Timing couldn’t have been worse for UGA’s online meltdown

A lot of folks want to be here come September. (University of Georgia)

A lot of folks want to be here come September. (University of Georgia)

Thirteen FBS teams played in front of more than a million people last season, CNBC reports, and UGA was among them. (The others big-timers on the SEC-dominated list were Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, LSU, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and South Carolina.)

Obviously, a whole lotta folks like watching the Georgia Bulldogs play football. That’s why Thursday’s digital meltdown in Athens has drawn more attention than your average Internet outage.

While nobody can say they don’t do a bang-up job of managing a multi-million dollar sports enterprise at Butts-Mehre since UGA is one of the most profitable college athletic programs around, someone apparently was asleep at the switch when it came to a little matter of renewing the domain registration for the official website, Georgiadogs.com.

Oops. Sometimes it’s the little things that trip you up.

And it just happened to be on what was supposed to be deadline day for Hartman Fund donors to renew their season tickets and order other game tickets for this coming season.

Embarrassing, yeah, but by Auburn standards this offseason pretty much a minor hiccup. The official explanation is that what was supposed to be “an automatic renewal process” handled by UGA’s media rights holder, IMG, somehow didn’t turn out to be automatic. Hopefully UGA won’t have to pay off some cyber squatter to get the domain back.

In the meantime, because of the problems with the website (which as I write this still can’t be accessed), the deadline for Hartman Fund donors (aka Georgia Bulldog Club members) to order 2011 football season tickets has been extended through 5 p.m. Friday. If you wish to place your order online, you can log on to your online account via The Georgia Bulldog Club website, thegeorgiabulldogclub.com (click on “My account” to get to the ticket ordering page). You also can mail your season ticket application with a postmark dated April 1. Or if you’re in the Athens area you can visit either the UGA Athletic Association Ticket Office or the Georgia Bulldog Club offices. The UGA Ticket Office has been temporarily relocated to the Stegeman Coliseum Box Office ticket windows located off Sanford Drive. Parking is available in the South Campus and Carlton Street Decks. The Georgia Bulldog Club offices are located on the fourth floor of Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, where parking is always very limited.

Those glorious fall days in Athens are worth the trouble, though.

PLAYING THROUGH THE PAIN

A number of folks have asked what’s up this spring with Ken Malcome, the redshirt freshman who’s part of the pre-Isaiah Crowell competition at tailback. Dawgs247 has an update on the back, who’s been battling through a lingering groin injury he got late last season while toiling on the scout team.

It’s been frustrating for Malcome because the injury has slowed down his progress. But I like his attitude. “I’ve just got to fight through it,” he said. “I’m trying to show toughness. It’s hard for me to do a lot of stuff out there, but I try. I may mess up. They might get on me. But hey, it’s the next play. I can redeem myself the next play.”

Keep at it, Ken!

I don’t know exactly what the technical issue are, but I know it’s not nearly as simple and somebody forgot to renew the domain name. It’s not like your site crashes at midnight if you don’t do that. You get alerts, and notifications, and still have about a 30 day buffer to to something.

About football tickets: I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

Just asking.

Honestly, those folks in Athens are such a bunch of penny-pinchers that this should not be surprising.

Anyone who is still a UGA fans really needs to take a deeper look at what you are giving your allegiance. Those people are playing 3-Card-Monte and you are the suckers who keep throwing dollar bills at them. As long as you keep doling out money, there is going to continue to be a total lack of accountability and things are going to continue to run like a Mom-and-Pop grocery store.

UGA athletics is one of the few places on earth with a Pabst Blue Ribbon taste and a Dom Perignon budget. If you are a contributor, your money is pretty much being stolen from you. Time to wake up and demand accountability in ALL PROGRAMS and at all levels of administration.

There is absolutely no excuse for the mediocrity that has permeated the entire Athletic department at the University of Georgia. National championships in multiple sports used to be the norm, now the programs are just scrambling to make post-seasons. It’s embarrassing and pathetic and it starts with the Donors demanding greatness.

Strangely, exactly the same thing happened on Tuesday to the firm that I work for. For at least the last several years, we received a notice indicating that the domain name would renew automatically unless we requested non-renewal. This year, no notice of any kind. The fix for us took longer — two days and three different AT&T tech representatives before anyone could figure out what happened, and then the renewal had to be paid for by credit card instead of it appearing on our phone bill as usual.

It is obvious to anyone with a brain that these two losers share the same qualities and characteristics in addition to the FACT that they were both too stupid to get into the University of Georgia as a student.

Some of those characteristics:

1.) Never been with a girl
2.) Never played a sport of any kind(no, nancy boys, chess does not count)
3.) Never attended college
4.) Never had a real job
5.) Never moved from home
6.) Live in a trailer park
7.) Love eating donuts
8.) Without a mirror, neither one has seen his rod in 10 years.
9.) Borrows a computer from the library
10) Combined weight of these two losers is 815 pounds. DING!!

Now that we’re in the off-season, wouldn’t this be the perfect time to take an in-depth look at UGA and have a serious discussion about the problems at UGA and why the arrest rate of players is the highest in the country? it’s common knowledge that UGA is a party school, but have any dawgtard players every actually graduated with a real degree? Jan Kemp exposed the school and the coaches almost three decades ago, but there is no sign that anything has improved; if anything, the arrest rate shows that things are getting more outrageous every year while the clueless Mark Richt has absolutely no control over his players. And then there is the infamous “red panties” incident that will haunt UGA for decades.

UGA has become a major embarrassment to all Georgians, and we want some answers starting now.

Preston

Oh boy, here we go again with more bs trash talk about the arrest rates among the football team. I’m actually proud of the fact that our student athletes don’t get breaks like all the other FBS college towns. They’re held to the same standards as all other citizens in Athens. I guess you idiots believe that the football players in Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Knoxville, gainesville, etc. never drink or do the stupid things that these UGA players get in trouble for. Get real! They get a ride home by the local sheriffs department when they get caught doing wrong instead of paying the penalty like everyone else. At least our guys aren’t stealing dead people’s credit cards and robbing people at convenience stores. It takes something like that to even make the news everywhere else. Please tell me that you don’t believe that UGA is the only school that has college football players that actually drink. I laugh at you fools that love to come on here and actually spew that garbage because you envy our program. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be here in the first place.
