What are key fixes Dogs must make for Richt to keep his job?

Stacy Searels' underperforming offensive lines have been a big problem for the Dogs. (Georgiadogs.com)

Stacy Searels' underperforming offensive lines have been a big problem for the Dogs. (Georgiadogs.com)

The list of things Mark Richt and his staff have to fix for the coming season in order to keep their jobs at UGA is pretty long. Chances are they won’t be able to get it all done, even under the best of circumstances.

But while the Dogs might not be quite as “close” as Richt touts them to be, they do have Aaron Murray and some other talented players, and if a few things break Georgia’s way a turnaround to challenge for the SEC East is certainly within Richt’s reach.

But in order for that to have a chance of happening the head coach and his staff absolutely have to get a few key things done. And those keys are:

Line play has to improve on both sides of the ball. On defense, if Georgia can land JUCO beast John Jenkins, who recently pulled out of his commitment to Okie State, it will be a big step toward fixing one of the major weaknesses of Todd Grantham’s defense: the lack of an effective nose guard. On offense, Stacy Searels has seen his troops badly underperform for most of the past two seasons. It’s time for him to prove he’s the coach UGA thought it was getting when he was hired away from LSU.

The Dogs have to develop an effective running game. The offensive line play has been a big negative factor here, but Georgia’s backs also just haven’t gotten it done. Caleb King can’t seem to stay in the lineup and Washaun Ealey seems more concerned with running his mouth than developing consistency running the ball. (It doesn’t help that Mike Bobo favors that running-back-by-committee thing and tends to insert little Carlton Thomas at the worst times.) Signing Isaiah Crowell definitely would be a game-changer for the Dogs.

Get the defense off the field on third down. Georgia ranked dead last in the SEC this past season in third-down defense efficiency. Plugging the middle with a big man like Jenkins no doubt will help in that regard, but the Dogs need more pressure from the linebackers and smarter play in the secondary. Time for Grantham to earn that big salary.

Georgia has to be stronger and better conditioned. Getting pushed around on the line and fading in the fourth quarter will pretty much guarantee you don’t win the close games. Richt is betting that “old school” Joe Tereshinski can whip the Dogs into shape by putting the focus more on hard work than mentoring. It’s a good sign that Christian Robinson was tweeting yesterday about having just been through the “hardest workout ever at Georgia!” Let’s hope there’s more than just talk there.

Any other “must” fixes you see in order for Richt and company to still be around in Athens in 2012?

Now that CMR is studying football, I hope we have hired a good tutor to help with his studies. He should be in a required study hall at least three hours a day.

Also might be helpful to hire someone with a computer to keep track of court dates, academic appointments, driver license srevocations, etc.

Stop recruiting the worst character players imaginable, see former Linebacker Robinson arrested again.
Stop trying a stupid offensive tactic that obviously doesn’t work, play action fools no one when you can’t run the ball.
Find a running back that can actually carry the ball for more than 3 plays without calling for a breather. See Maricic that plays both ways for Stanford.
Stop letting Bacarri Rambo play on Defense, he is the worst tackler in the history of organized football.
Stop going brain dead in obvious situations. See TD Run vs. Ga Tech, Long pass receptions against Arkansas, if you are going to recruit stupid players, you have to tell them what to do/ expect in every situation.
Stop letting your players run the program. See Aaron Murray wearing gloves in the bowl game when he hadn’t worn them all year. I still don’t get that one.
Oh and one last thing. Stop letting your players celebrate on the field and pose for ESPN when they make a big hit AFTER the opposing offense had just gained 30 yards.

A few salient comments:

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last five BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. During that period, UGA did not even win its SEC division.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

What a laugh. Of course these things have to happen to be a national contender. But to make the statement that CMR has to do all these things to save his job is crazy, or the AJC has taken control of personnel at UGA. Why couldn’t you just say to do these things would improve the team and make them contenders again. AJC writers are not going to dictate if and when CMR loses his job, if he ever does.

