What’s it gonna be, Washaun?

Washaun Ealey has come to something of a crossroads in his career at UGA. (Associated Press)

Washaun Ealey has come to something of a crossroads in his career at UGA. (Associated Press)

Man, it’s got to be tough to be Washaun Ealey right now.

This time last year a lot of folks were predicting the Georgia tailback was going crack the 1,000-yard mark in the 2010 season and give the Dogs a potent running attack that would allow them to bring their untested quarterback along slowly.

As it turned out, the QB scrambling was more of a running threat than the tailback position much of the time. And while Ealey did lead the team, running for 811 yards and 11 touchdowns, he started out the season missing a game because he’d been driving with a suspended license (something his coaches had warned him about), fumbled at key times in losses and developed the reputation of spending more time running his mouth than the ball. Georgia’s running game ended up ranking 10th in the conference.

Then, just as Georgia was signing Isaiah Crowell, who looks to be the next great SEC running back, Ealey got suspended from the team for skipping a punishment run, and then had to sit out most of spring practice with a hamstring injury.

And now, as our Chip Towers reported, Ealey has been put on notice by his head coach that he’s still sharing Russ’ doghouse.

Asked about Ealey at the Greater Augusta Bulldog Club spring meeting Wednesday night, Richt was uncharacteristically blunt.

“Washaun has a ways to go still to show me that he deserves to start or even play right now,” the coach said. “He has a ways to go in my book. We’ll see. I love him, though.”

Richt’s tough love got even tougher for Ealey, though, as the Leather Helmet Blog points out. Responding to a question about true freshman Crowell being prepared to block in the SEC, Richt talked about just how important blocking is for a back and hung Ealey out to dry again, noting that when Georgia was trying to come back against Arkansas last season, the drive faltered because “the back decided he wasn’t going to block on that play.”

Yep. Ealey.

It will be interesting to see how the rising junior responds to this very public back of the hand from Richt, who generally is known for building his players up. Most times, coaches deal with problem players in the relative privacy of the locker room or closed practices, but Richt apparently has decided that’s not working with Ealey, so he’s called him out.

I’m as excited as any Dog fan about the impending arrival of Crowell. But Georgia is going to need more than one effective tailback in order to have a successful season. It’s possible the oft-injured Caleb King can fill that role. Or maybe tough-running but inexperienced Ken Malcome.

But the back on the roster who, on paper, seems to be best equipped to give the Dogs a one-two punch at running back is Ealey.

The question is whether he can overcome the biggest obstacle — himself.

Ealey needs to man up and succeed at Georgia.

If he quits, transfers and leaves, he will regret it fo the rest of his life.

If he comes back and does well, Richt will be the first to congratulate him.

Kudos to Richt for continuing to try and motivate this guy. Not that Ealey deserves any more chances — but Richt is leaving the door open for him. Important time in a young man’s life, when he decides if he’s going to finally grow up and take responsibility for himself. Hope he can turn the corner because I still think we need him.

Recently, AJC reported that Dexter Moody stated he had talked to Washaun. Washaun told Moody he wanted this year to be his last year in college. He wanted to play well and hopefully go pro. Wonder how that is going to work out for him? Moody and Ealey were together at Emanuel. That must have been a nightmare. UGA shouldn’t have stopped cutting ties with just Moody. Geoff, I have not thought about it that way but I think you have nailed it. Coach Richt has talked about the respect that he has for Spurrier as a coach, so borrowing that tactic from him is not far fetched. I like it. Since Spurrier left UF, I have read some things he has said, and I too have a new found respect for Ole’ Stevie. Spurrier’s hate for UGA goes back to his playing days in his Heisman year when Dooley’s Dawgs, mostly Bill Stanfill whupped up on him and Stanfill sacked Spurrier a few times in that game, someone said Stanfill asked “Did I step on your dress, Stevie”? That’s just good old college football rivalry right there, and when Spurrier got in the UF job, he set his sights on getting revenge on the Dawgs, and I hate to say it but he did in a big way. As far as Richt and Ealey goes, I say whatever works. I know that the biggest part of the Dawg faithful want to see Ealey do well, and if he does then so does UGA’s running game. Go Dawgs!!!

