Should Georgia skip signing a quarterback in 2012?

An interesting question has been raised by Gentry Estes over at Dawgs 247, which has reported that Georgia does not plan on signing a quarterback in its 2012 recruiting class.

If that’s the case, it would be a little unusual, as most schools feel it’s prudent to sign a quarterback every year. After all, more than one QB can get hurt in one season (just ask Ray Goff).

Estes, who thinks the decision not to sign a QB in 2012 makes sense, points out Georgia has a talented young quarterbacking corps led by redshirt-sophomore Aaron Murray backed by true soph Hutson Mason and true freshman Christian LeMay, that there will be plenty of QBs to choose from in the 2013 class, and that space is limited in UGA’s 2012 class.

And, of course, there’s also incoming signee Nick Marshall, who was a quarterback in high school, though he plans to play defense at UGA. An emergency spare, you might say.

So Georgia looks stocked for the next three or four years, especially when you consider that one of the backups is likely to redshirt unless needed this season.

But that in itself could be a sensitive issue. When asked by Bulldogs Blog recently about whether he might redshirt, Mason called it a “sticky situation” and said, “I’ll evaluate myself and my situation when it comes to that time. … I haven’t thought about it much because I don’t want to make an impulsive decision right here and say I wish I did [redshirt]. It would probably be something I would have to sit down and think about what’s best for my future. I don’t want to say yea or nay right now.”

And there’s always the chance one of the backups could get antsy waiting behind Murray and decide to transfer. There’s already been some speculation that, with LeMay considered the heir apparent, Mason might eventually consider transferring. Go a year without signing one, then lose a QB to transfer and the Dogs suddenly could be thin at the position again.

What do you think? Should Georgia skip signing a quarterback in next year’s class, or is it always a good idea to add one more?

I think it makes sense, this year, to not sign one. We have bigger issues at the moment.

Always sign a QB if one wants to come here. Period. As long as he’s a 4 star or a solid 3 star, or even a JUCO who is only good enough to be a dependable backup. Always sign one.

You might not sign a true QB but you better be signing athletes who have either played QB or could play. Injuries and transfers happen. They must really be sold on Lemay.

Simple deal is play all 3. Let them get on the field in some capacity at QB with significant reps. Let the best one become the #1 QB until he messes up, then go with the #2. Only way to get in trouble is if Richt keeps doing what he’s done last 2 years, all reps to No. 1 QB.

If a QB transfers, then you have to sign another QB. I’d grab one from JUCO that’s at least battle tested.

Probably just a ploy to try and keep Mason & Lemay from transferring. Richt loves Murray, no one else will start for 3 more years, but Richt has to keep a back up there, in case of injury. Barring injury, no one but Murray will start for georgia for 3 years.

Christian LeMay should be asking to redshirt this year. Then he’d at least get two years to start after Murray leaves (assuming Murray stays his senior year, which my gut tells me he will). If he plays this year and doesn’t redshirt next year, he’s stuck with one year max. Of course, I’m assuming that LeMay won’t beat out Murray before Murray graduates, but that’s a pretty safe assumption given Murray’s RFr performance and Mark Richt’s relative affinity for experience at QB.

Hutson Mason will be gone if he doesn’t get a lot of playing time this year. Why would he need to stay if he really thinks he can be a starting QB?

I think the focus needs to be on recruiting Defense, Offensive Line and RB’s. I’m OK with not recruiting a QB this year as long as they grab at least 2 in 2013. Bigger issues other than QB for the DAWGS for the immediate future with the O Line and RB’s being the biggest. Just my 2 cents…..

Mason will transfer soon if he doesn’t think he’ll get significant playing time this year. And you can’t blame him he holds all the records in the state for passing. Threw 5 td’s over Spring, Murray threw 4.

They’ve offered Gunner Kiel. They may not have a chance at him, but if you can get him GET him (top ranked QB, best QB name ever!). They’re next QB offer is way down the charts. Don’t think a mid-tier QB helps much.

Bill, really? In my opinion there is much to write about in this space and this is what we get? I can go along with the hypotheticals but this is really, really hypothetical and irreverent. No, they should not recruit a QB next year unless one just steps up and over whelms them.

