Should Dogs be ranked as a Top 20 team?

We won’t know until August whether Mark Richt’s 2011 Dogs will crack the AP and coaches preseason rankings, but Georgia moved up in the post-spring practice edition of the Way-Too-Early Preseason Top 25 poll from ESPN’s Mark Schlabach.

Schlabach, who used to cover Georgia for the AJC and knows the SEC well, had seven conference teams ranked (more than any other conference), with Alabama at No. 2, LSU at 5, Arkansas at 11, UGA at 17, South Carolina at 19, Florida at 24 and Mississippi State at 25. South Carolina slipped from 15th place in Schlabach’s post-signing day ranking and Florida fell from 20th. Auburn had been ranked in the earlier listing but didn’t make the cut this time. Boise State, UGA’s opening opponent, ranked 7th.

Georgia’s placement was up one notch from 18th in the earlier ranking. Said Schlabach: “Bulldogs coach Mark Richt probably isn’t on the hot seat, but his program definitely needs to regain momentum in 2011. Georgia lost star receiver A.J. Green to the NFL draft, and then starting left tackle Trinton Sturdivant suffered a season-ending knee injury during spring practice. Quarterback Aaron Murray returns for his second season as a starter, but the Bulldogs left spring practice still searching for a No. 1 tailback. Incoming freshman Isaiah Crowell will have a chance to win the job during preseason camp. The Bulldogs should be better in Year 2 of defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s 3-4 scheme, especially if JUCO nose tackle Jonathan Jenkins is as a good as advertised. Tackle Kwame Geathers’ improvement during the spring was a big surprise. Georgia plays only four true road games (at Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech) and plays Boise State in Atlanta and Florida in Jacksonville.”

So what do you think? Does Schlabach have the Dogs too high? About right? There might even be a few folks who think they’re not ranked high enough (and if so please share the reasons for your unbounded optimism).

PAYOFF FOR COACHING OR RECRUITING?

A lot of eyebrows were raised when our Chip Towers reported that Georgia running backs coach Bryan McClendon had his salary more than doubled in the offseason, despite the Dogs ranking 10th in the conference in rushing in a losing season last year. But as Dawgs 247 pointed out, the raise for McClendon, which UGA says was a counter-offer to a bid for the coach from another school, came shortly after National Signing Day in February, and McClendon was the lead recruiter in Georgia signing Crowell.

Anyway, the news of the hefty raise certainly explains Richt’s heated response last week in Macon to a fan who harshly criticized McClendon.

“Bryan McClendon is a hell of a coach, he’s a hell of a recruiter,” Richt said.

Maybe the order of importance there should have been reversed.

So, as a position coach, McClendon is a good recruiter is the idea?
I still think Searels was the running game, not to say McClendon was good or bad, just: we really don’t know. We are certainly gonna see real soon.

But if you are going to retain the guy, you can’t have your position coaches/recruiting pointmen as the lowest paid in the conference. Does not motivate them or anyone else in the future to do a good job for us.

Was it in the neighborhood of $180,000?

17 is probably a little high after 6-7, losing to UCF, and losing Green and Houston and several OL. That said, we have the best QB in the SEC, which could take us a long way, and if Crowell is as good as his hype, we’ll be undefeated and win the national championship in a blowout.

Recruiting >>> Coaching when it comes to position coaches. As long as they can help with fundamentals and implementing the coordinators’ schemes, I’ll take recruiters any day.

UGA has become irrelevant in the SEC. All this ranking does is put more pressure on Richt’s already hot seat.

I would prefer we start the season unranked and make the players appreciate a ranking and that might take away some of “lack of effort” issues we have had recently.

I don’t think the AP or the coaches should release a poll until weeks 5 or 6 to see who is really ready to play football.

Reality is the team has lost more games than the season before, they are on a downward spiral. Reality is that there isn’t that much to be positive about. The D SHOULD be improved but we have no idea if they will be. Our TE is the only weapon in the passing game and we have no clear number 1 RB. It’s time to see some friggin’ results on the field.

