Orson Charles has the right idea about how to approach this season. (The State)
A lot of what you hear from college football players in the offseason should be taken with a grain of salt.
It’s part of the team-building process to talk it up, so you get a lot of “we’re working harder than ever” chatter. We heard last year about how much harder the players were working and how much faster they were. Then came the 6-7 season and the conditioning coach and his supposedly infamous mat drills were out, and now we’re being told how much harder the players are working and how it’s paying off with them being much bigger and faster.
Whether that’s true or just more talk, we’ll see this fall.
Also, if the previous season wasn’t all it was expected to be, you tend to hear comments about how much better it is now in terms of leadership and attitude. The past couple of years we’ve heard a lot of that kind of talk from Georgia football players, and we’re hearing more of it this year. There wasn’t any leadership in the locker room. There was finger-pointing going on after losses.
The difference is, this time the picture they’re painting of the previous year’s attitude and morale problems is much more extreme than we’ve heard before, with several instances of players who are no longer on the team being referred to as “cancers” that had to be removed in order for the team to get healthy again.
Whether that’s a bit of scapegoating or the morale problems really were exacerbated last year by some dissenters, this seems to be more than just team-building among the current players. Christian Robinson has been outspoken about last year’s morale problems, as has Ben Jones. And Tavarres King told the Macon Telegraph there were “absolutely” more chemistry problems with last year’s team than than those of us outside the program knew about.
Looking back, that’s not surprising, especially considering the early-season losing streak. In the midst of that four-game skid, Mark Richt was asked about how his team was handling the adversity, and he said, “All I would say is everybody showed up to work and we worked. That’s all we can ask right now. We just have to keep grinding right now.”
As the season wore on, we got more comments from him about the players needing to show up for work like a man and do their job.
Kris Durham said before the Tennessee game that the team was “trying to stay positive, trying to have a positive mentality, and get back to having fun. It’s never fun when you lose.”
Now it appears the problems with that team were more severe than simply not “finishing the drill.” It wasn’t all attitude, of course. There definitely were talent problems at certain positions. But perhaps members of the team who were unhappy over a lack of playing time or the way they’d been treated by coaches dragged the team down even more.
And this year? Well, it’s all going to be different, isn’t it? At least that’s what we’re being told.
I’m not sure all this pointing of the finger at departed players is any more productive than the “griping and moaning,” as Richt calls it, that apparently went down last year.
I think maybe a better mind-set is how Orson Charles appears to be approaching the coming season. As he told Dawgs247, “We just need to go back to just having fun. When I was coming here, I was watching when they played Hawaii. All them boys were jumping up and down and having fun. I’m like, ‘Why can’t we have that now? Why can’t we do that now?’ There’s nothing stopping us. We’re stopping ourselves. So I think that’s the No. 1 thing that we need to go out there and remember. We’ve been playing this game for a long time, and growing up, we’ve been having fun. So let’s just have fun doing it now.”
It is a game, after all.

We hear the same crap every year. Did you know that UGA had NO nutrition plan before this year? Players ate and did what they wanted? There has been absolutely NO leadership on this team for years. You can see the program has fallen hard by watching the bowl game. No fire, no intensity…kicking a field goal??? Coaches did not have faith in the players and players did not have faith in the coaches.
One way or another it will get fixed this year. Either Richt wins and that includes beating Florida or he is gone baby, gone.

Since “FUN” seems to be the word of the day, I agree with your post. Seems to me it would have been a lot more FUN to go for it on a 4th & inces, inside the five no less, with a 6 & 6 record in a “who really cares bowl” than kick a field goal. Coach, I love ya’, but bring back the fun. Let’s do the unexpected as well as the obvious. CMB, are you reading this? Orson, the reason that team was having fun is because they were winning. Why don’t you focus on that? The reason they were winning is because they put in the blood, sweat, and tears necessary to get there. Got it? Don’t put the cart before the horse big guy. Nobody is going to have fun if we’re 4th in the East and get our azzes kicked by Florida again.

We are really doing great this Spring. [Insert new coach] has really gotten us working together as a team. We have great senior leaders this year. Last year we really didn’t have leadership but this year we do.
This is the hardest we have worked during the offseason. No one missed any voluntary workouts. We are really going to jell this year.

