Don’t blame fandom for Toomer’s Corner oaks poisoning
Let's keep the blame for the poisoning of the Toomer's Corner oaks where it belongs. (Associated Press)
The temptation among some in this whole sorry Toomer’s Corner oaks affair is to shake their heads and say, “Those crazy Alabama fans,” or huff and puff about SEC football and its fans being out of control.
But it’s patently unfair to take the actions of one individual who uses his fandom for a college football program as an excuse for destructive behavior and lay them at the feet of the school or blame the intensity of big-time college football. Just as it makes no sense to take anyone who commits a shocking crime and somehow attribute it to his race or religion or make the leap to blaming it on society in general.
Remember the guy who threw security into a tizzy and briefly shut down the Atlanta airport a few years back by running down the “up” escalator, and how some idiots tried to use it as an opportunity to bash the University of Georgia simply because he was a Dogs fan on his way to a game?
That was illogical and unfair, and so is blaming the University of Alabama, Crimson Tide fandom, the Alabama-Auburn rivalry, the SEC or college football in general for the poisoning of the oaks.
I like the way the Senator put it at Get the Picture (though I have to sanitize it for a family newspaper’s audience): Sometimes people behave like complete [jerks] simply because they’re complete [jerks].
IT’S NOT TOO LATE…
I speculated here a while back that for those young Dogs fans who haven’t been able to afford the minimum “buy-in” level of a Hartman Fund contribution to get season tickets, the aftermath of a disappointing season might make this the year to make the move.
And, indeed, it looks like donations to the Hartman Fund, aka the Bulldog Club — which entitle the donor to buy season tickets — must be flagging this year. The donation deadline was Tuesday, and yet two days after that a notice was put up on Georgiadogs.com that “If you have not yet made your 2011 contribution, please donate today to ensure you receive season ticket priority for the 2011 season.”
In other words, the deadline has passed but they’re still soliciting donations.
Even if you don’t want to buy season tickets for 2011, a donation of at least $100 to the Hartman Fund makes you eligible to request tickets to the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome between the Dogs and Boise State.

Unfortunately the desire to use sad incidents as an excuse to even personal or political scores or to advance an agenda is all too common. It was only last month that the tragic murder of 6 people in Tucson was used as an excuse to attack political enemies, even though no connection was found. For some reason people have a hard time grasping the concept that there are loony, dangerous people out there. Not everything is a conspiracy or evidence of a corrupt culture.

Love the inbread comment(s). I’ve also seen imbred – which I believe is a cheese. Together, they sound yummy but I think the insult – if that’s what you’re aiming for – is ‘inbred’. Either way … I’m Alabama alumni and live far away these days. I have Auburn fans in my family and love them just the same – kind of like you love a 3-legged dog whose tongue is always hanging out of his mouth and smells funny. The guy who poisoned these trees is a full on jackass. I don’t care which team he’s a fan of – if he’s actually a fan of anything. He’s not a kid, and has worked in law enforcement and should have, at some point along the way, figured out consequences. What he did is mean spirited and shameful on every level. I hope these trees beat the odds and live at least another 130 years. If they don’t, then maybe new ones can be planted in remembrance of this tradition. THey should reach maturity by the time Auburn wins another championship … wink wink nudge nudge.

Admittably, some of the personal attacks stretch my patience a bit, but the majority of these blogs on here, no matter what school’s fan writes them, are darn funny. Page 1 of these blogs usually never ends on a postivie note due to some blogger from another school, with no reason to be even commenting on it, has interjected his sick attempt at humor, or nastiness. From page two on, usually resembles a school yard fight on an elementary school playground.
I am going to try and archive most of these comments, write a book, and title it, “How adults settle arguements and the meaningful comments they make”

WOW! I just called the ticket office and to get tickets to the UGA vs UF game a min.donation is $5,000, plus the ticket price of either $40 or $70 depending on where you sit!!!!! I can usually go for the isolated stalker on the grassy knoll theory; however I can’t help but remember when Alabama played Michicgan during the bowl season and a bunch of Bama fans had made signs denigrating and “dissing” Auburn, (one sign said “Roll Ducks Roll”). I truly don’t understand why Bama was so mad. Auburn beat them fair and square in the Iron Bowl and deserved their shot at the Championship game against the Ducks. And anyway, to me, they should’ve been happy that their state AND their conference would be represented AGAIN in the BCS championship game. I’m thinking it’s not a “lone crazy” but perhaps a whole town of “crazies”.

