Dan Magill, the quintessential Georgia Bulldog. (University of Georgia)
GQ magazine has released its list of the 25 Coolest Athletes of All Time, honoring icons who in addition to their sporting achievements also possessed a certain grace, style or swagger that made them fan favorites.
The list, included in the February issue of GQ, which has nine different covers, includes such names as Muhammad Ali, “Pistol” Pete Maravich, Joe Namath, Arnold Palmer, Pele and Ted Turner (as a yachtsman).
This got me to thinking about who would qualify for a list of the coolest Georgia Bulldogs of all time. Here are 15 names I came up with, listed alphabetically:
Champ Bailey. A virtual iron man for the Dogs, playing on offense, defense and special teams and winning the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player after his junior year at UGA. He’s gone on to be a top NFL defensive player for Washington and Denver.
Teresa Edwards. In addition to starring for the Lady Dogs, she played basketball for the U.S. in an unprecedented four Olympics.
Bill Goldberg. Followed his football days at UGA and in the NFL by becoming practically a household name in pro wrestling.
Terry Hoage. A two-time consensus All-America defensive back who Vince Dooley said was the best defensive player he’d ever coached, but he also graduated from UGA with a 3.86 GPA in genetics. After a pro football career, now has his own vineyard.
John Isner. UGA’s all-time leader in singles and doubles victories, this tennis star earned All-American honors each of his four years and led Georgia to the 2007 NCAA championship. And after outlasting Nicolas Mahut last summer at Wimbledon in the longest ever professional tennis match, he sat down for media interviews wearing a vintage UGA T-shirt. Very cool.
Courtney Kupets. Winner of two Olympic medals and just about every individual collegiate gymnastics honor around during the Gym Dogs’ run of consecutive NCAA titles. Ended up being named the nation’s top female college athlete.
Dan Magill. Established UGA as a tennis powerhouse and made Athens the center of the collegiate tennis universe. And he’s still playing tennis. But the longtime coach also is pretty much the living embodiment of Bulldog spirit and is celebrating his 90th birthday this week. Check out Loran Smith’s tribute to one of UGA’s best.
Johnny Rauch. Starred as a quarterback for UGA and then went on to coach the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl. He’s credited by Bill Walsh with having invented the West Coast offense.
Jake Scott. The UGA All-American defensive back went on to be a four-time All-Pro for the Miami Dolphins during their heyday. Also known as one of the wildest Dogs players ever and the guy who rode a motorcycle over Stegeman Coliseum.
Matt Stinchcomb. Named to UGA’s Circle of Honor, the brainy former offensive lineman is one of the school’s best representatives as founder of the annual Countdown to Kickoff charity event, along with brother Jon and former UGA quarterback David Greene.
Richard Tardits. The French rugby player knew practically nothing about football when he joined the Dogs and ended up setting a school record for QB sacks, eventually broken by David Pollack.
Charley Trippi. Starred in both football and baseball at UGA and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Athens resident is known as a classy gentleman.
Herschel Walker. Hey, when you’re known nationally just by your first name, you’ve got to be cool!
Hines Ward. A Mr. Everything on offense for the Dogs and one of the gutsiest players I’ve ever seen. He’s gone on to a long NFL career, was voted Super Bowl MVP and is back in the Super Bowl again.
Dominique Wilkins. Known in the NBA for his spectacular slam dunks, he’s the only basketball Bulldog to have his jersey retired.
Who else belongs on a list of the coolest Bulldogs ever?

Fran Tarkenton has burned his bridge by the way he handled himself recently.
Not cool.
Not at all.
It is fine to be upset. We all are.
What is not cool is throwing the head coach under the bus on a radio show and NOT BEING MAN ENOUGH TO MEET WITH MARK RICHT IN PERSON.
Tarkenton burned his bridge. He can live with the consequences.

2 that immediately jump to my mind are DJ Shockley and Sundiata Gaines.
DJ played behind David Greene for 4 years and could’ve transfered but stayed the course and was rewarded with an SEC title his senior year.
Sundiata played during the WORST of the Felton years and was rewarded with an SEC tourney title his senior year.
Both were great talents that could’ve been bitter but showed loyalty and dedication to their programs.
That, to me, is the epitome of cool.

You can’t go wrong listing guys like Hines and Isner. I love guys like that who have gone on to be stars in their post-UGA career and still show off their Georgia pride whenever they can. When Hines was on with Mike and Mike in the morning last year before a Monday Night Football game, he wore a UGA jacket on the telecast. I also saw him wearing some UGA gear on a few local stories in Pittsburgh. Isner has been wearing UGA gear pretty much every time I’ve seen him interviewed off of the court. Champ wears a lot of UGA gear. I just think it’s good for the school. And, it’s great to know that those guys still remember us.

I haven’t heard anyone in the UGA Athletic dept being upset with Fran. I expect they are happy to continue to cash Fran’s large contributions.
And how exactly did you conduct your poll that shows “most Dawgs are upset with Fran?”
My equally scientific poll says more Dawgs are more upset with Richt and Co’s losing and player arrests than with Fran Tarkenton.

