Washaun Ealey still looks to get valuable playing time for the Dogs. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Thank goodness “indefinite” turned out to mean less than three weeks when it came to Washaun Ealey’s suspension. Now let’s just hope that this very public dressing-down got Ealey’s attention and he continues to “take care of his business” in what Mark Richt calls “the Georgia way.”

Because despite having the future star lined up in Isaiah Crowell, the Dogs very much need Ealey on their roster this season.

The most obvious reason is because you can never have too many tailbacks, as Ray Goff learned during the nightmare season of 1995 that ended his coaching career, when he went through half a dozen backs because of a ridiculous string of injuries. Crowell missed games in high school due to injury, so even if he does emulate Marcus Lattimore and surge to the top of the depth chart right away, having an experienced, talented (albeit underperforming) junior like Ealey next in line is a big plus.

Also, since very few backs these days carry the ball anywhere near as many times per game as in the Herschel Walker era, both Crowell and Ealey are likely to get plenty of playing time. And it’s going to take a while for Crowell to master everything a back needs to do in Mike Bobo’s offense, especially the blocking responsibilities.

But most importantly, as I noted when Ealey’s suspension was first announced, Crowell needs to earn the starting job through competition. It will make him a better back if he has to work hard for that status. It also will give him a better chance of achieving the goals he brashly stated last week of wanting to be a freshman All-American who runs “for more than 1,000 yards.”

And, of course, it will make Georgia a better team. Which is what this is all about.

So welcome back, Washaun. And please try hard to keep doing things the “Georgia way.”

Good question. Assuming he manages to stay academically eligible and doesn’t suffer any more suspensions or injuries, Caleb King no doubt will be needed, too. He’s certainly the best blocker of the tailbacks.

If the S&C program does not produce results and the team does not buy in to the new discipline approach, none of this will matter. We will go 6-6 again and a whole new staff will start 2012.

If the S&C program works and the kids do what they are told, UGA can win 9 or 10 games and Richt will have fought off the demons for awhile.

My hope is that Malcome is the real deal and Crowell and him can share reps and Ealey and King work hard but can’t beat the other 2 out.

I am really unsure why the Washaun Ealey “saga” was ever covered by the media.

Can you imagine 20 or 30 years ago, the media deciding they wanted to cover a story of “Player misses punishment run. In trouble with coach”

The developments with Ealey are a prime example of the “Must know this second” media available to the world.

I obviously enjoy reading blogs (I am here right now aren’t I?), but blogs and social media has really made what used to be a non-story into an all out “crisis” in today’s world.

Good luck Ealey. Hope you learned some kind of lesson this past month. We need you this Fall and next. GO DAWGS!!!!!

Ealey has the potential to have a huge year. Remember the talk this time one year ago? A lot of folks had Ealey slated as the #2 back in the conference behind Ingram. I certainly agree that he grossly underperformed last year, but i really liked the way he ran the ball as a freshman when he was #4 on the depth chart. Hopefully the suspension and additional competition from Crowell and Malcome will help him find that hunger that made him a great back 2 years ago…and a little blocking could help as well. Go dawgs!

I for one hate the fact that Ealey is back on this team. How very quickly we forget he was a large part of the debacle last year with his attitude and just being a troublemaker in general. I would rather go into the season without him and caleb and take our chances….their attitudes have been like a cancer on this team…..funny now that he wants to do things the Georgia way now that someone is here that is head and shoulders above him in morals and they way he conducts himself. I am afraid if ealey stays- we will have the same problems….attitude…lack of drive…lack of caring……oh well….

His punishment was a wake up call just like Ealeys’. Excellent points all, Bill.

From a strictly factual or Objective viewpoint, we need him to carry the football. Crowell is not going to come in a do it all (if any….. that’s yet to be a reality). Even if Crowell is all we hoped, Somebody else is still going to have to be in the mix. You have to be 3 deep.

From a strictly Subjective viewpoint, the idea you put forth as giving Crowell a goal of earning something seems very important to me.

From a half objective/half subjective standpoint………….I still believe that Ealey has some good games in him. Factually, he has had some in the past. Rationally, a player is going to better in his 3rd year, especially if he can avoid the issues he had in his second one. Wishfully, for him and the team, he needs to.

And maybe CMR is getting back in charge of the team after letting the 18 to 22 year old run it for the last few years. Look’s like Tereshinski and Bulter’s OLD SCHOOL attitude will win out.
I hope that we are very successful this year let’s say 10-3 or better , because if this new attitude win’s out CMR will get a 3 year extension and the vote of confidence from the AD and BOARD that we need in Bulldawg Nation . I am not sure why Ealey has such a bad image?? He made a single mistake in one of the most frustrating stretched on bonehead decisions by a bunch of kids in the program, and all of a sudden the haters want to paint him as the nucleus of all UGA’s problems.

