Hines Ward closed out his UGA career in style. (Associated Press)
If you want to find agreement among UGA fans, bring up the name of Hines Ward.
Currently competing on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” Ward is known by the rest of the country for his long career as one of the NFL’s best wide receivers and a Super Bowl MVP for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
But for Georgia fans he’ll forever be the quintessential Bulldog, a guy who just wanted to get into the game and was willing to play any position to do so.
Recruited as a quarterback, Ward ended up playing running back and receiver as a freshman, then was thrown into the breach by Ray Goff as a sophomore after Mike Bobo was injured, starting at quarterback against Alabama even though he hadn’t practiced with the QBs since the previous year. The results weren’t pretty that first go-round, but when another QB injury necessitated Ward going back behind center later in the season, a legend was born.
Those who saw Ward’s valiant effort against Auburn on a freezing night in Athens will never forget the sight of him doubling over with pain from an injured wrist between plays as he almost pulled off an upset of the Tigers. He did lead the Dogs over Tech and then in the Peach Bowl set school bowl records for pass attempts, completions and yards in a losing effort against Virginia as he threw for 413 yards.
With the arrival of Jim Donnan the next year, Ward moved permanently to wide receiver for his last two seasons, though he frequently lined up in the backfield, too. Typical of his versatility was the win over Florida in 1997 when Ward had seven receptions for 85 yards, ran five times for 21 yards, completed two passes for 27 yards and returned two kickoffs for 70 yards.
All-SEC first team his senior year, Ward racked up 3,870 all-purpose yards, second only to Herschel Walker. Not coincidentally, Ward and Walker are the two Georgia players who’ve been immortalized wearing their UGA uniforms in sports action figures.

Hines Ward has his own UGA action figure. (McFarlane Toys)
I asked a few other fans for their favorite Bulldog memories of Ward and besides the tremendous effort against Auburn the highlights that came up most often were the crazy head-over-heels leap into the end zone on a reverse to secure a 2-point conversion against Texas Tech in 1996; that 1997 Florida game, where he was constantly scrapping with the cornerback, giving as good as he got; and the 1998 win over Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl, with Bobo and Ward playing pass-and-catch for a dozen receptions, another school bowl record. There’s a photo of Ward in that game hanging on the wall in my son’s old room, looking sharp in those black britches and with that wide, infectious grin that ABC viewers are getting to know.
Overall, though, it was Ward’s never-say-die attitude that left the most lasting impression on UGA fans. As my friend Johnny put it, “This kid just wanted to play. Hines never quit.”
Like I said, my favorite memory of Ward is that cold night in Athens when he was really hurting and yet still battled on.

The 1995 game against Auburn was as cold as I’ve been at a game. Ward also seemed to do it all in regulation of the 1996 upset against Auburn. I remember an Auburn fan asking me “Am I the only one who notices you guys give it to Ward every play?”

i remember the Peach Bowl game. Ward brought us back and then, during the kickoff while the ball was in the air, the PA announcer says:
“Bowl officials have decided that if the game ends in a tie in regulation, we WILL play overtime.”
7 seconds later, the Virginia KO returner was celebrating a 100 yard TD return.

Never see him that he doesn’t have a smile on his face. He has proved his worth in the pros, is a symbol of a tough player that gets the job done, and has been a real asset to his teammates.
I would enjoy seeing him get the recognition from UGA for being such a terrific athlete and an enduring player, willing to do whatever he could to help.
I’m a fan of Hines and always appreciate that smile. GO DAWGS

The 1995 Florida game. We were getting killed, destroyed, annihilated. The wrist that hurt so bad in the Auburn game was already bothering him. But Hines never quit, kept trying to dent the scoreboard to the bitter end.

1995 game was the coldest I have ever been at a football game….we stuck it out to the end, amazed at how Hines never gave up and how the ‘fans’ were carrying the treasured pieces of the old hedges out as fast as they could break them off. I also discovered that night that a fence was in amongst the hedges, and that the concession stands had a run on watery hot chocolate as fast as they could boil water!

