UGA nightmares and dreams: Tricked up uniforms, ‘Mount’ Jenkins

Let's hope this is some some fan's Photoshop fevered nightmare!

Let's hope this is some some fan's Photoshop fevered nightmare!

Ever since Nike started trotting out its controversial Pro Combat uniforms for some of its higher profile college football customers, rumors of a UGA variation have been circulating, usually accompanied by Photoshop faked pictures, most of them pretty nightmarish.

The rumors have taken on new life since the deal for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome with Boise State in September was announced. After all, the Broncos already have worn Pro Combat uniforms, most recently in their bowl game, and a high-profile game like that naturally would attract Nike’s attention.

The most recent chatter about the Dogs going the Pro Combat route, in the blog From Hedges to Hardwood, notes that the rumor surfaced again on what appears to be the Facebook page of recent Georgia signee John Jenkins. As the rumor goes, the deal to play in the Chick-fil-A game supposedly includes a stipulation of wearing Pro Combats.

I understand that the kids playing today like these sort of tricked up uniforms. After all, the players favored those awful black helmets that Mark Richt used to try to motivate his team in Jacksonville a couple of years ago.

But to date, I have not been a fan of most of the Pro Combat outfits I’ve seen. I particularly didn’t like the alligator skin motif design the Florida Gators were given last season, though their recent bowl uniforms were an improvement.

The red uniform offered up by From Hedges to Hardwood isn’t that bad, but the other with the white helmet and black jersey featured on the Jenkins FB page is just plain tacky. Since both are probably fan-made fakes, though, there’s no telling what a Georgia Pro Combat uniform might actually look like.

This alleged Pro Combat uniform floating about the Internet would be tolerable.

This alleged Pro Combat uniform floating about the Internet would be tolerable.

Most UGA fans I’ve heard from don’t like the idea of messing with the uniforms at all. What do you think of going Pro Combat for the Boise game?

Meanwhile, the hype in advance of the arrival in Athens of the aforementioned Mr. Jenkins continues to grow. Dawgs247 quotes his college coach, Steve Campbell of Gulf Coast Community College, comparing Jenkins favorably with a previous player he sent to the SEC, Alabama’s Terrence “Mount” Cody.

John Jenkins (Gulf Coast Community College)

John Jenkins (Gulf Coast Community College)

“I’d say John is a real similar football player,” Campbell said. “I think he’ll be the same kind of impact player at Georgia that T.C. was at Alabama. … Guys like that, you know it immediately. The first time we saw T.C., we knew it. It’s the same thing with big John.”

That’s a lot to live up to, but Jenkins certainly will get a chance to make a big splash early against Boise — whether clad in a Nike Pro Combat or just the traditional red and silver.

Leave the darn uniforms alone for petes sake. UGA has a fine set right now. UGA is not desperate for money or exposure so bowing down to some Japanese company and wearing uniforms designed by Lady Gaga, is not necessary. The uniforms Oregon wore last year looked like they were designed by a visually impaired clothes designer. Next thing you know, Victorias Secret will be responsible for cheer leading uniforms. Ummmm, wait. I might have to give that one some consideration.

I would hope any helmet change might revert to the silver the Dawgs used to wear prior to Dooley. For those of you that aren’t that old, it was silver helmets (plain), red jersey’s with silver numerals, and silver britches! Black shoes were the norm in those days.

If this game prompts a uni change, it would be nice to see those silver (maybe platinum with a pearl like effect). As for the jersey’s and pants, red and silver without much variation unless it is trim.

As one poster put it, let’s just win, and winning big will certainly get attention. GO DAWGS!

I’m as much of a traditionalist as anybody, but what the hell, and as was said above, when you win, it don’t matter what you wear. I mean, one of the all-time great Georgia games, Herschel’s debut in Knoxville, featured us wearing white jerseys with red pants – how many times have we done that since? – and that turned out OK.

Oh yeah, keep the ‘Silver Britches’ to the fullest extent possible, we were never quite the same after Vince changed ‘em to white and before he changed ‘em back.

Let’s just hope that no matter what combination we wear, we kick the crap out of Boise State, then on to the damn ‘banty-roosters’.

I’d be more excited about some cutting-edge playcalling on both sides of the ball, and some creativity from the Redcoat Band (instead of being dull copycats). When’s the last time we had a cool new song that wasn’t swiped from another school, or a new non-idiotic cheer? (the last new cheer I remember is the inane “Goff-ense”, which lasted just a few games before being laughed off the field). I don’t think that running a draw up the middle on 2nd & 10 is very cutting-edge, nor is using play action on 3rd & 9, somehow thinking that it might fool the defense, is very cutting-edge. But, it’s all we can expect, unless Coach Richt lights a fire under Coach Bobo.

I could tolerate some funky uniforms for ONE game in exchange for some creative, insightful playcalling ALL season!! GO DAWGS!!!

Traditional powers don’t change their uniform. You will never see Bama, Penn St., Michigan, et al change their unis. UGA should never change their unis. If they do it at the Dome, its just a further indication that college football and UGA, in particular, have sold out to the highest bidder.

