Should Georgia skip signing a quarterback in 2012?

An interesting question has been raised by Gentry Estes over at Dawgs 247, which has reported that Georgia does not plan on signing a quarterback in its 2012 recruiting class.

If that’s the case, it would be a little unusual, as most schools feel it’s prudent to sign a quarterback every year. After all, more than one QB can get hurt in one season (just ask Ray Goff).

Estes, who thinks the decision not to sign a QB in 2012 makes sense, points out Georgia has a talented young quarterbacking corps led by redshirt-sophomore Aaron Murray backed by true soph Hutson Mason and true freshman Christian LeMay, that there will be plenty of QBs to choose from in the 2013 class, and that space is limited in UGA’s 2012 class.

And, of course, there’s also incoming signee Nick Marshall, who was a quarterback in high school, though he plans to play defense at UGA. An emergency spare, you might say.

So Georgia looks stocked for the next three or four years, especially when you consider that one of the backups is likely to redshirt unless needed this season.

But that in itself could be a sensitive issue. When asked by Bulldogs Blog recently about whether he might redshirt, Mason called it a “sticky situation” and said, “I’ll evaluate myself and my situation when it comes to that time. … I haven’t thought about it much because I don’t want to make an impulsive decision right here and say I wish I did [redshirt]. It would probably be something I would have to sit down and think about what’s best for my future. I don’t want to say yea or nay right now.”

And there’s always the chance one of the backups could get antsy waiting behind Murray and decide to transfer. There’s already been some speculation that, with LeMay considered the heir apparent, Mason might eventually consider transferring. Go a year without signing one, then lose a QB to transfer and the Dogs suddenly could be thin at the position again.

What do you think? Should Georgia skip signing a quarterback in next year’s class, or is it always a good idea to add one more?

Buckshot I agree LeMay didn’t even play last year a redshirt would give him a chance to learn the playbook and develop physically

Murray is the man until he has a stinker of a game. This can happened. He has played well, but has not had a great comeback moment or drive. David Greene’s drive against UT set the tone for 6 or 7 years after and Richt was able to manage Greene and Shockley. Murray has not had that kind of a moment for UGA yet. Certainly Shockley won a few ball games while Greene was the starter. Stafford won a huge road game against AU as a freshman and had a come from behind victory against VT in the Chick Fila bowl.

Mason looks like he has added some weight and strength. That is good. He looked to much like a true freshman last year. It would be great for Murray to play well all season, and leave only mop up duty for the backups. If Murray goes down, all bets are off and I think you see Richt using multiple QB’s. Competition breeds success, so let’s see how it goes.

Except that Richt and the Lemay family have already covered exactly what to expect, and nobody will be “named starter” in the week before the opener, since it’s not in question.

To pretend that any of “us” blogger’s can’t predict how the QB situation will play out is laughable at best. Murray is the man right now but that doesn’t mean he could lose that spot. Yeah Richt does like his favs and that may describe Murray (or not) but, a bad performance or two by Murray and the pressure is on Richt. Why redshirt either Mason or LeMay? If they are the studs they’re propped up to be they won’t spend longer than 4 years at UGA anyway

I think you should sign at least one QB every year. Why not? Injuries can always happen and besides a guy just may not work out like you think he will.

Given that Coach Richt was mostly a backup QB behind big-name Miami QBs, I’ve been surprised at how little playing time he gives our backup QBs. I believe this is one reason why Cox struggled at times in his one year as starter — he’d had almost no experience except for a brief moment early in his career. Logan Gray was only put in during mop-up time. A guy like Mason or Lemay might be more patient for their chance to start if they got a few meaningful drives during the season. (No, I don’t mean in every game – but, on a regular basis). For the past several years, we’ve left ourselves vulnerable to a QB injury — our backups remain inexperienced. Mop-up stuff like taking a knee doesn’t give these guys a chance to produce and gain confidence/poise….. DJ Shockley got to play some, even while backing up David Greene, so when he finally got a chance to be the starter as a senior, he had a great year……. just an example.

