Mark Richt is losing his patience … and that’s a good thing

Mark Richt gets a little thin-skinned sometimes when his strategy is questioned. (Associated Press)

In general, Georgia Bulldogs fans like it when “Evil” Richt, the guy who sent the team onto the field to draw a celebration penalty in Jacksonville in 2007, rears his head.

So when Mark Richt clashed verbally Thursday night at the Macon Bulldog club gathering with a fan upset about the Dogs’ lack of offensive success, several observers were quick to declare “Evil” Richt is back.

Actually, I’d say this was closer to “Prickly” Richt, the thin-skinned guy who has gotten his back up a few times in the past when a reporter or fan has questioned his strategy (usually something to do with offense, Richt’s longtime domain). You know, the guy who essentially said that unless you have been “in the arena” you don’t have any business questioning those who are “brave enough” because you’ve “never been in there.”

What happened Thursday was a fan pressed Richt during the question-and-answer session in Macon about Georgia’s running game (or the lack thereof), play-calling and, in particular, running backs coach Bryan McClendon.

“Prickly” Richt immediately stepped to the fore, dishing up a sarcastic response that the fan was “certainly close to an expert in football, I’m sure you are.”

He went on to note that championships have been won by running teams and passing teams alike. Then, as reported by the Macon Telegraph, came the money quote that has been racing about the Internet: “I see your frustration, I understand your frustration,” Richt said. “I wasn’t born yesterday, I’ve coached football for 25 years, so I know what the hell I’m doing, OK?”

The head coach also defended McClendon, saying he’s “a hell of a coach, he’s a hell of a recruiter. And I’m glad we got Bryan McClendon.”

Later, after “Prickly” Richt had ceded the spotlight to the usually calm, collected Richt, the coach apologized for not saying “heck.”

So much for Richt’s declaration early on this Bulldog Club tour that “I don’t feel any pressure. None at all.”

Besides the fact that his trek on the booster club circuit does seem to be getting to Richt a bit, what else should we take of the reappearance of “Prickly” Richt?

Hopefully, it means he hasn’t just lost patience with obstreperous fans who question his strategy, but also with the mediocre efforts he’s gotten from his players much of the past couple of seasons.

There have definitely been signs that’s the case, mainly in his recent comments about Washaun Ealey and the tailback position.

Richt touched on that talking with the Telegraph and once again indicated the job of starting tailback is Isaiah Crowell’s for the taking. Of the backs already at UGA, Richt said: “All those guys have had ample time in my opinion to take a hold of it. No one has. That’s been the most disappointing [thing for] me probably the last couple seasons is that, that position didn’t get solidified by somebody there who was capable.”

The coach couldn’t be any clearer than this: “The bottom line is we don’t have a tailback right now who deserves to start, in my opinion. We don’t have a guy that’s proven that he can do all the things we’re going to ask that guy to do. There’s nobody that will stand up and say, ‘This is my job, I’m taking it and I’m keeping it.’”

You know, I could really get to like this “Prickly” Richt guy.

The one thing I’m sorry to see Richt hasn’t stopped doing is refusing to also hold his underperforming COACHES accountable for THEIR failures as well.

He refused to do it for YEARS with Soft Willie, Jancek, & Fabris.

He’s doing it now with McClendon & Bobo.

This puts a damper on my hope for the future, because if RIcht refuses to hold his coaches as accountable as he seems to be his players, then Georgia HAS no future.

Hey Bill, Hope all is well. I have tried to tell people for years that CMR has fire in his gut. What you see formally is not what you see informally. I am glad to see him fight for his coaches and his young men. This should actually help him with his troops. When he defends them they will see his fire and hopefully step it up! Good for CMR! I agree that seeing some fire coming out of CMR is not a bad thing. I must also say that given how many points the team scored, even if you exclude ULL and ISU from the equation, Mike Bobo is doing a better job than he is being given credit for.

Hehe, good for Richt. Some of these armchair QB’s really should just learn they don’t have the complete picture of everything that’s going on. Richt cares just as much or more than any fan about how the Dawgs have slid. It shows, and I think he is more than qualified to get it back on track. Bad luck and some bad players have gotten us in this situation.

He did so when HIS job was on the line. He did so about 3 years too late.

I recall a former UGA coach who took that sort of tone with the fans and was fired–mainly for not beating Tech, UT or UF. I think the pressure is getting to Richt. I think it is fine to lose patience with the players or coaches, but when a coach who is already on the hot seat starts to respond that way, he is not doing himself any favors. In the past Richt would answer those questions with diplomacy. College sports require a far different tact that pro football. Few coaches can get away with those sorts of responses for very long.