It’s kinda hard to not blame fandom. Yes this is one fan that went way too far but is anyone really surprised by this? A lot of football fans in the south are borderline maniacs. It’s embarrassing and scary at times. I have seen frat boys try to pick fights with children, and berate women. I have seen countless fights that started for basically no reason. The old days of fun rivalries and funny pranks are over. The news days of complete hatred are here. Not all fans are like this but the number is certainly growing large as the years go along.

I have to say You Dawgs know I am not DAWG FAN lover. I would never consider driving to Savannah an try to give antifreeze to an Uga???. I would hope no UGA fan would try to Damage the Ramblin Wreck, but that is why the mascots are so protected. GT hides the Wreck for fear of damage and Sonny keeps the Ugas safe. The problem that happened here is that the Trees are in a Public area and this fool was allowed to visit like anybody in town. I don’t tink any USC fan tried to burn down the ESSO club. Now in DIXIE the Black Athlete is put on a PLATFORM not an Ole Oak tree. Times have changed. Maybe not as fast as it should have, but the SEC schools and white fans love to cheer black athletes and try to help them get college degrees. Don’t paint with such a BROAD BRUSH. Notre Dame graduates 98% of their black athletes, but they only have around 200 Black Athletes. GT graduates only 48% but that is 390+ Black Athletes ad UGA does a few more too. % is a number of the whole but it is not the only measure. Only in Alabama… Does passion run so deep between one university with two mascots and another with (count them) three mascots. One mascot is not enough when we are talking football in Alabama. So, the Sainted coach of the first university dies, and the second university celebrates by throwing toilet paper in their own trees so their own people have to clean it. Go figure. Understandibly, the first university (the one with two mascots) is upset by this. I’m guessing so is the guy who had to clean up the toilet paper.
Years later, the first university loses to the second university in a football game. This is particularly upsetting because the first university pays its coach $539 million a year which is a lot more than the second university (the one with three mascots) pays its quarterback. A fan of the first university then responds by killing trees, because that is, I guess, just what you do in Alabama when your team loses. He then calls a radio station to brag about it, provides his name and number and exactly how he committed the crime, and the only one surprised when the police call him about it is him. He even ends his call with a cheer for the first university, “Roll D@mn Tide,” which happens to be one of their two mascots.

After reading blog comments from fans from Alabama and Georgia regarding Auburn and Cam Newton, I’m surprised that they didn’t get together to poison the trees. Maybe it would be a good idea to tone down the hate, but it won’t happen. I remember going to Auburn in the middle of the night and “removing” items from our corresponding frat house and returning them after our game on Saturday. We didn’t go to burn the house down or kill the trees or kill the bulldog at GA. It’s a football game after all. Permanent damage or cruelty to animals is stupid.

Being from the North I have no real college allegiance which gives me a level of objectivity. I count among my close friends, Dawgs, Gators, Tides ??, Tigers, Vols, etc. Most of whom are avid but gracious (though that graciousness has on occasion been tested by beverage) and while I appreciate the avid fan, I have observed at least as much that is so overblown as to go flying by avid and cruising through sad, ironically the saddest, meaning there life revolves around such a voyeristic pastime, are those who have never attended the college that evokes that passion (or compulsion) and ALL are rife with absolute idiots. ml who above blamed those who look on and say nothing is 100% right. Trust me, as much as I despise Bama, I have a lot of respect for the football program. I just read where Nick Saban and the U of Alabama issued an apology to Auburn. To me, it’s just lame. U of Alabama had NOTHING to do with the trees and that guy was a not a graduate of U of Alabama.

