A.J. Green makes a leaping catch for a first down in the 2009 game against South Carolina in Athens. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Amid speculation A.J. Green might be the top pick in this year’s NFL draft, our enterprising Web folks put up a photo gallery looking at candidates for the honor of best receiver in UGA history.
That’s a subject we’ve dealt with here before. Just before Christmas, I wrote that A.J. is, hands down, the best receiver I’ve ever seen play for Georgia, thanks to those circus catches, his running after the catch and, most importantly, his ability to go up high in double or triple coverage and still snag the ball in a clutch situation.
A couple of years ago, I raised the question of who was the Dogs’ all-time best receiver and threw out quite a few names, including Jimmy Orr from the Wally Butts era, Pat Hodgson, Charlie Whittemore and Lindsay Scott from the Vince Dooley years, Andre Hastings and Brice Hunter from Ray Goff’s tenure, Hines Ward from the Jim Donnan years, Terrence Edwards under Donnan and Mark Richt, and Reggie Brown, Mohamed Massaquoi and Green from the Richt era.

Do Blawg readers still think Hines Ward is UGA's all-time best? (Associated Press)
At the time, I said if I had to narrow that list down, I’d have Orr, Hastings, Ward, Edwards (even with that infamous drop against Florida), Scott (for the most important reception in Bulldog history) and Massaquoi, and based on just his freshman year at the time I said I thought Green probably would top the list before his career was done.
In a poll at that time, 46 percent of Junkyard Blawg readers voted Ward the all-time best receiver, followed by Scott (13 percent), Edwards (11 percent), Hastings (10 percent), young A.J. (10 percent), Orr (7 percent) and Massaquoi (3 percent).
Vote in the poll and also feel free to sound off in the comments on Green’s place among the Dogs’ all-time greats.

Re Lindsay Scott. He would be at o nearthe top of the list even with out the GA-FL game.
He was a very talented and productive WR for UGA and would have had a great NFL career IMO had he not had off field problems.
AJ is the most Talented WR IMO and the best WR to have played for UGA but Lindsay was the most valuable WR to play for UGA handds down. I wish AJ had played on a team w the dedication that LS played for, but unfortunalty, AJ, like several other great talents we have had in recent years were just that: “Great Talents on talented underr achieving teams”. AJ, to his credit was able to rise above the relative mediocrity that has been ouur progam since 1 or 2 (max) since BVG left

I voted for AJ because he is the best pure WR I have seen in college football. He has it all, great hands, size, and speed. With that being said, Hines Ward was the better football player. Ward was and is more physical and still has a knack for getting open that you see very rarely. Hines has bailed out so many QBs in his career both in college and the pros and he is still the go to guy when Big Ben is in trouble. Let’s not forget the year that Hines had to play WR, RB, and QB at various times because of injuries. Talk about carrying the team! If I had to start a team now AJ might be my first pick but I would surely love to have Ward on my team.
AJ blocked a field goal.

Did you just HATE on Calvin Johnson or what. CJ makes AJ look like a lil League player. Like Fatt Matt Calvin got stuck in Detroit. AJ ain’t got crap on Calvin. Do you really think AJ GREEN is in the same league with Crabtree too? HAHAHAHHA. Go cry and love on the newest DEAD Uga. AJ Green would make a nice set of bones for the Voodoo princess after he crosses the middle in the NFL.
UGA comes in dead last

UGA has had some fantastic receivers over the years but my favorite was Hines Ward even though that was not his primary position. He could play almost any position. QB, WR, RB, CB etc. Plus, he could block and return punts.
How did he NOT win the Heisman?

Why do I hate on Calvin Johnson? I have posted many times on these blogs and I don’t remember saying any critical of Johnson. I was not aware the topic was GT WRs. I think Calvin Johnson is an excellent athlete but the only times I watched him play was against UGA and he didn’t take over those games. As a matter of fact Paul Oliver pretty much shut him down. I think that was as much due to the fact that Tech did not have the QB to get him the ball and UGA’s pass rush as anything. I abhor trashing the players that bust their butts on the field Sir, and I do not attack kids, no matter what colors they wear.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking three years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 25 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.