Given the magazine’s criteria, I’m not sure all the ones you have listed here necessarily qualify. Greatest athletes in school history — they’d certainly be in the discussion, but the way I read it we’re looking for universal man/woman type folks. I’d definitely keep Hoage, Goldbert, Dan Magill and Jake Scott. Herschel is a no-brainer, with Olympic bobsledding, MMA, published author. The guy has done everything. I’d think Billy Payne has to be on there, and Alec Kessler would merit consideration too.

@Jay Stone – I totally agree. Most people on here are missing the point. This isn’t about great athletes; we have had a ton of those over the years. Fran Tarkenton is a great athlete, but he is anything but cool. Lately he has shown himself to be an a$$ho!e of the first order. You can talk about family amongst family, but keep it amongst the family. Dan Magill is as cool as the other side of the pillow, ditto that for Herschel, Spec Towns, Teresa Edwards, Hines, Richard Tardits. Those are some cool folks. Fran – great athlete, greater d-bag.

Since dawgtards seem to love living in the past, how about remembering the Jan Kemp trial, which exposed UGA and Vince Dooley for the jokes that they were. My favorite quote from the trial was this one:
O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
The best thing about the trial was that it completely killed Vince Dooley’s shot at Congress, since he was exposed as a fraud and a cheat during the trial. Make no mistake – Dooley knew everything that was going on.
Nothing has changed in the almost three decades since the trial. If anything, the abuses are even worse. Exhibit #1: Jim Harrick and son.
Today the players are even more illiterate and felonious and, well, just plain stupid, as evidenced by their arrest records and record number of penalties. Even Vince Dooley couldn’t have controlled this mob, much less Mark Richt. And now even the AD is a drunk debaucherer.
There’s a reason why UGA is known as The Cesspool of the South.

Strongly disagree with Joey. I think most people would agree the manner than Fran handled the radio interview was unprofessional and lacked courtesy. There’s a right way to do things and a wrong way to do things. Embarrassing your HC on the radio – low class. Sounds like a grumpy old man. That’s my impression of the guy. I could care less what he thinks about the current state, same as I could care less about what Hollywood types think. Entitled to your own opinion, but doesn’t mean you’re entitled to show your rear end in communicating said opinion.
Back to the question – Pollack and Fox, especially if/when they win tonight.

Fran Trakenton has a right to his opinion…and to voice it. But his timing was terrible. Also, as a successful business person he should understand that a person’s supervisor can have a lot to do with their success or failure. If you are given a goal, but forced to spend time on issues/matters that don’t move you closer to that goal you will more than likely fail. I don’t think Damon Evans had enough experience as a manager to understand some ot these issues. Let’s hope McGarily does.

A few salient comments:
1. Four different SEC teams have won the last five BCS championships.
2. UGA was not one of those teams.
3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.
4. During that period, UGA did not even win its SEC division.
5. Red panties.
In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.
So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?
A Jake Scott memory
January 25th, 2011
2:53 pm
In the spring of 1969, I lived at Reid Hall. In the back of that dorm was a parking lot. One day, I parked my heap and was headed into the dorm. It was late in the day ( Friday ) around 2:00-3:00 and Jake Scott and Mike Cavan were loading up Jake’s NEW British green Corvette convertible with golf clubs. I think Cavan had been kicked out of McWhorter Hall for some reason. I think Jake was about to head later to Canada to play ball after he jumped ship at UGA.
I asked them : “where are you guys headed” They said “to Ft. Lauderdale, where are you heading” I said “back to Atlanta later today”. They said come on with us, it will be a party.
I know they were kidding but I was tempted to walk on the wild side. I am sure that they had a blast. I also know that my car would have burned too much oil on the way to Ft. Lauderdale and broken down.
UGA memories are special.

Some Auburn graduate memories in 2014
January 25th, 2011
2:58 pm
In the year 2014, Auburn grads will fondly recall their NC earned on the field vs Oregon. They will be overwhelmed however, with the ugly reality that back in 2013, THE FBI brought it crashing down around their heads with the Victoryland Dog Track revelations having to do with Scam and his Papa and Mr. Milton McGwirk and the corruption and bribery and gambling charges brought to bare on AU. They will also recall Coach Chizk who left them in 2012, when the FBI allegations were hot and heavy.

Anyone to allege that Jake Scott was anything other than one bright young man is simply uninformed. I think both of his parents were PHDs or one was a UGA Prof and one was a physician at St. Mary’s. Even if this is not accurate about his parents, he was never thought to be anything but a smart fellow. Crazy? Wild? Free Spirit?? Absolutely.
Smart? Absolutely.

