Are there any ‘trap’ games lurking for Dawgs?

The Dogs' last visit to Knoxville didn't turn out so well. Could Tennessee be this year's trap game? (Associated Press)

The Dogs' last visit to Knoxville didn't turn out so well. Could Tennessee be this year's trap game? (Associated Press)

Looking ahead at the 2011 season, most college football observers agree Mark Richt’s Dogs have one of the most formidable challenges in opening with Boise State and South Carolina. But you also hear a lot that after those first two games Georgia’s schedule looks pretty manageable, barring some unforeseen development like last year’s loss of A.J. Green for four games.

The toughest games are easy to identify once you get past those first two. Mississippi State still isn’t one of the SEC’s glamour programs and the game is in Athens, but the other Bulldogs were too much for our Dogs last season and so everyone should be expecting another tough game this year. Florida in Jacksonville is big every year. And even a depleted defending national champion Auburn team will have the Dogs’ full attention when they come to Athens.

So what looks like a potential “trap” game, one of those weeks when you’re caught looking ahead or feeling complacent and stumble over a lesser team you are expected to beat?

ESPN.com’s Edward Aschoff, in his analysis of Georgia’s schedule, pegs the Oct. 15 game against Vanderbilt in Nashville as Georgia’s trap game. “The Commodores are under a new, more energetic regime and are still a bit of an unknown,” he writes. “Coming off tough games against Mississippi State and Tennessee could also leave the Bulldogs a bit weary.”

And, of course, Florida is the next week. Still, Vandy is Vandy and picking the ‘Dores as the trap game seems a bit of a stretch to me.

Looking at the schedule, the Sept. 24 visit to Ole Miss might worry a few folks, but not much is expected from the Rebel Black Bears or whatever they are now.

Awhile back, CollegeFootballNews.com predicted an 8-4 record for the Dogs, beginning with a 2-0 start but back-to-back losses to Mississippi State and Tennessee, and Tennessee might indeed prove to be a trap for Georgia. It comes the week after the Mississippi State game, and while Derek Dooley’s Vols are still rebuilding, a couple of the uglier Georgia performances in recent seasons have been in Knoxville.

I think Tennessee is the one that worries me most as a possible trap for the Dogs.

Do you see any other games on the 2011 schedule that could catch Georgia looking elsewhere?

I have said all along we can start 2-0 (which I think we will) and end up 3-2 after the first 5 games. Beat Boise and SC and get swept by the Miss schools.

If that happens, we won’t win in Knoxville either and we will limp into Jacksonville and the rest of the year trying to avoid another 6 loss season.

The blogs will be lit up with possible replacement candidates for Richt.

Weird thing about this year is that Richt is facing at least 2 coaches who could have his job next year-Peterson and Mullen. And Kirby is in the other division.

For all the Richt haters who want him gone, you can write this down:

The next coach won’t win anything for 2 years of any significance.
The next coach won’t have almost 100 wins in his 1st 10 years either.

Our best bet is that Richt gets this thing fixed and we win 9 or 10 games and build up for 2012.

Guys – WE are the trap game for other teams at this point. We cant beat Florida for anything in the world, we lost to teams from evry conference imaginable last year and our coach is as soft as Fulmers belly. All the teams with winning records are Richt’s trap games. Went 0-6 against those type of teams last season. Richt does well against bad teams, but Tenn could be a winning team in 2011, largely through running the ball on offense, and outscoring teams, as Tenn has a better QB and better WR’s than Georgia.

You don’t need your head coach AND offensive coordinator to be former QB(s). All Richt/Bobo want to do is “throw it around”, and “take shots down the field”. All those two do is support each other’s bizarre play calling. You need a powerful offensive line WITH DEPTH! Congradulations are in order for Hepzibah’s James Capenter, Bama’s left tackle and a 1st round pick! Atlanta westlake’s Chance warmack will be next. Thanks Richt, thanks Bobo. Roll tide.

