Mark Richt’s ‘Dream Team’ picks up momentum

Ray Drew is the latest to say he'll join the "Dream Team." (Ray Drew)

Ray Drew is the latest to say he'll join the "Dream Team." (Ray Drew)

Our Chip Towers reports five-star Thomas County Central defensive end Ray Drew announced this morning he’s going to become a Georgia Bulldog.

Perhaps some of those snarky folks who laughed at Mark Richt’s “Dream Team” gambit are taking it somewhat more seriously now.

Snagging Drew is a biggie not just because he’s rated a five-star player, but because Georgia badly needs talent on its defensive line. Now if  UGA can get another stellar DE, Asheville’s Jeoffrey Pagan, who recently decommitted from Clemson and is reportedly favoring the Dogs, plus sign junior college nose guard John Jenkins (who won’t announce until Feb 5), Todd Grantham’s 3-4 will be looking a lot more formidable.

And then, of course, there’s still running back Isaiah Crowell, who’ll make his decision public on signing day on ESPNU.

The Dream Team is far from complete at this point. But it’s closer to reality than many ever thought it would be.

Assuming these guys all sign on the dotted line, is that enough to elevate the Georgia program back to the elite? And can it be done in the 2011 season — in other words, are the Dogs likely to actually get turnaround performances from that many true freshman players this fall against SEC competition? What do you think?

Dream team is the best recruiting class of CMR’s tenure. Many will see the field in 2011. Keep it going. SEC champs THIS YEAR

If Jenkins and Crowell sign then yes UGA can compete, with a 340 pound NG and decent size DEF ends, the run DEF won’t get blown away. Hopefully UGA can add Jenkins, Crowell, Pagan, Richardson, and Turene and close out Richts best class ever. Go DAWGS!

@ Jeff, yes.
We are going to be loaded on the D line if we can add Jenkins.
Look back at last years class and we had 2 4 star DE’s
Add 2 more 4 stars this year and 1 5 star and we are looking at an aggressive rotation on the line and or some hybrid moves of DE’s to OLB a la Justin Houston. This is awesome… 1 down 4 more to go!

Are you serious?

We’re talking in-state kids. They should all be UGA targets every year. Please stop sensationalizing.

Some of these guys are probably ready to play and will make Georgia better. A true freshman can make an impact in the SEC–look at what Lattimore did for SC. My worry is that we’re going to let all this talent go to waste by not using them well and not coaching them up to be the best they can be individually and as a team. It’s all up to the coaches now.

If Georgia gets everybody it is targeting, then I believe we will see a major turn around in 2012. 2011 will still be too early. But it certainly will be better than last year.

Bill, I think the premise for the recruiting blitz this offseason has been “make an immediate impact.” Richt knows he’s on the hot seat, so throw the book at the upcoming season and play the playmakers you are getting. I’m pumped! Looking forward to the Spring Game even more now! GO DAWGS!

GT joe, one bad year is not a bad coach. Nothing You say, 2 SEC titles, a #2 branking nationally, a #3 ranking nationally, and many top 10 finishes! He will cross the NC goal line at some point. I just hope we are not foolish enough to let that happen at another school.

Did I mention he is 9-1 against Yuch er um ….Tech!

UGA fans, what more does CMR need to do to gain your lost respect and admiration? He is on the verge of having his best recruiting class PERIOD!!! Quite a statement considering where we were 1 month ago. He is shutting down the state of GA and doing all the things we want him to do. Now, the most important question, what will he do with these recruits? Will he coach them up or down? My vote is for UP.

Preston

Richt needs to tell every one of his players that they will have to earn their playing time/starting positions. If the true freshman is better than the senior, the freshman starts. PERIOD! That’s how every successful coach operates and CMR should be no different.

Great recruiting class but all those folks saying we’ll be great or elite next year are smoking something funny. History has shown that a recruiting class does not have a great impact their freshman year. We should realistically be looking for marked improvement in 2011 and greater improvement on 2012 IF these guys can be coached up, something which has been suspect for the last few years between the hedges.

Don’t get me wroing, I’m ecstatic that these big names are coming our way but give it time.

Go Dawgs!