Next year will be UGA’s best shot at getting back to where they were earlier in Richt’s career. They will finally have a TEAM unit rather than relying solely on one player (like we have the past few years with Moreno, Stafford, and Green). Everyone in the Coference now know Murray is a good player, so you’ll have more attention on getting to him next season, but if the O-Line (which is bringing back 3 of 5 starters..including Sturdivent) can get it going, Murray should be fine and be able to use both his arm and legs in the games.

Also, get King and Ealey off the field. I really liked your comment about how Ealey runs his mouth more than the ball on the field and I couldn’t agree more Bill. Also, Ealey has major problems with fumbling the ball. If we get Crowell, we should put Ken Malcome and Crowell as our one and two and King and Ealey as three and four. Malcome was redshirted last year, but from what I’ve heard he’s a very physical and tough runner up the middle who has great burst. Crowell, well, we know about his abilities. Carlton Thomas should never be used to run the ball-he should be used for swing passes and screens (hell, I’m still waiting for Bobo and Richt to have the novel idea of using TWO backs in the backfield at the same time. It would definitely open up the offense)..

Receivers will be fine without AJ. I think it’s a better thing he left so the offense doesn’t solely revolve around him but now can revolve around ALL the talented receivers we possess. I know we haven’t seen much from the other receivers over the past few years, but that’s because we relied too heavily on #8. If you throw it, they will come! As well, Orson Charles should be utilized WAY more than he has been the past few years (whatever happened to lining him up in the slot like Bobo and RIcht said they would? I think he’d a be a very imposing target for an opposing corner to cover)..

Our defense will grow in the second year under Grantham (did anyone else notice the complete flip in turnover margin from two years ago to this year’s defense?) Boykin coming back will help the secondary, Alec Ogletree can only get better, Branden Smith gets better every year at the other corner (and if Damian Swann comes in and immediately starts at corner, I think he could be a huge help as a freshman..by just watching some of his high school film, he’s a great cover corner). Our linebackers will be bolstered by the addition of Jarvis Jones and the speedy Richard Samuel (who is also not afraid of hitting hard). If Houston returns, we could have some of the best linebackers in the country.

The big question next year will be that nose guard position. The ends are fine, the outside linebackers we have are fine, but the nose guard is the main problem we’ll have next year if we can’t get John Jenkins.

We will FINALLY have a TEAM next year and not just one special player. Plus, our schedule is favorable for making a run (Auburn, South Carolina, and Kentucky at home), the Boise game will basically be a home game with the fan ratio that will be in the Dome, and UF will be down next year due to new coaches and transition (plus, we won’t have to play that gimmicky offense anymore..)

UGA will be either really, really good in 2011, or completely implode on itself causing Richt to get fired after. I’m thinking the former…

1.)Richt must go back to calling the plays

2.)Richt must take charge of the football team(ties in with #1)

One of the big things UGA has to accomplish is to become more physical. That happens by scrimmaging. Run based scrimmaging. That would kill a lot of birds with one stone. It would toughen up both lines of scrimmage, benefit the play-action pass they so love, give the team a more over-all competetive spirit, and toughen the team up. Please,no more THUD.

It’s a sad state of affairs. Lack of discipline is the single biggest issue. The players obviously have no fear of Richt. We could start with the band wagon fans getting off the wagon. Go get on Tech’s wagon, or the Barn wagon or the Bammer wagon. UGA will be fine. The inability to report the real story is the problem with the AJC because you can’t find anything out or investigate to get the real underlying story. For starters, the only way to right the ship in Athens is to get rid of Bobo as play caller and Richt as Head Coach. Bring in McGarity’s best friend from his UF days – Bob Stoops. Bring some passion back to the sidelines and kick players off that are troublemakers/can’t seem to stay out of jail.

