Welcome to the Bulldog Nation, Isaiah! (Associated Press)

Welcome to the Bulldog Nation, Isaiah! (Associated Press)

Will Isaiah Crowell start as a freshman and do for the Georgia Bulldogs what Marcus Lattimore did for South Carolina last year?

Or could he wind up as one of those highly touted recruits who never live up to their potential like Jasper Sanks, an earlier five-star running back UGA signed out of Columbus’ Carver High School?

There’s a third scenario, of course. Crowell could wind up as another in a long line of great running backs on mediocre teams. After all, as great as Crowell looks, he still has to run behind mostly the same underperforming offensive line that Washaun Ealey and Caleb King have played with the past couple of seasons. Who knows, maybe the new OL coach or the beefed up conditioning program will make a difference this year.

We have no way of knowing which way Crowell’s career at Georgia  will go, but for today it’s time for big smiles across the Bulldog Nation.

And not just because of the signing of Crowell, of course. He’s part of a recruiting class that Mark Richt says could be his best, with another couple of five-star signees in Ray Drew and Jay Rome and a lot of other exciting talent.

The Dream Team isn’t yet complete, though. Georgia still badly needs big John Jenkins to anchor its defensive line. We won’t find out about that until Saturday.

But let’s be like Scarlett and worry about that tomorrow.

Today, we celebrate!

Great post Bill! Today is a time to celebrate. I didn’t see a recruiting class near this talented a day after the Liberty Bowl. What Richt and this coaching staff has done is impressive. Let’s hope for the best on Saturday with Jenkins, and that our coaching staff can turn those stars to wins!

I don’t see what this is going to do except give the NEXT HC something to work with. Richt has always had talent, and as good as this so-called Dream Team is, Bama and Auburn’s classes are still ranked ahead. saban gets a dream team every year. The difference is he knows what to do with it.

TRUE Dawg fans are well aware this ship will not be completely righted this coming season. We are still going to have some hiccups.

Unfortunately the countless haters, and negative media we get on the ajc, will point to this recruiting class the first time something bad happens this fall.

But people who understand it, know that Mark Richt is doing everything he can. I am much more excited to see the 2012 and 2013 Dawgs than the 2011 Dawgs.

This is a about as good as you could imagine for UGA. If Jenkins signs, this could be a incredible class. Richt has had some really good classes, so for him to say this is his best is a huge compliment. His 2004 and 2006 classes were very good as well.

Great recruiting job!!! Now, it’s time to “coach them up”. Hopefully, Coach Bobo will upgrade his play-calling and in-game adjustments.

* Incomplete pass on 1st down does NOT mandate a run between the tackles on 2nd down.
* Throwing for 220 yards in the 1st half vs. Tech does not explain throwing 5 passes in the 2nd half. Even Coach Richt said we “probably should have thrown more in the 2nd half.”
* Carlton Thomas should never be asked to pound the ball up the middle………puh-LEEEZE!
* Orson Charles should have far more than 2 touches per game.

Yes, we put a lot of points on the board last year. But, we were inept in several games, and almost blew the Tech game by shutting down our offense in the 2nd half. Until our defense becomes strong again, we have to have an explosive offense. This starts with our offensive line, but it also requires an aggressive approach to game plans and play-calling. We should keep our foot on the gas until the game is over. We’ve lacked a killer instinct now for several years. Go DAWGS!! Sign John Jenkins on Saturday!!

We got the one everyone wanted, so that’ s a good thing, but in watching his highlight reels on youtube maybe we should have signed his O-line as it seems every run up the middle he went untouched. Hard to say exactly from highlights what kind of runner he is. He has speed, although he was chased down by some d-backs who had the angle on him a couple of times. But definitely looks quicker than anyone we currently have. Not Percy Harvin or Demps speed. Can’t say he’s a bruiser either as I didn’t see him knock anyone backwards or drag anyone with him for extra yardage(larrimore). Looks like more of a slicing type runner, not a stop and go change of direction guy. A guy who hits the hole at maximum speed and if there is daylight he can take it all the way. Good day for the Bulldog nation.

