The only football line where UGA rules in SEC: Bottom line

Georgia's defensive line and their offensive brethren got pushed around last season, the new strength coach acknowledges. (The State)

Georgia's defensive line and their offensive brethren got pushed around last season, the new strength coach acknowledges. (The State)

The Dogs’ offensive and defensive lines might have gotten pushed around pretty regularly this past season, but in the most recent financial figures available Georgia’s football program ruled the bottom line in the SEC, according to Forbes magazine.

UGA ranked No. 1 in the conference in football profitability in 2009-2010 according to U.S. Department of Education data, and it wasn’t even close. Georgia’s profit of $52.5 million was $8 more than second-place Florida netted. In fact, Georgia was the second most profitable football program in the country, behind only Texas.

In terms of overall revenue from gate receipts, broadcast revenues, appearance guarantees and options, concessions, and advertising, Alabama ranked tops in the SEC at $71.8 million, with Georgia second at $70.8 million.

But while Alabama was also the top spender in the SEC on grants-in-aid, salaries, travel, equipment, and supplies at $31.1 million, Georgia was only seventh in spending at $18.3 million. Thus, Georgia made more profit by spending less money on its football program than Bama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, South Carolina and even Arkansas!

Forbes notes that Georgia put just 25.8 percent of its football revenue back into the program. Meanwhile, the 2009 BCS champion, Alabama, was putting 43.3 percent back into its program, and the 2010 BCS winner, Auburn, invested 42.2 percent.

Asks Forbes: “Is there perhaps a correlation between this and results on the field? Georgia went 7-5 in 2009 and just 6-6 in 2010. … Take a look at the teams ahead of Georgia in terms of expenses. In 2010, Georgia lost to every team they played who spent more than them in 2009: Florida, Arkansas and South Carolina.”

Ouch.

It’s worth noting here that Georgia’s football program just moved into its plush new digs in the Butts-Mehre building, newly expanded to the tune of $39.5 million. That includes a fancy new weight room to replace the trailers Georgia’s weight program was operating out of the past year and a half.

Let’s hope we see some on-the-field dividends from that investment in the coming season — or UGA may be having to spend some money … to buy out the remainder of Mark Richt’s contract.

Speaking of the weight program, the Macon Telegraph had an interesting interview with new strength coach Joe Tereshinski, in which amid all the typical off-season rah-rah talk of getting tougher he acknowledged the Dogs had been dominated on the lines in recent years. “The film doesn’t lie,” he said. “I’m the video coordinator, I see every play. Yeah, we were not winning the line of scrimmage.”

In reviewing all that game film, Tereshinksi said, he saw “where we were getting beat. I do see where our weaknesses are. And so that’s what we are attacking. We are attacking where we’ve been weak.”

Tereshinski also noted the coming season “is a very critical year for the program, for the University of Georgia. … It is very critical for our coaching staff. We all wanna stay here, we love this, we want to do our job, we want to win, and we want to do right by our kids.”

What do you think? Besides the new facility, where else does UGA need to be spending some of those profits to keep up with the teams from the state to our immediate west?

I saw the photos of the new indoor practice facility (Notice I did not say field). Why don’t they invest in a new indoor practice field? Seems that would help. A 20 yard long field does not help much. WHat can you do? Run one of Bobo’s patented third and long HB Draws over and over?

The lack of spending is very obvious in the coaching staff. CMR make 2.8 million which ranked 5th behind NS, UM, BP, and LM. I’m sure Chizik will bump him down to 6th now. CTG makes 750,000 which is very good for a DC but the rest of the staff is underpaid. CSS just about doubled his salary to go to Texas. We are not paying the best for assistants so we are not getting the best assistants. How can a program that is the 2nd most profitable and 3rd most in revenue spend so little compared to the others. If we demand this program to compete for NC then we gotta put up the money

I don’t know the numbers but I wonder how much of that is being reinvested into other programs? If you look at the rest of our athletic programs we have had a lot of success. We’ve won back to back national titles in Gymnastics and Equestrian competition, our baseball team over the past decade has been excellent, our tennis teams have dominated, etc.

And a side note:
It’s not until the past 2 season that our football team has been kinda bad.
But when you lose two of your star offensive players in the top 5 of the NFL draft, I think maybe 2 years isn’t much of a recovery time. (Assuming we can recover).

