Bulldog quotables: On fourth-quarter struggles, suspensions and more

Mark Richt still thinks Washaun Ealey can be great. (Associated Press)

It was an interesting week for the Bulldog Nation, with a big win for the basketball Dogs, some personnel moves in football and the first fresh comments we’ve had in a while from Mark Richt and his team as they get ready to start spring practice on Thursday.

Here are a few Bulldog quotes from the week that stuck with me, some of which might prompt further discussion …

“We didn’t do mat drills this year because the workouts kind of eliminated that. Every day is a mat drill. Every day you’re working hard. Doing these workouts, we’ll definitely be a stronger fourth quarter team. If you look at last year, we really couldn’t finish in the fourth quarter. I feel like these workouts will eliminate that fourth-quarter struggle.”

— Tavarres King discussing Georgia’s new workout regimen, which made the old mat drills obsolete, and confirming what we’d all concluded last season: The Dogs were not in good shape and faded in the fourth quarter.

“My leg got amputated last weekend, so I’ve only got one leg. I’ve got to steal one to play the season with.”

— Aaron Murray tweaking campus newspaper The Red and Black, which misreported he had broken his ankle in two places after he sprained it playing in a pickup game of soccer.

“Most days I thank him for that.”

— Mark Fox on LSU coach Trent Johnson, who introduced Fox to his future wife.

“We want him to be great and he can be if he really takes the right attitude towards it. … We just wanted to grab his attention in all areas, though. I told him and I’ll tell all our guys this: Especially our tailback position is a position of honor, a position of tradition. It’s a position you need to respect, and you need to be the very best you can possibly be.”

Mark Richt on Washaun Ealey’s suspension and subsequent reinstatement to the team.

“Just watching the way he runs, he closes on people, the way he can blitz, I think he can be a unique player at that position.”

— Todd Grantham on Alec Ogletree and his move from safety to inside linebacker.

“This has been a great experience here. I had fun the whole time I was here.”

— Jeremy Price of the basketball Dogs on Senior Night.

“We faced a below-average pitcher that we couldn’t put things together against. That’s just the game. That’s guys getting out of their element and not taking care of their situation and putting pressure on guys behind them. It’s the game that we have to play better and the game that we have to execute better.”

— Baseball coach David Perno after his struggling Diamond Dogs suffered a shutout loss to Furman.

“I was lying on the ground saying, ‘I don’t want to talk to Coach Bobo right now.’”

— Aaron Murray on how he felt immediately after injuring that ankle.

“I want these guys to live their lives and enjoy it. It seems like no matter what you do, somebody can still stumble down the steps and get hurt. So I’ve never really done that.”

— Mark Richt on why he doesn’t forbid members of his team from playing other sports.

“We’ve got to get him healthy. The poor kid has been hurt the entire year.”

— Mark Fox on Trey Thompkins, whose latest ailment threatening his playing time is an ingrown toenail.

“This year, it’s kind of like do-or-die.”

— Brandon Boykin, offering a concise summation of the football Dogs’ mind-set about the 2011 season.

Feel free to sound off on any of that or whatever else about UGA sports is on your mind this weekend.

If I were a UGA player other than a tailback, I would be very unhappy with my head coach. The above quote from CMR in reference to Ealy: “I consider tailback to be a position of honor at UGA” . Any player regardless of where he plays is representing his school and should be considered as playing a position of “honor”. CMR should apologize to every other player who does not play tailback. The OL in particular.

Buckeye calling someone out for spelling? My advice for you is to use proper spelling & grammar in the very post you’re criticizing someone else. Otherwise, you really just look like the idiot you are.

Question: why are you so obsessed with Trey’s name? Do you not know how common it is for men who are “the third” to go by Trey? In case you are wondering, another common nickname is Chip. It is really strange how much time you spend on him. Maybe it’s a secret love you have for him?

Do us all a favor, clean up your own school’s problems before sounding like an idiot regarding ours. I’ve read a lot of your comments over the last few months & honestly, you don’t seem to know a great deal about football or basketball. It seems all you really focus on is problems, and oddly, ours not yours. You do give us plenty of material to ridicule you with, so maybe that’s your intention. If so, then thank you for the laughs.

Now, if you care to discuss actual sports, feel free. Just remember, we all have the internet too & can do the same google searches you do. Yes, I have looked after you rarely post actual sports related items. It’s pretty funny that you copy & paste items. You really should give credit to the writers of the information.

Have a great Dawg day! (yes, I know we just lost to Alabama before you spout off about that)

Love my,

I’ve explained many times that I am a Howard( before I was Trey) fan. Not going to explain why again.

Sources? I’ve never ( or never intended anyway) not claimed a source. Some of the heavy duty stat stuff…perhaps I’ve missed one here or there. I credit si, mandel, theonzone.net, etc. Charge not warranted.

Spelling? Most screw up on this board. This is hardly a legal document….jeez.

Google searches….the 9th wonder of the world, wouldn’t you say?

Not know a great deal about football or basketball? Try me.

Focus on your problems not Ohio States? I am proud of our record. I’ve owned up to our shortcomings. Team and individual. Tatts, Clarrett, Schliter, 1-9, “suckeye” and the rest.

Riducule me…my skin is a bit thicker than that.

Lost to Alabama…sorry, man. Hopefully Howard ( before I was Trey) heals in the next few days and he hustles down court on every possession as he did on the last today. I am a fan – just want to see more from he because of the incredible talent.