Whoever predicted UGA would beat both BoiseSt.&S.Carolina, and turn around and lose back to back games against Miss.St&Tenn. is crazy. If this team can beat the preseason #5&#8 teams to open the season, they want lose to Miss.St&Tenn. That being said, this team might lose all 4 of those games. Until Richt, BoBo, and the midget q..b. prove they can beat a team with a winning record, all bets are off. It is pretty sad, when UGA fans have to worry about actually beating a team with a winning record. As bad as Goff, and Donnan were at times, they never had that label put on their teams. Richt&BoBo need to go, and for all the Kool-Aid drinkers, how does it feel to walk around pounding your chests about Richt’s wonderful accomplishments the past 3 seasons? See where his pathetic assistants even received raises for their wonderful coaching achievements last season. Only UGA would reward coaches that had a losing season, and couldn’t beat a team above .500. THat pretty much sums up the state of UGA’s program, and the willingness of it’s fans to accept mediocrity from it’s players and coaches. Nothing will change this fall, you can bank on that. Just because precherboy gets angry at a fan that has the balls to call Richt and his pathetic assistant coaches out, doesn’t mean a damn thing, and it certainly doesn’t warrant optimism from the kool-aid drinkers.

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same questions this time a year from now.

Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Spurrier and Miles represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.

Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.

DMR

6-7 programs don’t have “trap games.” Trap games are games that teams assume they will win with little or no trouble and find themselves on the ropes against the opponent. This Georgia program has not worked hard enough or been formidable enough in the recent past to have a trap game.

Every game should be viewed as the most important game of the season. A “one at a time” approach is the only thing that will work for this team.

The road ahead...

May 3rd, 2011
12:29 pm

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking three years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida or Alabama will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

Whether Tennessee is a “trap game” or not remains to be seen. I get so sick of all of the stupid negativity from so-called Dawgs fans on these blogs. Especially ignorant negativity. Mark Richt is 6-4 versus the Vols, including three consecutive wins in Knoxville. This is not to mention that Tennessee will finally probably succeed in reaching last place in the East this year. How UGA could be expected to beat Boise and South Carolina and then lose to the last place division team is a stretch for even a moron to make. We simply need to get our feet back under us and play Georgia Bulldog football and all will be well. By the way, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Mark Richt ain’t goin’ nowhere and anyone who thinks differently better be prepared to get out a recipe for crow. Coach Grohbo, Tennessee has had three, yes three, losing seasons in the last six years. Their recruiting has been way down for several years, the few decent players they had have left or are hurt, Tyler Bray (5-30 in the spring game) sucks, no depth, and they play one of the toughest schedules in the SEC. Tennessee and Georgia have always played each other tough (in the Richt era) despite a couple of lop-sided games, and Georgia’s slide of late is well documented, however, Tennessee didn’t look like they belonged on the same field with Georgia last year and, in my opinion won’t this year either. The separation between UGA and the Vols finally reared its head last year and will continue. Prime example: Tennessee didn’t have a player drafted into the NFL until the 4th round this year — a trend which will continue for at least a few more years. Georgia either had the most or tied for the most in the SEC. Does that answer your question?

You talk about either the most or next to the most players drafted in the NFL and yet you lost to every team last year on your schedule with a winning record. Bill, they are ALL trap games. Unfortunately for us we are the trap until we prove we can beat somebody. I never thought for an instant that I would have to actually stop and consider if we “could” beat Boise St. How far we have fallen. However, I think we come out 2-0 but at the same time some of those other teams will be rising up as well. We’ll have to fight every week sans the NM ST game.

After a 6/7 season, every game is a trap. UGA hasn’t proved it can outplay or overpower anyone. All games have to be played at a high aggression level. UGA hasn’t even been mentioned in the top teams and this is a joke and shows that we need to play with a chip on our shoulders every game and hit people in the mouth every play. UGA cannot afford for players to take plays off. We are now considered irrelevant and this is unacceptable. CMR says he knows what the hell he’s doing, all I can say is it better show early and often.

Bill King –

Could have sworn you wrote this same type of article, but while digging through your archives I did get a good laugh at some of your other headlines from last season:

“Richt sees possibility of ‘tremendous’ season” – if he thinks 6-7 is tremendous so be it.

“One forecast sees this as the year of the Dawg in SEC East” – it sure was, the worst year since Richt became coach.

“In what universe is Petrino a better coach than Richt?” – In this one Bill, 2010’s records proved that.

“Dogs only need to be a little better to top last year” – Too bad they played a little bit worse.

“Florida paper slams Dogs again: Most overrated ever” – Well at least sometimes newspapers do get it right.

“Georgia-Florida was basically even … except for the coaching” – That was probably the most accurate headline you have ever written.

“Bulldog Bites: Dogs winning SEC East in 2011” – Unbelievable. The season isn’t even over and you print part of an article about UGA’s team in 2011. No wonder the KoolAid drinkers keep coming back for another glass.