You failed to mention coaching as an area of improvement. Even Richt admitted that he was outcoached by Paul Johnson in the Tech game. Obviously we don’t want our players arrested, but can we give it a rest? Every player who was arrested was given an appropriate amount of discipline – there’s not much more that can be done to discipline 20 year-olds. It is going to be interesting to hear the same folks who complain non-stop about our discipline “problem” – which is no worse than any other major program – argue that Richt screwed up by getting rid of Mettenberger when he becomes LSU’s starting QB.

CMR is the best coach we’ve had since CVD (arguably, and statistically, better) – all programs in all level of sports go through downtimes and have years that are less than satisfying, especially when a fan base has high expectations, as we rightfully do (of course, they are so high because of the Dawgs’ success under CMR, a fact that seems to go unrecognized). We lost 7 games last year by an average of 8 points per loss (take out the AU loss and you’re talking about 6.5/loss). We were too close in those games for the sky is falling mentality that I read about day-in and day-out on these blogs (the undwerwhelming effort shown in the bowl game was the only time all year that I was truly embarassed). The level of pessimism is astounding.

Things will get turned around.

Number one for UGA officials is to stop giving home field advantage to Florida each year by only playing in Jacksonville. Either alternate with Atlanta’s Georgia Dome or Athens/Gainesville, Florida. Would Florida agree to play in the Georgia Dome each year? I think not. The close games always seem to go to Florida playing in their own backyard.

Derek Dooley, son of the great Vince Dooley, seemed to be able to turn around the Vols near the end of the season. Georgia seemed to choke in close games. If Richt hadn’t beaten Georgia Tech in 2010, I think he would have been looking for a new job now.

Stop recruiting guys with juvenile records and restore some discipline to the team. Georgia seems destined for a 7-4 mediocre 2011 season.

Attitude! Attitude! Attitude! I know these guys are college students and like to have a good time, but they need to take personal responsibility. When somebody wants to fight, think of your buddies on the football team. When you hit a car, you don’t run and try to hide. If you have a court date, you show up. We are recruiting guys who don’t have good character. I know these guys aren’t saints but their overwhelming desire to suceed in football has got to override their temptation. For some reason, Richt and company are failing at this. I know it happens at other schools, but we need to try something new, and I don’t know what it is.

We haven’t had any gas in the 2nd half all year especially the 4th quarter but I think it’s deeper than that. Bring back running gassers and forget injury prone players. Practice hard and physical. TEACH the fundamentals of run, block and tackle. (teach Bobo play calling and aggressive offense, Richt too).

#1 No more favortism. Mr.Richt need to play his best players rather they or freshmen, sophomore, juniors or seniors.

#2 Strength and Conditioning. Our interior line on both sides of the ball are weak. A strong offensive line will open up lanes for Ealey and give Murray time to complete his passes. A strong defensive line will create opportunity for the secondary and they will make qbs life miserable.

#3 Run the ball on 1st and 2nd down 90% of the time.

Richt’s record is 40 wins and 3 losses when he gets a 100 yard rusher. I’ve been saying this for years, and it falls on deaf (Mike Bobo) ears. The SEC winners last 3 seasons RUN THE BALL, and Bobo, the ex-QB, loves to THROW THE BALL. Last 3 SEC Winners have averaged anywhere from 215 to 280 yards RUSHING per game. Bobo’s down around 150 a game. Richt’s only 2 wins against Florida were when he got a 100 yard rusher. The problem IS NOT the O-LINE, the RB’s are both averaging over 5 ypc. The problem is BOBO DOESN’T CALL ENOUGH RUNNING PLAYS.

Use These PROVEN SOLUTIONS to turn it around fast:
1- Auburn plan-
Find a QB with 1 year of experience as a winner like Newton who can run and pass
Solution:
Let dual threat Murray run it, have dual threat Logan Gray as the #2

2- Florida plan-
Find a slot guy like Percy who can change games, also use your TE
Solution:
Move Branden Smith to offense and let him have 10 touches a game, let TE have 10 touches a game

3- Alabama Plan:
Get a JUCO NT with experience to stop the run, and have the best strength coach
Solution:
Go get John Jenkins and let’s hope the new S & C coach can bulk these guys up in the off-season and condition them physically and mentally for the 4th quarter

4- South Carolina Plan
Get an RB who can run it 40x a game and average @5 ypc
Solution:
UGA has 2 RB’s who average over 5 ypc, just give the 1 that’s the best the ball 40x a game

I agree with these, but off-the-field discipline is also a key factor. How many games did key players miss due to off-the-field issues this year? Too many.