I know more about Howard ( before I was Trey) than you ever will.

Peace Out.

For those ignoramuses that say Georgia is now a second class school because they have not won a National Championship since 1980, let me show you a few facts.
Since 1980, only 18 teams have won a national championship. Some, like Fla., Nebraska, Florida St., LSU, Alabama, Miami, Oklahoma and Penn State have won several.
So, if only winning only one National Championship in thirty years, makes you a second class school, let me name you some other schools who, like Georgia, have only one once (hence they too are second class). How about losers such as, Ohio State, Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Texas, Auburn, Clemson, BYU, Ga. Tech and Colorado.
Then look at the poor losers that haven’t won any. Are Michigan, Texas A&M, UCLA, Washington, Arkansas, NC State, Iowa, W. Va., Va. Tech, Boston College, Old Miss, Arizona State, Boise State and Oklahoma State, plus hundreds of other schools, losers?
Next to Florida, Georgia has the best record, during the BCS er, of any SEC school. I’ll take a loser like that any day!

Buckeye, first of all, I’m a woman, so “man” is not the appropriate address. Of course you are a buckeye & I know it’s the way your so respectful players address female reporters, so maybe it’s ok for you also. Please reference all interviews done by your friend Pryor.

Second, the reason I called out your spelling was because of your little smarty pants comment to D A. Basically showing you to mind your own spelling before blasting someone else. It’s asinine. I understand it’s not a “legal document…geez”, just wasn’t sure if you knew that.

Third, I didn’t even look at your mat drills video. A lot of your postings are only amusing or interesting to yourself.

You truly add nothing to these blogs. I guess sometimes I wonder what motivates someone like yourself to post incessantly on the UGA blogs. Do you post a lot on the OSU blogs or just ours? What about Tech’s? Georgia State? Georgia Southern? Michael Jackson’s?
Knowing that Michigan is your rival, what about their blogs?

Honestly, it’s simply curiosity on my part. To me, a sane person, I would find no enjoyment, excitement or interest in reading or commenting on others’ blogs. As a sports fan, I do love reading actual articles about other teams, but still would not comment on them except maybe to friends or family in conversations.

The easiest job on earth must be a sports writer. You just write a little column every day or two and quote somebody and then let two hundred morons comment. Simply amazing. What do these guys do from 8:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon like most people? I could write a column in ten minutes. Then what?

On a positive note. It sounds as if Big Joe T has these young men too tired to get into trouble. Anyone notice how quiet the sirens have been lately? I listened to C. Robinson say that he increased his max on squats from 375 to over 500 since the bowl game. He also said he has been spending his spare time in CKO’s film room studying. Also, Aaron Murray says he and the receivers have been working together on timing in their spare time. It sounds like some of these Younger guys are shaping into real leaders and our guys really did not like the 6-7 season last year. There is a fire burning in these guys that did not seem present last year. I hope it burns out of control into the heart of September. Go Dawgs!!

Perno needs to go. Guy is the most classless pompous arrogant a hole on the planet. What coach talks like that about another kid on opposing team and casts full judgement on his players?…and to the media none the less! Our new AD needs a serious sit down with Perno. You never belittle another players ability to anyone. And never in the press where people see that you may not be the kind of coach we thought you were. I don’t know this guy but what he said is a first for me in sports and shows no concern for the feelings of his opponent. And he got waxed by Furman, so keep your mouth shut.

Richt wouldn’t know greatness in running backs if it hit him. Washaun Ealey ain’t already great? What about his 5.5 yard per carry average and 1 td per 20 carries–both matching Herschel Walker? What about Ealey’s 100% win record when Ealey gets 25 carries or 100 yards–when the team turns to Ealey to win the game, Ealey wins it every time. What about Ealey averaging 6.6 yards per carry in the 4th quarter versus Ingram’s 3.6 ypc?

Murray making jokes about his decision to play soccer instead of work out and put the whole season at risk? Grantham better do something, because he lost 3 linebackers, and teams will run the gut on him since he couldn’t stop the run last year. I’m not sure Ogletree at LB is the answer, I doubt it, I think it’s more scheme than anything. Hopefully Georgia will run the zone blitz on 3rd and long this season. Grantham really stinks on 3rd down.

Murray should have been punished! The players do need to win the 4th quarter. When is MR going to have the players fired up for the 1st QUARTER? The team is always playing catch up to another team. When will MR learn to control the clock after the team has a good lead? When is the team going to put the easy teams away, instead of struggling? Boise is a great team! S.C. is a great team! FB position is going to be a bad problem this year. This offense depends on a good FB. MR had to learn to fill positions that are needed. MR needs to learn it starts in the TRENCHES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!I support our coach! MR had to buckle down this year. OR ELSE! I believe he is putting together something great. I hope it is not to late for our COACH!

Good thing Richt’s still touting the flawed “win the 4th quarter” angle. The truth is, Georgia’s game were all lost in the first quarter. Go back and look, anytime the other team scored on Georgia first, Georgia lost, all 7 games. This is one of those MANY dumb things Richt teaches that don’t correlate with winning. Win the 4th? Nope, try winning the 1st.

there are three kinds of lies. 1. lies, 2. damn lies, and 3. statistics.

A few salient comments:

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last five BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. During that period, UGA did not even win its SEC division.

5. Red panties.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?
