If you want to find agreement among UGA fans, bring up the name of Hines Ward.
Currently competing on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” Ward is known by the rest of the country for his long career as one of the NFL’s best wide receivers and a Super Bowl MVP for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
But for Georgia fans he’ll forever be the quintessential Bulldog, a guy who just wanted to get into the game and was willing to play any position to do so.
Recruited as a quarterback, Ward ended up playing running back and receiver as a freshman, then was thrown into the breach by Ray Goff as a sophomore after Mike Bobo was injured, starting at quarterback against Alabama even though he hadn’t practiced with the QBs since the previous year. The results weren’t pretty that first go-round, but when another QB injury necessitated Ward going back behind center later in the season, a legend was born.
Those who saw Ward’s valiant effort against Auburn on a freezing night in Athens will never forget the sight of him doubling over with pain from an injured wrist between plays as he almost pulled off an upset of the Tigers. He did lead the Dogs over Tech and then in the Peach Bowl set school bowl records for pass attempts, completions and yards in a losing effort against Virginia as he threw for 413 yards.
With the arrival of Jim Donnan the next year, Ward moved permanently to wide receiver for his last two seasons, though he frequently lined up in the backfield, too. Typical of his versatility was the win over Florida in 1997 when Ward had seven receptions for 85 yards, ran five times for 21 yards, completed two passes for 27 yards and returned two kickoffs for 70 yards.
All-SEC first team his senior year, Ward racked up 3,870 all-purpose yards, second only to Herschel Walker. Not coincidentally, Ward and Walker are the two Georgia players who’ve been immortalized wearing their UGA uniforms in sports action figures.

I asked a few other fans for their favorite Bulldog memories of Ward and besides the tremendous effort against Auburn the highlights that came up most often were the crazy head-over-heels leap into the end zone on a reverse to secure a 2-point conversion against Texas Tech in 1996; that 1997 Florida game, where he was constantly scrapping with the cornerback, giving as good as he got; and the 1998 win over Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl, with Bobo and Ward playing pass-and-catch for a dozen receptions, another school bowl record. There’s a photo of Ward in that game hanging on the wall in my son’s old room, looking sharp in those black britches and with that wide, infectious grin that ABC viewers are getting to know.
Overall, though, it was Ward’s never-say-die attitude that left the most lasting impression on UGA fans. As my friend Johnny put it, “This kid just wanted to play. Hines never quit.”
Like I said, my favorite memory of Ward is that cold night in Athens when he was really hurting and yet still battled on.

I’m glad Hines got over the hard feelings he had towards UGA and it’s fans. During the introductions of the players of his first superbowl he wouldn’t even say Hines Ward University of Georgia.

I was at that Auburn game and the Peach Bowl game against UVA. Those two were my favorite memories of Hines as well. I think the Auburn game was tops however. Hines had a broken hand and was playing quarterback. He is definitely a WINNER. He will win dancing with the starts too. What a competitor!

Favorite story about Hines Ward – my mother-in-law and father-in-law (who had Alzheimer’s) were attending an Olympic event in Athens. “Mom” needed to use the ladies room, but couldn’t leave “Dad” alone for fear he’d wander off. Hines happened along. Calling him by name (cause she always knows her Dawgs) and introducing herself, she asked if he’d wait with “Dad”. He graciously agreed. She came out to find Hines waiting with Dad, trying his best to keep him from wandering away. Obviously, he didn’t have to do that. To this day (she’s over 80 and Dad’s gone), she thinks the world of Hines Ward – a class act that day for sure.

The tech game in 1995. Down 14-0 on the Flats…broken hand…didn’t he convert 11 straight third downs in the second half to lead us to a 15-14 win. In my mind, nobody gave us more. However, the two point coversion against Texas Tech in 1996 defied gravity at a Michael Jordan level and the block(s) he threw against Florida on Robert Edwards TD in 1997 may be the greatest block ever thrown…he took out seven or eight Gators on the play. And don’t forget his shoeless sprint across the Georgia Dome rug in 2005 with DeAngelo Hall gasping in pursuit. Where do I get the action figure?

The Peach Bowl we lost. He had a great game. I remember the first time he played the Falcons. They cut to him pre-game and he was yelling at one of the Falcons, “I don’t know what you are smiling about number (?). I’m going to bust you in the mouth!” What wide receiver says that? He and Robert Edwards are two of my favorite Dawgs. Wish we had more guys like that. I hope Samuel turns into that type of player.

A few salient comments:
1. Four different SEC teams have won the last five BCS championships.
2. UGA was not one of those teams.
3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.
4. During that period, UGA did not even win its SEC division.
5. Red panties.
In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.
So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

That ‘95 game took a lot out of me. We came so close and I was so distraught afterward, walking down the ramp from the upper level stands on the north side, I kicked the concrete wall and thought I had broken a toe. Hines and the Dawgs left it all out there on the field, but that loss ultimately was Goff’s undoing.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?
Because UGA won 90 games last decade under Mark Richt 7th most in the nation and 2nd most in the SEC.
7-3 in bowl games.
Winning record against every SEC opponent except Florida.
