Malcolm Mitchell (left) and Jay Rome committing to Georgia is a major coup for Mark Richt. (Chip Towers / AJC)
Georgia landing a verbal commitment from Valdosta’s Jay Rome was huge.
It’s not that the five-star player, rated the nation’s top tight end prospect by ESPNU, likely will be needed to make a big impact immediately on the field for “Tight End U,” as he called it. Rome certainly will be given the chance to play early, but the Dogs are well stocked at the position with Orson Charles, Aron White and Artie Lynch, even if Bruce Figgins switches to fullback.
No, Rome’s biggest immediate impact might come before he ever even signs on the dotted line with UGA, by giving momentum to Mark Richt’s alternately praised and derided concept of a signing an in-state “Dream Team.”
After making his announcement on national TV, Rome was on hand Thursday night as Valdosta teammate Malcolm Mitchell, a Top 30 prospect at wide receiver and/or cornerback, also put on a cap with the Georgia “G.”
Both picked Georgia over Nick Saban and Alabama, which has to rank as a major recruiting coup for Richt. “I believe Mark Richt is a great coach,” Rome said. “I don’t feel like he’s going anywhere anytime soon. If we can get a couple of more guys to come in with me in this class, we’ll have everything we need at Georgia, and I believe we’ll start winning football games.”
Rome used his national media platform to try and get more prospects to climb on board the Dream Team train. Along with junior college defensive nose guard John Jenkins, Georgia badly needs Columbus running back Isaiah Crowell and Thomas County defensive end Ray Drew, who reportedly was present at Mitchell’s announcement in Valdosta.
“Isaiah, Ray, come be a Dawg,” Rome said on his broadcast. “We can have the dream team and we’re going to do it. Be a Dawg, baby!”
There are no guarantees in any of this, of course. The verbal commitments aren’t binding. And high school prospects don’t always pan out exactly as planned.
But Richt needs to restore some glamour and prestige to a program that’s been sadly lacking in momentum the past couple of years. Making his Dream Team a reality would provide some of that offseason momentum the Dogs need as they get ready for their national showcase game in Atlanta against Boise State to open the most important season in Richt’s coaching career.

This to me is really the first sign that the coaching staff is finally firing on all cylinders again. Hopefully it will carry over into all the other areas of our football program. Really need the D-line prospects to commit. That’s the biggest areas of weakness. Drew would certainly be a great pickup. The other thing is that we need to be locking down the best GA recruits EVERY year. Not just this year.

It was a nice surprise if your a DAWG fan to pick up Mitchell, he could be a lock down corner or play WR. If UGA can land those big 3 that are left,Jenkins, Crowell, and Drew, they could compete for an SEC championship next year, of course thats contingent on them actually signing and not switching. Something special is happening with this group of recruits. They seem to be leaders. They also appear to realize that if they were to join Alabama they would automatically make some other Bama player lose his scholarship due to the oversigning. And they also know that when they are upper classman, they may be the ones to lose their scholarship when Saban decides he wants someone else.

It doesn’t matter if UGA gets Crowell or not because he will never see the field his freshman year because Richt will say “he doesn’t do a good enough job of pass blocking”. How many times have we heard that about freshmen running backs in the last few years. Moreno was obviously our best back and he was redshirted. Ealey was our best back 2 years ago and he didn’t see the field until the season was shot.

Your running back order will be #1 Ealey #2 King #3 Malcome #4 Crowell #5 Thomas. Ealey is the leading rusher for the past two years and has only played in half the games each year behind an incosistent line. King will be a senior so Richt is going to play him. Crowell will not have the same impact as Lattimore. I think he is injury prone.

Before I start, I will admit we have our own battles in Auburn. But we know we have the staff to get the job done with the recruits we are working with.
The “DREAM TEAM” as labeled are good HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS. None of them have played a down in the SEC or any FBS game.
From previous classes and top 5 and top 10 classes signed by Georgia the current staff has to show any ability to prepare these kids to be a successful TEAM. You can have all the great individual players with all these great personal stats, but there is alot more that goes into championship teams than good high school stars.
Your staff still ranks in the bottom 5 in the conference and there are no signs of getting better.
Keep the DREAM ALIVE, but you are not where close to being a contender in the big boys league.