“Is it tough to get excited about a 6-6 Georgia team’s bowl trip?” – Evidently it was for the UGA football team.

Ok, I’ll shortly interrupt the guy who keeps typing, under various fake names, that every game is a trap game for Georgia.

Firstly, 4 games are not trap games:
Vanderbilt, Coastal Carolina, New Mexico St, or Ole Miss

Those are 4 terrible teams.

Second, Florida, South Carolina, Boise, Auburn, Miss St won’t be trap games, because all will be top 25 ranked teams and 4 beat Georgia last year.

That leaves Kentucky, Tenn, and Georgia Tech. The trap game will likely be one of these. Kentucky usually is the trap game, sometimes it’s Tenn, Johnson plays Richt tough, but since it’s an in-state rivalry, and last game, won’t be the trap game.

My bet is Kentucky or Tenn is a trap game, maybe both.

In order to have a “Trap” game, you first have to be better than your opponent. At this point, Georgia hasn’t proven that they are better than anyone in the SEC. They are all trap games, and Richt had better win at least 9 or he is toast!

Trap games? 6-7 teams who lost their only SEC calibre defensive and offense talent don’t have trap games.

This is getting silly, the article would be more accurate to go looking for games in which UGA can surprise a team on their schedule which may be looking ahead to a more important opponent that UGA.

Why do the UGA homers at the AJC do this every year to this delusional fanbase? Just so you can write the articles in mid-Sept about the fans cursing out their players and coaches?

Al @ 6:41 is spot on with his comments about the trap game situation. A lot on here see the dogs going 2-0 to start the year. I don’t know what you are seeing for that to happen as both are going to be nationally ranked and more than we will bargain for to start the year. If we go 1-1, I think we can consider that a good start. Not playing Bama, LSU,and Ark. helps the rest of the schedule set up, and we should be able to possibly go 9-3, barring another meltdown in Jax. Trap games, we should be considered someone elses, until we right the ship. Not trying to be negative, but who has really feared UGA the past three years? And to the earlier poster that said Murray was 6′1″, well unless he has a twin brother, he is no more than 5′10″. I looked him in the eye at the Peabody last Dec., and he did not tower over me, who stands 5′9″. Good luck to the Dogs in 2011, I think it make or break for CMR.

I really hope one day that CMR lets the players read some of these comments, like Erk did to motivate his players. Yes UGA has had a down few years. But to say they aren’t in the SEC east picture is crazy! It’s still UGA, CMR is still one of the best coaches in College. Records don’t lie.
I see the Tenn game being the trap game. They still have a ways to go, but I feel this year will be a great improvement from last year. The games we lost were so close, no one really blew us out. So I see 10 wins for the Dawgs. But that’s why we play the games….
I don’t care about black uniforms, dancing, or any other “tricks” to motivate the team. A loss against UF should see players running laps around athens til ruts are cut in the asphalt so deep you can put gators in it and call it a mote.
Players not the coaches gave up in that overtime. as long as one of those 10 wins is over UF. If they can’t get motivated for every game after last season, …every game is a trap.

Chris = A DAWGS FAN WITH A CLUE

No, unfortunately I am not some of these other guys posting how every game is a trap game. The point I was making is, “there is no such thing as a trap game when you were 6-7 the year before!”

If Mark Richt coaches the way he did last year, if Bobo coaches the way he did last year, and if Georgia comes out lathargic as they did in soooo many games last year, they could lose every SEC game they play.

Those of you who compare Richt to Bowden or Perterno are complete idiots! You are what is wrong wtih Georgia. You are blind homers that see a few years of success as the best thing that has ever happened at Georgia. Are you serious????

We have won two SEC championships with Mark Richt, and don’t give me all this crap about how we went 20 years without a championship before Richt. We have the money and the power to be the best, and Mark Richt is not it. We have had too many years when we have underperformed, and underachived with some of the best talent in the country. This all falls on coaching, and Mark Richt hasn’t had a clue for several years.

We BARELY beat Kentucky last year, and they beat us in 2009. Nothing has happened that would lead me to believe that the Kentucky game will somehow become easy this year. I might could give you Vanderbilt as a gimme, but considering how badly Georgia played last year, no SEC game will be a gimme.

You blind azz fans are the ones that should get off of this blog. I agree with many that Richt deserves one last chance. If we do not win at least 9 games, or at least win 8 games and beat Florida, then he should be fired. Continuing to accept mediocrity, and continuing to accept a 2-8 record against Florida gives the rest of us fans with a clue a bad name. Those of you that accept what Richt has done the last few years, and think he should stay at Georgia forever don’t have a clue. Georgia deserves better, has the money and ability to find someone better, and if Richt doesn’t improve by leaps and bounds this year, Georgia will find someone better.