“Missing a punishment run”….. I am willing to bet a similar incident has taken place in EVERY college football program within the last 6 months. The only difference here is the media decided to get involved because it’s UGA and the ajc LOVES, LOVES, LOVES negative stories coming out of Athens. Ealey is a very good back that UGA needs in the fall. He has led the Dawgs in rushing in both years he has played. As a freshman, he did not play in the first five games and still finished as the team’s leading rusher. If he were to improve his blocking and ball security, he could become one of UGA’s all time best.

Is Mark Richt more concerned about his job than his players doing right? No one knows for sure. Three weeks is certainly a minor suspension when nothing is really going on. What Ealey had to do behind the scenes to prove he was repentant, no one knows either. The lack of discipline was the root cause of last year’s failure. Discipline on the field is learned by being disciplined off the field. Knowing your head coach will not tolerate bad behavior certainly keeps kids in line. It’s up to Richt to prove that this team has been instilled with discipline and that NO ONE PLAYER is bigger than the team. If he fails to do that again this year, Richt will become the former Georgia head coach.

Don’t worry other people see the whole story too. A drunken techie baseball player endangering others as he skids from one bar to the next barely rates a mention by the ATLANTA newspaper. The guy refuses to be tested which more than likely means he was on other drugs as well.

Since the out of contol program at the north avenue thug school has no rules against DUI’s the criminal is given a slap on the wrist 1 game suspension.

The same thing happening in Athens would result in at least a month of blogs from the ajc.

By his public statement last week that he sees himself as a freshman All-American and will gain 1000 yards, he comes off as being full of himself. I’m glad Ealey is back on the team. I hope Caleb is still a member in good standing. I would love to see these two guys have great years and for both to have learned a lesson in how to conduct themselves off the field. CMR has suspended both for behavior that was not illegal or against the policies of the University. It was CMR’s decision and I think that is impressive. I want them to be successful UGA athletes, but even more, I want to see them become good men. And I think that is what CMR is trying to do with these young men. CMR is a good coach and a good man. So, hate on if that makes you feel good. I won’t.

off topic but interesting stats

March 1st, 2011
5:02 pm

“This year, Auburn joined the 700+ win club. They are the 13th program to win
700 or more games.
took the 13 members of the 700-win club and looked at their performance
against the Top 30 programs on the All-Time Wins list, as well as their
performance against each other.
One of my favorite things to do with this info is to see what the
all-time numbers would look like if the competition had been more even. For
example, Auburn has played 597 games against Top 30 programs. Ohio State has
played 304. USC has played 361. Georgia has played 598. See, when you’re
Auburn or Georgia, and you’ve played hundreds more games against top programs, it
obviously effects your winning % and your overall win total.
For today, I thought I’d show the 13 members of the 700-win club and what
their numbers look like against the Top 30 programs on the All-Time Wins List.”
MOST GAMES vs TOP 30 PROGRAMS
1. 598 – Georgia
2. 597 – Auburn
3. 528 – Alabama
4. 445 – LSU
5. 437 – Texas
6. 417 – Tennessee
7. 392 – Notre Dame
8. 382 – Penn State
9. 381 – Oklahoma
10. 366 – Nebraska
11. 361 – USC
12. 326 – Michigan
13. 304 – Ohio State
MOST WINS vs TOP 30 PROGRAMS
1. 305 – Auburn
2. 304 – Georgia
2. 304 – Alabama
4. 266 – Texas
5. 243 – Notre Dame
6. 223 – Penn State
7. 213 – Tennessee
8. 211 – USC
9. 207 – LSU
10. 206 – Oklahoma
11. 204 – Michigan
12. 180 – Nebraska
13. 173 – Ohio State
This is a good one.
This is a list of the percantage of a program’s total games played against Top 30 programs.
For example, Oklahoma has played a total of 1169 games, 381 of which were against Top
30 programs. That’s 32.6%.
1. 51.6% – Auburn
2. 50.3% – Georgia
3. 45.4% – Alabama
4. 38.5% – LSU
5. 36.0 % – Texas
6. 35.2% – Tennessee
7. 33.2% – Notre Dame
8. 32.6% – Oklahoma
9. 31.8% – USC
10. 31.3% – Penn State
11. 29.7% – Nebraska
12. 26.5% – Michigan
13. 25.5% – Ohio State
This list is even better. It’s a list of the percentage of a programs’ wins that have
come against Top 30 programs.
For example, Oklahoma has 809 wins, and 206 of those have come against Top 30 programs.
That’s 25.5%.
1. 43.0% – Auburn
2. 41.2% – Georgia
3. 37.9% – Alabama
4. 31.3% – Texas
5. 28.8% – Notre Dame
6. 28.7% – LSU
7. 27.4% – USC
8. 27.2% – Penn State
9. 27.0% – Tennessee
10. 25.5% Oklahoma
11. 23.1% – Michigan
12. 21.3% – Nebraska
13. 20.8% – Ohio State
That’s pretty insane if you think about it. Over 50% of all of GEORGIA’s
games have been played against programs in the All-Time Top 30. Even more
impressive is that 41.2% of all the wins we’ve ever had have come against
programs in the Top 30.
It’s no wonder Michigan has racked up 880+ wins, when less than 27% of their
games have come against Top 30 programs..