Some times teams go through slumps. Texas is the most profitable program in the country, and i’m pretty sure they invest a lot back into football. Just like UGA, they have good coaching. Yet they finished 5-7 for the season.

And just like UGA they recently lost their star QB.

It takes time to rebuild and regroup.

We will recover from losing Stafford and Moreno, but it’s only been two seasons.

Look at what happened to Florida after losing Tebow. We did better after losing Stafford, than Florida did after losing Tebow.

You don’t lose your star QB and not pay a price for a year or two. UGA, Florida, Texas, etc. are prime examples.

“We will recover from losing Stafford and Moreno, but it’s only been two seasons. ”

Good stuff Mr. King. The best investment we could make would be in a weight room which it appears we have done and in hiring top notch assistant coaches which we have done by hiring Grantham and company. Whether these two investments pay off remains to be seen. We also need to invest in strength and conditioning coaches and baby sitters to keep the players out of trouble, academic and otherwise.

He’s only been gone two years. Tebow’s been gone one. We actually went 8-5 after he left. Florida also went 8-5 after Tebow left.

My point is, it takes time to rebuild. UGA started a freshman QB this year.

We’ve actually won 5 titles including the 1980 title. And we’ve won two in this decade we just finished.

Just lost Searels to Texas because they offered him $200,000 MORE.

Mark’s made the program a TON of money/profit, he has earned the right to share in SOME OF THE LOOT.

I really don’t think McGarity will be at Georgia long, might get ousted mid-deason if Richt goes 1-4 again. He simple didn’t do 1 single thing to help Mark Richt in 2010.

Georgia is the second most profitable athletic department in the Nation; behind Texas. The addition of Mark Fox and his commitment to basketball is only going to help in growing that number in the next few years. Georgia will not hire a long term fix at the O-line coaching position until the results are in from 2011. Mark Richt is on a very short leash. However, the recipe for Richt to stay at Georgia from the School’s perspective seems to be: 1) land a top tier recruiting class w/ a top DE, top DL, and top RB in the class. 2.) There can be ZERO off-field problems! If there are, Richt will have to come down with a heavy hand. NO EXCEPTIONS! 3.) Win 9 games or more and find a way to beat Florida. JMO. But from Richt’s vantage point, he may get fed up with all the nonsense and take leave on his own accord. Hoping for the best and GO DAWGS!

Hey fellow Dawgs, there is no point arguing with these Auburn people. I have lived in Columbus Ga. all of my life. There are more D.A. Auburn fans here than anywhere in the nation, well except for maybe Opelika Alabama, which by the way has more mobile home dealerships per capita than any other area in the U.S. I know, and have known many of them in my 50 years on this planet. I would venture to say, that all but 3 or 4 of them are some of the biggest D.A. people I have ever known. They are the most jealous fan base in the nation, largely due to the fact that they have always had to play second fiddle to Bama.

Believe me guys, UGA has been in the Auburn people’s head more than just about anything for the last 5 years. Auburn has always been willing to do anything and everything to try to pull even with Alabama and Georgia for at least 60 years. They never learn from their mistakes, or punishment. The Auburn people were in denial in 1993 about their cheating program, just as they are now. Then all of a sudden they were playing recorded tapes between player and coach on receipt of money on the player’s part on 20/20 on prime time television, and even then they would not completely own up to anything. Auburn has now pulled ahead of every cheating P.O.S. program in the country as being THE #1 P.O.S. cheating program of all time. I cannot wait to hear their B.S., denial based comments when it all blows up this time. There is your “Bottom Line”.

Saban, Meyer, and Chizik also wipe their backsides with their left hands and Richt wipes with his right. I’m seeing a correlation here.

The bottom line is that the players are out of control, the preparation of the players is lacking, the gameday coaching stinks, talent is continually wasted, etc. None of which has anything to do with how much they spend.

The percentage we spend on football has to go up! Football brings in the most revenue therefore most of the money needs to be spent on it! Hopefully McGarity gets that! All this revenue needs to translate into:

1. Championships! With our recruiting base we should be in contention for the SEC East every season! If we do that it will lead to NC title contention since we play in the best conference in the land! If Richt can’t lead us there I love the man but its time to bring in someone who can!

2. Improvements to Sanford like the ones that were just finished at Stegeman. Most of the SEC has passed us by in their area with NFL like amenities that needs to change ASAP!

