UGA coaches looking to see who wins spring Dawg fights

Can Jakar Hamilton win back a starting job at safety? (Associated Press)

Can Jakar Hamilton win back a starting job at safety? (Associated Press)

After one practice March 10 and then releasing the hounds to play on the beach in Key West and other fun locales, Mark Richt gathers his team back on the Woodruff Practice Fields in Athens today to get serious about spring ball.

Between now and G-Day on April 16, some veterans will be trying to solidify their hold on a starting position (a few looking over their shoulders at the new guys coming in August) while other spots have been left pretty wide open by departures, as we discussed back before the first practice.

The bottom line, Mike Bobo told the Athens Banner-Herald, “is there’s going to be competition, you want competition. There’s going to be competition at every position on either side of the ball. We went 6-7, we didn’t get the job done. We didn’t finish at the end of games last year. We’ve got to have competition.”

While in reality some players probably do have their position locked down, the coaching staff obviously is encouraging the idea that the hungriest, hardest-working players will start.

There are several key spots where spring competition should be interesting. Washaun Ealey, Caleb King, Ken Malcome and Carlton Thomas will be competing to be the man Isaiah Crowell has to beat out. Marlon Brown, Rantavious Wooten, Israel Troupe, Michael Bennett and Chris Conley are trying to join Tavarres King at wide receiver before Malcolm Mitchell shows up. Can Jakar Hamilton, Shawn Williams or Marc Deas win the other safety spot alongside Bacarri Rambo, or will a true freshman figure there come fall? And how about the battle for backup quarterback or the competition for a starting spot under a new coach on the rejiggered offensive line?

Which of the battles for playing time will you be watching most closely?

BACK AT FOLEY FIELD

The widely traveled Diamond Dogs return home to Foley Field to face rival Georgia Tech tonight, with first pitch set for 7:06 p.m. The game, the first of three scheduled against the Jackets this season, will be televised by CSS. Last year, the hapless Dogs were swept by Tech, but while this year’s team got off to a rough start, they’ve improved a lot the past couple of weeks and have competed well against ranked opponents. Here’s hoping …

On offense im looking for a stud to break out and be the big time WR. get out there and take the ball beacuse “it’s yours”

1.) Avoid jail time like Auburn
2.) Avoid arrests like Barron at Bama
3.) Lemay-plan on using him 25-40% of the game based on Murray’s effectiveness.
4.) Emphasize running the ball first and work on it over and over

Let Auburn win the 2011 Fulmer Cup and don’t even appear in the Fulmer Cup rankings.

I would like to see some competition at the play-calling position!! While our total scoring output was OK last year, our 4th quarter offense was weak, and we were too predictable and ineffective at times. While our underperforming offensive line and running game were parts of the problem, our play-calling was inexplicable at times as well…. If I had to choose one position battle to watch, it would be the entire offensive line. If we could find 5 dominant lineman, with a few key reserves, we can overcome any weaknesses our offense might have.

As a coach, albeit in another sport, I have never understood how important competition is at positions until you have it. It makes everyone hungrier, sharper, and just more enthusiastic about practicing. Get after it Dawgs. While all the other teams are busy posting bail, you can get a big head start on what promises to be a very interesting and exciting season. Go Dawgs!

I hope to see the defense improved. Coach Grantham finally has the the space eating nose tackle he needed last year along with more talent recruited in hopefully Big John Jenkins will be as good or better than advertised.. if he is, and stays healthy, the UGA defense will be much better than last year.
I hope to see the offensive line protect Murray better, and the running back competition will be interesting to watch as well.

Bobo & Richt claim there’s a competition every Spring. There’s not. Richt puts in who he wants. It’s Murray. Period.

Remember last year all the talk from Richt about competing and how the QB might not surface “until the bullets were real?” What a luagh. Please. Mett desroyed Murray over Spring, outcompeting him by a mile, and Richt named Murray starter.