I agree that Spurrier’s issues with Georgia were definitely personal but that doesn’t mean you can’t borrow a few tricks from the evil genius. Even if that is the way CMR is going, I still don’t think it’s something you throw out there willy-nilly. Just for the repeat offenders that threaten to drag down the performance of the team because they can’t grow up and act like adults.

They’re getting prepared as well for life after football and they’ve got to learn that sometimes your screwups have serious consequences. You never know but if this was more prevalent the last few years, players like Montez Robinson may still be on the team. I guess you could say I would use it as a last resort but would definitely not be afraid to throw it out there if internal measures keep failing.

Spot on Bill
When you raise kids with morals, ethics , integrity and other value such as respect for your parents and adult authority it is hard to believe all kids are not raised like that. Most kids in the 50’s and 60,s had this up bringing. Starting in the wild 70’s with a lot least values and a huge increase in single parenthood respect for your elders became more of putting kids on the same level as adults. CMR had to realize that all kids are not raised the way he raised his kids and with the changing times being able to establish authority from the start takes a strong will and more lake SPURRIER OR SABAN approach . There is no doubt who is in charge and it is my way or the high way , PERIOD. McGarity knows that discipline has been CMR’s biggest problem and is trying to change it before it is too late.
CMR is a very good coach and if McGarity can put a lot of Spurrier and Saban in him he can become great. I’m one who hopes he is successful.

The bottom line to this sad story is that the Dream Teamer is going to be the starter and the other backs will only be used to spell him. That’s life. Everyone cannot be a starter, everyone cannot be a significant contributor.

Both Ealey and King are sad, but important reminders, that recruiting splendid athletes does not always equate to becoming splendid team players. If it did, Coach Richt would have a boat load full of championships and appearances in BCS Bowls.

It’s the down side to recruiting four and five star rated high schoolers. Sometimes they believe they are so gifted and have always been so dominate that all they need to do to line up and play the game. They can’t be coached because they believe there is nothing to teach them. If you think I believe you should not recruit four and five star athletes, you misunderstand my comments. Most turn out as expected (maybe not as NFL players but at least as good, servicable college team members) but a significant number do not for a number of variables, one being the one I speak to.

You can take a good football player and teach him to be a great football player. You can take some great athletes and teach them to be great football players. You cannot teach some great athletes anything.

A perfect example of great athletes versus great players is Francouer and McCann. Jeff was as gifted a athlete as I ever saw but he could not be coached into becoming a great baseball player. He simply could, or would, not buy into the notion that he had to learn to be as gifted a baseball player as he was an athlete. Brian is an athlete who has become a great baseball player by learning how to play baseball, a much different and more difficult task than simply using your God given talent to play baseball.

Kyle Davies is another example. Nothing on God’s green earth could convince Kyle or his father Hiram that Kyle needed to learn how to be a better baseball player in order to thrive in the major leagues because they both believed that Kyle was a great baseball pitcher. Again, being a splendidly gifted athlete does not always equate to being a splendid team player.

Ironically, both Jeff and Kyle are playing out the end of their lost careers in Kansas City. Kyle’s ERA continues to hover around 6.0. I know, Jeff is currently hitting around .300 – let’s check back on January 1, 2012 to see if either of these two are still on anyone’s major league roster.

Flat out bizarre Richt throwing Ealey under the bus for a missed block, when it was a cut block, Ealey did cut his guy on that play, flattened him, ice age decision maker Murray held onto the ball for so long he got sacked. Mr. Panic messed up again at the end of a game, A. Murray.

Can’t blame all 27 of Murray’s sacks on Ealey. The guy just panics, can’t decide, sits in the pocket all day. Got sacked 2x more than Joe Cox, who couldn’t run.

In fact, if Richt’s blaming players, why the silence on Murray’s 4 turonover disaster against Florida?