Won’t matter who’s carrying the rock if we don’t start stopping the other team on 3rd down and the predictable play calling on offense continues.

Mark (another one)

March 1st, 2011
5:41 pm

The best thing for the running back position is competition. Thomas, Ealey and King are the returning players, with Malcome and Crowell fighting for time. At the end of the day, the best should play. Also, having some vets around may help the young guys learn. Some learn well from playbooks, but some learn by watching others in practice. If Crowell or Malcome wins the starting position, great. Let’s see some competition.

Thomas is the one we often forget. His size works against him but he works hard and knows the assignments. It would seem he would be idle as a change of pace back. If not, let him try shifting to a slot and get him into the passing offense against a linebacker. He seems to be able ot make people miss in the open field, so get him out there.

I hear the complaint that if we don’t run Thomas that they other team will know when he is in that he is going to run a route. Yet everytime we brought Brandon Smith in as a receiver, we ran a reverse. The point is to run the offense and make the other team stop you.

AltamahaDawg

One thing for sure. Ealey can certainly serve as a good example, and be able to talk to Crowell about what its like to have high expectation placed upon you, learning to deal with whatever fall from grace is out of your control, and how to avoid self-inflicting damage that is in your control.

AltamahaDawg

Crowell’s job is to allow for MORE predictable playcalling. If less predictable was the answer, then every OC in the country could put up 40 ppg. It’s executing the very predicatable playcalling that seperate the good teams from the bad.

The Georgia Way.

What is that? Break NCAA rules like AJ Green did so Richt can try and get them shortened? Not work out like AJ Green didn’t add pounds and didn’t get punishment runs for it?

The Georgia Way is taking care of Richt’s preferred starters.

Murray committed 4 turnovers against Florida, doesn’t get benched, Ealey commits 1, and Richt benches him.

Murray, 4 turnovers without getting benched must be The Georgia Way too. Murray ain’t adding pounds on from working out like Ealey & Lemay has either. But Murray gets a pass because Murray not working out hard is The Georgia Way.

Richt’s in yet ANOTHER period of decay and decline, much like his 2002-2006 4 years of decline phase.

Richt’s 2nd period of decay started in 2008, where he decreased his wins from 11 in 2007, to 10 in 2008. Unable to correct course, the decay continued to worsen as Richt slid down to just 8 wins in 2009 with Joe Cox. Clueless about solutions, Richt descended into deeper decay in 2010, winning just 6 games, without beating a winning team all season, and losing to both Colorado & a Conference USA team in the Bowl game.

J Fan

March 2nd, 2011

When Richt gets frustrated with his incompetence and decay, and all efforts and all plans to stop his get less wins than the year before trend, when they all fail, 7 out of the last 8 seasons to increase his win total over the previous season, Richt takes his anger out on an 18 -20 year old scapegoat. In 2009, Zach Mettenberger was Richt’s target. Obviously, Mettenberger was quickly offered scholarships by Alabama & LSU, and never got jail time, so Richt over-reacted by kicking Mettenberger off the team. In 2010, Richt has clearly gone after Ealey time and again. Richt’s never even said why he suspended Ealey for 3 weeks this time. It’s widely believed the reason Richt cited, (Ealey not giving 100% in the work out room by videotape in Joe Terishinki’s opinion) is felt by teammates and ex-teammates to be absurd given AJ Green’s & Aaron Murray’s lack of progress there were allowed without punishment runs.