What’s Richt defending, let me get this straight, his RUSHING track record?

Let’s look at it.

2008, finished 5th in SEC in rushing.

2009, finished 8th.

2010, finished 10th.

Richt can’t fix this.

Anyone notice a trend?

Richt is incompetent when it comes to rushing, if he wasn’t, he would have fixed this 2 years ago.

You know darn well the problem is the defense. The offense is just as good if not better than it has been the last 10 years.

I have agreed with your stats about ppg and not allowing 30+ points. If Grantham does that and we get back to BVG type of defenses, no one is going to complain about bobo, McClendon, richt or anyone on the offensive side of things.

It amazes me how short people’s memories are.

Stop bringing up Willie Martinez he’s gone.

However if you must re-hash Willie let’s remember a couple of things:

1. people were begining to be unhappy following the 06 season.
Richt gave the man another chance and the result was the 2007 season which gave us one of the better defenses we’ve had. I don’t recall too many people calling for Willie’s head following that season and #3 ranking.

2. In the first qtr of the the 08 season we lost Jeff Owens who was the anchor of the d-line to a knee injury, and as it turned out that was the first of many injuries.

3. When Willie didn’t get it turned around in 09 he was let go. But let’s not also forget that in 09 the turnover ratio was horrible partly because of the defense but mostly because of the offense. Not to mention the numerous times the defense was put in horrible field position.

I’m not defending Willie mind you, but I am defending the notion that CMR waited too long to make the change. The noise didn’t start about Willie until 06, Richt would have looked foolish firing him after the 07 season. 08 wouldn’t have been fair to fire him due to the high number of injuries. 09 was his final chance, he failed and was fired.

Truly how many people were calling for and complaining about WM after the 07 season?

Let it go.

Richt is still a first time head coach and he had great intial success and the adversity he’s faced the past few seasons are the first in his head coaching career. I think the man is entitled to a little learning curve. In this new world of instant gratification I think that fact gets lost.

If you want some perspective, go and look up the records for the first 10 years or so for Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno, Vince Dooley, Frank Beamer into today’s world all of them would have been fired within their first 5 seasons. Richt is a very methodical and thoughtful man who doesn’t make knee-jerk decisions and we should be glad of that.

Go Dawgs!

Watching video of Washaun Ealey when he “decided not to block” last year evoked flashbacks to Boise State-Virginia Tech. You know, the game where BSU defensive end Billy Winn spent as much time in the Hokie’s backfield as VT QB Tyrod Taylor did.

Barring fortuity, Winn’ll be in the Dome come Labor Day weekend. There and then, blocking like Washaun’s against Arkansas just ain’t gonna work.

Coach Richt’s criticism of Ealey’s failing to do his job when the game was on the line seems fitting and proper, and fans appreciate Richt’s new and public approach towards lousy play. Hopefully, Richt’s done what it takes to wake Washaun up. Neither bench-sitting in Athens nor playing in Statesboro this year will earn Ealey respect and a chance to play in the NFL next year. The bottom line: Richt’s comments in Augusta calling Washaun out seem likely to be productive.

Richt’s sarcasm toward the Macon fan is a horse of a different color, however.

You don’t need 25 years experience coaching football to feel the humiliation of losses to Colorado and Central Florida. Heck, you don’t even have to know the difference between a defensive lineman and a placekicker to know that Florida has owned us the past 25 years.

As irritating as the Macon fan’s questions and comments undoubtedly were, Richt’s sarcastic response seems petty from afar. I wasn’t there, but, unless I’m reading too much into it, Richt’s interrogator seems an elder Georgia man who’s supported the Bulldogs longer than Richt’s been on this earth.

Even if I’m wrong, Richt’s public impatience with fan frustration just doesn’t seem productive in contrast to Richt’s well-aimed Augusta critique of Washaun.

Mark, I love you man.!

But beating up on disappointed Georgia fans won’t get the job done.

Beating up on BSU, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, and Georgia Tech is the only thing that makes the statement, ‘This is my job, I’m taking it and I’m keeping it.”

Seriously, that guy who was asking questions is probably the same guy who has an entire room of his house devoted to UGA. Richt needs to remember who butters his bread. If Richt doesn’t think Ealey’s 5.5 yards per carry, and scoring a td every 14 carries last year was enough to win the starting poisition, he needs to be fired immediately. Just to put Ealey’s productivity in perspective, 5.5 beats Herschel Walker’s average, and 14 to 1 td to carry ratio matches Moreno’s. Richt is lost in space.