Winning a recruiting battle in your home state at THE FOOTBALL TOWN in Georgia verses The University of Alabama in the state should not be called a recruiting coup. It should be considered a win that should have happened in the first place.
Give Saban credit, he is doing what Tennessee used to be able to do; come in and grab some very good players to help take him over the top.
Georgia has came in ‘2nd’ a lot over the last few years and it has taken it’s toll. We have lost three our four close battles this year for kids.
CMR does need to grabb these last two or three. If he pulls that off – this class can be a difference maker.
I personally do not believe the ranks are as weak as others. UGA is going to be fine. Which will be great, since most of us are really tired of the pathetic post that have been so constant this year.
CMR deserves this next year. Let’s pull together and root for the guy to get back to where he was (which everyone should remember is the best we had been since the early 80′S).

Tiger Mania, I would be real careful here. You won some ‘very close’ games this year that w/o the very players that are leaving the program – you would have lost.
You do not have the players in the ranks to replace them and your coming off a NSC Year.
This has all the makings of a 6-6 year.
Personally, after UGA, I like Auburn, because of the over-all class the average fan shows.
It will be interesting to see if they maintain that class with the NCS or turn into say the ‘Alabama’ type.

I wonder what effect the Jeff Shultz article about the “oversigning” that Alabama, LSU, and Ole Miss are doing will have. The 5-star guys probably won’t worry about it, but the 3 and 4-star guys may have some concern about getting run off.

Tiger Mania, what Auburn apparently has is the checkbook and a way to keep it hidden from plain view. You’re one to talk about how to win championships, when the one before this last one was how long ago??
Congratulations, but don’t come on here like you know all the secrets to winning a championship. I’m afraid one of those secrets is going to get revealed pretty soon, and it will be a long time before we hear from you again. What was Chizick’s record at Iowa State??? Now, in 2 years he’s “the man”? That’s not what most Auburn folks said when he got hired. I guess you didn’t know he came packaged with a couple of personal bankers and a gambling empire at his disposal.
Again, congrats on the championship, but don’t act like you’ve got all the answers.

I would love to sit here and argue with you concerning your comments but I cant. You are mostly correct in your comments. We have always got good players and somehow can never get the best out of them. Its basically do or die for this coaching staff in 2011. We still need to recruit the creme of the crop for either this coaching staff or a new one comming in.I can assure you I wont make any excuses in 2011,I dont have any more to use.The past 5 years have drained me. Only time will tell if UGA can crawl out of the cellar, but getting the recruits we need sure cant make it worse.

Bunch of idiots here. The big deal is in the fact that border schools even with UGA having had such a terrible season are unable to get the top talent from the staff. If UGA can land Crowell and Drew the STAFF WILL HAVE LANDED 4 OF THE TOP 6. That is pretty damn impressive having to fend off Auburn who just won a title and other SEC elite teams like Alabama and Florida. It does give fans something positive to look forward to and that cannot be question unless you are a flipping bozo.

It’s great to get some good recruiting news. If Richt can keep the recruits who have already committed . . . and also pick up Jenkins, Crowell, and Drew, he will have helped himself tremendously. But getting the talent to Athens has never really been a problem at Georgia under Richt. The problem has been developing the athletes he signs and pro-actively working to keep them out of trouble once they arrive. If the coaches will truly physically and mentally prepare the team for each week’s opponent, things can change for the better. But Richt is gonna have to show me before I will believe he’s the man to do it. I guess what I’m really saying is that our recruiting class is shaping up to possibly be special one this year. But it’s only the first step. Now he’s gotta “finish the drill” or he’s gonna be finished as head coach.

The “best” players have always been on the field, irrespective of class. Always have, always will. “loyalty” has never been a consideration for meaningful playing time. There is a long list of player beating out others despite seniority under Richt.
The falsification of that loyalty myth is based on assuming that Richt doesn’t play the guy you believe he thinks is best,(that would defy logic and be incredibly stupid of him,) it’s that he doesn’t always think the best player is who you believe. (which is a judgement that should based on direct exposure to the actual players involved).

You do not believe what you just posted. The talent level in Georgia is only topped by California, Texas and Florida. Hince UGA has zero need to come into Alabama to recruit. You know that aswell I I do. That is why you see Auburn come and recruit a Georgia kid, Cam Newton, who just led your team to that National Title. Why wasn’t it a home grown Bama boy doing that for ya if you have so much talent oozing out of the state. Really good try though.