Buck Swindle. The name alone just has a ring. Then again, the Dawgs were loaded with great sounding names back then in Penny Pennington, Happy Dicks, Jiggy Smaha, etc.
Bill Stanfill. Stanfill got drunk DURING one of the Florida games. As we were killing them 51-0, Dooley pulled out the starters and fans began pouring smuggled hooch into Stanfill’s cup. After another Florida game where they whooped Spurrier all over the place, fans got on the field and began sticking money into Stanfill’s helmet. Twenties, even. He also apologized to Spurrier during one of the games. “Sorry Stevie, didn’t mean to step on your skirt.”
Johnny Zambiasi. Ben’s brother. If you don’t know why he qualifies, let’s just say all young Bulldogs were once encouraged to prove how crazy they were to their fellow teammates. I hope no one kissed Johnny for a few years after this.

about Jake Scott. This is truly the character. Was at the masters
one year with a coach I will not name, played with Scott. Scott
was with Billy Kilmer, another character. Our coach asked Jake
if he would come play in his pro-am. Jake asked the coach for the
date, and replied “you know, I wish you had asked me earlier, but
I have already commited to a pro am in Hawaii that week.” I can’t
say what he would do to one his former coaches if he ever caught
him in a dark alley, but this web article is right on.

We know we’re frustrated, coach Richt knows we’re frustrated, the team knows we’re frustrated…………whether coach Richt is coach or not is no longer the issue, the issue is, do we love “our” Georgia Bulldogs ? Are we about damn ready to get behind them, and with our positive support help generate some positive chemistry that our players and coaches so desperately need about now ?………….I’m a Georgia Bulldog, call me old fashion if you will, but I love ‘em as much now as I did when Mr. Walker hurled himself over the Notre Dame defensive line that “GLORIOUS DAY”………………RED

it shows how stupid some of the dawg fans are including bill for not including fran tarkenton on the list.
fran is one of the top fifty players ever to play in the nfl. that is higher than any other former dawg.
he is in both the college and pro football hall of fame, only charley trippi has accomplish that goal as a former dawg.
he is an very sharp businessman who appears on fox business and other business programs.
fran is tired of seeing other sec schools win national championships and georgia continue to be a middle of the road SEC program at best and yes he called out mark richt and he had the guts to do so ,while many other former dawg players feel the very same way,but fran had the guts to say it.
and to dawglex, fran tarkenton could care less what you think or any other lame georgia fan thinks about his candid view of the losing georgia program that we have today.

I’m glad to see the names from generations past like Smaha,Sapp,Stanfill,Scott, etc but how could Craig “Sky”
Hertwig be overlooked. He’s probably better known for
the 5TH Quarter or what had to be a record numer of
holding penalties when playing for the Detroit Lions on
Thanksgiving Day but he was proud to be a Dawg.

Very impressive group and gives us reason to be proud of our history, There are so many that our first Hisman winner, Fireball Frankie Sinkwitch could be left out, We need to remember Johnny Carson end, who made it bigger in the NFL than anyone until Fran came along. And do not forget Zeak Brat.. and my favorite,Bob Taylor. I daydream thoughts of Tayler sweeps. Lastly, the General, George Patton and his sidekick from Cairo, Bill Standfill. Thinking about these guys and what they did is a welcome diversion from worrying about our current bad situation in Athens,

i’m not upset with fran tarkenton at all. i’m glad that someone in a position to have his voice heard finally stepped up and spoke out against a criminally mediocre football program being coached by a man earning about $3Million a year. for this program to be as bad as it has been over the past five seasons is inexcusable. kudos to fran for having a pair and saying what needed to be said. go dawgs!

You have obviously forgotten Bill Stanfill. Probably the best defensive end to play at UGA. All Pro with the Miami Dolphins. But my favorite is that he is the main reason Steve Spurrier hates UGA to this day for the way Stanfill kept Spurrier on his butt the entire game when Florida played Georgia in 1967. Spurrier got the Heisman that year but Stanfill didn’t vote for him.

Spec Towns immediately came to mind. Trippi and Sinkwich, especially since they played offense & defense. Kevin Butler, and even if only for the Clemson Kick. Add James Banks to Terry Fair and Verne Fleming. Katrina McClain. Probably a lot of men’s and women’s golfers, swimmers, etc. that were never in high-profile sports that are equally cool.

I’m sure there are many good candidates, but a few who stick out as worthy of consideration include:
1. Len Hauss – Fullback and Center for UGA from 1960-64 went on to Washington Redskins and at least 4 Pro-Bowls at Center. One of best ever.
2. Big Jim Mitchell – Nasty Tackle who later played with distinction for SF 49′ers.
3. David Pollock…of course, for obvious reasons.
4. Don Leeburn…great player, but even greater contribution as Bulldog supporter, Chairman of Ga. Board of Regents, CEO of Georgia Crown…hey the man who brings the booze gets in the game, doesn’t he.
5. Matthew Stafford…how many number one NFL picks has UGA had. Two…more?. Herschel & Stafford come to mind.
Food for thought. Great article BTW.

Hines Ward. Everyone knew Hershel and Champ had tons of talent but who would
have thought that Hines would play three different positions in college, deliver the
most devestating block in the 97 UGA/UF game to secure the win and make it to
the pros. Ok, so he hasn’t done much in the pro’s (tongue in cheek) but he is my
favorite Dawg NOT from Johnson County.