This is why Mark Richt should be fired. He throws players under the bus for his own and his coaches failures. The alleged “decision not to block” was right here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSHLJeeHvww

What coach in their right mind puts a running back in one-on-one blocking with a defensive end? Ealey went low to make a block on a guy who outweighed him by nearly 60 pounds and they guy made a good play sidestepping the block and went on to hit Murray. This was a flat out coaching mistake. Bad call for the blocking scheme. That happens though. What makes it worse is when you try to through one of your players under the bus. He did the same thing with Caleb King a few years ago and he’ll do the same thing with Crowell if we don’t figure out he’s just making excuses for his own mistakes and fire him before he gets the chance.

How you can blame a freshman QB for anything that happened after the season Murray had is beyond me. Did he make mistakes? Sure. He’s a freshman playing in the NFL’s Farm League. Saying he had 15 rushes for zero yards is the dumbest statistic in football. He got sacked (a lot) in that game. Some of those were his fault. But he was also our best threat to run the ball most of the time, our only threat to pass it, and played 4 games without the best offensive talent in the conference.

Ealey outscored Caleb 6 to 1 in touchdowns last season. Can you imagine the lack of production if Ealey jets to another team? Caleb scored 2 touchdowns, the whole year. Ealey had 11.

Ealey also averages 5.5 yards per carry at Georgia, which is higher than Herschel Walker’s average.

Ealey also averages the same td to carry ratio as Walker, a td every 20 touches.

The difference?

Dooley gave Herschel 35 carries a game, Richt gets Ealey 13 carries a game.

Murray got 14 carries for 9 yards against Arkansas. 1/2 yard a carry.

Ealey got over 4 yards a carry.

Why was Richt calling running plays for Murray running the ball 14 times when he only got 9 yards instead of handing the ball to Ealey, who got over 4 a carry?

Makes no sense.

Richt’s leash is pretty short in many people’s opinion. Ealey has been a problem for Richt for the last year and a half. Something tells me this kid just won’t grow up. Richt has to turn this program around. Many people think that is about winning and losing. I think it has more to do with discipline and effort and character. If Ealey doesn’t have it, Richt cannot ignore it. Even if it means a loss or two more. The Tressel situation makes me more comfortable with allowing Richt the chance to turn this program around by bringing in the right kind of kids and getting rid of the wrong ones.

@DawginLex…appreciate your view point, but I have to disagree being that #3 has been here two years and hasn’t closed out the position…I think he is better than what a lot of folks on this site believe…he a tough physical runner and did so behind a suspect line last year…sure he fumbled and was a knot head concerning driving, but when CMR put on that dog and pony show with the empty RB position, well maybe that was more than a 19/20 year old kid could stand (BTW, didn’t his turn out to be an NCAA infraction…everyone makes mistakes)…watched clips of Crowell and he had one heck of an O-line opening holes for him…he’s kind of on the small size, going 190, but maybe he’s tough running inside the tackles…so in closing, I still would like to see him transfer for HIS sake, but would also love to have him stick around for UGA’s sake…

Leave it up to Richt to figure out a way to underuse a RB averaging more yards per carry than Herschel Walker.

Here’s a highlight from Ealey’s 5 td game, the guy’s a gamer, give him the ball 20x, and UGA has never lost a gem:

Ealey broke ALL of Herschel Walker’s record in high school.

Ealey averages more yards per carry, and the same td per carry as Walker did at Georgia, overall, Ealey’s been more productive than Walker in these 2 areas, which are the only 2 Ealey can control. Ealey also has a way of winning games when he gets the ball 20 times or more. Won 100%.

Looks like Ealey is Coach Richt’s new Mettenberger.

Boy, was Coach Richt ever wrong last year?

After Mettenberger left, the team only won 6 games, imagine how bad it will get if Ealey leaves, Coach Richt might go 4-8 without any receivers or backs.