I’m not sure what the definition of “put it behind them” is exactly, but this is the second time this has been covered in this forum in about a week. I don’t think Robinson is out there calling it to anyone attention at this point, is he?
Not to mention it was a responce to a line of questioning from a reporter looking for just such an angle. All of which is fair, nobody puts words in his mouth. Just saying, it’s not like anyone inside the program sought out this story in an effort to make excuses. Obviously at 6-7 there weren’t high fives all around. It’s pretty amazing there wasn’t full blown fist fights in the locker room.

Fran “spoke out”? He complained about a poor season record (well Duh!) on a radio interview that was choreographed for just that, simply to get publicity. He said nothing of value, offered no solutions, and was just purely factually incorrect on a couple of points. Not to mentioned he picked about the worst possible timing possible to do so, unless his objective was actually to hurt the recruiting effort he was supposed to be so (never mind his complete absence for the past 20 yrs) concerned about.

Beat Florida, Auburn & Tennessee all in the same year; 9) Receivers will learn to catch the ball; 9) Tackle, Tackle, Tackle. If all these fail stop playing football. UGA football is teetering on the edge of becoming an SEC 3rd tier team

The direction of the program. Do you actually believe that his concern was not founded in the 6-7 record? Had they kicked a few more FG, do you really think he is going out to be critical of the “direction” had they won a few more games? Or that anyone would have even asked him about it? OBVIOUSLY he was complaining about 6-7.
But specifically he was saying “player from Georgia used to want to go to Georgia, and we just don’t get them any more”. Really? That’s the true concern about direction? First of all, wouldn’t it have been smart to actually check with what was going on relative to that claim. Especially if you are going to say that 2 weeks before signing day of the best group of Georgia players in years?? I would have thought that wise. Secondly do you recon he believes UGA to have 75 new scholarships to give every year? The year before was the only year that Richt had not signed a good group of Georgia players.
The of cource was the seemingless incoherant point that Richt was a man of religion. I guess because most men aren’t? Or football coaches can’t be? That’s not even making a poiint, much less a valid “direction” concern. “I know he like to go on Mission trips”? what! Foprgetting the Fact that he hadn’t been on one since the summer of 08′ (frankly I find it a bit more than conincidental that the record started going down when he GAVE UP going on those, but whatever), what on earth does that have anything to so with being a successful football coach anyway?

that being said, i wish richt would ban all players from interviews at least until after the first game. quit making excuses about the past and fix the future. control what you can control which is 2011 and beyond not 2010.
i’m in the camp of who anointed robinson as the leader of the defense…how about tyson, abry jones or boykin….people who’s play actually leads the team. robinson is not impressive on the field. i hope he does not turn into one of the players the coaches leave on the field and waste a more talented player behind them on the bench.

Alt, what @ 2:04? Half a brain or better could figure it out. Bubba, I’ve never been a Richt Fan, I don’t like his offensive philosophy, finesse. It doesn’t win in the SEC, without a physical game you just don’t last four quarters against good physical teams. If Richt wins, I still won’t be fan of the style game he plays. I guess I just can’t be pleased huh? And he just doesn’t seem to “learn” or “grow” from his experience….

Frannie Mae- Tarkington is a moron….anyone that would come out like he did is as classless as Fairley at Auburn. I would rate him right along side of him. It’s fine to have an opinion- but the way he did it was spineless at best. This from someone that has chosen not to be involved with UGA. Hopefully he will crawl back under his rock and shut up

When you pour tons of resources into one department and it still underachieves, you’ve got the wrong manager. I don’t care what he’s done previously, just the recent three years…past time to fire Richt. He was once an above-average coach, but let money destroy his passion. With our 2011 schedule, anything less than 10 wins and an SEC East championship is grounds for dismissal. Just the opinion of a UGA grad and 42 year season ticket holder.

Absolutely Fran has the right to say whatever. I assume you are assighning him a higher degree of “right” because he was a former star player? If that is true I also think he would have a greater responsibility along with that, to be insightful or helpful, and aware of such thing as context and timing. Or facts. I didn’t find him to be any of that. So yes, his right to be right to be reactionary is exactly the same as the next guy on the street.

The bottom line is we get whipped up front on both sides of the ball last season. We can’t let that happen this season. Hopefully our new O-line coach can show these boys the right way to do things and motivate them to block and hit everything in another color. Whether we like it or not, and no matter how pretty or “diva” these skill players look prancing down the sidelines for a touchdown, games are won and lost in the trenches.

