. Right?? Is that not what the Techers scream in the same breath that they declare CPJ a savior??? Hmmmmm??
Under CMR …………………GT has won one game. Yes, the 09 game for GT was a giant FLOP, because all of my GT friends thought that it was in the bag.
Techers ……………always remember, Grant Field is UGA’s SECOND most favorite stadium to play in.
Besides, UGA over history is only behind ALabama, the real USC and PN State in the number of BOWL WINS. This stat says it all. ALL TIME Bowl wins means that the school is invited to a …………….bowl game.
Over the last 12 or 14 years ……………. UGA is one of the top winning programs.

For Richt, the two biggest games of the year are Boise State and Carolina. Lose those two back to back, and I think McGarity will be forced to can him at that time, even if he does not want to. Have a nationally televised meltdown against Boise State a la Alabama and Richt may be gone immediately…if not sooner.

Like usual, all I read on these blogs is so-called UGA fans wanting Coach Richt fired. Most of you don’t know 1 thing about the program. Most of you never attend a UGA football game. You read something negative in a newspaper and think its true. I guess you think read some junk in the same paper & think we have a great commandor-in-chief running our great country. Like I have said many, many times you look at the 3-4 prior UGA football coaches & they can not come close to Coach Richt’s wins his 1st ten years. You call the players thugs, they are the same kids all the other schools are wanting. Because they come to UGA you think they are thugs. My can’t you be positive toward them, they are not perfect, just like I AM NOT PERFECT. But all of you must think you are perfect, have a perfect life, great role model’s to your community & family. I know I am not perfect but I am not a thug. If we had not had a couple of bad seasons & had great seasons instead, then the bunch of nice’uns on these blogs would be praising the coaches & players. That’s really sad, it shows most of you DO NOT have a clue. You think the glass is half empty instead of half full. Why can’t you support the staff, players & want to the team win some games.I wll tell all of you, all you want to to do is whine about Coach Richt, If you go to a UGA game, then you are the one my son & me see not making any noise at all. Get the team pumped up, make it be a tough place to play like it was when I was at school, class of 1981. The other teams do not fear playing BETWEEN THE HEDGES anymore, Most of the fans, students just stand around complaining about Coach Richt & don’t know the 1st thing about the program. I hate to say this but our so called fans are just wanting to complain about this & that about the football program. When you start knowing something about college football, then write some comments on the blogs. Otherwise keep reading all the crap in our newspapers & think its all true. I hope the negative fans have a GREAT DAY!!!

Any team UGA plays that has a winning record this year will be a don’t miss game. Don’t miss that is another UGA loss. It is funny how all UGA fans are so confident about the Fl. game. All i hear is how Fl. is rebuilding. What about UGA? Seems to me that a team that wins 6 games, and didn’t beat a team with a winning record would be rebuilding also. UGA has no r.b, no go to wide receiver, no dominant offensive lineman, no proven play maker in the front 7 on defense, and no play maker at safety, yet UGA fans are confident UGA will beat Fl. UGA has gone to jax. with RIcht as head coach with a more talented team several times only to get their asses handed to them. Will believe this team will win a game against Boise, S.C, Fl, Miss St, and Auburn when i see it. Sorry, but Richt’s kool-aid tastes mighty bitter to me.

How can UGA fans continue to say that Murray will be the best Q.B. in the SEC next year, especially that he is better than Garcia. Last time i checked Garcia beat Florida, UGA, and Bama last year, and he has beaten alot of teams with winning records the past 3 years. Murray hasn’t beaten any team that was any good, and he has stunk the place up when the game is on the line in big games last year. Yet to hear UGA fans tell it, the guy is like Tom Brady in the 4th qtr. of big games. Just because the guy beats Vandy, Tenn, and Kentucky in succession and throws for alot of yards against these teams, doesn’t make him a winner or the best q.b. in the SEC. Until he beats someone that matters, he will be no more than a guy that puts up big numbers against inferior competition. Same can be said for the entire UGA program right now, and that goes for Richt also. At least UGA fans can’t say he is the best coach in the SEC. Hell, right now there are about 6 that are better and counting.