At this point, it’s best for Ealey and UGA football to go their separate ways. Ealey is not serious, probably immature, and has been coached up enough to get it before he graduates. Plus, now he has been thrown under the bus and run over by da Preacha Man. For the UGA, team spirit would probably improve with Ealey gone. Ealey also encumbers a scholarship. So, Waushaun, Georgia Southern needs a running back and you can be a star down there….

I think Richt has a lot to prove before Ealey even decides to PRACTICE, much less play a game. Richt has to earn back Ealey’s respect after losing it. Not sure Richt will get to see Ealey run the ball again in a Georgia uniform, but will see him again in the SEC.

Right on MacGod.

Richt has blown it so many times with Ealey:
Benching Ealey after TO, but letting Murray start after COMMITING 5x more turnovers
Not getting Ealey more reps when he proved himself early
Falsely targetting & accusing Ealey of not working out hard enough, from watching a video
The whole recruiting Crowell dibacle, lining up Crowell in the backfield while Ealey was the starter showed lack of respect
Naming Crowell starter next season, before Crowell worked out or practiced.

Richt’s in Ealey’s doghouse, for sure, don’t know if Richt can get himself out of this mess, looks worse than his failed relationship with Gray.

Guys,
Think back to the last two seasons and you will realize how much better shape we are in now. Our depth is superb, so I would find something else to be anxious about. Malcome showed serious sparks of SEC power on GDay, and that was backed up by the coaches saying he ran that way on the scout team last year. He was also hurt. He looks like he will be our best TB in some time to me. King, Ealey, and Thomas are another year older, stronger and faster, and if you will think back you will remember that one or two were suspended, hurt, or in the fumbling doghouse all of last year! If they simply stop fumbling, stay out of trouble, and stay healthy they will have better years (assuming the line opens holes). Crowell is a wild card–it is possible he could make an impact as a freshman. The competition should make them all much better, so barring major issues we should be good at TB in ‘11.

Macdog, when Mett lied to CMR after the situation Mett created (admittedly he was a kid), for which he well could have been on the chain gang, CMR would not have any credibility anywhere if he had let it go. Gray made the choice to leave because he realized he wasn’t going to play. Richt gave him plenty of opportunities. Ealey can still win the Heisman. All he has to do is stay out of trouble, start working like there is no tomorrow, and then go out and rack up 2000 yards next season with less than four fumbles. None of his problems were caused by CMR.

UGA blog lit up in gleeful pandemonium when each “barely” made it over the
NCAA minimum requirements, and made it to Athens via UGA’s infamous
and dubious “Special Admissions” program.

And now, the VERY SAME UGA fans use all manner of vile descriptions to
throw both under the bus, with descriptions like:

“Ealy is a “cancer” to the program
(Yes it’s shocking somoene would write that, but hey, no surprise since its from UGA fans)
Dump him
Kick him out
Run him off
He’s a stain on the program
Pull his scholly

And many other similar comments.

A great many UGA fans, by their own example, are real P’s of S.

Why would ANY recruit want to go to UGA,

I agree this does sound like a move the “ol’ ball coach” would do. CMR is a fan of him. I think this doesn’t come from as much of Ealy’s play as his attitude. I think coming off last season with a lack of hustle in practice says alot, missing runs etc. not giving 100% . I think blocking is CMR’s code word for do what your supposed to do. That play wasn’t what lost the game, the D lettin Mallet pas down the field. it wasn’t the O in SC game it was the d not stoping the run.
I believe Ealy has the talent to be one of the best ever. But he needs to focus and realize he’s just a part of the TEAM. Look at him after a good run and you see him excited, but when the game is over and the team has loss, he is still smiling, he is not watching the game when he’s not in it. I hope he gets it together. We need him, Even if Crowell does well, what if he goes down due to injury?

I just don’t think backs come along too often like Ealey. Besides Moreno, there really hasn’t been a running back at Georgia in 30 years that challenged Herschel Walker type numbers. Ealey has a better per carry average than Herschel Walker, the back many consider to be the best who ever played in college ball. True, Moreno got a td every 14 carries, better than Herschel’s 1 per 20, but Ealey got a td every 14 carries in 2010, just like Moreno averaged. Ealey’s going to rewrite the record books in the NFL, just don’t think he’ll be at Georgia another season, might be gone in a few weeks.