I think it’s good for Richt to feel some pressure. Kudos to the fan for asking the question. I can only hope that Richt hears more before his tour is finished. Even though I have criticized coach in the past I would much prefer that he continue in his position than hire a new one. But he’s gonna have to get it done this season if he wants to coach in Athens in 2012. For what it’s worth I do feel optimistic about this season. With our talent I think 8 wins are there for the taking . . . possibly 9. Solid coaching could get us 1-2 more. Whether that will be enough for McGarity, I don’t know. But I do know too much comfort and/or familiarity can be dangerous. So I don’t have problem with fans asking uncomfortable questions or making uncomfortable comments . . . as long as they are fair and relevant If it ticks Richt off, he should know winning will quickly cure it.

I am tired of reading Ealey’s great stats. If Ealey wants to play he has to do the entire job. That’s leadership at practice, attending all required classes and functions, and going full speed on all plays. I don’t know if its lack of focus or skill (I believe focus) but there have been too many times when he misses the block on a blitz pickup or isn’t ready on a hot read, and the play is blown. He is a heck of a runner, but the maturity is not there. His dream is the NFL, but everyone in the NFL has to read defenses and block.

Richt has expressed his disappointment and says the tailback position is wide open. Ealey has just a good a chance as anyone to step up and take it. It isn’t a skills issue. Its a commitment issue. I hope he takes it, and Richt would like nothing better. At the end of the day it is up to Ealey to get the job done.

As Timbodog (I think) pointed out, you’re expected to be politie, even to obnoxious rednecks, when you’re a teenager paid minimum wage working at a grocery store (in my case, it was a department store).

Even more is expected of you when you represent a great state’s flagship university more universally than does its president.

Again, if Richt did apologize, then I wish it would have been printed. As it is, they did not print it.

Richt’s PR people need to make sure they PRINT IT. Get it out there somehow.

I’m just saying it looks bad, that’s all. My thoughts on this have nothing to do with how I feel about Richt.

Like I have said time and time again, I feel very strongly about Richt as a man.

It is Richt the coach that I do not support.

The biggest change that Saint Mark needs to make is to stop recruiting the low-class illiterates and thugs who he seems to think will win for him and keep his oversized paychecks coming in. People like Marcus Dowtin, A.J. Green, Washaun Ealey, Caleb King, and others too numerous to mention are not team players, they’re thug wannabes who are much closer to a gang than a team.

It’s sickening to see felons and goons like these representing the state’s flagship university.

Because people keep questioning my loyalty, let me state it very clearly:

I am a UGA fan. I did not attend UGA, but instead another state school.

I think Richt is a good and decent man (which, sadly, is rare in college football), but I don’t think he is a great football coach. My biggest problem with him is he has no single strength which separates him from the pack.

I would be fine with keeping Richt if he would be willing to hire high-quality assistants, but he has been either unwilling or unable to do so for much of his career, particularly on offense.

Grantham might be a good hire, and I don’t think all of the top guys turning us down was Richt’s fault.

But we HAVE to get a better OC than Bobo…yesterday.

If not, Richt’s gotta go.

It is my understanding that Mark Richt will be coaching the Bulldogs in 2011. Its counter-productive to not support him. Did you support him in 2002, 2005, and 2007? Think about it. Bad seasons happen. Good coaches, however, don’t grow on trees. If you really want to look at the past two seasons, look who was running the ball. The two cancers (3 and 4). Now is the time to give 100% support. Good things are happening in Athens.

I’m not convinced that CMR get’s it. He keeps going around in circles. Getting beat by West Virginia in the Sugar Bowl is one example. Our passive team had to wake up after quickly falling behind by 28 points. Everyone in the dome knew WVU was going to fake the punt accept our coach’s who for years have been committed to fall back and not put pressure on the kicker. After this loss CMR said he would let Bobo take over the offensive play calling so he could be free to manage the team with a clear head. He also said he would be able to get more emotionally involed. He said he could not that and call plays. Now he’s telling us he’s going back to studing game film.

I’ve been pretty critical of Coach Richt the last few seasons, and not without good reason. And it sounds like this reporter was a bit out of line. But look at it this way: if the reporter is nice to Richt publically and then proceeds to trash him behind his back, he’s a two-faced slimball. And if he criticizes him to his face, he is out of line. So either way, he’s the bad guy.

The bottom line is this: Richt’s teams have been awful the last three years. And when you make 3 million a year and don’t deliver results, you are going to get scrutinized. If Coach Richt doesn’t want to answer these kind of questions, then deliver results on the field. When I do a good job, my boss cuts me slack. But if I under-perform, I’m going to be micromanaged. Slack is earned not given, and Coach Richt should know this better than anyone.