Yes. It makes perfect sense to skip recruting a QB for the 2012 class. Lambert (Jesup, GA) would be the only QB that UGA should target, however he is not going to come to UGA and sit for three years to play. Lambert will go to UF or FSU and get some playing time within his first two years. I feel UGA needs to focus on a key receiver for the rebuild. If you read the tea leaves at UGA, Marlon Brown will be the man this year. However, we will lose T-King this year to graduation. Thus, UGA needs a sure-handed go-to receiver in the 2012 class to step-in and play. I do not feel that Jason Croom will be playmaker at UGA. UGA needs to find a way to get Dorial Green-Beckham or Jaquay Williams to commit (really big guys with some amazing ball hawking skills). Focus on a big-time receiver!!!

I’m not sure Lemay will be willing to red shirt, he was the #1 ranked high school player in 2010. Spring Lemay was 5 for 8, 2 td’s, 0 int’s. Those are not numbers that warrant getting benched or red shirted. I doubt Lemay would ever agree to sit on the bench, when he could get 12 games of experience in JUCO, demonstrate his leadership and pose, and like Cam Newton, grab a #1 starting position at any school after that. Playing right away is better than waiting 3 years behind Murray.

Likely Richt will try and drag out the decision to inform Lemay that he’s going to be red shirted until right before the season starts, trying to prevent a transfer.

Same with Mason. Richt won’t likely name Murray as the starter until the week before game 1, for fear of losing Mason via transfer.

Barring injury they’ll redshirt LeMay this year. Mason’s looked pretty good in the spring game although he did make some bad decisions. I like the way he stood in the pocket and went through his reads, but as long as AM stays healthy it won’t be much of an issue. Neither LeMay nor Mason is anywhere close to Murray yet.

Greg

For the Murray/Mason/Lemay trio to stay in tact, Richt will have to convince Lemay he’s not as good as Murray this year and needs to red shirt. That won’t go over well. Or Richt can’t try it with Mason, Mason won’t like hearing that either. Richt will also have to convince Mason or Lemay, that they’ll get significant reps, when he has not done that in 2 years with his QB, so don’t know if they’ll fall forthat or not.

Both Mason & Lemay think they can outgun Murray, who, let’s face it, Murray played good against teams with losing records (19 td’s), and played poorly against teams with winning records (5 td’s). 6-1 against teams with losing records (lost to Colorado), 0-6 against teams with losing records.

I agree.

I think Mason or Lemay transfers, maybe both, it’s a delicate situation when you recruit too many top players at one position, and you have a policy/history of generally only giving one Quarterback significant touches.

If this was Urban Meyer, the line would be more plausible, but Richt, Richt has no cred when it comes to playing two quarterbacks equally. He’s never done it. Richt even has a histroy of saying with a QB, regardless of how poorly the QB plays (Cox???)

I agree that Lemay is a very talented QB and that mason could start for several SEC schools, but by no means is Mason or LeMay a threat to take Murray’s job except for injury and both of these kids know that. Richt will not be waiting around as if he has a starting QB decision to make. I believe that LeMay will and should agree to a redshirt and be able to start for two years once Murray has moved on to the NFL.

As for signing a big time 5* QB this year, I do not see it happening. These 5* players want to come in and play right away and there is not one out there that can come in and beat out Murray or LeMay. I believe that we can sign a kid the caliber of Lambert which is a high 4*, but he is a local kid that has some love for the instate school and that is why we even have a chance with him. I believe that the greater effort will be made in 2013, when there will be three or more highly ranked QB’s right in Georgia. The staff has really been following these kids and evaluating them for a while.

Valley Vince

Anyone who thinks the #1 recruit in the country (Lemay) is excited about sitting on the bench for a year, is out of touch. Lemay was #1 ranked by ESPN 2 years ago as Jr. A junior. Lemay will not redshirt, he’s not a bench sitter. Murray, it’s not like Murray’s a clutch qb or something, Murray’s never even beat a winning team.

Nick Marshall out of Wilcox County was highly regarded as a high school quarterback. He’d be in the mix if the unthinkable happens.

I believe both LeMay and Mason stay put regardless.

As agressively as Murray plays sometimes, it’s not at all inconceivable that the Number Two moves up to Number One on a moment’s notice.

Coach Richt has coached Heisman-winning quarterbacks, plural. Not too many places to which LeMay or Mason could transfer have coaches who can make a similiar boast.

Marshall would be an excellent emergency QB. Most fail to remember that Mason was not highly recruited by any big schools. UGA was his only big school choice. He is developing nicely though. LeMay needs to red-shirt. If he has a problem with that, we still have 2 guys (not including Marshall) that have a lot of eligibilty left.

Lemay might transfer, but if he does big mistake he’s not going anywhere in the SEC and starting this year, except maybe Vandy…If he doesn’t see he needs to study the play book, maybe he’s another guy big on talent and short on brains.
