Bulldog quotables: On fourth-quarter struggles, suspensions and more

It was an interesting week for the Bulldog Nation, with a big win for the basketball Dogs, some personnel moves in football and the first fresh comments we’ve had in a while from Mark Richt and his team as they get ready to start spring practice on Thursday.

Here are a few Bulldog quotes from the week that stuck with me, some of which might prompt further discussion …

“We didn’t do mat drills this year because the workouts kind of eliminated that. Every day is a mat drill. Every day you’re working hard. Doing these workouts, we’ll definitely be a stronger fourth quarter team. If you look at last year, we really couldn’t finish in the fourth quarter. I feel like these workouts will eliminate that fourth-quarter struggle.”

— Tavarres King discussing Georgia’s new workout regimen, which made the old mat drills obsolete, and confirming what we’d all concluded last season: The Dogs were not in good shape and faded in the fourth quarter.

“My leg got amputated last weekend, so I’ve only got one leg. I’ve got to steal one to play the season with.”

— Aaron Murray tweaking campus newspaper The Red and Black, which misreported he had broken his ankle in two places after he sprained it playing in a pickup game of soccer.

“Most days I thank him for that.”

— Mark Fox on LSU coach Trent Johnson, who introduced Fox to his future wife.

“We want him to be great and he can be if he really takes the right attitude towards it. … We just wanted to grab his attention in all areas, though. I told him and I’ll tell all our guys this: Especially our tailback position is a position of honor, a position of tradition. It’s a position you need to respect, and you need to be the very best you can possibly be.”

Mark Richt on Washaun Ealey’s suspension and subsequent reinstatement to the team.

“Just watching the way he runs, he closes on people, the way he can blitz, I think he can be a unique player at that position.”

— Todd Grantham on Alec Ogletree and his move from safety to inside linebacker.

“This has been a great experience here. I had fun the whole time I was here.”

— Jeremy Price of the basketball Dogs on Senior Night.

“We faced a below-average pitcher that we couldn’t put things together against. That’s just the game. That’s guys getting out of their element and not taking care of their situation and putting pressure on guys behind them. It’s the game that we have to play better and the game that we have to execute better.”

— Baseball coach David Perno after his struggling Diamond Dogs suffered a shutout loss to Furman.

“I was lying on the ground saying, ‘I don’t want to talk to Coach Bobo right now.’”

— Aaron Murray on how he felt immediately after injuring that ankle.

“I want these guys to live their lives and enjoy it. It seems like no matter what you do, somebody can still stumble down the steps and get hurt. So I’ve never really done that.”

— Mark Richt on why he doesn’t forbid members of his team from playing other sports.

“We’ve got to get him healthy. The poor kid has been hurt the entire year.”

— Mark Fox on Trey Thompkins, whose latest ailment threatening his playing time is an ingrown toenail.

“This year, it’s kind of like do-or-die.”

— Brandon Boykin, offering a concise summation of the football Dogs’ mind-set about the 2011 season.

Feel free to sound off on any of that or whatever else about UGA sports is on your mind this weekend.

Who is going to block for the rbs? We don’t have a fullback! So we are taking a tightend to block. MR is over paid. We should have a fullback in waiting. It is the same sh’t every year. These coaches are paid way to much. IDK what these coaches do when its not the spring or fall. I guess go home and draw a check. Its the off season that makes teams great. Homework! Earn your dam money!

I got a great idea! lets go swimming so Boise can beat the living sh’t out of us. You guys look tired and im wantn to backflip for you guys. Swimming will help us in the 4th quarter. if you guys don’t like swimming we can ride horses.Hmmmmmm. All the rest of the SEC teams are not using their time wisely. We are using every minute w our swimming and horsy riding. Upbeat practice? oh no! that would kill us. we need to slow down. we have plenty of time. just look how we looked last year. we got it going on. The dam ga way. Every single year penalties, poor coaching, no discipline, poor tackling, poor blocking, tired players, no leadership, etc etc etc

PLEASE JUST PLAY HARD NOSED, KNOCK UR ASS IN THE DIRT FOOTBALL. RUN THE BALL. SET UP THE PASS. IF THE RUN IS WORKING, KEEP RUNNING, STOP TAKING A HOT RB OUT AND PUTTING A COLD ONE IN. WE NEED ONE FEATURED BACK TO RUN AND RUN AND RUN. IT STARTS IN THE TRENCHES ON OL AND DL.