It starts with discipline at the top and Georgia has not had it the past couple of years with the loose and disorganized off seasons. I read where Duron Carter former 5 star recruit who originally signed with Ohio State and left due to acadmics attended JUCO and is now visiting Alabama with father former NFL receiver Chris Carter. Chris said they were looking for 365 days of structure, discipline and teaching and that is what you get with Nick Saban and his staff. Inside sources have the 6′5 205 lb receiver signing with Alabama.
Richt needs to put a muzzle on any player speaking to the media and get these type of comments which fuel more question squashed.

When you recruit, you have to recruit leaders and winners. If not, you will have a lot of “me” players. I’ve sent several guys to schools as 3-5 star players who were “me” guys. And, sadly, most did not amount to much at the next level. Players with talent AND character tend to do well in college and beyond. Unfortunately, I have seen UGA get away from this over the last 5 years or so. If you tell them that a kid doesn’t work hard or is lazy, they think that they correct that problem at the next level. 9 times out of 10 they, or anyone for that matter, cannot solve this.

Coach,
It’s not just UGA that is this way. I’ve seen it too with this staff, but it’s not just UGA that is like this. Several programs in the south don’t look at character first. I coached against a 5 star kid in 2009. He may be the best I’ve ever coached against. My buddy coached him and said he was the WORST kid to EVER come through his program. Georgia was hard after him. He turned them down at the last minute for another SEC school. Point being, several schools recruit talent first, talent second, and character third, if at all. Many of these kids don’t live up to their potential at the next level.

Fran listed 3 main points as the rationale for his determining georgia was in trouble. I listed 2. The other one was his not understanding the comments having to do with administrative duties. I truly believe when Richt’s wife was diagnosed w/ cancer, things changed for him at that point. I believe in this man. If you are a UGA fan you should too. He is making the correct adjustments to right this ship. We are getting the right players fit for the 3-4. We now have a seasoned QB, and we are getting bigger and stronger. I hope Richt sees that this offense is too predictable. If Bobo becomes less predictable, we will execute better and everything will fall into place. We will be a better team and Richt won’t let us down next year!

Atltamaha… I think in the whole scheme of things Fran was upset with Richt and really to what Richt was quoted about his duties as a football coach. Thus it reflects on the direction of the program even prior to last season because it has been ongoing for quite sometime. Recruiting, coaching and probably the internal discipline problems all included which led to Frans rant. You find Frans assessment of the UGA program inaccurate and I find them spot on. So go ahead and tell Fran its not nice to criticize his university even 2 weeks prior on national signing day. I’m sure as successful as Fran is he will listen take your advise.

The “dream team” recruits will in reality turn out like most of the other highly rated classes. A couple will be standouts, several will wash out, and for the most part they will fill positions lost to graduation.
To me, the real shame is that the “Head Coach” has drawn a “premium” salary and benefit package while not doing his job. Further, he hasn’t “taken responsibility” for the digression of the program.
As a public figure, Fran was within his rights to give his opinion. It was a bit shocking the way he weighed in as he hasn’t been involved in the program to any large degree that I recollect. He should have weighed his comments and used a little more restraint IMO.

And most of you people call yourself UGA fans. A sorry bunch so far on this blog. King did succeed though, in that he got a lot of malcontents to spew their venom once again.
If you are a loyal and true fan, you might have criticism but you can do it in such a way as to be constructive and in remarks that indicate you made it past third grade. As for Fran Tarkenton; If you can not figure out his timing had all to do with launching his new radio talk show. I am old enough to remember his college and pro playing days. Just ask Minn’s former coach, Bud Grant, if Fran was not a true box of rocks. His success was largely based on his ability to scramble. He scrambled so much because he could not grasp the concept of checking off to primary receivers, and go to the second and third looks. Minn. lost every superbowl he played in and believe me, they had one heck of a team. He is in no postion to question any team or coach about thier abilities.
If you are a true fan, as some of you claim to be, you should realize the purpose of these blogs and realize that the more negative junk you post, disparging UGA, the more ammunition you give the people that come on here, to do nothing but start an arguement. You want support for your comments, go to Florida, Auburn, Alabama or Tenn. blogs and they will agree with you more than true UGA fans do. I will not even bother to tell you to go to Tech. boards since the AJC provides them for the school.
If you are a true UGA fan, now is the time to show your support. I do not think for one minute that CMR and his staff don’t know what has to be fixed this year and not for one minute do I think they will fail to fix it. 2011 will be day and night difference from 2010 in my opinion. I choose to be positive. Hopefully, some of the nathsayers on this blog will also get behind the program.