Ga vs Boise St= Great matchup and the win will put Ga in the top12-14 and the dawgs will be playing for respect and conference pride.
Ga vs SC= Biggest home game of the year. It’s the most important game of the season as far as winning the East is concerned and a win in this one puts Ga in the top 7-11 in the nation.
Ga vs Fla. This series has never made sinse and this will be the year that Ga turns the tables in the rilvery, win this one and Ga’s in the top 5 in the nation.
Ga vs Aub= UGA ranked in the top 5 and Auburn ranked between 26-45 but this will be by far the biggest game against a non contender of the year and that’s including GT because these tigers need to get some payback for multiple cheap shots and a game plan to take out the Ga qb Murray, as a way to help out their last in the SEC secondary.
The SEC’s oldest rilvery took at turn from one of two teams that had respect for each other and one that was played very clean for the most part to one where Auburn and Chizik showed just how low class they truly are. I don’t think the Ga fans will show the Auburn people the usual respect because of their teams classless play and if the Auburn fans thought the Blackout game was loud, y’all aint seen nothing yet.

2-9 vs. ranked teams since 2009
Look for Richt to go 0-6 against winning teams SC, Boise, MSU, Florida,Tenn, MSU, Auburn.
Look for Richt to go 5-1 against the losing teams, Losses to G Tech & Kentucky.

Celebrate *after* every win; however, this Boise State team doesn’t have many of the horses they’ve had for the past 2 years. On the other hand (not looking ahead, can’t do that), South Carolina has much of the same cast as last year.
On offense for SC, new starters at a WR spot, LG and FB. The RG and TE started 1 and 2 games last year, respectively.
On defense, new starters at one DT spot, one LB spot and FS.

I agree with DIL, Boise may be the most important game of the season. Georgia has no more room for losses to the Colorado’s, Central Fls, etc. of the football world. It is a game that will have HUGE national hype. Georgia desperately needs that game to set the right tone going forward. How a loss to SC might play can’t be determined until deeper into conference play – they may be the best team in the SEC. But Georgia simply cannot lose to Boise, and if they lose to Boise and SC I’m afraid it’s the end of Richt.

What’s the BIGGEST don’t miss game for 2011?
A loaded and trick question – as the situation your are in is fluid.
However, as all teams are 0-0 – and UGA’s staff seat is on the warm side:
Game #1 – Boise St – set’s the tone – need to win this game.
UGA wins – builds momentum to SC
UGA loses – huge pressure to compete against SC.
Next Biggest Game?
South Carolina – win this game – and UGA start’s our with a leg up to win the SEC East.
However, Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Vandy, Kentucky and AUBURN – are all HUGE.
There are NO guarantees we will beat any of these teams – no matter if they are rebuilding or reloading.
Florida’s overall talent is better than UGA’s – they need some organization and a QB. If their offense adapts to Coach Weiss – they will beat UGA…….again.
Like I stated – the BIGGEST don’t miss game is whatever the next game is on the schedule for UGA.
If UGA starts out in a huge hole – and is out of the running for a title by 7th game of the season – the only relevency left is who is employed by seasons end.

Defense is stout and now they add Clowney who is a freak of nature. Just don’t see how we stop Lattimore and Jeffrey. And if any of us Dawgs think that Garcia won’t start our game, well you are dead wrong. Yikes, Spurrier again riddles UGA football and from all places-USCe. Who woulda thunk?

I dont have great respect for Boise State because of the weak schedule they play but the GA/BS game will be the most critical because it will establish the kind of team GA will be this fall. They have to come out of the blocks firing on all cylinders for this one. A loss to BS and Richt is TOAST. I like him very much but he has made major coaching mistakes in the past two years in the area of assistant coaches. Still not sold on BoBo. He is not a bad offensive coordinator, although there were some incredibly bone headed calls last fall in critical games. There are more talented offensive minds out there.

Lex you are a tool for coming on a blog and dissing anyone who wore the G. Why don’t you save your tedious childish crap for someone who cares, ie no one. You are pathetic. Anyone who slams former players, any player, no matter how their career played out is a piece of crap in my book, you should be banned.

BamaFan2,
Thank you and you betcha the Navy Seals deserve all the kudos coming their way. A great bunch of warriors. These young folks in the military today are the true big stories of America. We all like to blog about the football teams, and recruits but never forget those kids in uniform. They go through hell so we can blog like hell on here.
My time was a ways back with Viet Nam. Old story not worth remembering anymore.

Mashed Potato,
Out in the middle of nowhere means they can devote more time to football and less time to getting into mischief. LOL. I don’t think our DAWGS are taking them lightly by any means.