It would be great to keep all the committed so far and get Crowell, Drew, and Jenkins . Even though I still think Bobo is over his head as defense coordinator I will admit and alway’s have agreed that he needs to stay on our payroll . Bobo should be promoted to recruiting coordinator and made the coach of the Quarterback’s. That’s where he has proven his value.
Knowing this will not happen, CMR needs to send Bobo to PLAY CALLING 101 SCHOOL after national signing day so he will learn to stick with what is working and stop trying play’s that is not working. And CMR need’s to go to MAKING ADJUSTMENT’S DURING THE GAME SCHOOL, before the 3rd quarter.
Head coaches and coordinator that will admit there is still some thing’s they can learn will go a long way in turning around UGA’s horrible 2010 season.
I put UGA’s 2010 failures about 75% on the coaches and 25% on the player’s. Can’t wait to see the coaching philosophy and scheme changes. If we don’t get that then the coaches and CMR are blaming the players. These kid’s need leadership.
I think Grantham’s defense will show great improvement in 2011 with his first recruiting class and last year’s red shirt’s playing. Georgia will blitz a lot more in 2011 and look a lot like the old Junkyard Dawg’s

The Dawgs currently have 21 players verbally committed with 4 Scholarships left.
Of those 21, 5 are from out of state.
They are currently targeting 3 more from Georgia. Players #1, 2 and 9.
This is going to be a tremendous recruiting class!!!
They are also targeting 2 JUCO players to fill the same position, we only need 1 of these 2.
The amazing thing is Ga has gotten EVERY Offensive player in the AJC Top 50 they have wanted except 2 that are still uncommitted.
They have gotten all of the Defensive players in the Top 50 except 6, with 1 still uncommitted. This is because there were so many good Defensive players in Ga this year.
Getting these last 3 players would mean that the Dawgs got every player they wanted in the Top 50 except 5. That would be amazing!

We lost the bowl game after CMR decided to kick a field goal instead of going for the first down. Nobody would have said anything if we had gone for the first down and not made it because UCF would have gotten the ball on the 2 yard line and it would have shown confidence in the player’s to get the job done. CMR can never not take advantage of an opportunity to show confidence in his team even if it doesn’t work. KEEP THE SPARK LITE ,DON’T DO SOMETHING THAT WILL PUT IT OUT.

New AD McGarity has helped Coach Richt evaluate the program. Richt knows he needs to …
1. Recruit well (done)
2. Delegate responsibility (done)
3. Evaluate coaches (done)
To Do List:
1. Win 9 games in 2011
2. Coach up the players
3. Put Ga in a bowl game
4. Win back the Ga fanbase
5. Show some emotion and motivation in the locker room and the sidelines – This may be his toughest obstacle.

In the NFL the TE’s & FB’s can also line up as H-backs, in fact many teams use TE’s as the FB when they need one. Since we run a pro style attack our TE’s should be trained to be H-Back’s & FB’s too. Our FB’s should be able to line up as H-Backs as well. This would really help if we go back to a fastbreak style attack. CMR wants to be “cutting edge” so let’s run our O at the pace of Oregon’s but use the power elements like Oklahoma’s does in there no huddle attack. The Sooners FB & TE’s can line up all over the field so they don’t have to sub them in & out so much. Also running this kind of O we’d go with a certain package for a series then call plays from that. Instead of just seemingly randomly calling plays.

Good to see a more positive blog from you, Bill! As were many of us Bulldawg faithful, you’ve seemed a little down in your writing since the UCF loss. With Jay Rome and Malcom Mitchell verbally commiting last night and the others already commited, our hopes for signing a ‘Dream Team’ this year have certainly gotten closer to a reality. I know verbal commitments aren’t binding, but I truly feel both Ray and Malcolm WANT to be Dawgs, and wouldn’t have committed otherwise. It’s good to see that Rome is really working on the other recruits we have on our wish-list.
Isaiah Crowell would be a nice pickup, but even if we don’t, I believe Boo Malcome will be that power back we’ve been missing. And hopefully, a new OL coach will work our OL players into the pass blocking and hole-opening linemen we’ve also been missing for particularly the past three years.
Our defense should be much better having had a year of experience to better learn CTG’s 3-4, but in order to be successful, we’ve REALLY got to get John Jenkins at NG. We could hardly keep any team from running through our DL. With Jenkins in the middle and Jarvis Jones and Richard Samuel as our ILBs behind him, our D could be devastating and playing like the Junkyard Dawgs of the Erk era.
Hope we continue our recruiting by signing Crowell, Drew, Jenkins and maybe a few other surprise commits. If we do, UGA could truly get back to being the team that others in the SEC don’t want to play. This might not be a quick transition, but, I’m hopeful. Go Dawgs in 2011 and start your way back to prominance in the SEC!