I stand by my accessment: It’s a good day for UGA and all Dawg fans b/c the NEXT HC will have talent to work with starting in 2012. I want UGA to win as much as anyone, but I have zero confidence in CMR and his staff, and frankly, am not going to set myeslf up to just to be let down when we are 0-2, which is likely. But as i said, get Fridgen…..and then there is hope. All athis excitment about Top Richt signing class. going from 2010 backwards, he has had classes ranked 21,4,5,17,4,4,6,11, and 9. This will not make of big time or save Richt his job. Read the article by the coach of Wisconsin where he talks about coaching and making players better for a program never near the top in recruiting. As Spurrier once commented that he didn’t know what happened to all the top (Georgia) recruits. FUnny how everyone else recruits are as good as avertised and ours don’t pan out. Look it up, we have a stable full of top rb recruits and yet we don’t have a running game. But, all said, we’ll have some great athletes for the new coach in 2012.

I didn’t think recruiting was the problem at UGA. It is a given that every year they will have a great recruiting class. Everybody has been complaining about coaching, especially Richt and Bobo. What has been done about that? Reality hits in 7 months.

I know I am over reacting but, come on, let’s dream a little!!!!!.

UGA does not have to play either of the top 2 teams in the SEC next year (bamer & LSU) and both Auburn and Florida are going to be beatable. LISTEN TO THIS – the two best teams on the schedule next year will be Missy State and Carolina – let me repeat that – Missy State and Carolina!!!!!!! UT, Vandy, UK, tech and Ole Miss are after thoughts and Boise State will be much like the Boise State that came to Athens a few years back touting their quarterback as Heisman material and playing a UGA team that could have easily hung 100 on them if Coach Richt had not been a gentleman.

We will have an All American candidate leading the offense, a boat load of premier red shirts and returning starters galore.

Now we have one of the greatest recruiting classes ever signed at UGA with five star recruits everywhere. I would guess several will be instant starters. Although I feel bad for King and Ealey, I believe they should both continue to get a few carries each game in order to spell “THE BIG BOY”!!!!!!

Assuming we win the SEC, who do you think we will play in Atlanta – bamer or LSU? Both will be tough but we can hang with either. A win there and UGA will almost certainly play for the national championship.

This time next year, when – at the very least – UGA is a 11 game winner and more likely a champion, let’s all meet here again and see who still thinks Coach Richt cannot get the job done!!!!

I watched Crowell on ESPN when his High School played a rival. He looks more like Knowshon than Herschel. He would get hit and spin and pick up more yards. Sure this was high school and not the SEC but he looked like he had something. The desire to get that extra yard or more. We need that.

I don’t expect Crowell to be Herschel and take a ‘79 team and turn it into a ‘80 team. But I think he can help improve our chances at winning the close games.

You know who you are. It’s not pretty, it’s pathetic. It’s not heroic, it’s negative and that’s self-fulfilling. Take your half empty glass off the table and go back to your corner of the bar room.

I can’t figure the logic in these recruiting class rankings. Looking at ESPN’s rankings UGA, who is ranked 6, has more 5,4 and 3 star recruits than Alabma (20 vs. 23), who is ranked 3, and two less than Auburn (25), ranked just ahead of Bama at 2. FL St has the same number of 3,4,5 recruits as Auburn at 23. Florida has only 15, but is only two spots behind UGA. It pretty much looks like a marketing gimmick on the part of the major media (ESPN) and the cottage industry that has sprung up around recruiting. Can someone explain?

Coach Richt came up big, he can write his own salary in 2012 anywhere he wants to coach by pulling this off after a 6-7 season on a small 3 year contract McGarity manufactured “hotseat”. Coach Bobo recruited some big time guys too–top effort by Bobo there. Coach Grantham and his D coaches got the best defensive talent I’ve seen in a decade at UGA, that really fits the 3-4 defense.

