Are there any ‘trap’ games lurking for Dawgs?

The Dogs' last visit to Knoxville didn't turn out so well. Could Tennessee be this year's trap game? (Associated Press)

Looking ahead at the 2011 season, most college football observers agree Mark Richt’s Dogs have one of the most formidable challenges in opening with Boise State and South Carolina. But you also hear a lot that after those first two games Georgia’s schedule looks pretty manageable, barring some unforeseen development like last year’s loss of A.J. Green for four games.

The toughest games are easy to identify once you get past those first two. Mississippi State still isn’t one of the SEC’s glamour programs and the game is in Athens, but the other Bulldogs were too much for our Dogs last season and so everyone should be expecting another tough game this year. Florida in Jacksonville is big every year. And even a depleted defending national champion Auburn team will have the Dogs’ full attention when they come to Athens.

So what looks like a potential “trap” game, one of those weeks when you’re caught looking ahead or feeling complacent and stumble over a lesser team you are expected to beat?

ESPN.com’s Edward Aschoff, in his analysis of Georgia’s schedule, pegs the Oct. 15 game against Vanderbilt in Nashville as Georgia’s trap game. “The Commodores are under a new, more energetic regime and are still a bit of an unknown,” he writes. “Coming off tough games against Mississippi State and Tennessee could also leave the Bulldogs a bit weary.”

And, of course, Florida is the next week. Still, Vandy is Vandy and picking the ‘Dores as the trap game seems a bit of a stretch to me.

Looking at the schedule, the Sept. 24 visit to Ole Miss might worry a few folks, but not much is expected from the Rebel Black Bears or whatever they are now.

Awhile back, CollegeFootballNews.com predicted an 8-4 record for the Dogs, beginning with a 2-0 start but back-to-back losses to Mississippi State and Tennessee, and Tennessee might indeed prove to be a trap for Georgia. It comes the week after the Mississippi State game, and while Derek Dooley’s Vols are still rebuilding, a couple of the uglier Georgia performances in recent seasons have been in Knoxville.

I think Tennessee is the one that worries me most as a possible trap for the Dogs.

Do you see any other games on the 2011 schedule that could catch Georgia looking elsewhere?

JB,

Another year of “Blame it on last year’s players”. It has nothing to do with coaching or discipline.

Calhoun,

Despite having gone through two complete coaching staff changes and losing the majority of two of their recruiting classes, Tennessee finished with the same record as Georgia.

Please explain.

Since our overpaid DC, thinks the Auburn offense is nothing but a gimmick offense, then Auburn is a trap game. If he thinks an offense that runs the ball down our throat andout our butts gimmicky, then we are in real trouble. Get rid of Grantham, he is a problem.

Tide roll once again shows how stupid he is…..Ole Miss lost their starting QB right before spring practice when he elected to return home to Oklahoma. The two QBs left on the roster looked like Abbott & Costello during thier spring game…I know I was there. Tide Roll please go away you don’t know sh_t about college football and you prove it every week you make a post. True Bama fans are embarressed by you as are most people that meet you in person are….Go talk to your dog about offensive lines etc……we really don’t care what you think!

lots of koolaide sloshing around today.

the truth is that every year of CMR’s tenure, the dogs have at least one game that they “phone in.”

he can’t maintain the intensity over the course of the season. to get to “the next level” we have to have that. you cant just recruit talent and show up anymore. this aint FSU playing in a basketball conference in the 90s…

ok, koolaiders, i’m done. you can start bashing me now…

Richt returns to his usual 10 wins season, and in 2012 Dogs make a run at the title.

@Coach Grobho: UT had same record as UGA. True, but UGA’s included blowing out the Vols in a laugher.

@Tide Roll: Chance Warmack, out of Westlake HS. Too bad Saban struck out on a Westlake alum that could have taken you to a national title. Had to really hurt that your arch rival rode him to a NC.