As for the running game, Ealey has flashes of greatness but just as many bonehead plays. We need a great, steady and dependable RB to kick start our running game. Like Isiah Crowell (spelling?). I’d kick Caleb King off the team. It’s one thing to forget a speeding ticket. It’s another to forget classes. Also, let’s admit it, he’s just not that good an RB.

As for 3rd down defense, weren’t we better on 3rd and short than we were on 3rd and long? I’d be interested to see the stats on that.

I agree with your points (both sides of our line, running game, conditioning). Also, we need a better KILLER INSTINCT on offense. We could benefit from a Top 10-caliber Offensive Coordinator. Too often, Coach Bobo’s playcalling can go from inspired to predictable to inane from one drive to the next. We will stop doing something that the defense has NOT stopped, just to strive for some elusive “balance”. Look at the Tech game this year — in the 1st half, we throw 11-14, 220 yds, and Tech seems to have no answer. So, in the 2nd half, what do we do — throw it 5 times (4-5). Coach Richt even said after the game that we probably should have thrown more. But, AFTER the game is a bad time to realize that……

The page of our playbook that says “if we throw an incomplete pass on 1st down, we MUST run it between the tackles at least 80% of the time” should be THROWN away. How many times must we leave our QB with 3rd and very long!?!? …. Bobo is too inconsistent – he might be better suited as QB Coach and a recruiter. No, averaging 30 points over 7 games is NOT good enough – we lost 2 of those 7 games and tanked against Central Florida. GO DAWGS!!

About Bobo, I agree that he sometimes calls bonehead plays, but what OC doesn’t?

We weren’t complaining about Bobo when Stafford and Moreno were running the offense (Bobo took over fulltime as OC in 2006, if I recall correctly, so he helmed our ‘06, ‘07 and ‘08 offenses, too).

So our offensive woes aren’t solely Bobo’s fault. You can’t do ANYTHING without good O-Line play, and sometimes players don’t just make plays (see Ealey’s fumble against MSU on the goal line). So lighten up with the vitriol for Bobo. It’s not all his fault.

The offensive play calling needs to be more aggressive for one.

The O-line has been pretty bad over the last couple of years, but a lot of that comes from a lack of S&C. Hopefully, the right people are now in place to get that straightened out. If the S&C improves, then that alone will make the entire team a hell of alot better – bet on it

I agree with Bill. I would also like to add to call plays that are working. Too often, the running backs will actually run for very positive yards and then another running play will not be call again that quarter. Also if a running back if doing well, don’t take him out! Is he tired from 2 carries? Why the 3rd string back in on third down? Bobo calls a game like a flag football game.

Your QB has to be able to hit the deep ball with accuracy, otherwise, teams will bring 8 in the box to stop the run like SC did against Georgia. I don’t think Murray can do that–ever. Maybe Mason or Lemay but Murray had his chance and failed miserably.

1- Have a QB who consistently connects on deeps balls against SEC teams

Ealey had 133 td’s and ran for 8100 yards in high school, Crowell can’t touch those numbers. Just have to commit to running the ball 40x a game to your top back, like Lattimore did.

Keys to improving offense

1) forget about being balanced on offense(find our strength and utilize it). Stupid to try to run a screen pass or draw on 3rd and 20 when you’ve got the best wide receiver in the country. Bobo tries to get too cute with his play calling and tries to outsmart the other team by calling low percentage gimmick plays.

2) OL needs to establish identity. It’s tough to be excellent in both passing and running blocking. we need to identify which we are on offense. i say we establish our team run first and pass second.