Is Schlabach serious? UGA does not play the SEC teams “ranked” above them and lost to all three below them last year (and probably will again this year). So what has changed? Oh, that’s right. I agree with RomeDawgs about the polls not coming out until the 5th or 6th week. Preseason rankings mean absolutely nothing. The ranking system period is a little questionable until the end of the year. Hopefully the Dawgs come out swinging in the Dome and slap Boise around. I would like to the see the Dawgs have to earn their ranking though, instead of feeling entitled to it.

As for Coach McClendon, he always busted his tail when he was on the field. The hope is that he can instill that sort of mentality into these boys and Crowell coming in. I think the running game will be much improved this year over last.

dawgface, I prefer to look at the glass as half full. Last year was just that, last year. Only a fool would bet his money on this season’s games based on last years results. This is a new year. CFBFan

May 4th, 2011

Are you serious? Schlabach has lost his ever loving mind if he thinks the Dawgs should go top 20. IMO, UGA is unranked.

Recruiting classes should not dictate a ranking. They have yet to play a single down and most of it is media hype and opinions on how good they CAN be in college. Doesn’t always mean they will, see Wayshaun Ealy, Caleb King, etc.

Look at what UGA is now. With actual players with experience. Lost their top 2 most productive receivers last year in Green and Durham. Lost important OL pieces to the draft and Sturdivant to injruy…again.

Lost their most productive LB in Justin Houston. Lost productive Akeem Dent.

Now evaluate what the have now. A good QB? Yes, best in the SEC…debateable, doesn’t seem to be able to win the close one’s. Running game? Serviceable, will Crowell help, maybe, but we don’t know, he’s hype as of right now. OL, worse off with the key peices missing than last year and last year it wasn’t good. WR’s? Inexperienced. I do not see a single positive, other than Murray should be better, but who will he be able to rely WR wise, on UGA offense based on players played last year.

Defense? Secondary got picked on consistently last year. LB’s should be a little better than last year with experience as will the whole defense. There will be some drop of with Houston missing. Overall, defense should be better next year.

So, offense is sketchy and largely unknown as of now, plenty enough to preclude a top 25 ranking IMO. I know Dawg fans don’t want to hear that, but down to the nitty gritty it’s the truth. You absolutely cannot say that a teams ranking will drastically change from 6-7 and bowl loss to top 25 much less top 20 based on, from what I can tell, an unfounded dependence on the impact of a freshman recruiting class. UGA has been burned by top recruiting classes for some time now, I figured most sports writers would have figured that out. This college football fan has.

It seems like you can say this every year because of the constant shift in power in the SEC – this team can go 11-1 just as easy as it can go 5-7. I don’t think they will, but if Georgia takes Boise lightly in the opener, it would not be a good confidence booster going into a very tough South Carolina game the next week. However, it may be like 2005 when Boise came to Athens and a young Jared Zebransky struggled to put anything together. Make no mistake, Boise is going to be a home game for the Dawgs, but they would benefit from getting off to a fast start versus a developed Kellen Moore.

At Tennessee will be a tougher game than advertised, as will Vandy. In a learning year, Florida will struggle if John Brantley doesn’t retain any consistency. Don’t take Auburn lightly as it still has as solid of a running game as anyone in the SEC.

I think you can bank on at least one loss against USC or Mississippi State; otherwise this team should go without a loss elsewhere if they play to their full potential.

Potential. . . that seems to be the recurring theme

Auburn beat a very good Oregon team in its last game and the Dawgs lost to Central Florida community college in their last game. Therefore, Auburn should be in the top 10 and the Dawgs out of the top 25.

If the Dawgs beat Boise State, then bump them up to 17 or so.

I thought Bobo was the great recruiter who landed Crowell. Having skilled recruiters is important but they must be able to coach well and manage their players. The performance of the Dawg’s running game last year is proof McLendon may be lacking in coaching skills. He should have another chance to redeem himself, but he does not deserve a $110,000 raise. Who cares if you have great recruits if you cant coach them up to win?