with the cloud hanging over this coach and program, just look at this class.#9 and could go to top 5. Just imagine if we had our Ducks in a row in Athens. The brand is still strong and 2-3 new assit coach’s away from being a force again. This NG ( Jenkins) is a big big deal if we can get him. The success of this D is nose guard who can disrupt the middle every play. We got last year up the middle.

dawglife,
as a guy who lives in atlanta and has to tolerate the barking, the g stickers, the sports talk all about georgia, and recently all the complaining and bickering about your Dawgs, then yeah I have the right to blast a coach and a program that SHOULD be in the top 10 every year with the talent around the state. But you and your fans every year talk all this smack about these recruits and how good they are going to be and they all turn out to be many drunks, idiots, and sellers of jerseys. And the end result is still no BCS title.
THE FOUR STATES AHEAD OF GEORGIA IN HIGH SCHOOL TALENT HAVE ALL WON BCS Titles, skip down to Louisiana and Alabama and still UGA has no title.
California-USC
Texas-UT
Florida, FSU, Florida
Ohio- OSU.
Down here
Louisiana -LSU twice
Alabama- Auburn and Alabama.

Miami’s coach is brand new with a nice long term contract. Jenkins knows this.
Saban also has a 6 year contract. Crowell knows this.
Georgia is not competing with the other schools here.
That’s why lose out on guys like Jenkins & Crowell. They’re smart enough to know if McGarity won’t sign Richt to a long term contract, and if Richt’s contract if 50% less years than Saban’s, there’s probably a reason.

see Mark Richt has learned something from the coaches at Auburn and Alabama, you go out and get a big JC DL to clog the middle. But CMR does not get is we had others surrounding him.
Jim Donnan left CMR with a boat load of talent on the OL and DL when he got there, but CMR likes the old FSU way of getting all these skill people first then building a team around them, that system does not work. So let me get this straight – in ‘10, UGA didn’t beat a single winning team, lost to a terrible Colorado, lost to UCF, now loses 3 of its best 4 playmakers to the NFL (AJ, Durham, Houston), and some of you think that the very coaches who coached UGA to two field goals vs SC, 12 points vs MSU, and two FGs in the bowl game are gonna win more games than they lose next year?
Richt will have another successful recruiting year, but so what? What does he accomplish with these NFL bound players?

Move Orson Charles to wide receiver!!! It is the most logic move since Georgia badly needs some talent and experience at the position. Charles is a physical speciman that can overpower corners and safeties, run by the linebackers, and even run by the secondary. The other tight ends have been a disappointment in my eyes since they were so highly recruited, and haven’t produced squat. We need to maximize the talent and size of Orson, not let him go to waste like so many athletes we’ve had before him. Jay Rome should get the opportunity to start this Fall if he can nail down some pass blocking, cause we know he has the physical ability to stand in there.
Malcom Mitchell should be inserted wherever he shows the most promise. Give him the opportunity like Brandon Smith, on both sides of the ball. Use both of them, and you have some dang speed out there and unlimited formations. We have got to get these guys in early and see what we are working with. I could care less about Caleb King being a senior, or Ealy being a third year starter. I want someone in there that can break tackles, has the will to gain yardage, and CAN HOLD ON TO THE FOOTBALL. These kids have a wonderful opportunity to get Georgia back in the thick of things. And these coaches are getting a breathe of fresh air, and a second chance to turn this ship around, so hopefully they will abandon the thought processes of the past few years and play everyone that needs to be playing. It’s not wasting a year of eligibility if they produce.

First and I do believe Tiger Mania ( while we do disagree from time to time ) will agree with me. The comment I found most interesting is. ” We are going to Georgia and start winning again ” As one senior Dawg said last night. Not a smart statement for a freshman. See you on the practice field “Bucko”.
Second we have been over-signing since the days of Bryant and Jordan. If you dont like then dont enroll or accept the scholarship. No one was whining about it when we were 6-6 and 7-5. Now that we have gone 36-5 over the past 3 years it is an issue. Tough at the top I guess. Winning championships and graduating players why would anyone want to go to those schools?

