File the latest Ohio State absurdity under Believe It Or Not!

Jim Tressel apparently outranks Ohio State University's president. (Associated Press)

I’m sure I wasn’t the only colllege football fan left slack-jawed while reading about the latest scandal involving future UGA opponent Ohio State.

And I’m not talking about Jim Tressel being suspended for a measly two games and fined $250,000 by his school after it came out he’d conducted a massive cover-up last season of NCAA violations by five of his players — the same five Tressel lobbied the NCAA not to suspend until this season so he’d finally have a chance to get a win over an SEC team in a bowl game.

And my amazement wasn’t even due to the incredible disparity between the protracted, kid-gloves handling of the OSU investigation compared with the speedy hammering of A.J. Green by the NCAA for a similar infraction as committed by the Buckeye players, resulting in Mark Richt having to open a season without his main offensive threat while Tressel got to arrange his team’s sanction so that it did the least harm. Life is unfair, as Jimmy Carter once said, but we already knew that.

No, what gobsmacked me this morning while reading about Tresselgate was the reply of E. Gordon Gee, president of the Ohio State University, when asked if he ever considered firing Tressel for what he’d done.

“No, are you kidding me?” Gee answered. “Let me be very clear. I’m just hoping the coach doesn’t dismiss me.”

Wow. I’m no Michael Adams booster, but I can’t even begin to imagine UGA’s president ever uttering such a spineless comment.

Meanwhile, the NCAA, which hasn’t exactly covered itself in glory as college football’s watchdog this past year, has a perfect example of its dreaded “lack of institutional control” sitting right out in the open in Columbus, Ohio, but they apparently can’t see it for the sweater-vest.

What a joke.

Well just relax ya’ll this stuff with OSU isn’t a big deal , I mean its not like they were driving with revoked incenses or drinking underage…no major crimes like that NO NO they were merely systematically breaking the rules and then the coaching staff was covering that up…little things like that..

Amen, Bill, amen.

What Gordon Gee said is dumber than anything Charlie Sheen has ever said.

Yes, I’m sure Gee was attempting to make light of the situation with a joke. Unfortunately, it was not only an inappropriate time to do that and an inappropriate way of doing it, but it also pretty well summed up the way OSU has approached this situation.

Where are you? You talk a good talk about OSU and supposed, high character program. Oh well, I guess it happens to everyone. Sure is nice when you make the rules and let the NCAA know how you will self-inforce your own punishment. It is tough when the shoe is on the other foot, isn’t it??

I’m not surprised with E. Gordon Gee’s remarks. After all, he had the audacity to say that Boise State and TCU were not worthy of their high ranking last year, even if they went undefeated. This coming from the president of a school who typically plays only one or two tough opponents per year, usually losing to one of them, in addition to losing their bowl game. And, they don’t have a conference championship to deal with. I wonder if the various polls will have Ohio State ranked in the top 3 at the beginning of the season like they always do. I know that they will be missing their coach, quarterback, and others, but after all, they did finally beat a SEC team, or they stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

Ohio State is guilty as sin. I work with different athletic departments around the country. I talked with another coach in the Big Ten who said he cannot believe the worship of OSU. He said that Tressel is the slimiest coach in the country.

There are facts is this case that proves OSU is guilty, but it amazes me how BSPN has swept this under the rug and act like it is no big deal. They covered the Cam Newton stuff like Watergate and tried to even make stuff up but have barley touched the OSU mess.

Amazing.

My question is will the NCAA step in and make The Ohio State University fire Jim Tressell, will there be conference championship and bowl game restrictions and will there be loss of scholarships? Those are the legitimate questions that need answering. Also will all wins from last year be forfeited? If not then the NCAA should be abolished.

When is finally going to come to a point where the NCAA is broken up and we have a legit form of college athletics!! NCAA dropped the ball when they allowed “The Tat 5″ to lay in the sugar bowl and now they come off looking like even bigger idiots. The only way the NCAA gets out of this w/o looking liking chumps is to drop the hammer on Tressel

What can you expect when the amount of money involved in college sports challenges the national debt?

Or when there is a Las Vegas betting line for big college events and games on par with pro sports.

The point is, if every school was scrutinized, none, IMO, would pass the smell test. So the gamesmanship is suspect. The MSM sportscasters are frothing over the prospect that the OSU story will have enough traction to give them ginned up coverage until the next season begins. That hungry media monster must be fed with new meat; “if it bleeds, it leads.” That is their mantra.

The underlying corruption is allowed to fester unchecked. The universities with their sports programs are large business entities. Bad enough on the pro level; tragic on the undergraduate level. When college coaches make more money than the president of the US, we have a problem in our value system. And I still say the main culprit is television contracts. This is a national dilemma; no conference is exempt.

ViningsDawg,

Actually ESPN is killing Tressel. You should listen to Cowherds show today, he was destroying Tressel. At one point it was so bad I could here the bus getting ready to warm up to roll Tressel. This is just the start. The media is going to drive this home and ultimately it may cost Tressel his job.

I think the fair thing to do is fire Tressel, make Gee the coach, and schedule his first two games next year with TCU and Boise State.

I think Ohio State should have to forfeit it season last year , a coach knowing his big time QB had done this and allowed him to play ball ,knowing all along teams like Georgia and others had to play with key player out for 5 games.