So I am saying if he offers a criteria which was factually wrong, along with some incoherent reference to religion, and a dislike about how somebody was quoted in a soundbite about a topic that he clearly could not have had any knowledge about, I just don’t find that a particularly compelling argument. He exhibited absolutely no more expertise or insight than the guy on the street. I’ve never debated his right to state purely subjective, emotional, opinion. He doesn’t owe anyone a visit, he doesn’t have to consult with anyone. He never claimed to know for sure any of that stuff. All he ever said was, this is my opinion. I’d like to hear from some AU fans about this, and specifically, why is that the ones that we keep hearing from seem to be ex AUs…dating back a few years to Mr. Ramsey? Sure there’s plenty of ‘hundred-dollar handshakes’ going on in college football, but it appears that Auburn has made it an ‘art form’…I mean, bookbags? Dirty Dawg, and I know you’re not pointing a finger at me specifically, but I’m very skeptical about the direction of our program, I’ve been involved with UGA football in one way or the other for over 40 years, so I don’t consider myself a “fair weather fan”. I’ve always been eternally optimistic about upcoming football seasons, but now count myself among those that just can’t find myself overly excited about our Mark Richt led football team. Is it because I’m becoming senile, negative, older, or is it because of what I’ve seen first hand, the degeneration of our program on all levels over the last five years. I admit some of it is just a sign of the times, the changing of the atheletes, character of people, the changing of the very culture of the country we live in. I may become a “fair weather fan” if things don’t change. It’s hard to imagine fall Saturdays without following the Dawgs, but they now have to give me a better reason to devote a day to than they have the last few years. We haven’t won a big game since I can remember…………We haven’t had a field leader since Greene and Pollack, some would say Shockley, maybe………..CMR is accountable for this, at least to me.

I thought the most interesting thing about Fran’s rant was that NFL scouts know that our players aren’t strengthed and conditioned for lack of a better phraze. yet, once again, our guys seemed like they did just fine and some were very impressive with bench, 40’s, agility at the NFL combine.
Now, the offensive line peformed very poorly this year. I think everyone would agree on that. Does anyone know why that happened? Was it the S&C program? Weren’t these the same 6-8 OL that played pretty well as Freshman three years ago? Shocking that they did worse their Junior and Senior years than they did as Freshman and Redshirt Freshman. We didn’t have a lot of injuries this year at OL compared to year’s past. We did have some injuries in August that caused this unit not to be able to practice together prior to game 1… but after 2-3 games, that should have worked itself out. We might have a played A LITTLE better in the 2nd half of the season, but we can all agree the OL was a big disapointment last year.
That is the one mystery I can’t figure out. Why didn’t the OL play better last year?

That is the 4 million dollar question I-Dog. He better have figured it out now. Although I will point out that I didn’t really think (and said often) they played all that well in 2008, or 2009. We could NEVER pick up short yardage when needed, not even with Knowshon back there. I really think some of why they looked so bad last year was that the playcalling around a freshman QB, and just never having a RB step up just put a lot of pressure on them, or put them more in the spotlight at times. Not so sure they were all that much worse particularly.
I know what(who) we were doing then, and we seem to be doing it different this year. I guess we will see. I personally think we have better players starting to come on. If they are in fact bigger and stronger, that has to help….they only needed a few more plays late in the game to have squeaked by in a few more ugly W’s last year.

You don’t worry about chemistry if you can win some football games.
Please beat somebody besides Vanderbilt this year guys, seriously, this is getting embarrasing.

Bingo….
Alt @ 4:08: “We could NEVER pick up short yardage when needed, not even with Knowshon back there. I really think some of why they looked so bad last year was that the playcalling around a freshman QB, and just never having a RB step up just put a lot of pressure on them, or put them more in the spotlight at times.”
The O Line should have been our strength with a Freshman QB. I don’t think they were ever challenged as such and put in the spotlight. “If this team fails, it’s your fault guys”, that’s a lot of pressure but call it like it is. Good O line equals a good running game, good ball control, takes pressure of the young, new defense. The O line was the downfall of last year’s team IMO.

i think robinson and the rest of the dawgs HAVE put that talk behind them; the “cancer” quote is what, two or three weeks old? everything i read is about NEXT year. there are monitors in the weight room with a ticker counting down to the boise game.
bill king and the AJC are the only ones still reporting cancer talk. y’all are the ones who need to move on. there are plenty of interesting position battles going on right now (radi nabulsi was talking about them on 960 theref and dawgdial); why don’t you talk about those instead of this “cancer” retread?