Let us cross our fingers for the other 3 in-state guys and for a highly recruited JU nose guard. Then give our coaches time to work and we will be ok. All the fans of other schools make me laugh making comments like, “What does Richt and UGA ever do with all that talent they get.” Try winning two SEC titles, finishing as high as #2 in the nation just 3 years ago, and sending a TON of players into the NFL (probably more than any school of any of the fans on this board making this criticism). If things would have broken the same way they did for Florida and LSU we too could have had a National Championship but we weren’t so fortunate to get into the Championship game when we had great teams with 1 or two losses like those teams were able to do (neither went undefeated while winning the championship). Because of the high turnover rate of players due to college only being 4 years (sometimes 5) it is very hard in college to be dominant year after year, especially in the SEC. People’s memories are just too short or they just have selective memories. UGA and Richt will both be just fine.

Crowell will not start at Bama or Auburn. That is why in my opinion he is a Gerogia lock. I cant speak for Auburn but we have Richardson and Lacy both physically strong fast and bruising collegiate backs. I was really impressed with Dee Hart. I think his commitment to Bama aided the decision to Georgia. Crowell his the speed but as with all freshman needs more muscle to take on the pounding of SEC defenses. If Crowell went with Oregon or any other PAC 10 for that matter Big Ten school he might be a Heisman finalist. But the SEC defenses are so physical.
We also have 10 starters returning on defense and with Robbie Green ( former 5 star recruit ) returning from suspension we are now 2 deep at every position. Great opportunity for Georgia to keep in state players.
It has really gotten to be a headache being back on top.

Flat Tire on I-95 in Jacksonville really..I thought that it all started with the HC and Ol’Mack is still standing..and by the by CMB’s staff averaged over 10 years with him…he wasn’t not exactly making snap decisions…CWM may put together a great coaching staff..but that really won’t be know for a couple of years. unless they win the East out of the gate..and that could happen but I’ll take a wait and see approach.and the reason for that is that you didn’t bring in a Saban or a Meyer..you got a 1st time head coach and he should be a good one but like CMR did he will have to prove it..frankly the Gators that think this is a given that UF will be once again tops in the SEC crack me up.

1-4 against top 5 teams

This blurb was in a BleacherReport article yesterday entitled “National Signing Day: Jay Rome and The Top Prospects To Blow Off Major Programs” The article goes on to say “Great players like Jay Rome and many other top high school prospects are recruited by top programs. It is every recruits’ dream to play at a big-time school, but it is hard to decide which one is for them.
Sometimes that decision is not to play at a “football factory” or the current hot college football program that dominates recruiting. At times, simply having the ability to play at home or getting early playing time is enough for a recruit to choose a school over a more major program.”
Articles like this say alot about how many see football at Georgia these days. I guess this writer thinks we’re no longer a major program. Sorta stings a bit, doesn’t it?

With the AJC’s constant, I mean constant, badmouthing of UGA’s football program, the recruiting class being put together by Mark Richt and his staff is doubly impressive. I live in Tennesse, where the Vols are largely immune to criticism by the state’s major daily newspapers. I can understand Georgia Tech being the favorite “child,” it being in Atlanta; however, I see no reason for the constant negative speculation that comes out of the AJC Sports Department. KUDOS to the the Dawgs; bring on Crowell, Jenkins, and Drew (and throw in a great offensive lineman for good measure). Maybe the impact of the AJC is less than I’d thought, but still, there is NO EXCUSE for the constant badmouthing of UGA Football.

Clearly Mark Richt’s announcement of his goal of signing a ‘Dream Team’ from Georgia was, at best, a crap shoot. I mean every year since forever, there have been top recruits from all over Georgia that have opted to go some place else other than stay in the state, Parents that have ties elsewhere…high-school coaches with the same…more aggressive recruiting from schools envious of the talent here…all mounted up to mean that kids had other options – plus, I doubt if many of them had that much state pride that trying to prove that Georgia’s talent was better than Florida’s, or Texas’s, or whoevers, meant something. So for Richt to proclaim that as a goal was setting himself up for ‘perceived’ failure no matter how good a class we end up with.
To me the kids we already have committed are a quality class, but if we don’t get Crowell, for example, the AJC, along with the DawgTrolls that hang out around here, will label it as something short of a ‘dream’.
Keep it up Mark, there are plenty of us that are with you for as long as you want to be here.