3) We need to run more spread or shotgun plays. These formations take advantage of AM running ability and also help the offensive line out.

4) No more 20-25 play action passes per game. Set a strict limit of 2-3.

5) Sign Isaiah Crowell…He could be a game changer like Lattimore.

All good points, indeed, if not also the most obvious. I’ve been screaming for at least four years that Searels needs to go, as does Bryan McClendon as RB coach. Why is a former WR coaching RB’s to begin with. Nothing personal to either of them, but let’s face it, they haven’t done squat since 2005. Even in 2007, it took the OL and RB’s half a season to get their butts in gear, and by then the damage had been done losing poorly to USC & TN, costing them any chance they had at all to play for SEC or BCS titles. I still say they were the best team in the nation at the end of 2007, but that reitterates my point. even when things do go right, why does it take half a dang season to get it going? Theses guys need to be ready game 1 through game 14 (if they get that many).

I was disappointed in the lack of pressure put on the QB this season, although defense as a whole did improve. Biggest underachiever by far was the OL though.

Oh and what’s this about Ealey running his mouth? Not sure what you’re talking about.

Merge the two teams from Georgia and Georgia Tech; fire Paul Johnson and Mark Richt; quit making Aaron Murray sound like a world beater when he is of course only about average at best; hire a quality football coach who is a student of the game; dismiss anyone on the team with any arrest record and quit recruiting anyone with a thug mentality (ask the Braves how important it is that they measure character first in their drafts and abilities second);

Defensively, i think we will see much improvement in year 2 under Grantham. We have alot of DL returning and should see improvement. The entire secondary returns and we should see drastic improvement there. LB’s worry me but i”m hopeful JJ and RS will be stars like they are projected to be.. If JH returns, we could potentially have a dominant defense.

CMR must win 10 games min next season. In those 10 wins he must beat UF, Boise St, SC. It’s a tall order but he put himself in a deep hole. Personally, I would love to see him rebound. As stated in other blogs CMR just has not given any indication that he is up for the challenge.

Coaches have to the put players in position to win games and the players have to step up and make plays when they are there. i.e. catch INT’s or a key third catch.. the play calling for the most part was terrible, yeah we scored 30 points or more for however many games but look at who did it aganist.. this defense wasn’t great but it wasn’t all bad either, the colorado, miss. st., ark. fl. even crtl fl. games we were in the games with the offense not being able to produce yardarge to kick game winning fields goals or score touchdowns… there is reason why billy bennett hold uga record for fields in a season 2002 it’s because those guys made plays and we have 2002 sec championship to prove it… everyone is making valid points. we just have to find a way to get better, and hard work is the best way to do.. i’m just saying

I know we’ve got all the answers on this blog, so I’m feeling good about CMR’s chances to turn this around. But all I want to see is a hardnosed team that’s well prepared, well conditioned, and plays with intensity. They’re going to lose some games, because even at their best, it still comes down to the quality of the athlete on the field, and UGA has some work to do there that won’t be finished in a couple years. I take no pride in seeing UGA lose well, but if they play the way we demand of our team, I’ll get past it. If they can’t measure up to that standard, then all else that CMR might do won’t matter.

dawg in lex–your #5 is indicative of how uneducated and ignorant our own fan base is in re athens police…cops are involved in everything….athens pd arrests football players for traffic tickets while simply ticketing regular citizens of all ages for the exact same violations….athens pd are under pressure from their chief to do this…mandated years ago under Knapp and never changed….most of the routine, traffic related arrests should be simple tickets and should not be considered as “stuff involving cops” and most arrests would not have occurred in Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge, Fayetteville and other places….this does not make the players actions any more disciplined or less disruptive, but people need to be aware of the difference involved with athens pd…if our leadership(head coach) was stronger, something would have been worked out by now to at least level the playing field…you brilliant critics need to get your heads out of the sand and at least be realistic about what exists in athens with the macho pd over using and sometimes abusing their immense power….none of this crap will make any difference to anyone with authority….either we compete until the end for the championship next year or Greg will find another head coach

I’m well aware of the Athens PD. I also know that if you don’t give them a reason to arrest you, they won’t.