I don’t see how anyone can rank us ahead of USCe who just won the SEC and lost virtually no one except Gurley. I honestly don’t see why USCe is not top10. Too high. Georgia may have the players. That hasn’t necessarily been their problem over the last 3 seasons. Georgia took a No. 1 ranking into a home tilt with Alabama and got physically whipped, I am ashamed to say.

After going 8 – 5, 8 – 5, 6 – 7, losing a huge offensive threat in Green, a lineman in Sturdivant, revamping the LB corp, having a suspect secondary, no leadership at running back, and a special teams unit, that besides Boykin, has been less than special, I don’t see giving this team a spot in the top 25 of all teams in the Country. Just because Trinton went down again does not constitute a “rebuilding of the OL”. There will be enough experience, and talent from first year redshirts for depth. I think the OL sees great improvement this season.

Todd Grantham’s 2011 D will not resemble the 2010 version, and I will be glad to take bets on that. Georgia’s D will return to the top three defenses in the SEC this year, taking a lot of pressure off of Murray. Murray was constantly being asked to return to the field after the D had given up one big play after another in 2010, and was being asked to try to regain some kind of momentum after the D had stunk it up. Defense creates momentum in college ball, and offenses feed off of this. Great defense will greatly spark a better running game, and yes I believe Richt will be more than willing to run the ball once he sees that they can do it.

I can remember all of the negativity on this blog before the 2005 season when Shockley was coming in as starting QB, and Shockley being hurt for the UF game was the only reason the Dawgs came up short in that one. Now I know that Willie’s defense sucked that year, but I am seeing similarities in the 2011 and 2005 teams, with this years team having a much stronger D.

The more the D.A. gator fans come on here running their mouths, the more enjoyable it will be when the Dawgs whip FORMER Georgia Bulldog, soon to be known as “Mediocre Muschamp”.

ARdawg – That’s possible; they are inexperienced at RB and WR. The DL appears to be their strongest area among returnees. The lost their biggest sack/TFL guy, but the others had pretty good stats in those areas. Kellen Moore lost his top WR and his RB/WR/Mr. everything to the NFL. You’d expect some graduation losses after a season where they returned 20 of their 22 starters.

Murray has a decent bunch of receivers to work with, and I expect Georgia will pass a lot in this game. King and Ealey remain mysteries to me. The LB positions and OL have to overcome significant losses. The Moore test in game 1 should provide clarity on the DB situation.

What matters is where UGA is at the END of the Season.

We are coming off a 6-7 year – and being humiliated by UCF – a team that showed some heart, effort and game day coaching vs UGA’s lack thereof (still get angry after driving 90 yards – 4th & inches inside the UCF 5 – and kick a field goal – Nice message – way to “finish the drill”!

If UGA wins – the polls will take care of themselves.

Focus needs to be on Boise and SC – not polls!

Red and Silver- the RB didn’t exactly block too well either. Won’t even mention the fumbles. Mclendon has done nothing other than getting Crowell to sign to deserve a doubling of pay. Crowell could be the next Jasper Sanks. If he turns out to be the next Rodney Hampton, Garrison Hearst then I’ll say he desrves it.

It seems like you have a particular rb you are talking about. Blocking and fumbles have alot to do with your desire and heart. The block in the Arkansas game had nothing to do with technique but, effort. The fumbles if you know anything about football comes with you putting forth the work ethic to correct the problem.

I was laughing at some of the comments posted on ESPN.com under Schalbach’s column today..calling him a UGA homer. There was definitely no love lost between him and Donnan at that time.

I believe the Dawgs, given all the factors, including decent schedule, should win at least 9 games which would put them about where Schalbach has them ranked.