We will come out of spring ball with no direction on offense. The best players will be on the bench or redshirted. Richt landing top recruits – nothing new there. I’d take TCU’s recruits, they know how to win even without all the stars by their name.
It looks like Richt’s recruiting strategy hasn’t changed a bit – lots of flash and dash and gold stars. But is he getting the types of players who bring winning intangibles to a team, like toughness, heart and grit? The types of players who seem to fill rosters at places like Boise State, Oregon, Ohio State, and TCU? Or is this more of the same…I guess time will tell.

He is a weight lifter and he will inspire the kids to lift for success. He lives a good life, too.

To put the future of your program on the shoulders of a group of 17-18 year olds after 10 years on the job is not as much a process as it is pure panic or a scam to by time. Edumacated, all kidding aside I agree. Everyone thought Murray would start ahead of Cox as a Freshman didnt happen. We thought Richardson would start over Ingram as a Freshman. Came in and couldnt catch a pass out of the backfield. Dareus didnt really blossom until midway during sophomore year. Barely saw the field his freshman year. And look at the beating Lattimore took.

Whatever we do, just bench Caleb. Also, why can’t we use a 300 pounder to hammer in the ball on the goal line like the Bears used to do with the Fridge? Is that against the rules? I’d use that once in every game. Can’t we teach a Big Ugly to hold on to the ball and run for three yards?

Yeah- Todd Grantham is “inferior”. Richt is “inferior”. Searles is “inferior”.
Guys- Richt has won, so don’t act like he is a simpleton. Grantham coached a very good Dallas defense for years, who subsequently declined when he left. Searles is so inferior that Saban, yes, your Bama Saban tried to retain him, and then Texas decided to give him a 200K raise because he is an idiot.
Has it ever crossed your minds that sometimes things just don’t go the right way and that you can’t be great all of the time? When you are coaching 18-22 year olds, things don’t always go as planned. Put down your Madden video games and think about working with live people who make their own decisions.

Jerry: You don’t have a clue. When Ealy gets thru the line, he has no ability to out run anyone. He is not strong enough to run over anyone. He really has no moves. He is a good back, that is all.
Herchel was the fastest man on the field his whole career, he was the strongest man on the field and he could give you a move or two.
Reading stats don’t make you an expert. You were probably watching the Dukes of Hazzard when Herchel played, if you were even born yet.

Look, we should all realize that the Dream Team name is a recruiting tool used by the coaches to help get the players they want/need. It sounds good to players and fans alike, but we all know that UGA has had some excellent recruiting classes before without needing catchy titles. The bottom line is that we need the added help to keep the premier players in state more than we have in a long time, which is fine with me. But let’s not get carried away.
Even the best recruiting classes rarely use more than 6 or 7 freshmen (and most of those spend much of the year in special teams). Give these guys time to develop physically and to learn a playbook that’s a hell of a lot more complex than what they’ve ever seen before.
chazzo

I still like Ealey. He runs hard. the fumbles were unfortunate, but at least one was due to him stretching out with the ball , striving to get more. Caleb has just never impressed me all that much. He doesn’t seem to have that drive and desire. Both these guys still have a lot of potential. Maybe having Crowell would light a fire. It is suffice to say that Crowell will not be a solo, overused back like Lattimore.
If you think about it, it is ideal. There is a supporting cast, but not an overwhelming cast like Bama. he would be lucky to get playing time there.
FT on 95,
Some of these players may not have an immediate impact. Some will. The indirect impact of excitement, motivation, and competition is huge, however.

Please pardon my skepticism. We’ve had top 10 recruiting classes pretty much for Richt’s tenure (with the exception of a few). During that time we have some of the best recruits, we lose to teams like Vandy, Kentucky, Colorado, Miss. State, and Central Florida. Of course not mentioning the yearly butt-whippings administered by the Florida Gators. And you certainly can count on getting blown off the field a few more times in any given season as well.

If Richt can’t even get to the SEC Title game with Stafford (#1 overall pick), Moreno (1st rd), Massaquoi (2nd rd – starting), Allen (3rd rd – starting), Ellerbe (Ravens D), Owens, Green (top 5 pick), Houston (1st rd), and Atkins (all 16 games – 3 sacks as rookie); what in the world makes you think that the supposed “Dream Team” will be any different?

It’s great getting awesome recruits, but means absolutely nothing when they’re poorly coached and under-developed. Being optimistic is one thing….being delusional is quite another.