USAF, 1968, Master Sergeant, Amarillo Texas, when it was a basic training base. Tours of duty in Colorado, North Dakota, DaNang, RVN, Washington D.C., Montgomery Alabama, Dover Delaware, Sembach Germany, Exmouth, Western Australia, Chanute Air Base, Ill. 11 permanent base changes and 6 tdy’s.
I could list my decorations if you need them, but I am not sure you would know what most of them mean since they had something to do with valor, meritorious service, and such.

It is not just a tree, it is a symbol. Just like Uga being UGA’s mascot, is for UGA fans. For something to be destroyed over a darn football game, that means so much more than just a football game is sick. Not something anybody should be proud to have been done, by any fan in the name of any school. I wonder if the man is mentally sick, or maybe has a problem with alcohol. Either way, he is a sick puppy.
Never the less, there are a lot of people on here, that take things too personal and then resort to attacks on a personal level. I enjoy the banter sometimes, but get tired of the real nasty crap. I even get mad at myself, for getting caught up in it most of the time. I do however, not tolerate attacks on myself and I think if people would just agree to disagree, instead of making nasty comments about other people and their schools they support, these blogs could be informative and maybe pretty interesting. Has anybody on this blog, really tried to discuss this guys real problem that poisoned the tree? Do you think he had a deep mental problem, or some kind of deep obsession with Alabama, since he named his kids, with names associated with UA. Anybody a shrink or has anybody taken any courses on here that might know what kind of disorder that could be? He went way past the rabid fan level. All I have seen so far, is a lot of talk about each teams fans on here, but little talk about what caused this dude to go off the deep end. The junkyard blog, states Don’t Blame fandom, but that is exactly what went on in this blog. This is a SEC blog, not a UGA, Auburn or Alabama fan blog.

Poisoning the oak trees is criminal and the guy should get what he deserves. But I’ve always wondered about the Auburn tradition of rolling the trees, especially when they win. Where I come from rolling a tree, a house, a lawn is considered defamatory behavior, not to be confused with a celebration. Do those folks at Auburn know what toilet paper is for?

Well, football will start up again in September and until then, everybody have fun now, ya hear. Insult each other, each others school, but I think I am gonna enjoy my second favorite sport. NASCAR is on, and that substains my sport interest until football starts back up for real.

Bill, you are right about it being unfair to blame all Bama fans for Treegate..but my time in Dothan told me one thing..there is some serious hatin’ going on over there..and I promise you well over half of the Bama fans, if not 3/4..are tickled pink at this event and quietly condone it,even tho they wont admit it. What we call fringe fans, Bama and Auburn call normal fans. I think its because what the hell else is there to do in that God forsaken state? I once saw that there were over 1 million people in Alabama living in mobile homes. There are only about 4 million people living in the whole state ..think about that one. That would be like metro Atlanta having everyone in Fulton Co living in a trailer.

Bill, I don’t want to blame the whole Bama fan base but when I think of bamafan the first thought always comes back to how they treated Bill Curry. Rocks through his window, death threats to his wife and children, for sale signs stuck in his yard. I’ve seen first hand, every school has a mixture of classy and gracious fans and we all have our morons. the morons are usually the younger crowd, students etc.. This guy was how old??? As the guy who lived in bama for a year said, they are a different breed over there!!

I have been following AJC sport’s blog’s for about a year now and I vote this one as the most worthless topic on the sport’s bog’s at AJC. It was OK to bring this topic up but you should have done it mid week and it should have stayed up for one 2 or 3 hour period one morning and then taken off. You have 8 pages of Auburn and Alabama fan’s saying absolutely nothing. I read about 2 or 3 comment’s and then scanned the other’s and no more than half a dozen stayed on topic or they were completely worthless.
A lot of Georgian’s like to follow sport’s and for you to end the week on something that should have been hashed out in the state of Alabama and in their papers is mind boggling . You are a better reporter in the state of GEORGIA than that.