Hines Ward became my favorite UGA player (or any for that matter) in 1995 when he unselfishly played 5 positions in an injury-ridden season. RB, WR, QB, PR, KR
The Peach Bowl against Virginia, while a loss and an exciting game was the pinnacle. UV absolutely pummeled him time and again with blitzes and him playing through it limping after every play and with a broekn wrist but yet he dredged onward.
The two point conversion for the win against Texas Tech in 1993 also sticks in my mind when he turned the summersault landing on his feet in the end zone, flashing that smile and walking toward the stands waving his hands upward (back when you could do this without getting nailed for 15 yards)!
Definitely NFL HOF bound and deservingly so.

Yeah, I guess ole Hines is pretty embarrassed about the goings on at Georgia the last few years, in all of the interviews I have seen him do, he has never once mentioned the fact that he played his college ball at Georgia. Yeah, can’t mention Georgia, but can’t say enough about that pos QB at Pittsburgh.

Columbus, I’ve seen him in pix with UGA gear a number of times. Newman has to grab fror something negative to say. Is there something about the number 19? Going 8 for 8 on 3rd down against Tech on the final drive to put us in FG range to beat Tech and become bowl eligible.
The peel back block vs. USC earlier that year to spring Edwards on the first of 7 TD’s he would score over the next 3 and 1/2 quarters.
Gaining well over 100 yards as a freshmen RB vs. Bama at Bryant-Denny.

Someone mentioned earlier about an Auburn person asking about throwing it to him every play. A funny story along those lines – when an old roommate of mine first got an XBox we would of course play Madden a good bit. He would always stay furious at me because I would always be the Steelers and I would basically throw to or run Hines on every play and I always won. He eventually refused to play me.
Anyway, other than Herschel, Hines has always been my favorite Dawg. The Florida, Auburn, and Peach Bowl in ‘95 all stand out with the Peach most of all. I will never forget the Dawgs being down against UVA and Hines almost single-handedly winning that game with a bad wrist, a bad rib (pretty sure it was a rib) and a bad knee. He basically dragged that leg behind him but still threw and ran all over the field. My wife always thinks I’m embellishing a bit but it doesn’t even matter in my mind. He played as hard or harder than anyone (except maybe D. Pollack) I’ve seen play at Georgia.

Anti-Dog,
Hines was NOT voted “one” of the NFL’s dirtiest players. He was voted, by his peers, as “THE” dirtiest player in the NFL. Is it because he gets a lot of flags? No. Its because he plays to the whistle and hunts heads to knock off. Other guys don’t like that. They aren’t playing a game like Hines is, they are working in a business and earning money. Hines jeopardizes that so they don’t like him. Any man his size who seeks out and puts Ray Lewis on his butt is deserving of respect. Most guys, for good reason, fear Ray. Hines puts him on his butt, with a smile. Lewis was quoted as saying that his entire purpose is to deny the other guy the will to play. I’m sure he’s accomplished that many, many times, but he won’t take away Hines’. If anything it’ll be the other way around and that is why Hines Ward is the man. They may call him “dirty”. I call him “old school tough” playing the game the way is was meant to be played; with intensity, violence and the joy of a child.

We used to joke that Hines Ward threw the ball downfield, ran and caught it himself, kicked the ensuing kickoff, tackled the return man, got a brief respite for a 3 and out, and then did it all again. If only he’d played defense… (didn’t he play corner a time or two?). What a classy guy and a great alum. Oh, and Anti-Dog, being voted the dirtiest player IS a great distinction in the NFL. My favorite Ward moment came in the 1995 South Carolina game (Robert Edwards’ five TD day). As Edwards cleared the corner and started to head down the sideline for an eventual TD, Ward reversed field and absolutely WRECKED a Carolina secondary player. He was decleated and defeated and Ward didn’t even break stride. He ran through him and began flapping his arms to get the fans on their feet.