Is it possible to recruit some “Dream team” coaches.

We’ve had dream teams before and a lot of just great recruiting class and look where we are. Dream teams won’t help with a lazy and bad head coach. It’s not going to be pretty next year but at least we’ll have some good athletes for the next head coach. Maybe it won’t take us 10 years to recover from Richt.

Whoops!
But….this could be a catalyst to great things. Its great and badly needed news for the Dawgs. “Coup” is a good word.

I’m reading a lot of negative crap from the same so-called fans who were saying Murray was too short and injury prone to compete. I think you will be wrong again.

Can we have a rule in a grown man’s sports blog that such acronyms as ROTFLMFAO and LOL be left in the Little Princess chat rooms?

falcon 34, nobody said this would be a better team that the one you mentioned. That team finished in the top 10 once and top 2 once. We think this dream team can be a catalyst to be better than the team that just went 6-7. That’s what matter today, to improve. Some of us try to keep it in the world of reality and not compare apples to oranges for no apparent reason.
But if you insist, perhaps that Richt HAS been able to get to the SEC championship game with other (list of) names on other team would be “what in the world” reason to suspect he is capable of doing so.

Altahama — Respectfully as possible here, but same old excuses given for Richt by you. I know you’re a master at rationalizing away arguments such as mine with how you frame certain issues (top 2, top 10) and how this can be a positive spark to do better than 6-7. We’ve really set the bar at just improving over a 6 win season now? 2007 was a fantastic year, one in which we still didn’t win the SEC because of a blowout in Tennessee and a loss to a really terrible South Carolina team at home. We also destroyed Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. Since then, we’ve been on a nose-dive as a program.
We follow that with preseason #1 and not only do we lose 3 games, but two of them are absolute embarrassing blowouts, one of them at home, and we lost to an inferior Georgia Tech team at HOME. My point is this simple, since I’m sure you’ll try to re-direct and frame it for an excuse for Richt: our coaches DO NOT develop the talent that we get, which is plenty enough since we’re ranked top 10 in recruiting. Also, don’t even try the line about me not being a “true fan,” because I’m a grad and a season ticket holder. I simply love my University and football team more than one man, and I’ve lost faith in Richt’s ability to turn it around; no more, no less.

Whatever guys, McGarity has already shot the hole in the bottom of the boat. CMR will be the captain in 2011. Help us bail or get out.

Im a little disappointed in McGarity because that poor Volleyball coach caught the brunt of our incompetent football coaching staff. I thought surely with the volleyball coach being let go so would some of the clowns on the football coaching staff would have been shown the door as well.

Finally, a good latter part of week and weekend for DawgNation. Not to overreact to high school seniors verbally committing, but each of these fine young men looks excellent in his respective highlight clips. As many have said, Isaiah Crowell, Ray Drew and John Jenkins are pieces of the puzzle needed. Also agreed: we need a foot in five hole, nastiness, hard-nosed O line coach to open some running lanes and give AM time to carve up D’s. One thing is without question: CMR is a man of his word; examine the history. He’s not a man of hyperbole but truth. When he says “we’re really close,” I tend to believe him. Point being: young players out there: NOW is the time to jump on board a program moving back where it has been and should be. Know this: true Dawg fans will always treat you the way you deserve and desire. In closing, thanks are in order for RTR and his posts. I work with a Bama grad and naturally he’s as die-hard as Dawg fans on this board. But he too is classy and respectful when talking about UGA, even in our struggles. As he notes, “We were there not too long ago.” This attitude by he and RTR is what makes college football the greatest of all. The passion never runs low in the SEC and it exists well with respect and camaraderie in conference.
Go Dawgs!!!

I didn’t rationalize a thing, I gave very straight forward facts. Nor did you dispute any of them.
I never said the bar was ONLY and ever going to be doing better than 6-7. (so no point in arguing with me that’s what I really meant) But we were 6-7. Whatever the bar is, it’s better than 6-7 is it not? Its going to take good recruits to achieve that SOOOOOOO…most folks think these guys are a good thing. You don’t?
BTW, I fail to see where anything I said was an excuse for anything or anybody. If anything is an making excuse it’s representing your opinion to be fact.
Also you can search 5 years of quotes from me and NEVER find a single time where I ever said a person was not a real fan for being honestly critical. Don’t even try to throw that straw man out here. If you are confident in your comments, you wouldn’t feel the need to cover them.
