Brandon Boykin returning punts sounds like a good idea

Adding Brandon Boykin to the Dogs' punt return corps is an enticing prospect. (Associated Press)

Adding Brandon Boykin to the Dogs' punt return corps is an enticing prospect. (Associated Press)

Some Saturday morning musings …

I LIKE THIS: Brandon Boykin, who has returned four kickoffs for touchdowns so far in his career, was among the Dogs fielding punts in practice Thursday, along with Branden Smith (last year’s main punt returner), Tavarres King and Carlton Thomas. Said Boykin of the prospect of adding punt returns to his duties as cornerback and kickoff returner: “If they want me to return punts, I’m definitely up for it. Anytime I can get the ball in my hands, you know I’m going to say yes to it.” Hey, might as well go for broke with ace returner Logan Gray gone!

I ALSO LIKE THIS: A lot of folks did double-takes at published shots of Kwame Geathers at practice this week and how huge and yet in great shape he looks. Geathers says he’s up to 344 pounds now (from a listed 325 before the bowl game) but maintains the added weight is muscle. “My body fat went down,” Geathers said. Of Joe Tereshinski’s new strength and conditioning program, the big boy says, “I buy into it.” I know everyone’s excited about big John Jenkins arriving at nose guard this fall, but if Geathers can provide a strong backup to him at that position and start commanding some double-team blocks, the Dogs’ defense is going to be in much better shape in the middle.

NOT THRILLED WITH THIS: Dawgs247 reports that after three practices, Mark Richt’s assessment of the battle between Jakar Hamilton and Shawn Williams to replace Alec Ogletree at safety isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement of either: “They’ve still got a ways to go.” And despite this being the second year for them in the scheme, Boykin hints that neither the erstwhile “Hitman” nor Williams have a complete grasp of Todd Grantham’s defense. The problem, he says, is “maybe not knowing 100 percent what to do.” You’ve got to wonder when the light bulb finally is going to come on for one of those guys.

BYE BYE: ESPN’s Chris Low looked at the SEC schedule released this week and noted that Alabama still faces the most SEC opponents coming off a bye week, though it’s three this year, down from six last year. But of more interest to us is that Georgia is the only other team in the league that plays more than one SEC team coming off a bye. Florida and Auburn are both off the week before playing the Dogs this coming season. The good news, in that regard, is that both Georgia and Florida are off the week before the clash in Jacksonville, so there should be no advantage given there. Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee all face just one team coming off a bye and Arkansas, Auburn, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt don’t play any SEC games this season where the other team is coming off a bye.

The biggest change that CMR needs to make is to stop recruiting the low-class illiterates and thugs who he seems to think will win for him and keep his oversized paychecks coming in. People like Marcus Dowtin, A.J. Green, Washaun Ealey, Caleb King, and others too numerous to mention are not team players, they’re thug wannabes who are much closer to a gang than a team.

It’s sickening to see felons and goons like these representing the state’s flagship university.

Alright………..the last thing we need is problems at safety. I wish we would have kept Ogletree at safety because I want receivers to think twice about going across the field. Hamilton cannot tackle for his life I’m sorry. I can still see him bouncing off Lattimore like a racket-ball like he did last year. Who knows, maybe Corey Moore will be able to grasp the concept

We will be fine at safety. There is good competition there. Ogletree has grown out of the safety body and is a better fit at OLB. He was getting smoked and getting beat deep back there last year. Once these guys get some reps in the light will click on sooner or later. So pumped for next year!

Stop some of the plays at the line of scrimmage, or in the backfield, and the safeties will be just fine. Put the pressure on the QB and the safeties will have time to react. They will learn the defense or coach G. will find somebody who can play the position and will learn, what it takes. I hope the coaches take a “No Prisoners”, attitude this year with returning players. If you aren’t smart enough to catch on to the responsibilities of your position, you do not need to be playing.