May 4th, 2011
1:54 pm

Let’s see, a losing record, didn’t beat a team with a winning record last season, add to that the o.l. which was terrible lost it’s best 2 starters, the wide receivers which were a little above average with A.J., will be below average with both A.J & Durham gone, the Q.B. that disappeared in big games might be better, but without A.J. to bail him out, and with a terrible O.L. he might be better, and he might not. The D.L. seems to have improved, but Kwame was dominating UGA’s offensive line in spring, and every good defensive tackle did the same thing to them last year. The linebackers seem to be better, but if Robinson is the leader, then don’t see much improvement, this guy hasn’t made a big play since he has been at UGA. The secondary which was miserable last year will probably be worse, with the safety position being probably the worst in the SEC. Add that to the fact UGA’s coaching staff has been outcoached in every big game the past 3 years, and I don’t see where the improvements will come from. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, that is Richt and BoBo’s offensive play calling and offensive game plan. That is why this DAWG will not hunt as long as Richt is there. 6-7, and Richt and Bo bo will be working at the christian bookstore after next year.

Sure! We should always be in the top 25 preseason poll. Name ten more schools with more talent??? Coaching is our handicap. Next year we fail to play the top 3 teams from the SEC East, Florida and Tennessee are still down so where should we lose in those games??? South Carolina and Boise are the only two games we should consider a toss up and lose one of those (win the other) and drop two games due to coaching and we still finish 9-3. That easily equates into top 20! Top coach and for the second year in a row we should be challenging for National honors.

It’s a pre-season ranking, so both the folks that think we’re ranked too low and the ones that think we’re too high, GET A GRIP.

None of those 7 SEC teams will end the season ranked where they are. I respect the heck out of Nick Saban but no way Bama ends up being in the top five with a new Quarterback and all the personnel they lost to the NFL. And I’m sorry, as long as Les Miles continues to go with Jordan Jefferson over Mettenberger at Quarterback, LSU will lose a few as well.

Which goes back to why the #17 ranking isn’t crazy. You can’t evaluate based on the year before. We went 6-7 and it happened…in 2010. It’s 2011. Georgia now easily has the best Quarterback in the conference and anyone with a pair of eyes and half a brain had to see in our G-Day game that our defense will be vastly improved.

Georgia may not win a National Title, fine, but we will end the year better than the #17 ranking. It all doesn’t matter…it will only matter when they play the games. But Schlabach’s analysis is fair in evaluating our current talent for a new season.

McGarity has made it very clear serious improvement has to be made in 2011.
If Georgia can’t get it done in 2011 , 2012 and 2013 will need a complete overhaul with the schedule getting considerably harder.

UGA is definitely ranked too high in this pre-preseason ranking. They haven’t proven that they did anything, of significance, during the offseason but have a nationally ranked recruiting class. GT Fan: Auburn is not ranked because they lost over half of their starters, including a Heisman QB and a top D Tackle in Fairley. UGA does return several key starters, and will now have 2 nose tackles who each are 6′5″ and 350 lbs, and can play. Additionally, the word is out that UGA’s strength and conditioning program is renovated and cranked up. Their players are now bigger and stronger than before. They also have a favorable schedule. Being ranked near number 20 is not unreasonable.

Would love to know what team came after McClendon and Tony Ball. What a joke. UGA rewards mediocrity, Richt makes close to 3 million to finish in 4th in SEC East, and McClendon who coaches running backs gets a 110,000 raise when UGA ranks 11th in the SEC in rushing. Guess his backs really improved from the Liberty Bowl to spring practice. OOPS, forgot King averaged about 2 yards per carry in spring game. Even Richt the coach that knows what the helllll he is doing after winning 8, and 6 games the last 2 seasons, and after finishing with a .500 winning record in SEC the past 3 years, said the running game in the spring game wasn’t very good. Yet this clown gets a 110,000.00 reward. If some other school wants this clown please let them have him. And if any school wants the pathetic Richt, please let them have him. I bet there will be alot of teams knocking the doors down after Preacher boy Richt finishes in 4th in the SEC east again this year. UGA=Mediocrity, and it is a shame the President, the A.D., the fans, and the big contributors don’t demand more.