The BCS Champions have always had top recruiting classes. Last year Auburn won with a lesser class of talent according to rivals.com’s rankings. Does having the best recruiting class every year Guarantee you’ll win the BCS Championship? No. What about the majority of the time? Yes. Can you look at the past BCS Champions, and say it doesn’t matter? Look at the past five years of every BCS Champion, the majority had better recruiting leading up to their Championship, Auburn being the lone one. The two years that UGA has had the highest recruiting ranking they won the SEC Championship.

Auburn 2010 – 2002 – #4, #19, #20, #7, #10, #13, #21, #11, #8

By the way, speaking of hotseats, after the 6-7 debut as head AD at UGA of the football program, if McGarity goes anything less than 8-5 in 2011, he’;ll get canned. McGarity’s on the hotseat too, mentoring Richt to a 6-7 season ain’t gonna get it there.

This class is AWESOME, and we do have some guys that can make an imediate impact.

Ray Drew – will help soften the loss of Justin Houston

Isaiah Crowell – will hopefully give us that home run back that we can ride. I’m thinking he could be the 2nd coming of Garrison Hearst.

Damian Swann & Nick Marshall – These two could be absolutely HUGE. Early word is they think Swann could come in and compete for a starting corner job and obviously Nick Marshall could as well or at least provide depth. This could allow us to move Branden Smith to offense on a permanent basis and allow him to be used in a Percy Harvin type roll. Marshall could also be used in the wild-dog as Richt alluded to based on his QB experience.

John Jenkins – Is the one that could have the biggest impact though. Not only in his play but the domino effect he could have on defense. Jenkins is a space eater and a natural 3-4 NT. Having him there would allow D.Tyson and A.Jones to move to their natural 3-4 DE position (assuming of course Geathers comes back healthy) What this does is gives us a TRUE 3-4 front. Imagine having JJ in the middle flanked by Tyson and Jones with Drew on the edge to pass rush and Robinson, Samuel and J.Jones in the remaining LB slots. I’d put that front 7 against anyone’s. Then you will get to see how good Granthum is and why we switched to the 3-4.

Gotta feel pretty good about Jenkins as we didn’t offer or pursue anyone else late. Gotta think Jenkins has let all interested parties know his intent.

Exciting time to be a Dawg!!!

On a side note: Congratualations to ALL the young men who signed letters of intent today regardless of what school you signed with. Take advantage of the opportunity that has been given to you not only on the field, but more importantly in the classroom. Ealey has a great ypc average and a great touchdown per carry average but, just seems like at times either Bobo gives up on the run or the fumble thing.
Having that much talent around him should make him hungry though.
The Malcome kid that was shirted is the real deal. He’ll end up making Ealey and all the RB’s work harder for playing time., But i’d say first time Ealey puts the ball on the ground may be his last.

@Terry, Those stats paint a very good picture of how recruiting correlates to winning in the SEC. I agree that Mark Richt has had good recruiting since he’s been at UGA. I think a lot of posters are overlooking the fact that this class is so impressive because it addresses problems that we have in many areas. Past recruiting classes were good but they were largely focused in certain areas. This class covers every single area. With that being said, I think that UGA will surprise a lot of people this year. Also, I’m having a hard time believing that Boise State is as good as they were the last few years. If you go back and check their roster, you will see that they lost a lot of players this year. SC is not unbeatable. That game is always a toss-up. UGA had a down year last year and SC barely beat them even with Lattimore running roughshod over them. If you go back and look at those lost games with an open-mind, you will also notice that some of those games were lost because of one bad play. Without that one play, things could have been very different for UGA. I also think that UGA’s biggest problem was not stopping the run but it was the pass defense that helped to sank this team. Good passing opens up running lanes for the opposing offenses. How many times did we have an offense facing 3rd and long, only to make a long pass down field without one of our defenders anywhere within the lenses of the camera? I think that if we fix the secondary, you will find out that the run defense will fix itself.