Here’s last year’s “we’re competing” hyperbole from Richt & Bobo:

We definitely need some competition at safety. Rambo looks like he’s got the skills but the kid gave up on a number of plays. That needs to stop right now. We need a kid that’s going to go 110% every play. I don’t think they know just how much of a privilege it is to suit up in the red and black. Everybody in the state lives and dies right along side this team. Everybody that matters anyway. Running back is an obvious battle, nobody took hold of the job last year. Crowell may be great and I hope he is but Ealey and King should be miles ahead of him and they probably are not. @ Vance Duly, you got a point… I could pick out exactly when a run up the middle was coming, (usually 70% of the time) they need to take Bobo’s playbook and rip that page out.

The two things I look forward to is the RB competition and the safety battle. I mean if i remember correct there was an article on ajc not too long ago talking to the running backs (well just King anyways) and King was saying how he was going to take Crowell under his wing (not that I like that idea too much) But what I really like in was they were going to speak to Washuan but he didnt even speak to the media……I enjoyed that because that shows me he is WORKING and not talking so freaking much. Also I think Jakar was not so much a bust he had 1 pick 6 (yeah I know against a weak team) but do not count him out . Rambo is good but he has not been the same since he laid that hit on AU in 2009. I hope this year will be different from past years when everybody knew that freshmen didn’t have a chance to play their first year and would be red shirted . It didn’t matter how good they were. Only a select few would get to play at positions that didn’t have any depth and it was the last resort. Since what the team does on the field means where CMR will get an extension on his contract or not I hope that practice is no longer in force. Even though a lot of the times since the recruit is not coming from a very complicated system in high school and the only have a month to learn the play book I agree most should be red shirted but a lot more could be playing at least by the 3rd game. CMR will be doing things a lot different this year.
McGarity IS WATCHING.
A few positive changes have all ready come about. Getting rid of the so called dreaded MAT DRILLS is one. Now it will be year round tough conditioning like it should be. Also CMR finally realized that every kid coming out of high school doesn’t have the discipline and maturity that he raised is kids with and don’t deserve to be given the benefit of the doubt. These are two very positive admissions and we will see huge improvements from last year.

Why is Baccari Rambo guaranteed a starting position? I didn’t see anything from him last year to warrant that. With a 6/7 record, no one should be guaranteed a starting job. All positions should be opened to the best player. That’s how you get them to compete harder. Bobo should be taking a look at himself and his choice of playcalling. Make or break season for CMR. Let’s see just how bad he wants to keep his job. UGA has a really bad recruiting effort going right now. We are way behind other top programs. Alabama brings in top players every year and there are no excuses about we can’t recruit because our previous class was so good. Bull Crap!!!!!

Richt actually went for it on 4th and short more often than usual last year. Converted 5/8 to be exact. So going for it is not really going to be a change.

I personally wanted him to go for it on that (play you are refering to), but I understand where he was coming from. 6-0 when scoring first, 0-6 when not, had been widely talked about that week.

And even though the popular theory is that he sent the wrong message, I personally believe he was making a calculated point to the players hoping to challange them. It didn’t work.

His responce when asked what he told the players at that point:

“If you want a first down, how about do it right there. Don’t get stuffed on that 3rd and short, then run over here asking me to go for it. Do your job!” paraphasing.

He has turned into nothing more than a “Domesticated House Cat” after that hit in the 2009 Auburn game. Too bad because he looked so good in his Freshman year, but he has seriously regressed. I am most scared and interested in the safety play this year, especially since Ogletree is moving to ILB. He is a beast and probably showed the most improvement last year of any of the DB’s. Corner play scares me too and still the soft coverage that I thought we got rid of when WM walked the plank. Hamilton can lay the wood but rarely did it. Maybe having a beast in Ogletree to help on the run and underneath passes without having to rush the passer like Houston was primarily used will keep the safties eyes on the QB or sticking to TE or SE. The amount of 3rd and long plays given up where pittiful. Just think and look back at what the score would have been to the majority of the close games if we hadn’t. Our offense was actually clicking well except when bobo called a draw on 3 and 7 with little CT. That little guy is a speedster to atleast get him in space with a screen or over the middle dump of with Charles knocking heads while blocking.. Him and White blocked better than the whole O line on run plays. I will be content witht he Offense repeating last year for the most part but the lazy D has got to stop. A. Murray, Green, Durham, Dent, and Houstan were the only players that played 100% even though Murray would get anxious and out of whack in the 4th.

