Hitman’s confession doesn’t inspire great confidence

Bacarri Rambo's injury aside, safety remains a big concern. (Associated Press)

There are two ways to look at Bacarri Rambo being out for the rest of spring practice with a sprained MCL.

On the one hand, Rambo has been a solid if inconsistent presence in the secondary and missing all those drills and the G-Day game certainly won’t help him, but it probably won’t hamper him much in the long term. And it does mean the three players battling for the other safety position will get more badly needed reps, which is a good thing.

Overall, safety is the position that concerns me the most, since Alec Ogletree moving to linebacker means the top choices to play opposite Rambo are Jakar Hamilton and Shawn Williams, both of whom were eventually beaten out for the starting spot last year by a true freshman.

Hamilton, a JUCO transfer, looked awfully shaky in his five starts last year and after seeing what he had to say in the Athens Banner-Herald, it’s no wonder.

“Last year, I came out here and I didn’t really know what I was doing,” the player formerly known as the “Hitman” said. “This year, I’m into the film more. I’m studying the playbook even more. Now I know what I’m doing. I know the concept of the defense. I get to play faster. I don’t have to think as much and I get to make plays. … Last year around this time, I would say I couldn’t even tell you a cover 4 from a blitz. Now I’m on it.”

Wow. The fact that he was initially considered our best alternative at safety under those circumstances tells you a lot about Georgia’s defensive personnel problems last season.

The worry is that at safety we’re still talking about the same players this season.

Those who like talking Dogs should be pleased with Friday’s announcement that Atlanta’s WCNN-AM 680 the Fan signed a five-year deal to be “the official sports talk radio station of the Georgia Bulldogs,” supplementing the coverage UGA already receives through the Bulldogs radio network headed up by WSB-AM.

Not only will Mark Richt’s weekly press conferences now be broadcast in Atlanta, the station (which is also heard on the FM dial at 93.7) will air a 30-minute UGA roundtable-type show three times a week and its sister station, 1230 AM the Fan 2 (WFOM-AM in Marietta), will broadcast the Diamond Dogs games starting in May.

UGA legend Buck Belue, who is half of the Buck and Kincade team on 680 the Fan weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m., notes that the deal between UGA and the station is all about access — for the school, which gets another outlet in the state’s major media market, and for the fans, who get more Bulldog-oriented programming.

As Belue said, it “looks like a good fit. Both partners benefit. The Georgia fans should love the coverage. Sure hope they saved me a spot on a Roundtable Show, or let me anchor some of the coverage from Athens. Put in a good word for me, if you can.”

OK, Buck, consider this a good word on your behalf. I know some readers of this blog have made it clear they are not particularly enamored of Buck as a radio-TV personality, but most Georgia fans I’ve heard from over the years still have a great deal of fondness for Belue and his place in UGA sports history. And I’ve always appreciated both his in-depth knowledge of and his devotion to the UGA athletic programs.

Keep barking, Buck!

I’ll be on spring break and away from the Blawg next week, spending at least a couple of days in my favorite place in the world. There’s nothing finer than Athens in springtime!

wow our coaches last year started a player at safety who didn’t even know the coverages he was supposed to run? that’s dangerous, even more so because he’s our safety.

Jakar Hamilton’s ignorance of collegiate defensive schemes is one of the reasons why coaches are generally reluctant to sign JUCO players. He really shouldn’t be so candid with his comments. He needs a PR person.

Buck knows his stuff and you need announcers with genuine passion for UGA. Love to listen to the guy on TV or radio. One of my favs.

On the safety thing, this is a low priority. Auburn, South Carolina both proved you can win the SEC without a great pass defense, but you have to focus on stopping the run to win the SEC.

I don’t care if teams try to beat us throwing the ball, that’s the plan, just don’t want anyone to run the ball down our throats again. I’d like to see the defense hold RANKED opponents under 100 yards rushing average.

Think of it this way. His athletic ability was so good that he was chosen to play. Only can get better if he now understands the defense ( where to go and what to do ).

I would like to see the defense do better, but if the dawgs win and gave up 300 yds passing in the process I would still be happy for the win.

Jakar…you make honesty and stupidity strange bedfellows. I have a new found appreciation for the coaches jobs now. Now wonder they get paid so much. Look what they have to put up with. You didn’t know the difference (probably the play calling & terminology) between blitz and cover 4? Super. I’m glad that is all taken care of now.
Please, at least get some duct tape on some mouths to hide the problem. I would rather just not know these things.