3. A full field Indoor Practice Facility! I don’t care that Richt wants it to be part of a larger multiuse facility. Get something built ASAP then add on to it gradually. Sometimes the parent just gotta do what’s best for the kid! I’m sure if this happens once Richt has the IPF at his disposal he’ll understand it was the right thing to just get a full filed version built ASAP.

After those two facilities projects are done then Foley Filed needs to be torn down & replaced with Gwinnett Braves stadium being the model as far as the project planning goes. My point being that tearing Foley down & building a new baseball stadium can be done between baseball seasons. After that’s done then we can move on to expanding Sanford by wrapping the 3rd deck all the way around. Then when that’s done we’ll need to improve something else I’m sure. The point is we should always be moving forward with our facilities!

We spend approx. 25% and Auburn and Ala. spends 42%-43%. That is a very large difference. What is Ala. and Auburn spending money on or wasting money that we aren’t ? Many times when you have a lot to spend doesn’t mean you have to do it if you are going to improve the program or get a return on the investment.

A similar article was posted in December on ESPN but local media didn’t pick it up. We’re clearly under investing in football; this is why the blame has to start with President Adams. He’s the one that have made it harder to support the team by diminishing investment in the team, cutting off tailgating, and creating an anti-football bias within the administration. Why has he under invested in football? Where is the accountability? Here’s that ESPN article: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/bowls10/news/story?id=5970794

Based on those figures, the UGA athletic department is not as committed to winning as Alabama and other SEC schools. That should not be the case. #2 in profits, #7 in spending, that’s a disgrace! That’s one more reason why UGA hasn’t won a national championship in 30 years. If UGA is going to be about winning championships, then they better spend the money where they can. Richt has been crying for an indoor practice facility since he has been here. Where is it? With as much money as UGA is making, there is no excuse for lacking in anything. Larry, this is not rocket science. Let us raise the hood and get up under there and fiddle around. Well, um, Joe T IS a great technician. He knows that it AIN’T rocket science.

The UGA linemen lack the physicality to play at the SEC requisite level. We are twirps in other words. My wife ( UGA 73 ) said all during this last year, that “We are getting shoved around …… our big guys are weaklings”. She really noticed it in the SC and Colorado and MSU and GT game and the UCF game. AU was anybody’s game till we blew the second half kick off. We got outcoached on that play. Fairley was alsoa beast. Gone now.

Florida? Yeah, but Murray choked and blew that game.

We shall see. Unleash some of the money when a new staff comes in. These current UGA guys have let it go to waste, it appears.

Whoever comes in will have some excellent talent and all he will have to do is infill with blue chip linemen for a couple of years. UGA could go get one more quality back in 2012 and then, all linemen.

Anyone even remotely interested in college football knows that UGA’s LOSING issues are on both sides of the ball. Easy, easy to correct and we will go back to 10-2 type of years. Look for 2012 and 2013 to be excellent and by then, several SEC coaches will have come and gone. Saban, Spurrier and Miles and Chizk and Petrino and Nutt and even Dooley might all be gone in two more years.

I agree with you. I have been saying for two years that CMR is not the problem at UGA. The real problem is Adams and it does not matter what we do in coaching, there will be no real change until Adams is no longer President.

Auburn football is a criminal enterprise, a fact that will eventually become clear once the FBI completes its investigation of Bobby Lowder’s Colonial Bank failure and leans hard enough on one of his trusted lieutenant’s to get them to flip on him. why do you think Chizik was the only guy in America Lowder could get to take the job? The coaching fraternity all know what’s going on there. You Auburn fans (who really need to stick to your own blog) seem to be living in a reality distortion field. Ask USC how that worked out for them and Reggie Bush.

Dang it UGA fans, quit spending your guv’ment entitlements on these items. Your babies need cheese puffs and chocolate milk and we all know the trailer needs a few broken panes replaced… And don’t get mad, I’m jus’ having fun at your expense like you have at mine. Really, I love y’all like you were my own red-headed stepchildren…Check out the History Channel on 08FEB. Larry the Cable Guy is starting a new, short series and episode 1 features my county here in Georgia. A little moonshining history…

Well Georgia supporters,

Who is stealing all your money?

You are in the bottom half of the SEC in spending in football and are last in basketball and baseball spending.

Yet, you are the second largest institution in your league by a wide margin.

You are getting screwed to the tune of $11.7 million per year but you are too stupid to ask questions. Did you know your athletic board has over $65M in reserve cash and “investments”?