The Painful Truth

May 4th, 2011
8:09 pm

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida, Alabama, or other schools will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 50, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and total irrelevance.

Was not aware that sportwriters used the past record in head to head as a guage of how to rank teams in the spring. That woud substantially complicate the matter of ranking team in the preseason woudnt it? UGA can never be ranked ahead of FL before they even up the recent most 20 yr in the series? Not saying they should or shouldnt be, but that’s a pretty simplistic thing to say. I noticed you took no issue with having Auburn so low, despite them having a pretty big advantage in the series with Alabama in the past decade.

Preseason ranking have nothing to do with who “earns” something. This was not the “lets get the fans back feeling good about themselves again before we say anything” poll. It’s a poll about who is returning, and what strengths and weaknesses writers see after spring practice season.

Being mad about last year is completely different than actually disagreeing with the points that Schlabach made.

And you trolls calling him a Homer may as well just admit that you have no idea who this guy is. He is the anti-Homer when it comes to Georgia. Pre-season rankings are about as worthless as the paper that they are written on. UGA will be better this year for sure, but to rank them nbr. 17 in a meaningless poll, doesn’t do justice to the school or college football. Polls are meaningless until a few games have been played and then you have an idea where your team should be. I think UGA will earn the nbr 17 or higher after the first four games, and the proof will be on the field.

Because of the way we start the season this year, it really doesn’t matter if we have a preseason ranking or not.

Boise St is a definite top 8 opponent, while SC should wind up with a ranking somewhere in the top 12.

My point is regardless of how we start, by week 3 we should be ranked right where we deserve.

2-0 should vault us into the top 10, top 15 at least
1-1 with the one being the higher ranked of the two will probably have us somewhere between 19-25
0-2 Will keep us unranked as we would deserve to be.

That’s the risk vs reward of opening the season against ranked opponents back to back.

I’m hoping both Boise and SC make it into the top 10 respectfully.

I personally think there should be no polls until October 1st.

By then, you have played your opening out of conference games(some good, some blowouts) and you have opened your conference season. You are 4 or 5 games in and you can tell if a team deserves to be ranked.

Boise could be as good or better than last year.

The big question on the sports channels will be, “is this team better than last year?”

Quit taking comfort in thinking Boise will be worse, if they are worse than last year it will be by a marginal amount, marginal.

Returning 7 and O & D, with a lot of last years 2nd and 3rd stringers getting plenty of play time and competing for tops spots you’re gonna be facing a ruthless team competing against each other for the limelight. TRUST ME WHEN I TELL YOU THAT IS BAD NEWS FOR THE LIL DAWGS.

Boise has solid d-linemen returning but are lacking experience at receiver. They have a good running back and a solid QB who has run up stats against crappy competition. Georgia has dramatically improved its defense and is going to be fine on offense and has the best kicking game in America.

The game is going to be a war, not 42-10 either way.

Once again I see you passed on actually discussing what I said in favor of childish nose thumbing.

Here is the difference between you and me. I invite people to counter anything I say, in fact I hope for it because its fun to debate on a grown up level. You toss out something and get all offended when challenged on it or asked to back it up. That always seems very thin skined or a thin point in the first place. You are free to defend/clarify it.

Damn thing is, I was giving you an opportunity to correct your statement, which was actually worded opposite of your point.

The other thing was I was saying UGA should be ranked much higher based on the raw talent they have on paper, but folks ARE figuring in that the staff has struggled the past couple of years. (I disagree with you that they only have “just enough talent” to barely be ranked). Tell me where I am wrong.

Boise had to come back to beat VT in the 4th quarter. The 2 guys who were the difference makers have graduated. And VT lost to a 1-AA team the next week and got blown out in their bowl game. Boise lost to Nevada later in the year.

They make their living playing 1 or 2 decent teams a year.

They are 0-4 vs the SEC.

Yet you say 42-10 while NOBODY beat UGA last year by a score like that?