Like they said, you can never have too many running backs…those that can perform that is. Ealey and King, and the rest need to come into Spring practice and this Summer determined to ‘win the position’…to show the rest of the team that while they’re all teammates, each one has got to do their very best or they won’t be teammates for long. And I’m still wondering if one or more of those big and fast WRs we signed in this year’s class might not be candidates at RB.

Remember, even Herschel didn’t start the first game of his freshman year…finished it pretty good, but didn’t start…and as for that SC freshman ‘phenom’, FSU showed the way to handle Mr. Lattimore…I mean when he gets knocked out of a game with a hit that a hockey player wouldn’t even have missed a shift on the ice, then you’ve got to wonder, ‘how tough is he really?’

Truth is, Murray was not strong enough, he got sacked 24 times, couldn’t fight off sacks. Could be due to his small stature too, he is quite short.

Murray also was ranked #119 in passing accuracy, and #65 in passing efficiency in the 4th quarter, he got tired, due to terrible conditioning, and the team suffered many 4th quarter losses.

Murray only scored 4 of his 24 td’s in the 4th quarter. Another sign of poor strength & conditioning.

Ealey averaged 6.6 yards per carry in the 4th quarter, compared to guys like Bama’s Ingram who averaged 3.6 ypc in the 4th quarter.

Ealey’s 4 4th quarter td’s ranked him #3 in the NCAA among running backs.

Don’t you love how some folks tell Richt how HE must administer his OWN punishment to a player that broke HIS rules, and how HE can’t determine when HE decides HIS message has been received? Actually it wasn’t even a broken rule. It was just not doing things the way HE wanted them done. Whatever HE determines that means.

It’s an in-house matter. It’s an in house solution. Richt didn’t even have to tell you ladies about it. Not eating your broccoli is not against the law. It’s not against the student handbook. There IS NO set punishment for that. He handled it.

I don’t think Crowell will even be better than 3rd string, King’s a much better runner and blocker, and Ealey is super productive and has a swag that UGA desperately needs.

What does it matter if Ealey is back? Dawgs are a terrible team that just went 6-7 and lost their best player since Herschel. 5-7 and no bowl. Stick a fork in Mark Richt. He’s done.

First. let me say I hope Crowell ends up breaking every record Hershel ever set, and helps us play in three NC games and wins three Heisman trophies. However, let’s not forget that Caleb was the top HS rb in the nation, and Washaun was in the top 5 or so at rb in the nation as well. It takes more than talent at the high school level to become a big time collegiate player. Good luck to the young man, and good luck to Ealey and all of the rest of the Dogs in 2011 and beyond. Work, work, work. There is NO substitute.

All the talk of the running backs attitudes and being team players is interesting. Unless the O line can be brought up to SEC standards the running game will bring us another 6 or 7 win season. Crowell is an unknown who has an awful taste in ballcaps.

Athdof,

I agree 100% with you. It does take a lot of work to get solid as a team and individual. It starts in the weight room as well as studying your playbook so you know what you are doing out there. Hopefully, after last season, the players realize, winning is tough if you are not prepared. I hope Ealey has decided to get with the program. It isn’t exactly fair to expect Crowell, to just start at the college level and carry 40% of the offense. His job and any of the running backs will be a lot easier though if our O line plays better this year. I think the defense will be OK this year, but O line is the key to putting up some points on the board. Murray, will have a good year I believe and I still believe that the offense will be better without A J because we will not just think of him as the key to the offense.

GOOOOOOOO DAWGSSSSSSSSS

I find it facinating that Jawja fans are pinning their hopes on a oft-injured running back who quit on his team in the state semi-finals against a mostly white north Georgia high school team. You guys are desperate.

Ealey will be needed for depth if nothing else. Kid has talent but so far has not lived up to his billing which is true for a lot of HS kids.

“WDE that article was written By Nathan Deal (Auburn Featured Columnist) so its as slanted as the original statement…deep breath brother we are not out of the woods yet.’

Mark Bradley has a column up right now, Updyker. No, you’re not out of the woods because your program is on probation for another year.

“But it ain’t over till the Fat Lady quits singing .’

Why bring your inbred wife into this?

Hey WDE,

I thought you NEVER picked fights or started any crap on these blogs?

Also, what about your running back getting kicked off the team?

Has Chizik lost control?
Has he gone soft?
Is the first of many arrests?
Is Ohio state’s Fulmer Cup victory for 2011 in jeopardy?

Because Uga didnt finish in the top 25 ranking in football related polls. Otherwise its right up there in this police records. My problem with that list is that if aught to be “serious crimes, and actual convictions”. Having a messed up mjiddle name, or a speeding ticket shouldn’t be considered.