There are no excuses not to. Yet McGarity has already built in excuses by saying something to the effect of success this year isn’t necessarily winning the SEC East.

WHY THE HECK NOT?

If we can’t win the East this year, then Richt has GOT to go. Does anyone disagree?

AltamahaDawg

March 22nd, 2011
6:05 pm

I do. If you were the actual AD you would never put that sort of an absolute on it. You aren’t. You can. That’s cool.

Now if we “can’t”, literally can’t, as in don’t have the ability, then yes. I think you are saying if we don’t. UGA won the east is a 3 way tie before, and a couple of the better teams failed to win the east. So it’s just not that simple

Richt has to show that he has the performance of the team headed in the correct direction, and also that the 2012 recruiting class is shaping up to meet expectation. That is the reality of what he has to do. Also I believe there is a side narrative going on about the defense stabilizing and the offensive staff being under closer scrutiny.

Oops, I should have asked first: where you asking that in the scope of reality, or are we just all patting each other on the back?

Football Dawgs, during the season, play most of their match play opponents with swagger,
but when they get to Jacksonville, it is like teeing it up in another venue,
like Augusta, Amen Corner, in the hunt, but somehow the roar of the crowd behind
them and ahead of them, makes them start to shank, three putt.
Just an Analogy, but it’s the same principle.
They really need a sports psychologist (aka Jimbo Fisher, aka Paul Azinger, Ryder
Cup captain winner,) to get their minds right.

We must have better play from both lines in order to win the East this season.Garner and Friend both need to deliver the goods or we will be scrambling to win 8-9 games. There is hope…center and tackle are set… so Friend needs to find two starters from the 7-8 kids he has to work with.On the defensive side it can’t help but get better than last season…we gave up 21rushing tds in the red zone finishing 11th in the SEC.I know seeing Tripp and Wood playing inside in the 4 man front was hard to watch.Beef is on the way in Jenkins and they say Kwame has turned into a work out warrior and is expected to get heavy minutes.Simply not getting blown off the ball all the time should yield huge dividends for the defense.
I’m not that worried about the secondary…we finished 5th in interceptions and 6th in pass efficiency defense with a DL who got manhandled most games and a pass rush that only produced 24 sacks…9th in the league. So improved DL play should equate to tighter coverage.

The player whom I’m most interested in seeing play in Todd Grantham 3-4 defense is Quintavious Harrow. This young man is not afraid to put the BIG HIT on you and he doesn’t miss tackles. If anyone think Mr Richt used him to lure his best friend Isaiah Crowell better think again.

Why is Baccari Rambo guaranteed a starting position? I didn’t see anything from him last year to warrant that.

Rambo was the crappiest player on the team last year. He should have been dismissed so he could begin his career as a night fry cook at the Waffle House.

Some posts on this blog are unreal. Some of you act as though CMR puts players on the field that shouldn’t be out there. I’m sure he puts the players on the field that he thinks give us the best chance of winning. Same with CMB, he calls plays that he thinks give us an opportunity to get a 1st down or a TD. Because some plays don’t work out alot of you think he calls plays to lose.
None of these coaches goes out on gameday and plays to lose. No coach does, but to read some of you, you would think differently.
To those of you that say Murray shouldn’t have started over Mettingberger? Murray wasn’t announced as starter until Mett was arrested.
Also those of you that think Mett wont play at LSU, better think again. He’ll play.
Anybody thats ever played any type of sports knows that coaches bring up the competition thing to make players work harder, even though some players are already penciled in.
Hopefully everybody stays healthy and has a good and productive spring pratice.

