Should Georgia skip signing a quarterback in 2012?

An interesting question has been raised by Gentry Estes over at Dawgs 247, which has reported that Georgia does not plan on signing a quarterback in its 2012 recruiting class.

If that’s the case, it would be a little unusual, as most schools feel it’s prudent to sign a quarterback every year. After all, more than one QB can get hurt in one season (just ask Ray Goff).

Estes, who thinks the decision not to sign a QB in 2012 makes sense, points out Georgia has a talented young quarterbacking corps led by redshirt-sophomore Aaron Murray backed by true soph Hutson Mason and true freshman Christian LeMay, that there will be plenty of QBs to choose from in the 2013 class, and that space is limited in UGA’s 2012 class.

And, of course, there’s also incoming signee Nick Marshall, who was a quarterback in high school, though he plans to play defense at UGA. An emergency spare, you might say.

So Georgia looks stocked for the next three or four years, especially when you consider that one of the backups is likely to redshirt unless needed this season.

But that in itself could be a sensitive issue. When asked by Bulldogs Blog recently about whether he might redshirt, Mason called it a “sticky situation” and said, “I’ll evaluate myself and my situation when it comes to that time. … I haven’t thought about it much because I don’t want to make an impulsive decision right here and say I wish I did [redshirt]. It would probably be something I would have to sit down and think about what’s best for my future. I don’t want to say yea or nay right now.”

And there’s always the chance one of the backups could get antsy waiting behind Murray and decide to transfer. There’s already been some speculation that, with LeMay considered the heir apparent, Mason might eventually consider transferring. Go a year without signing one, then lose a QB to transfer and the Dogs suddenly could be thin at the position again.

What do you think? Should Georgia skip signing a quarterback in next year’s class, or is it always a good idea to add one more?

Mason wouldn’t transfer, loves the DAWGS. LeMay knew what he was getting into..RS Lemay, then next year in spring let it be opne practice indentifing the Number 1 & 2. Let the chips fall where they may then. I know I’m crazy, but think Welch wouldn’t be terrible in a emergency. am I the only one that saw this kid has alot of heart? And some great ability?

Let’s recall that Mason was planning to walk on at Georgia late during his senior year in high school. Lassiter’s offense was the Hoover HS spread, nothing like what Georgia runs, and then he put up those incredible numbers in the playoffs. I think that he’s the obvious guy to play this year in case Murray gets injured, having a full year in the system. Pull the redshirt off the new guy if Murray’s going to be out for awhile.

I think we need to go look for some guys that can play safety and CB more than signing another QB to sit and watch for 3 years.
That safety spot is really bothering me. Ark game still gives me nightmares. Too many big plays.

Is this really a concern of the general public? Seems that the AJC could have filled up space with somthing more entertaning or important.

No, 3824. Logan was signed the next year after Stafford. Ever if so not, you really didnt tie that together with “see how that worked out” very well. Not even sure what the point was (aside from being inaccurate). If anything Gray is an example of why not to expend a spot for a QB who will never play.

Murray will be gone before his senior year. He’ll leave aftr his junior year at the latest. You had better plan accordingly.

No way we should pass up on a QB. LeMay has already shown he is disciplined challenged by getting kicked off High School for a sex offense; Who is the proven backup??? We need at least another quality QB. (Note: I did not even mention that current QB might not fit with a new coaches philosophy if Richt does not win at least 9 games this year.)

I don’t see any way we get thru Summer w/o losing a QB. Mason looks like the odd guy out. Lemay has a bigger upside, so Richt will make Lemay a bunch of promises like Richt did with Gray, whatever it takes to keep him, Richt will promise. Richt’s promise to Mason is ‘you’re an ankle sprain away from starting’. Mason will realize his only chance to start is head somewhere else and turn some heads. You can’t get better warming the bench. Mason’s smart enough to know that, I doubt he’s suckered like Gray was by Richt’s empty promises.

It definitely make sense not to sign one for a couple of reasons.

1. C.Lemay will likely redshirt so he’ll still be a freshman next season

2. With 3 quality QBs already on the roster, and a redshirted Lemay, we won’t get a stud to come and sign anyway, so why not use that ship on another need and then come back in 2013 when there will be more seperation and get a stud.

Even if we were to lose Mason as some suggest, we would still have Lemay and a very athletic Nick Marshall as back ups not to mention the walk-ons. So we could easily survive a Mason transfer next season and still wait until 2013. Not certain we’d lose Mason anyway as some think.

I hope Richt is able to juggle the curerent three QB’s, there is plenty of talent there. If Richt can’t keep them all on the team and happy, then, no, I wouldn’t invest a scholly in another QB. Go get another DLineman or O-Lineman.

Whether or not the Dawgs get get another QB next season, Richt/Bobo better play Mason and probably Lemay as often as possible, so he doesn’t get in the postion he got himself in last season with a QB who had never taken a snap in a (college) game.

You need continuity at QB in the SEC. 1st year QB’s get creamed. I’d hope Coach Richt goes back to rotating two or three solid QB’s with 2 different styles, say Aaron Murray or Lemay running and passing, and Mason throwing deep balls. Tough to prepare for 2 QB’s. Greene and Shock worked well together, and it gave continuity at QB when Greene left, won the SEC with Shock. Murray will get at least half the reps from his experience, and hopefully, the other QB (s) will get rotated in to keep the QB succession plan strong. Succession plans are key to any org.