Get a clue people!

Outside of the small home game teams on their schedule, every other team they play, with the exception of maybe Ole Miss, has a really, really good shot at them. They play at Clemson, at South Carolina (ha ha), Mississippi State is gonna kick the crap out of them, as well as Arkansas. Going to be a very long season for the toilet paper throwers. Can’t wait. Coming off a 6-7 record, the UGA games are probably considered “trap games” for the other teams on our schedule.

We are no longer the perennial East contenders, or even runners-up. Our coaching staff got out-game-planned by a pathetic Colorado staff last season, and couldn’t score a td on UCF.

I hope Richt can get us back to the top, but it’s doubtful.

But if Dan Mullen winds up in Athens, I can’t see him not “winning anything for 2 years…” It took him all of one season to rebuild MSU, and then in his second season, won 9 games, and most of all – BEAT FLORIDA!

He did this with Mississippi State’s talent.

It is simply amazing to me how people on these blogs keep refering to the past and not to the future. The schedule coming up is 2011, not 2011, 2009 or any other year. College football is not like the pros. where the players are tied to a team for x number of years. UGA has a lot of good players on the team and it is foolish to think that the head coach and staff can’t adapt to changing conditions and put a good team on the field this year. All this negative crap and the idiots that come on these blogs, simply to exist as an irritant, will not have any affect on this teams performance this year. Seems to me, if some of you folks are true DAWG fans, you would truely get behind your team, rather than supporting, with your comments, some of the idiots that post stupid, assinine, comments that make them look like they are still in elementary school.
The DAWGS can be very good this year if they play inspired and smart football. I for one, believe they can and will do just that. I believe they are hungry and will show it on the field.

I have jumped on and off the “Fire CMR” bandwagon over the last 12 months, and right now I’m confident – that CTG’s 3-4 clicks this year, and that Crowell is all he’s hyped up to be. Then again, I was confident when Goff assumed the HC job, and when Joe T and Joe C got their starting roles, so what do I know? I’m a blind UGA homer.

As of now, I believe CMR has earned the right to turn his program around. But I agree that this season will be his last stand. If our Dawgs drop Boise, I’ll be disappointed but still hopeful that they can run the SEC gauntlet. If UGA doesn’t win the SEC Least with weakened programs at UT, UF, and Vandy, I think CMR will be done at Georgia.

Columbus Dawg

I know that Murray is not a tall QB, but I like the fact that he was among the SEC leaders at the QB position as a first year player, and my point is with a defense last year I’m not so sure Auburn comes back on the Dawgs in such a fashion. If they don’t get six on the onside kick to start the 3rd quarter, it would have likley been much closer. I for one think that the Dawgs D will be back in large fashion in 2011, and this will make for a large weight being lifted off of the offense. Anyone notice how in 2007 when the D got it’s act together how Moreno suddenly had much more success? I do not know what prompted Vince Dooley to say that the Georgia faithful would be pleasantly surprised with the 2010 team, what with the first year D and all, but I think that making that statement about the 2011 team may not be too far fetched.

I know that the Wilson kid is a gamer, but I also know that defense in the ACC can not begin to compare with defense in the SEC, and you can bet that extra effort will be given by every team that the Aubies face this year.

Unfortunately the Bulldogs have a knack for losing games they should win. I anticipate another frustrating season, mainly because of a weak O-line, which has plagued us for years now. Losses to Boise State, South Carolina (Lattimore is all they need), Tennessee (Dooley will have them competitive this year), Mississippi State, Florida (new fire with Coach Smart), and Tech (much too close last year and they will only be better this year). Close games with Auburn and Ole Miss will make us wonder yet again if we will even be bowl-eligible. Until they prove otherwise, UGA should be in the bottom third of SEC teams on anyone’s list. Thank goodness for Vandy and Kentucky!

The game in Knoxville will not be close. UGA takes their 3rd beatdown in a row in there.

UGA has a chance in Nashville, Oxford, and at home against Kentucky.

That’s the best they can hope for in the SEC this year.

Shields,

Give us a rundown on who is playing for tenn. and why they are so great in your opinion. If you can’t do that, you are just another negative blogger on here, without substanial facts to support your negativity. I suspect that is what you are.