Mark my words…Dawgs are going to be a beast on Defense this year!!
D-Line, Linebackers will be unstoppable…if the secondary/D-backs step up watch out??
From the Erk Russell days (it’ll be under Dogs to wonder Dawgs…GATA!!)
If we have a running back & a receiver or two step up on offense this could be a year to remember!!
If we stumble once or twice in 2011…UGA will be 2012 NCAA Champions!!
Go Dawgs!!!!

Coach Grohbo, Tennessee has had three, yes three, losing seasons in the last six years. Their recruiting has been way down for several years, the few decent players they had have left or are hurt, Tyler Bray (5-30 in the spring game) sucks, no depth, and they play one of the toughest schedules in the SEC. Tennessee and Georgia have always played each other tough (in the Richt era) despite a couple of lop-sided games, and Georgia’s slide of late is well documented, however, Tennessee didn’t look like they belonged on the same field with Georgia last year and, in my opinion won’t this year either. The separation between UGA and the Vols finally reared its head last year and will continue. Prime example: Tennessee didn’t have a player drafted into the NFL until the 4th round this year — a trend which will continue for at least a few more years. Georgia either had the most or tied for the most in the SEC. Does that answer your question?

Tide Roll,

You need to worry about your own team. Our team has hit rock bottom and we’re on the way up..Alabama is definitely on the downswing. Last year, you were ranked preseason #1 and lost 3 games. You lost the best players on your team in Dareus, Julio Jones, Mark Ingram and Mcelroy. I’m predicting 4 or 5 losses this year alone and then Saban will bolt out of town.

All Dawgs must temper their expectations for 2011. We are in another rebuilding year but will be a couple of games better than 2010. I’m gonna say 8-4. The reasons for losing 4 games………. I think our offense is going to be terrible unless we get some big help from some freshman.

Calhoundawg,

You talk about either the most or next to the most players drafted in the NFL and yet you lost to every team last year on your schedule with a winning record. Until your coaches quit going for fieldgoals with 4th and inches on the 3 yard line, the losing in humpville to teams like Vandy and KY at home will continue. That being said, the rest of the SEC hopes Richt gets a lifetime contract.

Big (6′6″ 300lb.) Brandon Greene apparently doesn’t agree that the Tide’s on its way down. He’s an offensive tackle out of Atlanta and has already been named to the Under Armour All-American Team. He’s a reincarnation of another Georgia tackle; James Carpenter out of Hepzibah high and a No. 1 draft pick. Atlanta’s Chance Warmack is going to go high as well. Keep ‘em coming Richt/bobo! It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so pitiful!

After losing to Colorado and UCF, EVERY game is a trap game for UGA this year. UGA does not deserve much respect until it starts to win games. I’m optimistic that UGA is working hard to regain a place in the SEC race and a solid top 15 ranking this year, but they have everything to prove and everything to lose. Here’s to some luck and success.

No, I didn’t. I said Mark Richt had beaten UT three straight games in Knoxville — ‘01, ‘03, ‘05. And that’s when UT was good. Like I said, if we can get back to form, beating the Vols right now should be like shooting fish in a barrel, Knoxville or otherwise.

Bill, they are ALL trap games. Unfortunately for us we are the trap until we prove we can beat somebody. I never thought for an instant that I would have to actually stop and consider if we “could” beat Boise St. How far we have fallen. However, I think we come out 2-0 but at the same time some of those other teams will be rising up as well. We’ll have to fight every week sans the NM ST game.

After a 6/7 season, every game is a trap. UGA hasn’t proved it can outplay or overpower anyone. All games have to be played at a high aggression level. UGA hasn’t even been mentioned in the top teams and this is a joke and shows that we need to play with a chip on our shoulders every game and hit people in the mouth every play. UGA cannot afford for players to take plays off. We are now considered irrelevant and this is unacceptable. CMR says he knows what the hell he’s doing, all I can say is it better show early and often.