Telstar,
Felons and goons never win. Just ask Chizik. Clearly there us a correlation between not having guys on your team who committ armed robbery and winning championships. So obviously your analysis is spot on. You must be in Mensa or something. And Downtins long list of legal transgressions need to be stated publicly but I’m not sure where to start well, because there aren’t any. As far as Caleb some might say that failing to pay a traffic ticket is relatively minor, but to us, because of our superior intellect, recognize it as a felonious and goonish. As far as AJ selling his own jersey for money? That would be a capital offense in our world because we see the harm to society caused thereby. But AJ had such little regard for his victims. With respect to gang activity most gangs involve themselves in petty crimes like drug dealing, robbery, murder, but I’m sure that they only stick to that because they aren’t tough enough to join the ranks of those who commit truly dangerous offenses of failing to timely arrive for a discipline run. Most street gang members couldn’t or wouldn’t because of their moral compass involve themselves in such activity. Frankly, Telstar I think you understate the case. BTW : have you considered the benefits of a vasectomy before it’s too late.

They’re talking about moving commings to safety, but I think that’s a lasteesort bc he’s got the best ball skills. Williams and Hamilton still have plenty of time to get better before the season starts. But yeah bill, you’re right to be worried. Thrilled to see kwame getting in shape and figuring out what to do; if he plays up to potential, our defensive front goes from being a liability to a strength.

Jenkins is not going to be able to play every single down from the get go, or ever really. Not to mention we are just guessing /hoping he is the answer. NEED another big body to step up. I can’t help but think we are in better shape this second year across the board.
Even at safety, whoever is not 100% getting it now, they were all about 70% getting it last year including Ogletree. I don’t see that backing up this year. Seems like “replacing him” isn’t really an accurate description of what is going on at that position.

I just want a ballhawking safety back there. I want someone that when that ball is up in the air, they have that “it’s mine” mentality. Don’t look for the big hit all the time but look to snag that ball away and give it back to your offense for the opportunity to put up more points. Now if the receiver does happen to come up with the ball, don’t try to make an ESPN highlight hit, just wrap him up and take him down. Too many times last season I saw too many players trying to make that highlight hitstick, instead of wrapping up the ball-carrier and it cost us. FUNDAMENTALS is what wins championships. Blocking, and tackling, and learning how to hold on to the football.

1. A drunken, whoring athletic director with red panties in his lap.

2. Twelve players arrested. And 41% of UGA football players are arrested during their time at UGA.

3. A player suspended for violating NCAA rules.

4. Winning the Fulmer Cup for the most players arrested.

5. Winning the title of #1 party school (i.e., the most drunken student body in the USA).

6. A sleazy assistant coach who razzes opposing players, unethical coaching conduct in violation of NCAA rules.

7. A super sleazy head coach who thinks he’s a saint, but recruits thug wannabes, gangbangers, and illiterate morons.

8. A 6-7 record despite having a team full of 4- and 5-star recruits.

This is his THIRD YEAR in the offense. If he doesn’t know it by now he never will. Guess he will be officially tabbed a bust if he can’t get it done this year.

But have no fear, Bennett is underrated in a HUGE way plus, Conley and Mitchell are the real deal. Mitchell would have been a 5 star if he had been a little taller and faster, otherwise he has all the tools to be another AJ.

To start with, I’m just glad that logan gray can’t return, fair catch, punts next season. Someone in the safety position needs to step up, I’m not a football expert but I thought the 3-4, 4-3 stuff mainly was a change in dline and linebackers, not so much in db’s. I could be wrong though. Hopefully a freshman can step it up if those two can’t.

On another note, what has happened with branden smith? From what I’ve read he may still not be a starting cb, is he not progressing at all? He is an amazing talent, if he’s just going to be a nickle or dime corner can we use him more on offense then with the lack of receiver experience?

Speaking of “light bulbs”, Have you noted that Caleb King is 23, Washaun Ealey will be 22 in June and Richard Samuel is 20 years old. What a waste of talent or lack of coaching from the staff concerning Samuel. We would have really been in trouble if he had not played tb his sophomore year. Why waste a kid like this his freshman year on a few plays and a few ko returns. Basically he has been a big team player and a gread dawg. Hopefully he will get to start this year as a LB. He and Ogletree need to be on the field at the same time. You cannot waste an athlete of his class to play malcontent thugs like King, or Ealey.