The lil Dawgies couldn’t even beat a crap 3 loss UCF team from C-USA….. How on earth do you think you can compete with Boise? LOL, that’s delusional!

Playing Boise is playing against one of the perennial best teams in the country and you actually think you have a chance? In all seriousness, UGA like VT’s only chance in this game is that Boise travels to the other side of the country in a hostile “home stadium.”

The best thing about football for you UGA fans is the preseason, come halftime, you’ll all be wishing you didn’t take the bait, and wished you’d never gave the go head for the game like all the other SEC teams.

Tail wagging the dawg? Not quite. Nike donates uniforms, helmets and clothing for the coaching staff. In case you haven’t kept up, outfiting a football team is expensive. They also provide 500,000 bucks a year which counts as part of CMR’s salary. Plus, each player gets a ditty bag with athletic gear and shoes donated by Nike. One newbie showed up a practice a few years ago wearing a tee shirt from another company. He was promptly sent back to the dorm to put on a Nike shirt.

go to sportslogos.net and then click forums. you will find there are threads in there where people just mock up sports uniform concepts all day long. I’ve done it a few times. @lakedawg: alabama did actually wear pro combats last year. they were very subtle (a little herringbone pattern up the side of the jersey under the arm and some other small modifications), but they did wear them. also, OSU wore throwbacks for the michigan game a couple of years ago. so, i think the traditional powers do mix it up a bit on occasion and i’m not opposed to it.

however, i take your general point and agree with you: i don’t want to be oregon or boise or something. if we change the uniforms for a big game, the change needs to be subtle or somehow connected to our tradition (silver helmets, for instance, might be kinda cool).

There IS nothing wrong with the black helmets except your memory of the games played. That may have made them nightmarish to you, but it wouldn’t have mattered with any other color. It’s the heart in the uni and another color could have made them play worse. Your negative take on a good-looking uni and helmet doesn’t reflect most of our opinions. As I recall when they first appeared most had great reviews. I still like that helmet and uni and hope we wear it again under different circumstances. It looks great and as I recall over 90% of the student body felt the same way as reflected by the number wearing black t-shirts. And I don’t recall you questioning it back then.

As for PB…your boys from Boise are gonna make this the last game they come East for. They should have lost last season against VT and only won on a fluke. Bet you they ended up glad they didn’t have to play ‘em (VT) at the end of the season. Georgia’s gonna take it to ‘em like they were Hawaii or something and their QB’s Heisman chances are gonna be over before it starts.

Let me give you and the rest of your limp-wristed state a little advice: quit worrying about what you’re wearing on Saturdays and focus on things like tackling, blocking and being better than your opponents. @PB, the funny thing is that You call Boise a perennial powerhouse that UGA does not stand a chance against and then predict a Boise victory by almost the same score as the last time they played UGA. It was 48-13, a UGA dismantling of that “powerhouse.” LOL

@RTR, Richt is a pathetic 3-1 Vs Bama. The 1 win Bama had was against a team with a MASH unit on the field. We had a DT playing left tackle in that game our O-line was so depleted from injuries and 5 of our front 7 was gone for the season with injuries! If You think that is not a problem then explain why Bama got slaughtered by Utah with a backup at LT. I’ll tell You, they could not keep their QB on his feet! Remember, 1 bad season does not mean a team or a coach is done. If that were true Saban should have been done after the LA Monroe debacle and Bear would have won all his championships elsewhere!

All those neat uniforms the Oregon team wore last year, din’t help them out one bit in the mythical national title game now did they? Having said that, if they could somehow help UGA win games, I say let em come out in NCAA approved corsets and thongs, if it makes them play better. One problem that UGA has is the NIKE uniforms are for ELITE PROGRAMS. NIKE will wait until you get to be an ELITE PROGRAM. Now that was funny.

A formal unveiling of the uniform took place at an event on Wednesday morning held by Nike in New York City. Alabama will be one of 10 elite football programs to feature the Nike Pro Combat uniform this season. Alabama is joined by Boise State University, the University of Florida, the University of Miami, The Ohio State University, Oregon State University, the University of Pittsburgh, Texas Christian University (TCU), Virginia Tech University and West Virginia University.

Alabama will wear them against Mississippi State on Nov. 13
- Their design is called “The Next Wave”
- The jersey numbers will be “coded” with a Houndstooth check
- The helmet will have a Houndstooth stripe
- Crimson jersey; white pants with a “truncated” crimson stripe. “A” logo on the pants
- There will also be an American flag on the jersey, as they are wearing it after Veteran’s Day
- Glove fingers will have Discipline, Commitment, Toughness, Effort and Pride written on them

Jenkins was the 10th rated JUCO prospect last year. Who was the number one rated JUCO prospect in the nation? Another Nose Tackle- 6′4 330 lb Jessie Williams who also bench presses almost 600 lbs. Where is the real heir to Mount Cody? He’s at Alabama going through spring drills ready to assume his position as the true heir.

Williams is the real deal. Jenkins is just a poor Georgia man’s version of what Alabama had and has again.