DawginMetts: Character does count. Mettenberger brought his into serious question. He’s young and can redeem himself, but he got what he deserved and forfeited his opportunity of the privilege of playing football for the University of Georgia.

in my book, Mett was never a Dawg. He didn’t get injured and forfeit his career. He got into trouble and got booted. Glad LSU took him. I believe in 2nd chances.
My point was that the same idiot who posts all his stupid crap is dead wrong about Mett. He claims he will be starting for LSU this year while the actual depth chart shows him 3rd string.
Your handle on the blog is a new one. You are probably the same TROLL I am talking about.

Georgia loses 3 games at least this year. Boise, Florida and either S. Carolina or Auburn. Possibly both.

Not sure there is any way to please a lot of you folks on here when it comes to UGA. You complain and make jokes about UGA being a bunch of thugs and CMR being too soft and then you complain when People get kicked off the team by the coach for having bad behavior. Which is it? Do you want the coach to be a bad dude or do you want him to try and rehab some of these folks that get into trouble. Can’t have it both ways. Can’t be a mixture of the two either. Personally, I think he sees a lot in these kids that maybe we do not get to see. All we know is what they do or don’t do on the football field. I think he is a coach that has a personal interest in these kids and wants to see them succeed. How many chances are too many is only important if you work closely with these kids and not just read about them and comment, without full knowledge about what they have had for a life. Sadly, for a lot of these kids, their environment has been less than ideal, and they look at sports as a way to change their life and surroundings. At the same time, they are ill prepared for the pressures or academics that confront them in college. CMR tries to get them through it all and help prepare them for life. As for folks saying that UGA recruits all these kids and nobody else does. Got a buck for everybody who is a fan for another team, saying that in most cases, except for Tech., that their school didn’t try to recruit them as well.

Boise State. Most years it would be the first SEC contest. However, the last three years have seen the Dogs on a downward spiral…8-5, 8-5, 6-7. Georgia can reemerge as a topic in the national front with a win over Boise. Lose that game and it does not hurt you in the SEC, but the perception will be that Georgia is still on a down slide. Richt knows what’s at stake. The first one is the big one. All the hype leading up to the season and the Kickoff Classic will be huge for this program.

With few exceptions, Auburn and South Carolina are the closest and most exciting games that UGA plays year after year. The 25 year case of snakebite that UGA has with UF(the worst of any rivalry with roughly equal teams in the country) makes the game a “don’t bother to see” because you already know the outcome. UGA wins roughly every 8 or 9 years so just how excited can you get?

While reading blogs after the Auburn game last year…I have never heard so many cry baby’s in my entire life posting comments.
I would like to even cheer for Georgia but after reading what I read makes it hard! I do like Richt and wish that he can keep players out of trouble but losing the bowl game to Central Florida might do him in anyway by the end of this season. We will see.

LMFAO again at UGA fans. The cheap shot and ugliness was all started by chop blocks and cheap azz hits on Fairley BEFORE he took a little vengeance. While a big deal is made about the losses on our OL, We do have 2 starting tackles back…what do you have coming back in the OL and in your backfield? And you loss A,J. too. You clowns are the most overrated and undercoached team in the SEC and you will go down in flames in Athens. The only barking you will be doing is asking administration to put Richt out of his misery.

Dirty play by Georgia, attacking Fairley while he’s on the ground, then 30 players leaving the bench with NONE from Auburn leaving the bench. Which of course, WASN’T penalized by the officials as it should have been. Any Georgia fan or this writer thinking it was JUST AUBURN doing anything is a moron.

Tejas Jack,
Think you are using a little made up history on this blog. Folks that covered the NFL draft, other coaches in the SEC and just more than UGA fans were concerned about his late hits and cheap shots on the field. If not, we would not have seen him trying to explain the way he plays by saying he had some type of learning disorder, bi polar or such. He will have to tone it down if he wants to survive the NFL,if they play a game again, because the big ole boys there will not ignore or put up with cheap shots on their team mates. Let him hit someone, say, like Ryan of the falcons and see if the O linemen stand by and let him do it. He is going to the big boy league now.

It’s the Boise game by far. Should BSU win, UGA will be the shame of the SEC and finally (unlikely however) shut the mouths of SEC fans everywhere for turning their noses to the air when a non-AQ team comes around. We will likely hear about what happened all those years back and then all I will have to show is…a picure of Aaron Murray with his itty bitty “man” purse he seems to be proud of. Google it.