Just what I need to hear. Maybe this explains why we had so many players who individually had great stats but as a team did poorly. I hope that when I drive the 285 miles each way, pay for the tickets (after market higher ones) sit in the traffic for hours to support my school, some of there brats will appreciate what they have going for them. It is not a co-incidence that the demand for tickets is down almost to the point that there may soon be available single game tickets sold. This hasn’t happened in quite a few years. The alumni will be voting on this team with their pocketbooks.

Mobile Dawg…since you’ve been ‘involved in one way or another’ – whatever that means – with UGA football for all those years, tell me, just who do you feel did earn your respect as a leader? There were only four coaches during that period – so I assume you mean Vince? Certainly not Ray…Jim maybe…but not Mark. What was it about Vince, or whoever, that you felt was worthy of your support, and correspondingly, what is it about Mark that doesn’t? Is it his piety? His strong sense of family? What? Or is it that you don’t like their losing more games than you’d like ‘em to? I mean it wasn’t as if Vince was a world beater and if it hadn’t been for that running back from Wrightsville, oh yeah, and a Lindsay Scott, Lindsay Scott, Lindsay Scott…he’d be about in the same boat as Mark.
Let’s just say that the man we’ve got now is more than capable and is on the verge of having a great run of success that will make even you proud…oh yeah, we’ll save a spot on the band wagon for you and if need be we’ll build some more to add to the parade…maybe then you won’t have to eat any crap from the AUs and UAs over there.

Bill-the only thing worse than the continued talk about the “cancers” is your lame effort to get a story out of it. I thought you were supposed to a ” fan” but it seems as of late all that you want to do is to wallow in negativity. I know being a fan sometimes means being critical, but as of late you are doing nothing to help the cause.

Well, we agree on the line being an issue last year. I think there was more to it than they simply were not told to do better or challanged. They knew thier job. If you and I know it, they know it. The teams fortune resting on them was certainly plastered in every publication and discussion coming into to the year. I feel like they were properly aware of being on the spot. The staff just didn’t get them to do it. I think it’s more of a physical answer, than a mental or emotional answer. And there were some other issues running the ball that weren’t just about the line.
The running game has been much better at times. The O-line has been better at times (talking about in Richt era) What I do in my business when some aspect of it is not doing as well as it has in the past, or doing better than ever, basically when something has changed, is to try to identify what are the constants and what are the variables. Richt needs to figure out who/what those are.

Dirty, I was referring to players as being “team leaders”. As Alt said above an analysis of everything is what we need at this point. I do believe a void of leadership from CMR has allowed us to digress overall to where we are. As far as jumping back on the wagon, I will support CMR when he has demonstrated he deserves to remain as our Head Coach….

Naw, I’m sure Fran wasn’t suggesting we have to sign every single kid from Atlanta, or even have. Nor do I think he was suggesting that we signed anyone because he made Chip Towers #21 honorable mention Ga prospect. I’m sure Fran would say good for him, he wanted to play DE and UGA and most others saw him as a OL. I’m Fran would be much more interested in that TE from South Georgia that we really needed.

Ga fans probably need to let go of that distant Hawaii win. Bill may not tell you dawgs what you want to hear, but he tells it like it is. Maybe the only guy that does. I would love to see Ga lose, but honestly all you need to do is change your head coach. Just find you some guy that wants to beat Florida. Why don’t you guys hold CMR accountable for Florida?

Every year it’s the same old BS. We’re gonna do this, we’re gonna do that. What happens? Four loses, five loses, six loses. Supposedly with plenty of material to work with. Will things be different this year? Who knows? But remember the old saw: The fish rots from the head. Paying attention, McGarity?

Richt went 0-6 against ranked teams last season, 2-9 last 2 seasons, so I’ll guess Richt goes maybe 1-4 against the 5 ranked teams, and maybe 6-1 against the unranked teams, to finish 7-5.

Darla,
you can subscribe for free for the UGA daily student newspaper called, “Red and Black”. It will help you from jumping to conclusions without any factual evidence. Supositions are what lawyers make in court to plant doubts in the minds of juries. They do have some evidence to back it up though, even if it has to be twisted to fit the point they hope to make.

Tech Buzz,
I see where GT had a real great defense on the field last year also. The coach did not have a single person he recruited last year to introduce a new defense and did not have the man, to stop up the middle. At least UGA fans can pay for their coaches with money generated by their sports programs. Tax money doesn’t pay for the coaches.