Living in Louisiana for five years, it’s weird not having EVERY Georgia baseball game on every UGA radio affiliate. Just goes to show you why LSU’s baseball program is at the level it is and why it’s hit-or-miss at UGA. Kids don’t grow up wanting to play baseball at Georgia like they do in Louisiana.

Last year at this time, before spring practice, he did not know the difference. He learned a little during spring & fall practices. This year the entire D hopefully knows a lot more.
The OL , not the DBs & not the WRs remain my biggest concern. Also, Belue remains 1 of my favorite alltime Dawgs.GATA.

Hamilton says “This year Im into the film room more”

Let me guess the coaches are finally taking their jobs a little more seriously

Once again people wonder why this program has been on a decline and cannot beat FL

Well just read Hamiltons comments above and when you consider the 11 arrests last year 30+ arrests in the last 4 yrs and someone with any sense will tell you

This is a run away program with no sense of urgency to win, nor discipline when it comes to looking at film from these players, tackling as we have seen, running the wrong routes, being out of position, blown coverages, etc.

No wonder why we have to find such things as new uniforms to motivate these kids to play for UGA

And people think we are going somewhere with the DREAM TEAM, give me a break

Yea we might do good this year we might not but this will be replayed again just watch and see

Jakar Hamilton is a perfect example of the dummies that Richt recruits. If he was lost on the field last year, how much chance is there that he could find his way to a classroom?

Can you say M-O-R-O-N.

When our coaches recruit their players wouldn’t finding out how much knowledge the recruit had about football be important. Some high school programs teach their players in every detail of each players responsibilities and why it is important that each player do their job so they will be a cohesive unit . Other coaches just tell their players to” GO LONG” , meaning they run their programs like you would a pick up game from most neighborhood games.
It’s ok if the recruit doesn’t have any knowledge of football if you are going to have them for four years because you have plenty of time to teach them why they do what they are told to do so everything that they do on the field will be a natural reaction. But why would you even recruit someone like Hamilton that only has two years left of eligibility after you talked to him and it was obvious he had never been taught anything as to why he does anything on the field. He has good enough natural talent that he will not be red shirted but the coaches don’t find out how little he knows about football until it is to late to red shirt him. Then he only has one year left to help the program.
The only team that really wins is the pro team that gets him after you teach him why he does what he is suppose to do on the field. That’s the kind of thing that proves Garner should not be recruiting coordinator. I’m sure he would be great for a small school but a big time program like Georgia needs someone better.

With Richt and Grantham coaching, it’s a wonder that any player knows where to be or what to do on the field.

And obviously, few of them know how to behave off the field.

Why is Richt still here?

Buck Belue is fine and will do a good job on any Bulldog programming. John Kincaid is a disaster, and I have never understood why he is on the air in Atlanta, much less allowed to appear on ESPN radio. He is completely unable to consider a different opinion than his own. He shuts down any attempt at conversation before it begins. And on top of that he is a smart-aleck and obnoxious. And those are the positive things I can say about him.

More of “the sky is falling” mentality from the spokesman of the Old Poot Brigade. Hey Bill, here’s your clue: Hamilton was running a 34 defensive scheme for the first time in his life. That’s the same level of experience as a true freshman. Cut him some slack. If he feels like he’s progressing, why are you knocking him? Why do you keep showing how obsolete your way of thinking is becoming. Don’t be the grumpy Old Poot! Would you want someone trashing your son on a football blog?

It’s funny how a lot of these canccerous dawg fans criticize Richt when they haaven’t seen his intensity at a practice. The players compete and get after each other. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Richt is a great coach. It’s cancerous attitudes like these from the fans that can discourage our dawgs. Let support our dawgs no matter what, you fair weathered pathetic fans.

Jakar Hamilton is trying his best to be truthful and apparently some folks just can’t handle the truth! I persoally appreciate his candor, and consider him more of a man for it. I love the University of Georgia…….always have, always will……..but these fringe BULLDOG fans make my ass burn………and that goes for you too Bill King……..you are no different from the AJC writers who love to write doom and gloom stories about DOG football simply when a kid is trying to be honest……and then to cap it off with talk of PR help!……..hell, Bill you if anyone needs PR help, and you are an adult…….and he is a kid trying his best…….and reporting that his game has improved from last year………Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Bill…………Regards, RED