Enjoy paying your money and losing, while M. F. Adams and your athletic board laugh at you all the way to the bank.

BILL KING Why do you think that is necessary to insert that they may have to buy out Coach Richt’s contract. This is not what you expect from a UGA SUPPORTER close to signing day. You dissapoint me with this rhetoric and this is not the first time. If you can’t pull for the program then please don’t pull against it while weaaring a Dawg hat on your head. Let’s show a little team spirit among us Dawgs.

It is about time!!! Somebody has FINALLY said we have have been whipped up front! We can recruit all the skill players in the world but without winning the battle upfront you are dead! OB can’t throw, runners can’t run… the scheme is to block somebody off the ball. IF this can be accomplished, LOOKOUT!!!! We have had the best skilled athletes in the SEC for years but we have been getting ruled on both sides of the ball. I am excited to hear those comments! Best article yet this post season! Boys and girls, hide the woman and the children because the boat might just be about to pull out!!!!! GO DAWGS!!

Bill,

Have you asked where this bottom line goes? It sure doesn’t go to making your athletic teams better.

If you dig enough, you will find that UGA runs the most crooked athletic program in the SEC.

Mobile, so we take it that you will not be pulling for the UGA football team to do well in 2011? Because if you are pulling for them in 2011, you are by definition supporting Ol’ Coach Richt, like it or not. That is a completely different issue that having an opinion that UGA would fair better to hire a different coach the next year.

It would be kind of nice for the rest of us on your same team, if you would stop insulting our intelligence for simply realizing this very basic fact. We just don’t enjoy losing every game in our mind, every day for the next 8 months if that’s ok with you. Rather talk about the game and what might actually happen, not what “shoulda/coulda didn’t happen.

Trailers for the weight room? telling. So a recruit that’s big into working out and lifting would probably be turned off by a visit to Georgia, while a kid that could care less about working out woudln’t notice or care about the trailer facility. I think we’ve been landing the flashy, undisciplined types, but not the tough, hard workers… and it has shown. Shows in that we are now a finesse team now and not a power/physical football team. That will be Richt’s legacy — turning a traditional blue collar defense and power running team into a finesse, undisciplined team– unless something magical happens here in his 11th hour. Low odds unless we get lucky on a once in a lifetime recruit.

Actually, wouldn’t a hard working, serious, blue collar player be less likely to care about where the weights are? And a flashy, let somebody else do the heavy lifting kid be the one that was more impressed with a fancy building?

No matter, I’m sure the trailers are just while they are doing the massive renovations underway.

It’s simple — Auburn and Alabama’s expenditures are a lot higher because of the “benefits” they pay out to their players (i.e. Cam Newton, etc.). If I was the NCAA or FBI, I think I would be curious as to why their expenditures are that high. Money laundering is a crime.

$52,500,000.00 profit. We sink 25.8% back in. That’s $13,545,000.00. If we sank 43.3% in (like Bama) we’d be at $22,732,500.00–a difference of $9,187,500.00. If we sank 42.2% in (like Auburn) we’d be at $22,155,000.00–a difference of $8,610,000.00. To my mind, this could pay for a new coach or two…

I am not sure who controls the spending. I know the board and AD have final say over what the coaches request, but is it possible that Richt’s humble nature is causing him not to request more money?

I love the profitability, but here is a thought. If we do not continue to put a top football team on the field, revenue will decrease and that means the profit does as well. Less profit from football means less money available for everything that footballl basically pays for. I don’t think we should ’spend, spend, spend’ on football, but if we need to spend to maintain and better are ability to put a perennial SEC title contender on the field then lets get crackin.

Snoop Dawg says ya get what ya pay for. Unfortunately, UGA doesn’t even get that. Do you think we get three million dollars a year of coaching, motivation, or leadership from Mark Richt? If you do, you need to go back to school and study harder.

Folks, coaching costs money. If you buy a Dodge, don’t expect a Corvette or a Ferrari. We need to get a new car at UGA. Let’s trade in Richt for a real quality coach who has proven that he knows what he’s doing. Then let’s get out some of that profit that the administrators have been hoarding or giving themselves raises with and hire the very best coaching staff in the NCAA. We would still be the most profitable program in the SEC cause revenues will skyrocket if we can return to Glory.

You folks with your heads in the sand about Richt do not help the program or the university.