Heck, he has had some damn good teams but maybe he lost focus the past two years. I think the AD may have straighten him out and hopefully we will see a different CMR next year. Come on dawgs–lets get behind him–an optimistic and encouraging fan base might do wonders. If this doesn’t work, lets get behind the move to hire Kirby Smart. Coming out from the middle of piles, stopping on a dime, unbelieavable accelleration, faking guys out of their jocks. NOBODY caught him from behind once he got to full speed, NOT ONCE. He was leaving dudes in his rear view mirror. Crowell is unbelievable as a high school runner. Yes, he had some nice holes to run through but there were plenty of examples where he didn’t. Yes, he still has to prove himself at the college level. But there is no question, he is the Real Deal. If you can’t see that then you either saw the wrong video or you just don’t know football.

All you haters need to realize that even though UGA is loaded with talent. They’re not the only SEC loaded w/ talent. FL& LSU have been loaded for some time, & AL & AU have hauled in loaded recruiting classes more so recently. Peoplw are craze when they say Richt can’t coach people up. Someobdy tell me how Stafford can go 1st in the NFL draft if he doesn’t know how to coach. Any team that is loaded w/ what’s deemed as top level recruiting talent…isn’t ever the only school to thaat’s true for. ONly one team can be #1 every yr., & just bc a team has good recruiting classes doesn’t meean they should win National Championships or they’re not a good coach. Richt’s predecessors also reruited top notch talent, & didn’t have near the results that Richt has had. He’ s come close to winning 2 national titles, & I know close doesn’t cut it, but that’s closer than UGA came for a long time before him. If we stick w/ him hten maybe will get one sometime. You can hire any OC you want, and they are always going to favor running the ball on second and long. There is a reason that is predictable..because you see that every Saturday and Sunday. Add in an inexperienced QB who is the one who ultimately decides at the line if that’s the safe thing to do when he doesn’t read anything else, and of course that’s predictable. Same reason we just happen to run the “sprint draw” all the time with Stafford as a Frosh, and oddly it faded away later in his career.

And on that note, predictability is not why UGA was easy to defend, PLAY is why they were easy to defend. It’s not purely coincidental that good teams knew exactly what we were going to do and lesser teams had no idea, is it? Every defensive staff in the nation that has electricity knows what the other team is going to do. I watched a few other SEC team a few times this past season , and could pretty much tell you what they were going to do on down and distance. Some were just better at actually doing it successfully, but it wasn’t from from creativity or fooling anyone. You think Alabama is out there running halfback passes on secong and long?

We can hire a new OC, and there are plenty out there, but they aren’t going to “call” their way into being a better team than they were midweek.

We can certainly find somebody, or help the one we have, prepare the team better midweek. Or in March. That’s the problem. Fix that and even a DA like me could call the play.

You just proved my point about the methane gas. By the way, you might want to check your math. 19 out of 25 Georgia recruits signed for UGA. I realize that would really confuse you, since that is more digits than you have on your two hands, but that’s OK. Go back to your senior year of high school in Alabama, and you might recall, that is where they taught you how to add and subtract.

If Jenkins comes to UGA, he immediately becomes the starter at what can be a high-profile position (NT: Cody, Fairley, Suh).

I’m not sure what the other schools he is looking at are, but I’m not sure anyone can demonstrate a better situation for him. Of course without a stellar NT, our defense may only make modest improvement over last year.

Part of the problem with the offense, “last year”, was inability to execute but I have seen far to many times Bobo strayed away from what was working successfully, everyone would agree I think.

I also think that a specific type game plan, geared toward the opponent we’re playing isn’t utilized. Richt and Bobo were “cerebrally” defeated in 2008 by both Saban and Meyer IMO. We got away very early against Bama with what was working, and didn’t try to stand with them physically. Against UF, Meyer let us “beat ourselves” early while he played a conservative game until some sort of rhythm was established. We played ourselves right out of both of those games “very early”. The offensive game plan was to blame. I think a smart, disciplined, OC would benefit us greatly. I’m all for bring RF on board if it’s doable.
