UGA nightmares and dreams: Tricked up uniforms, ‘Mount’ Jenkins

Let's hope this is some some fan's Photoshop fevered nightmare!

Let's hope this is some some fan's Photoshop fevered nightmare!

Ever since Nike started trotting out its controversial Pro Combat uniforms for some of its higher profile college football customers, rumors of a UGA variation have been circulating, usually accompanied by Photoshop faked pictures, most of them pretty nightmarish.

The rumors have taken on new life since the deal for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome with Boise State in September was announced. After all, the Broncos already have worn Pro Combat uniforms, most recently in their bowl game, and a high-profile game like that naturally would attract Nike’s attention.

The most recent chatter about the Dogs going the Pro Combat route, in the blog From Hedges to Hardwood, notes that the rumor surfaced again on what appears to be the Facebook page of recent Georgia signee John Jenkins. As the rumor goes, the deal to play in the Chick-fil-A game supposedly includes a stipulation of wearing Pro Combats.

I understand that the kids playing today like these sort of tricked up uniforms. After all, the players favored those awful black helmets that Mark Richt used to try to motivate his team in Jacksonville a couple of years ago.

But to date, I have not been a fan of most of the Pro Combat outfits I’ve seen. I particularly didn’t like the alligator skin motif design the Florida Gators were given last season, though their recent bowl uniforms were an improvement.

The red uniform offered up by From Hedges to Hardwood isn’t that bad, but the other with the white helmet and black jersey featured on the Jenkins FB page is just plain tacky. Since both are probably fan-made fakes, though, there’s no telling what a Georgia Pro Combat uniform might actually look like.

This alleged Pro Combat uniform floating about the Internet would be tolerable.

This alleged Pro Combat uniform floating about the Internet would be tolerable.

Most UGA fans I’ve heard from don’t like the idea of messing with the uniforms at all. What do you think of going Pro Combat for the Boise game?

Meanwhile, the hype in advance of the arrival in Athens of the aforementioned Mr. Jenkins continues to grow. Dawgs247 quotes his college coach, Steve Campbell of Gulf Coast Community College, comparing Jenkins favorably with a previous player he sent to the SEC, Alabama’s Terrence “Mount” Cody.

John Jenkins (Gulf Coast Community College)

John Jenkins (Gulf Coast Community College)

“I’d say John is a real similar football player,” Campbell said. “I think he’ll be the same kind of impact player at Georgia that T.C. was at Alabama. … Guys like that, you know it immediately. The first time we saw T.C., we knew it. It’s the same thing with big John.”

That’s a lot to live up to, but Jenkins certainly will get a chance to make a big splash early against Boise — whether clad in a Nike Pro Combat or just the traditional red and silver.

Love the black jerseys but leave the hideous black helmets home.

I’d be okay if the uniform was pro combat style was done up conservatively, where you could see a difference up close as far as fit and material, but from the stands it still looked like the traditional red and black with silver britches.

I think it is great, as long as it doesn’t vary too far from tradition. As far as the black helmets and pants. I was super mad at first. BUT after watchinfg the replay. “Yes I did”. And seeing that the defense really didn’t play that bad. “Cox lost that game himself”. I re-evaluated the uniform. It really wasn’t that bad.

Personally, I think TCU had/has the best Pro-Combat uniform. That silver lizard skin helmet with the matching pants was winner by Nike.

New uniforms don’t bother me, I think it’s fun to change it up sometimes. All that matters is the win. My all time favorite uniform change was the GA/Auburn 2007 game, so much fun!! GO DAWGS!!

I too like the black jerseys maybe one game per season, but leave the Grambling helmets under the cover in Butts Mehr.

Bill didn’t write this article about winning, he wrote it about whether or not we like the new uniforms. I say no way! Let’s stick to the red, black, and silver brithches, and come out with the black jerseys every once in a while.

I would prefer that Nike NOT mess with the traditional UGA uniforms. Most of the ones I’ve seen are super tacky so would rather not see the Dawgs in any of them. Hope AD will discourage anything other than UGA’s regular unis.

In comparison to Clemson, Oregon, and others, the white, black, and silver combo looks pretty good. It least it’s not orange or yellow.

Modified uniforms have super resale and collectible value. They are really nice to display in your office. I will buy a bunch of them if used in games, win or lose.

Nothing wrong with a change occasionally. Like the Falcons do with the throwback ones, it makes it more interesting, plus the players seem to enjoy it.

If NIKE gives uniforms for free plus some more to the UGAA(athletic), I do not think the AD can resist.

Last season there were no changes done in the uniforms and was the worse season of Richt’s tenure. Just saying.

Uniforms even without signature or name but can be identified to a particular game or season will be much more collectible. Just think of the 2007 uniforms with the 75th SEC logo. It is difficult to identify uniforms otherwise.

Uniforms are for collections and frames. It should not affect performance in games. Oregon’s uniforms may be tacky but they sure reached the BCS Championship game.

Go for the Pro Combat look (White helmet, black jersey). For me, the traditional uniforms are red jerseys, silver helmets and silver pants.

i understand and respect tradition but we are in 2011… We have to acknowledge that the kids want to play in different uniforms. Every one is doing it. Why should UGA be any different. This is not only a motivational tool but it also helps in recruiting if you agree with it or not. i think we need to “trick out” the uniforms to boost moral and excitment from last year terrible year.

To many of you’ll are stuck in your OLD ways…. it’s a new day. You have to adapt to today’s world or get left behind. Agree, disagree or in different, the kids to like a change in uniforms…. We needa change. Weather that is once a year or twice a year… it needs to be done.

you don’t win or loose with your uniform…but what you do is boost moral with your players and fan… You also bring excitment along with it. Believe it or not, uniforms will NOT be the decideing factor on a kid signing with UGA but I bet it sure helps!!!

I wonder what Tennessee’s Nike uniforms would look like. First, the school would have to decide on exactly what color “Orange” is.

“Auburn” was my first thought when I saw the black uni, especially the helmet.

The red one’s okay (not too distant from the usual red shirts and silver britches).

I’ve always thought, though, that red numbers on black shirts and black numbers on red ones would look cool. Probably violates some NCAA recruiting rules, though.

@lakedawg: alabama did actually wear pro combats last year. they were very subtle (a little herringbone pattern up the side of the jersey under the arm and some other small modifications), but they did wear them. also, OSU wore throwbacks for the michigan game a couple of years ago. so, i think the traditional powers do mix it up a bit on occasion and i’m not opposed to it.

however, i take your general point and agree with you: i don’t want to be oregon or boise or something. if we change the uniforms for a big game, the change needs to be subtle or somehow connected to our tradition (silver helmets, for instance, might be kinda cool).

i’m more excited about the dang game than anything else! whatever ssigator and the other trolls have to say, it’s great to be a georgia bulldog!

Our “traditional” uniforms of today are a product of change. Every coach we have had has altered the standard in some way or another. I believe they all have rolled out something special occationally too.

Alatamaha Dawg – your 12:21 post is AWESOME!!!!

My over 40 year old behind loved the black jerseys as well – even moreso after beating Auburn…. which seems a never easy thing to do and always – always is an unpredicatbable game.

Hey – whatever on the uniforms – what is tradition is the Georgia G – started by Vince Dooley after approvals by GB Packers. Other than that – keep the color scheme within our 4 colors – Red, Black, Silver/Gray and White – get creative – have some fun …… and let’s win this game!!!!!!

Go Dawgs!!!!