‘Go Dogs’…
Excellent comment on instant gratification. You could write an incredible list of coaches who were hung in effigy after only five years. Add Dean Smith to that list.

Having said that, as much as I love Mark Richt and the energy he brought to the program…remember his first year or two when he was running the no huddle pretty much the entire game? I can’t say whether he knows how to turn the problem around. He seems to have fixed those stupid directional kicks. All we heard last year was the offensive line was without question the strong point of the team and we were sure to have a strong running game. We could hardly run the ball on LA Lafayette. We were told they were talented, juniors and seniors who had the most consecutive starts collectively over any other team in the SEC. Those guys could not run block and Aaron Murray was running for his life over half the time. I’d love to see what he could do given some time in the pocket. We’re going to miss Kris Durham. That kid had sure hands, not afraid to go over the middle knowing he was going to get blasted and he played with more heart than anyone on that team.

I’m rambling but my point when I started on Richt is I don’t know that I have the confidence that he can ‘turn it around’. Spring games don’t tell you much but Murray seemed to have happy feet while Mason and LeMay looked composed. If LeMay has the skill set of a Terrell Pryor type like I’m hearing, is there any chance we can at least have a package of spread offense plays? Surely one of those two will be redshirted this year?

They are his customers, and if he cannot keep his composure and insult them with his arrogant “you ain’t been there so you can’t understand” attitude, then we need to just go ahead and send him packing right now.

If King and Ealey and the other backs are slackers or can’t get it done, then why does Richt keep them on football scholarships?

This is the problem with Richt. Bottom line is that now he is feeling the heat, he has no more excuses, and and can’t handle the truth.

Couldn’t finish my post from earlier. I was talking about the O-line. When we lost Sturdivant it seems everyone got very worried. And i agree to a point. but this goes back to a larger concern for me. Why do we not have someone to step in right away? It is because we didn’t recruit enough O-linemen and the ones we recruited this year are all developmental IMO. Eventhough, we could get surprised by someone coming in, the fact still remains we are short there. And therefore I’m affraid that the Fall practices will be “light” for this reason. I believe “again” that we put too much emphasis on skill players and not enough on the trenches. We needed at least two(2) O-linemen that could help us right away. If anymore get injured, don’t expect too much.

I’m on board with Timbodog’s comments. Given the last five years, it seems more than a little arrogant for him to respond like that. Yes, he’s a muliti-millionaire ten year coach of a very large and well resourced SEC school. Yes, he SHOULD know more about the team than anybody else. But when Bulldog fans don’t care enough about the team to voice pointed questions about it’s performance, then the situation is a lot worse than a 6-7 season.

Truthfully, it’s hard for me to see that Richt is leading the Bulldog nation any where. I’m not a fan of playing musical coaches, but I see only mediocre seasons going forward with Richt. The Bulldogs have the size and talent to beat enough division II and bottom dwelling SEC teams to hover around 7-6 or 8-5, but really, who sees us consistently beating Florida or Alabama, or LSU? We are not contenders in the SEC now, and BCS hopes are pipe dreams at this point. Richt has been given incredible resources and in my opinion, the results are just not there. I don’t believe he knows why he won so many games in the first five years, or why he’s lost so many in the last five. I keep going back to the Liberty Bowl. I heard Richt say all the things he always says. The team is ready, we’re fired up, we’re going to play a tough game. If he thought THAT team was ready, there is a total disconnect between his perception and reality.

I love watching the Bulldogs play, even though it’s often a frustrating event. The only great thing I’m expecting from the Dawgs this year, is that it’ll lilkely be Richt’s last. I hope McGarity is already thinking through how he’ll handle and who he’ll pick for 2012. There may be some tough seasons ahead, but I for one, would rather see the Dawgs attempt to get back to national prominence than continue on our current path.

Every account I have read said nothing about the guy asking a serious question, or even a pointed question. So stop defending the guy because he simply asked a question. Whining is not asking a question. If you point is that that 100 guys aught to be able to stand up one at a time and whine, then great, make that point. If you folks think this guy is a hero because he had the balls to do what none of you have the balls to do, stop treating him like a princess getting his wittle feewing hurt if somebody poked back.

Every account I have read said that Richt went into geat detail to explain what steps have been taken to address the running games (and of cource none of you want to read that part) and only after that did he pause and say “look……”. I woud be willing to bet that he was not pointing to the guy, not looking at the guy, and it felt very much like more of a general statement to room.