That should be real easy to explain to the players.

Stop making excuses. The kids either get in trouble or they don’t. Stay out of the bars. Don’t get baited into a fight. Check your dam driver’s license and insurance to see if you can legally drive.

The best solution long term is to build “Bulldog Lodge” to house the football team like Kentucky has Wildcat Lodge to house the basketball team. Keep them under wraps.

Definitely, more cowbell. Also, fewer running plays up the middle on 2nd and 10 after an incomplete pass. Less of Carlton Thomas “pounding” the ball between the tackles for 1 yard with his beffy 175 pound frame………… More of Orson Charles (who averaged only 2 touches per game). I agree, we definitely need a strong running game, but until our offensive line performs up to expectations, we can’t rely upon the run. We lack a game-changing RB, and definitely lack a game-changing offensive line. Give us a Top 10 Offensive Coordinator, and a Top 10 offensive line, and more cowbell, and that’s all we need……….

Special Teams Play

January 13th, 2011
12:51 pm

Whatever happened to our special teams play? The first few years under Richt, we were known to aggressively rush the punter and blocked quite a few of them. Even the ones we missed, we put enough pressure on the punter to alter. Not so coincidentally, we ran a few punts back for TD’s. Ever since we started to focus on returning punts, we don’t run any back, and even worse, have had several fake punts successfully run on us because of our hurry to get back and protect the returner. At the very least, going after the punter sends a subconscious message to our team that we’re AGGRESSIVE instead of passive (like not going for it on 4th and one from the 3 yard line), which can affect all facets of the team’s mentality. Creating some big plays on special teams used to be a plus for Georgia, and those plays have mysteriously disappeared right along with our coach’s cahones.

January 13th, 2011

It’s one thing to throw around the future of the coaches, but lay off the kids. They have made no more or no less mistakes than any other college kids (on the field or off). Many of them are being mis-utilized or under-utilized. Trent Richardson from Alabama is probably one of the top ten backs in the country, but he didn’t start or split playing time because Mark Ingram IS the starting TB. Find a back and give him 30 carries a game. Georgia was Tailback U until Bobo became the coordinator. There will never be another Herschel Walker. UGA played for the national title all three years that he played here. But can we at least get a Terrell Davis, Garrison Hearst, or Patrick Pass?Caleb King doesn’t need to be off the team. He needs to be returning kick-offs and punts. Move Branden Smith to receiver on 3rd down situations. Use a 2-back offense from time to time. And if my 7th grade football team knows how to stop the option (held 3 option teams scoreless), your defensive coordinator should know the same. You not only have to know coaching strategy. You have to know what your players are capable of. Richt and his staff do not. And with BCS champs coming from Alabama, Auburn, Florida and LSU, it’s time for UGA to put itself back on the map. Richt just needs to decide if he will be on board.

Time-outs don't carry over.....

January 13th, 2011
12:53 pm

How about PLAYING TO WIN! Richt used to do this but not in the last few seasons. Case-in-point…the Liberty Bowl.
1) The first drive – you drive 90+ yards down to UCF 2 yard-line and kick a field goal???? You could see at that moment on the side-line that the players lost confidence in the coaching staff. Go for it!
2) Just before half – There are 40 seconds left on the clock, you have two time-outs, the best receiver in the country, one of the best kickers in the country, and a quarterback who can move the ball (preferably without the glove). Give these guys a shot to try and put points up on the board. Calling a running play and taking a knee is unacceptable.

Grab some sack and Play To Win!

It does not matter what we or anyone else thinks needs to be done because this STUBBORN AND INCOMPETENT “COACH” has proven time after time that he is either unable or unwilling to make the necessary changes to improve things. The best thing that could happen is for a season rocky enough to force his termination so that Aaron Murray’s last 2 years wont be wasted like Eric Zeier’s was with Ray Gump,er Goff.