Is this a joke? UGA in the top 25? Predictions: Boise State 52, UGA 9; South Carolina 28, UGA 17. I really hope UGA is able to beat either South Carolina, Mississippi State or Auburn or ANYBODY with a winning record. Take out Costal Carolina, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Ole Miss, New Mexico State, GA Tech. Those are suppossed to be “automatics” (see 2010 UGA vs Colorado and UCF, however). Figure losses to Tennessee, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Auburn, Florida, Boise State. Top 25? Hardly

the PAINFUL Truth

It’s kind of sad to se me back on these blogs with classy Dawg fans. How long is it going to take me to realize that I am a loser? i am a car salesman at Carmax waiting on some guy named Sam to come back and buy a 16 year old Volvo from me so I can make a $50 commission. #1 Salesman? I’m #50.

I guess I should sit back and be grateful for my job that pays $12,000 per year and my cubicle right next to the men’s room. All the other salesmen laugh at me because they are better than me, i can’t compete with them and we all know it. I guess i’m lucky to be #50 even though there are only 50 of us.

It’s a different world now and I guess I just need to adjust my expectations and face reality.

Unfortunately, nothing will change for me. All I have going for me is posting my same old 5 paragraphs on the blogs. Calling UGA folks Dawgtards makes me forget my only encounter where I was naked with a girl other than my mom. She laughed out loud and ran away laughing.

I guess I need to get my head out of the sand and face reality. I’m an irrelevant car salesman who never could get into UGA. All those gorgeous blond coeds laugh at me when I walk by. When they come in to buy a car, they always tell the guy they are with to pick another salesman. That’s reality for me.

Ron Smith,

52-9

I’ll take that bet and own your farm.

Look at the scores from last year. No one beat UGA that bad and Boise sure isn’t going to.

AltamahaDawg,

I am so grateful The Great AltamahaDawg GAVE ME AN OPPPORTUNITY to respond.
Before giving someone “opportunities” or making comments / telling others to correct themselves learn to spell. (s-e-n-s-e).
Secondly, of your 6 entries under this column 5 have been to comment and “correct” others.
I rest my case.

This Ga team will be loaded from what I hear from my contacts in athens. Boise St? Get real—Ga will beat them like a rented mule in the Dome with 99.9% Ga fans, all liquored up from a full day of tailgating and partying around Atlanta. Ga beats USC in a close game and will likely lose only 1 or 2 games. Ga 10-2: you heard it here first!

Then others should not say things that are not true.

And half your comments have been pointless and childish barbs at me that avoided responding to what I actually said and certainly didn’t dispute any of it. Case, rested?

“…I agree with RomeDawgs (and JaxDawg) about the polls not coming out until the 5th or 6th week. Preseason rankings mean absolutely nothing. The ranking system period is a little questionable until the end of the year…”

Hate polls all together but particularly preseason polls. Nothing like letting the experts tell us who they “THINK” will be good. Wait until midway thru to have any poll whatsoever. Let the games themselves establish that. Oh wait, we dont do that at the end of the year either to determine champion, so why be inconsistent. And does anyone really care about bowl games? I define them as an additional, glorified, pride game that means absolutley nothing in the big picture. Pride and $$ is all. Bowls would mean so much more if we incorporated the major ones into the playoff. The semifinal sugar bowl, etc. But lets just continue to let the computers and “experts” decide that for us. Some will say that the regular season is the playoffs, but tell that to baseball, nfl, soccer, hockey and every other sport in the universe that have on the field playoffs to determine champion. Hey my falcons would have won the NFC!! WHOOOHOOOO!!! No need to play the packers right?? right? i say again…no need to play the packers RIGHT??? I love UGA football and college football but really do DESPISE the system, and admit i wathced 0 bowl games outside of the UGA liberty bowl last year. But trust me, didnt watch that one too long either! LOL BTW, I believe UGA will have a good year at 10-2 and win a B(C)S bowl game. GO DAWGS!