I asked that question about Crowells blocking ability and Richt responded just as it’s being reported here but he also went on to say that there were two receivers breaking open and if the back picks up the block, Murray probabily makes the play.

Yes I too hope this straightens Mr. Ealey out, but one thing my fellow Dawgs unless we get this problem on our offensive and defensive lines straightened out. It doesn’t matter how good the QB, RBs, LBs, DBs and receivers are. Football is won in the trenches, it is just that simple. Championships are won on the offensive and defensive lines. Yes talented one of a kind players can make a difference on an occasional basis, but to be a consistent winner you have to have the big ugglies playing at a very high level. Lets face it we haven’t had that for the last two plus years some of that was due to injuries, guys quitting football, bad attitudes etc. But anyway I will be pulling for my Dawgs as I have for as long as I can remember— 1959 is my earliest memories as my father listened on WRGA on Saturdays to the games. CMR has tried almost every motivational tool he could with Ealey, no doubt in private. He has tried to appeal to his maturity when it is obvious that Ealey hasn’t got that. I think even CMR, is on his last leg with this young fellow. He is simply trying to prod this kid into becoming a man, and this is his last shot. I don’t know how much more time you can invest in Ealey, when you need to get the other backs experience and with a guy like Malcome on the sidelines, it might be time to pull the trigger on Ealey. Ealey has all the physical skills, but none of the mental skills to succeed, unless he decides to become a team player and leave his ego at the door. A good athelete that figures he can conform when he wants to and is too blind to see he is throwing away his future. That is truely sad.

The mastermind called for 2 of the wideouts to go deep when all UGA needed was 4 yards to get a 1st down, and probably win the damn game. When is this guy and his puppet going to ever learn how to call plays in critical situations. THe answer is never, and that’s why he is already sitting up his excuses for I.C. by talking about how backs need to block in his scheme. If he and BoBo had of recruited talented O.L., maybe the backs wouldn’t have to be called on to block so much. Ealey is in a pickle here. He has told many on the team he wants desperately to have a good season then bolt to the NFL. The NFL dream is the ONLY thing keeping him in Athens. CMR knows this and is kind of using him as a unnecessary punching bag at the moment. Ealey would transfer to GSU but that NFL dream would take a hard hit. What happens in the end I don’t really know. Everyone except CMR is being really quiet. I can’t really get anyone to tell me anything except Ealey is working out with the team and looks in shape. I do think the hamstring thing was a phony and CMR knew it….which may be the reason why CMR is taking some frustration out on the trail.

You are also starting to see the frustration and pressure on CMR at these meetings. McGarity has told the staff that if you go 0-2 then most everyone is gone. Except Todd Grantham who would be named interim head coach for the rest of the season. Chris Peterson is first on the list of replacements from what I hear.

Exactly my point. CMR has given him a lot more chances to reform his ways and he continues to be the same old immature kid, instead of growing up and acting responsibly. I am sure CMR would loved to have seen him turn his life and attitude around as he really does care for these young folks on his team. He did not throw him under the bus, as some say on here. As for CMR always blaming others for UGA’s poor season last year or any time. I believe that is a bogus assumption as well. He has taken full responsibility for his record and stated it numerous times. People that want to hate CMR and UGA will say almost anything to be negative as this and other blogs show. CMR is a decent human being and a good coach in my opinion and he deserves every chance to turn it around this season.

I don’t want to see Washaun Ealey fail at Georgia. I believe this man has a bucket full of talent and could make an positive impact on the field this up-coming season. I don’t know why he can’t seem to get it together and become the tailback most thought he would be, but this is the last year he is going have to influence the coaches, the fans and the NFL and make everyone believe he has what it takes.

Washaun take some time and figure out if you want to be remembered a productive back or a failure. You have all the tools to be the best running back in the SEC this year and doing so will go far to erase all the negatives and put you in the position to be recognized by the NFL.

Best of luck,