If there is a talented QB then you should ALWAYS try to sign them. There could be a 2-3 yr run where there are slim #’s of quality QB’s coming out of HS, and that could put you either in really good position is you happen to sign one of the last good QB’s, or in dire straits if you miss out. Besides, what the heck is one scholarship???

depends. if lambert, zeke pike, or gunner kiel wants to come to athens, i think you sign him. short of that, though, i think you have to recruit your needs, and i don’t think QB is as pressing this year as some other positions (OL, for instance). it always makes me nervous not to take a QB because there is so much variability in the development, but i understand the decision and reserve the right to howl about it later.

Just a few facts for all of the idiots who waste cyberspace with their moronic ramblings: None of them are going anywhere. Period. Mason is a die-hard, life-long Bulldog fan who would never even consider going anywhere else. In fact, he was not a highly regarded recruit and his late scholarship offer was a surprise to many. He is, however, an extremely talented and capable backup and will be his entire career at UGA. Who knows, the ultimate fate of a championship season may rest on his shoulders. Likewise with Lemay. He is the heir apparent to Murray and everybody knows that. He came to UGA to obtain an NFL pedigree and that’s what he’ll get. He’ll get his chance to shine in the college game at some point before he leaves. Further, Richt doesn’t rotate or play multiple quarterbacks and never will. Shockley waited his turn. Cox waited his turn. Lemay will wait his turn, and the next guy will, too. NFL caliber quarterbacks come to UGA to be taught the game, not for three minutes of glory. Richt and Bobo have a hell of a lot of credibility in the QB department, if you haven’t noticed. Frankly, I will be surprised if Georgia doesn’t sign a four to five star QB every other year or so.

Now for the requisite MARK RICHT ISN’T GOING ANYWHERE AND WILL BE AT UGA FOR A VERY LONG TIME !!!! God Bless Georgia. God Bless Mark Richt. Go Dawgs !!!!

I think Coach Richt’s so afriad the back up QB might outplay Murray, that he keeps them off the field, to try and reduce controversy, and build Murray’s confidence. I’d say this has been a flaw. Start getting more than 1 QB reps, it’s good for competition, good for recruiting as guys see they’ll get 2 chances to play QB, it makes preparation harder for defenses, it makes in game adjustments more difficult, and it’s good for the future with continuity and succession plans. Why do you think Meyer went with 3 QB’s to beat Georgia last year coming off a 3 game losing streak?

Joe – There will ALWAYS be plenty of HS QB talent, what you speak of is more of an issue with NFL teams and talent at the QB spot, which is why there was such a heavy run on QBs this season as there appears to be only about 3 decent QBs next year and one of those depends on Matt Barkley coming out early.

At the college level, there are so many HS QBs out there, you don’t run the same risk.

Valley Vince/Greg/Jules etc… are all the same truly pathetic no life friendless loser who lives on AJC blogs and makes the same tired comments about the glorious Bulldogs. He masquerades very unconvincingly as a Dawgs fan but all his stupid laughable comments are obviously those of a hater.

Here are a few examples:

The player rated first on the depth chart is not as good as (fill in the blank) but CMR likes them so they will start.
Any player not first on the depth chart is going to tranfer soon.
CMR has lost more games the last 3 years than the season before.
Every highly rated recruit in the nation won’t consider UGA because (fill in the blank) is the starter and the recruit won’t get a chance.

I’m not sure what this truly pathetic nameless little troll hopes to do with his moronic posts other than to each day briefly delude himself into thinking he he in the slightest way matters. Perhaps he thinks Mason or LeMay will be reading AJC blogs see his comment and think “Wow this ass clown idiot who is obviously insanely jealous of all that is UGA makes a good point. I think I will transfer.”

Hey Greg etc… please come up with some new material or at least use a name that is not a generic male name. Granted that would require you to have at least a tiny bit of imagination which you don’t.

No worries

LeMay and Matson wont step on the field for 3yrs like Cox

This is good because they can sit and watch and hand off the ball to run the clock out

When its their turn they will fumble around for their last season and finally look good by the Tech game with 5+ losses, graduate and then we start another QB with no experience the next year

This is a successful way to run a football program and everyone should be happy

Now can someone get this staff another pay raise

Lemay came in with his eyes open. He knows the situation and looks forward to the competition. Only way he transfers is if he plays well enough to start over Murray and is denied by CMR due to some loyalty issue or something of the like.

Also keep in mind that Hudson did not have a ton of offers. He loves UGA and will stick around. I hope he gets his shot as I think he’s got the goods.

Don’t forget the injury wildcard. Murray takes some hits that for sure.

Pretty sure we’ll keep offering quarterbacks every year, because you just never know. Injury could happen. Guy might not perform well. You might see a transfer. You might have a guy do something illegal and needs to be kicked off the team. A whole lot could happen to switch things up. You can never have too many quarterbacks, heard Bill B say that the other day when they drafted a quarterback, so if it’s good enough for the Patriots, good enough for UGA.