Great reciever at Pittsburg,
Saw Ward before a playoff game with the Steelers on TV while the players were anouncing their name and college, and instead of saying he was from UGA, Ward said his name and that he was from Forest Park. If the fans were booing as in that Alabama game it was because the whole team took a humiliating spanking and just quit. Wasn’t necessarily Hine’s fault.
Back then Gene Stalling’s defenses at Alabama were perennially no 1- 3 in the nation every year in total defense. Ya can’t convert a wr into a qb in a couple of weeks and expect a miracle against a defense like Alabama.
Throwing Hines into the teeth of a firebreathing Stallings defense with only a week or 2 of practice was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen in football.

Yeah, Goff was definitely in over his head.
And GeoffDawg, if you’re goal was to creep us out – mission accomplished. Enough to make a “boy” puke.

Didnt Ward set a record as the first Dawg to rush, pass and receive for over a thousand yards in each category during his career?

Bruce Feldman has Crowell, as a dark horse HEISMAN TROPHY candidate.
On Feldman’s Top 10 list.

ESPN had several analysts predict who will win the Heisman in 2014.
Crowell came in as Runner Up.

I don’t think Georgia fans realize how good Crowell really is.

Ward is another great player to come through Athens that our fine coaching staff couldn’t use to win a championship.

I’m glad Hines got over the hard feelings he had towards UGA and it’s fans. During the introductions of the players of his first superbowl he wouldn’t even say Hines Ward University of Georgia.

I was at that Auburn game and the Peach Bowl game against UVA. Those two were my favorite memories of Hines as well. I think the Auburn game was tops however. Hines had a broken hand and was playing quarterback. He is definitely a WINNER. He will win dancing with the starts too. What a competitor!

Favorite story about Hines Ward – my mother-in-law and father-in-law (who had Alzheimer’s) were attending an Olympic event in Athens. “Mom” needed to use the ladies room, but couldn’t leave “Dad” alone for fear he’d wander off. Hines happened along. Calling him by name (cause she always knows her Dawgs) and introducing herself, she asked if he’d wait with “Dad”. He graciously agreed. She came out to find Hines waiting with Dad, trying his best to keep him from wandering away. Obviously, he didn’t have to do that. To this day (she’s over 80 and Dad’s gone), she thinks the world of Hines Ward – a class act that day for sure.

The tech game in 1995. Down 14-0 on the Flats…broken hand…didn’t he convert 11 straight third downs in the second half to lead us to a 15-14 win. In my mind, nobody gave us more. However, the two point coversion against Texas Tech in 1996 defied gravity at a Michael Jordan level and the block(s) he threw against Florida on Robert Edwards TD in 1997 may be the greatest block ever thrown…he took out seven or eight Gators on the play. And don’t forget his shoeless sprint across the Georgia Dome rug in 2005 with DeAngelo Hall gasping in pursuit. Where do I get the action figure?

The Peach Bowl we lost. He had a great game. I remember the first time he played the Falcons. They cut to him pre-game and he was yelling at one of the Falcons, “I don’t know what you are smiling about number (?). I’m going to bust you in the mouth!” What wide receiver says that? He and Robert Edwards are two of my favorite Dawgs. Wish we had more guys like that. I hope Samuel turns into that type of player.

A few salient comments:
1. Four different SEC teams have won the last five BCS championships.
2. UGA was not one of those teams.
3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.
4. During that period, UGA did not even win its SEC division.
5. Red panties.
In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.
So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

That ‘95 game took a lot out of me. We came so close and I was so distraught afterward, walking down the ramp from the upper level stands on the north side, I kicked the concrete wall and thought I had broken a toe. Hines and the Dawgs left it all out there on the field, but that loss ultimately was Goff’s undoing.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?
Because UGA won 90 games last decade under Mark Richt 7th most in the nation and 2nd most in the SEC.
7-3 in bowl games.
Winning record against every SEC opponent except Florida.