Actually a while back a knowledgeable (at least he seemed that way) blogger was talking about Smith. He said the coaches were trying to officially move him over to offense because he just didn’t have the hips at CB and was actually a big liability for us on defense. I don’t know if it’s completely true but it sounded good.

“I agree with some of the above. Richard Sammuel needs to be on the field”

Does he? I used to think the same thing, but honestly that was hopeful thinking. Has anyone here actually seen Richard play MLB yet? When Granthem moved Olgletree over to MLB the first thing I thought of was Richard must not be the man there after all. Not sure I agree with you in regard to Thomas Davis, he was terrible in pass coverage. Great against the run and a really good player but not perfect by any means. I’d say the best safety play we’ve had since Richt has been here was in 2005 by Greg Blue. He did it all…

I’m not saying Davis wasn’t a good player or even that he might not be better than Blue but you are wrong here. Blue in 2005 was amazing, there were times he carried the defense (Tennessee game for one), and this was with a much weaker supporting cast than in 2004. The 2 games we lost in 2004, Davis was used and abused in the passing game.

Check your facts RxDawg.

Coaches have told me they fully expect one or both of the highly touted freshman to come in and compete for a starting role at safety. Ogletree moving back is NOT and option. The kid has gained about 20lbs of muscle and looks like an NFL linebacker at the moment. Much bigger and faster than Thomas Davis.

In regards to Samuels…. there is NO depth at inside lb, so Samuels will play a ton. He may not start every game but will have to play.

Is there any chance that some of the Dream Team freshmen will enroll prior to this fall, since high school ends in late May/early June? It would definitely give them a better chance of competing for playing time.

Telstar Bloog, you lose credibility when you throw A.J. in that group. So either you are a closet racist who only seems to have problems with our black players, or you mistakenly put his name in that group. He’s a good kid regardless of his intelligent score.

I am actually excited about our football and men’s basketball programs.

However, I am taking this time to suggest to our AD, it is time for a change on the Women’s Basketball Team. I have never seen a more lopsided game since the Harlem Globetrotter’s in 1975. I dont care if we have been to more tournaments than anyone beside you know who, or 19 sweet sixteen appearances, who cares or 5 Final Fours, really since when, and with the talent we have seen over the years, we should have at least 2 National Titles. We simply dont compete at the top any more. 20-2 with 10 to go in the first half yesterday and we lose by 41 points, what, 41 points, 41 points on the big stage in front of every high school player in the country. Do you think they have confidence in our coach or team. It is simply inexcusable. I dont even care if he cares for players etc and treats them like daughters. That should be parents or guardians.

In this day and time, it is a coach’s discipline along with motivation, and the team’s desire and talent. Our team simply wasn’t not even playing the same game. How can that be? One answer, Coaching!!!!! Yesterday should mark the end of the era and lets move on.

One last question, would a great coach ever let their team get blown out by 41 in the sweet sixteen. Not on your life and don’t blame the players.

The safety position is key. Richt and Grantham are going to have to put someone back there that knows what is going on. That might even mean finding another linebacker and moving “Tree” back to the safety position. We have had too many seasons of guys running around back there with no clue.

I’m so clever. I simply cut and paste the same drivel on these blogs. I hate UGA so much. It just kills me. I know I shouldn’t add to the hit count ’cause it only encourages more topics about UGA but I just can’t help it. I’m sad and pathetic. A complete loser. I’m ashamed to state where I wanted to go to school. I’ll post under another name soon.

BILL K.- There is a reason Logan Gray was the “go for broke ace returner” last year. If you read between the lines with King/Boykin back there with Smith ( not a good PR), then you would see why Gray was the main PR. He was the only one that could catch the ball with any consistancy.

There is a reason there are new guys back there trying out.

Fulmer Cup is a runaway for Auburn with a record 80 points.

Who is your team “6 wins”?

We aren’t on the Fulmer Cup scoresheet for 2011.

Who is your team?

Let’s see where they rank?

Shocking, SHOCKING that Jakar Hamilton and Shawn Williams are having a mediocre spring. Our safety corps is absolutely pathetic. Other than the OL, that has been our biggest weakness the last two years.