We should definitely recruit a solid 4-star/3-star QB if possible. Remember before last season when we were loaded at the QB position but then Mettenberger got kicked off the team and Gray switched to WR? It’s possible our depth could get wiped out so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Get Lemay ready now, backed up by Nick Marshall. Let Mason transfer and move Murray to wide out. You certainly won’t need another QB with LeMay and Marshall in the fold, so use the extra scholarship to sign OL stud BRANDON GREENE, if you can turn him.

It’s kind of sad to se me back on these blogs with classy Dawg fans. How long is it going to take me to realize that I am a loser? i am a car salesman at Carmax waiting on some guy named Sam to come back and buy a 16 year old Volvo from me so I can make a $50 commission. #1 Salesman? I’m #50.

I guess I should sit back and be grateful for my job that pays $12,000 per year and my cubicle right next to the men’s room. All the other salesmen laugh at me because they are better than me, i can’t compete with them and we all know it. I guess i’m lucky to be #50 even though there are only 50 of us.

It’s a different world now and I guess I just need to adjust my expectations and face reality.

Unfortunately, nothing will change for me. All I have going for me is posting my same old 5 paragraphs on the blogs. Calling UGA folks Dawgtards makes me forget my only encounter where I was naked with a girl other than my mom. She laughed out loud and ran away laughing.

I guess I need to get my head out of the sand and face reality. I’m an irrelevant car salesman who never could get into UGA. All those gorgeous blond coeds laugh at me when I walk by. When they come in to buy a car, they always tell the guy they are with to pick another salesman. That’s reality for me.

Murray’s too good to be beaten out by a freshman & redshirting Lemay will give him time to hit the play book & the weight room then try to win the job next yr with 4 yrs of eligibility left!! Tech signed a really good QB in Vad Lee & their returning guys are horrible but I bet he gets redshirted too….GO DAWGS

Just my humble opinion but the Dawgs should be concentrating on O-lineman this year as there are a lot of really good lineman available. As has been shown over and over the guys in the trenches normally determine the outcome of games. We as long as I can remember have been short on the offensive line due to injuries, dismissals, transfers, quiting etc. So we find ourselves short again in having the horses on the line to compete and win. As for QB we have 3 scholarship QB’s with Nick Marshall and some walk-ons. So we are not short at this position and we do only have 17 or 18 scholarships available for next years class. It is only wise and prudent to address your most critical needs which at the moment is o-linemen. Just my two cents

Gotta sign one. These guys, who were stars in high school, generally speaking, just don’t have the maturity to wait their turn. Most will transfer on you if they don’t see playing time coming their way relatively soon. There just aren’t that many D.J. Shockleys in the world.

If there was a QB that we really wanted to sign, I say do it no matter what the cycle. If the question is do we sign one for pure numbers…..not sure.
Yes injuries happen, but as pointed out we would have to have 3 QBs go down, none of whom is a bad option, before deciding if we just can’t live with Marshall for the few games left. Not sure the (yet to be named true freshman) would end up playing at that point anyway.
Go for the guys we want based on them, not based on what might(extremely unlikely) happen to (3) somebody else.

I-DOG

My opinion would be sign EITHER a QB OR a 2nd TE in this class if we can get one that is top notch. If a Grayson Lambert QB or a Ricky Parks TE wants to play at UGA, we need to try to make that happen assuming the coaches think they are as good as advertised. That is only IF the QB understands that the best player will play, but it is likely they will redshirt and then compete with Lemay and Mason in a couple of years for the job. Are they going to be OK with redshirting and riding the pine for a year after that before they get their real shot? It doesn’t do us any good to sign a QB and have them get frustrated and transfer in 2 years. We are pretty stacked at TE now too, so Parks would have to understand that he might beat out Orson Charles and Jay Rome as well as others, but that he is more likely to redshirt and be a backup for a year.

We appear to need to sign a lot of DE and OLB types and go lighter on the defensive backfield this year with us having fewer scholarships available for this class. Maybe only one D back?