I keep mortified that the UGA coach(es) seem to always be behind even the fans in what needs to be done on the field…….from firing the defensive coordinator, to not playing someone based on favoritism but on competition, to not using silly gimmicks like dancing, sending the team onto the field, wearing different uniforms, etc., to needing more strength and conditioning, to needing new play calling on the sidelines, to not kicking field goals when you’ve driven all the way down the field, etc, etc. Our coaches need to be out front with all of this, but they never are. I’m hoping this year will be better than last year, but I’m not betting on it.

Camel, I wouldn’t be overly “mortified” about it. If in 10 yrs the list of thing that they are behind in is that small, it’ll be ok. Especially consider that list contained duplications, things that have been corrected, things that are not unique to these coaches at all, and a couple of things that are purely made up opinion.

Like all staffs, they learn from mistakes and hopefully bank the knowledge, right?

In football Alabama has the same problem with us. It doesn’t matter how good both are Alabama has had a mental problem against us for quite a while now and will again in 2012 unless we see them in the play off in 2010.

Does any one know if the Athens cops are as easy on our football players?

The officer offered Barron multiple chances to provide more concrete details even calling Baron’s mother and grandmother at their home on Butts Street, Levy said.

Barron maintained his version of events and was told at that point the officer had no other choice but to arrest him and process him, Levy said.

Wow…you have to be really stupid to get arrested in Bama.

Aaron Zeir and Eric Murray are ......

March 23rd, 2011

AM and EZ remind me of each other. Both played a game vs Florida and coulda/shoulda/woulda won it. Eric had the Dogs on the Gator 3 and his three passes into the end zone in a driving rain were dropped by Randy McMichael or another UGA TE.

Murray simply played horribly vs Florida in his one shot so far BUT did have a 50/50 shot but failed miserably. He CHOKED …………….IN his home state too. Not good. That OT pass was dumb and was FORCED. Dumb it was.

Both QBs have or will have some hefty stats. I do hope that Murray can make his count. He needs to have several big WINNING outtings vs the better SEC teams or he will forever be considered just another so so thrower.

This is his year to build that WINNING FOUNDATION. David Green, Andy Johnson, Mike Cavan and too many other UGA QBS had WONDERFUL soph years and were surrounded by less skilled talent.

Can Murray have that magic soph year?? Time will tell.

And as eveyone gets on Bobo’s back, why not Grantham? He came in at $750,000 and teams were scoring points in bunches against him. The choke sign and his stupid comments about the Auburn offense not being that good. (Dude they scored 42 on you in three quarters, Bobo’s group tried to keep up but your sorry play calling on defense couldn;t come close to stoping Auburn).

What’s the deal with all the Rambo hating?Fact is Bacarri was the only soph and under player in the top 20 in tackles in the SEC.Who said he was a big hitter to begin with? He’s a FS not SS….FS are you last line of defense run or pass.Considering our run defense was horrible AND our pass rush was weak(9th in SEC) it should come as no surprise that the kid may have bit too often on the play action pass.Just because he knocked himself out against AUB doesn’t mean he was some fearsome hitter to begin with…prior to that game he wasn’t known as some kind of a headhunter anyway.

My two cents….
1. The S&C program “upgrades” will help in 4th quarter conditioning this year, but not so much in size and strength. It took years for the decline to take effect, so I think it will take years for the turnaround to take effect as well. Common sense.
2. Bobo and Richt still play favorites, no matter what they say. It is in their nature. Unless you are a total scrub, if you pay your dues to them, you will not get benched by someone younger who is only marginally better in practice. In Richt’s program, you gotta really stand out like AJ or Ogletree to get in the game early.
3. If Richt can’t beat Florida this year then…..what a minute, I said that last year. The truth is, Richt will never beat Florida, more than on occasion. If McGarity and the alumni want more, then they had better place an add in the paper.
4. This year’s team might be worse than last year’s. Yes, get used to that idea. They lost a lot of key players, whom we don’t need to name. Murray is a bright spot, but he is short of some weapons (yeah, I know Crowell is coming). The defense will rely heavily on how that JUCO transfer NT works out. If he can’t jam up the middle, then our inexperienced LB’s and secondary are going to be gouged.
5. Bobo is still the OC. Nuff said.