Look for Murray to take up Bungee jumping and skydiving soon. What a smart guy. Nice that Richt lets Murray participate in extreme sports.

Ealey got 11 td’s, Caleb King got 2.

What’s this Richt’s saying about Ealey CAN be great?

Scored 6x more td’s than King, did it on less than 160 carries, something only 3 running backs in America pulled off.

That’s an easy one, Buckeye. Everyone knows it was Jack Tatum that blocked for Archie. Rex Kern was a hell’uva receiver, too.

What is the Buckeyes’ record against the SEC in the last 2 decades or so?

I’m not a real Ohio State fan, I just act like it. Please don’t ask me any hard questions, I’ll have to research, over several minutes, and then get back with you. I jut try to post irrelvant off topic postings because it hurts my feelings when people say bad stuff about Murray or Richt. I am hoping this plan will work, doesn’t it make sense?

No Buckeye, it didn’t work. Richt’s had less wins than they year before 7 out fo last 8 seasons, and Murray is 0-6 against winning teams.

Fisher, right on man, Murray gets to do whatever he wants because he’s Richt’s favorite. Just like AJ Green, man, if AJ had worked out hard, AJ couldn’t have been something special at Georgia. But Richt let AJ slide.

Please don’t post negative things about Murray, even if they’re true. I only want to hear positive things about Murray. He thre 24 touchdowns and almost 3000 yards. Played great against Vanderbilt, Idaho State, and Louisiana Lafayette.

There is a major difference or two between Walker and Ealey. Walker had character and he could also drive a car.

Oh yeah, Walker could break tackles and was fast on a world class level. He was also 6′2″ and was around 220 and was a decent student. He was respected by most observers.

Beyond that, the two backs are similar.

PC, here is the deal: we all have eyes. We saw what we saw. This past season team let 3-4 games get away from it that it could have won because of 4th quarter ineffectiveness. I’d say it’s more complicated that just “conditioning”, but still they did not finish the games well. THAT was an issue. He was addressing THAT. (I don’;t believe he ever said…….”oh we simply don’t care about anything but the 4th quarter, or starting well in the first). Are you saying that you Don’t think they need to work on the 4th quarter????? I’m sure not.

I think what you really meant to say was:

“way to go coach, That’s great, and should be a big help. But in addition to that, I’d like to see us score first, because I figured out a obviously redundant factor that could be applied to every team in the history of the game, concerning outscoring opponents.”

PC

March 7th, 2011
12:58 pm

It’s how you set the tone at the START, not how you finish, that counts.

It ain’t finishing the drill, it’s setting the tone.

Score 1st, and Richt wins 90% of the games.

PC

March 7th, 2011
12:59 pm

In other words, Richt’s core philosophy is wrong.

PC

March 7th, 2011

It’s also DUMB to PLAN FOR CLOSE GAMES.

Be like Stanford’s old coach and PLAN TO BLOW OUT EVERY TEAM BY 50.

CLOSE GAMES ARE FOR LOSERS.

PC

Here’s how the 2011 UGA football schedule will break down:

Top 25 teams: Boise, SC, Aub, Fla, Miss St.
Richt’s record: 1-4 (went 0-6 last season against winning teams)

Mid-Tier Teams: Tenn, Kent, Ga Tech
Richt’s record: 1-2 (all 3 are very dangerous games)

Lower Tier Teams: C Car, Ole Miss, Vand, NM St.
Richt’s record: 4-0

Totals:
6 wins, 6 losses

PC

March 7th, 2011
1:18 pm

Richt could also go:

0-5 against top 25 teams, 2-1 against mid-tier, and 4-0 against 3td tier, 6-6 again

PC

March 7th, 2011
1:20 pm

Best case:

2-3 vs. top 25, 3-0 vs. 2nd tier, 4-0 vs. 3rd tier, 9-3 finish

PC