If we don’t sign a QB, we should be fine with the 3 young one’s that we have now. Even if one is to transfer, I would be comfortable with having 2 good qb’S and a Nick Marshall type who plays another position, but could be the backup or even the starter in disaster strikes. If we did lose 2 QB’s to injury, a la the Hines Ward year… that is VERY RARE and we would just have to deal with trying to finish out the year with a guy playing out of position.

bulldogmaniac

May 5th, 2011

LeMay should red shirt.
It would be almost like Aaron Rogers sitting for a couple of years and learning the playbook inside and out and then when it was his turn….he shined.
LeMay should sit, learn and prepare for 2 years behind Murray and then come in and light it up for 2 years as the starter.

bulldogmaniac

May 5th, 2011

Also…….it will suck if Mason transfers.
The whole reason that we lost D. Rogers was because we told his best friend QB Nash Nance that we were not going to offer a QB last year and then we went and offered Mason. This pd the Nance’s off and went to Tennessee and said, “if you offer Nash you can get Rogers”.
My whole point is, we lost Rogers over signing Mason. If we were going to offer a QB that is never going to see the field we may as well have offered Nance ang kept Rogers.

Mason isn’t going to transfer, but if he did, it would be till 2012. We will have a starter with 2 years left (thanks to the wise use of RS), Lemay ready, (3 other back ups) and hot on the case (and if history is any indication, already with an early committment)of some top rated recruit at that point.

You don’t “lose” a year by RS Justin. In most cases a QB actually gains a year of playing time. At the very least, he is swapping one (his worst) year for another (his best) year.

No, Georgia’s new head coach should NOT skip signing a quarterback in 2012.

Looking at what will be surrounding them, a weak returning offensive line, no SEC-calibre wide outs, and a stable of suspended running backs, he should expect Georgia’s quarterbacks to drop like flies under SEC competition.

Bruning through the list of walk-ons will only further the embarrassment for Georgia, so he should sign at least two.

I appreciate Mason for giving us a serviceable backup last season, but he is no longer a necessity. Lemay will pick up enough of the offense by Fall to be just as effective as Mason was at the same time last year. But Lemay’s ceiling is MUCH higher than Masons. Mason will never be a starter for UGA, barring some horrifice injuries or unforeseen transfers.

If CMR believes in Lemay/Murray as much as we are lead to believe then no do not sign a QB. Speculating on who should RS? Lemay! Lemay’s biggest obstacle is learning the playbook and getting up to college level speed. Couple that with him not having live game exp for essentially 2 years come September? Lemay should look at that as a blessing in disquise. It is pretty damn obvious how it “should” play out.

After rescent years where our best early season option was Joe T. or Joe Cox, I’m not too sure I trust Richt’s judgement on how to handle your question Bill.

I’m Mark Richt and here’s the deal. Murray is my starter. Case closed. Get over it.
Mason will get plenty of mop-up playing time this season as I plan to be at least 21 points ahead of all the competition by the fourth quarter.
Lemay is gonna redshirt because I really don’t trust true freshmen quarterbacks (remember how Staff struggled?), and I’m gonna need him for a couple of years when Murray’s gone.
I also have a couple of decent walk-on QB’s who could play in an emergency.
Also I’ve got several offers out for some pretty good quarterbacks this year, so if one of them wants to come to UGA I’ll find a place for him. However, there are 3 or 4 pretty darn good Georgia High School QBs that I’m really interested in for 2013.

No “GOOD” QB will come to UGA with the current depth at the position. Look at how it plays out just between Murray and Lemay

2011- Murray RS Lemay Redshirt

2012- Murray RJ Lemay RS

2013- Murray RS Lemay RJ

2014- Lemay RS

So we are talking about a kid who is simply a depth filler and who will not have possibly a chance of seeing playing time till 2015! Ya think rival coaches won’t point that out to Mom and Dad? Skip this year let the depth age and then look into recruiting a top tier guy in 2012.