“Just me” – great point about Trent Richardson, an unbelievable runner, not getting to tote the rock because there is just simply somebody better. Our commitment to the running back by committee is evidence of the fact that we don’t have a dominant runner. Once we get that type of runner, you’re right, commit to the running game, and play with toughness. I don’t know if we’re truly capable of associating our Dawgs with toughness at the moment.

Macclenny_dawg

I agree Bill but you have to add toughness and special teams!!! We have to rush the punter if we put Gray back there to fair catch it!!! Special teams is 1/3 of the game!!! Be more aggressive sometimeswhen you have momentum go for the juggler!!! Playcalling has to quit being so predictable. Just because you put a gameplan together doesn’t mean you can’t adjust it!!! You are absolutely correct in your assessment. In addition to casting aside in the offensive scheme the notion of “running back by committee”, Coach Richt needs to strongly consider throwing away his erroneous belief in granting a redshirt to a running back. Falcon 34

Good artcile Bill.

Where to begin. Can I just say clean house and start over? No, that would be too simple and intelligent. So here we go………..

3) Joe T might be the answer, but a rational person could’ve seen for a long while that our players simply don’t match up to our many of our SEC brethren in terms of strength and speed. Whatever magic worked for Van Halanger when Richt first got here, has long since evaporated. Compare even our guys from our first Richt years: Musa Smith, Jon Stinchomb, Thomas Davis to our players now. Used to be big and strong, now we’re slow and weak. Again, none of this stuff will matter if they know they’re not held accountable by their Head Coach.

4) Attitude. Rule is made that if any player runs his mouth on the field, talks back to a coach, commits a stupid personal foul, dances around on the sideline, he’s on the bench. No questions asked. The players respect the coaches, listen to them, play their butts, stop showboating, or sit their butts on the pine. Period.

more to come………….

1) Buck stops at the top with Coach Richt. No more excuses about anything. Everything that goes on with the University of Georgia Football team stops at his door. He’s the one making almost $3 million dollars a year. He’s the one with the HC next to his name. Period. Take responsiblity for your football team and stop rationalizing that its OK to lose and get beat.

Will

January 13th, 2011
1:09 pm

I think UGA should be a lock to win 9-10 games next year.
If you disagree, who do you think should be favored to beat Georgia?

We have the best returning quarterback in the SEC and have a boatload of red shirt highly recruited players waiting in the wings. Graham’s highly touted 3-4 defense will be in its second year and should be high powered.

We have a very favorable schedule. Auburn will be a 8-9 win team, Florida and Miss State much the same. Boise is losing half of its starters and, after all, is a mid-level team that we embarassed several years ago in Athens. South Carolina is the only team on our schedule that should be better than us but we have them between the hedges.

I begin each year assuming UF will beat us because they always do. I’ll add USC to the loss column and would guess one the following three – Auburn, Tennessee or MSU will get us. That’s nine wins at the very least.

If Coach Richt cannot win nine games next year, I think he will resign.

Falcon 34

January 13th, 2011
1:11 pm

2) Accountability in terms of discipline. This random discipine consequences has got end. Kick some kids off the team, while giving others 15 chances to redeem themselves. It’s an honor to playu for the University of Georgia and if you don’t take pride in it because you’re too self-absorbed and narcisstic because you’re “better” than the team, take it somewhere else and give me plenty of 3 star recruits who won’t get outworked and know its a priveledge to play for UGA. Many of the players simply don’t respect him or playing for the University of Georgia. Gone are the days of having guys like Pollack, Greene, and Shockley.

Richt had his shot in ‘02 and ‘07.

He blew it. He lost to a Ron Zook Florida in ‘02. In ‘07 we failed to score a TD at home versus South Carolina and lost.

Those were his two chances to make the title game and we wet the bed.

Seems like you covered everything in the article Bill. CMR does need to assume the OC duties and run a more aggressive style of offense. The speed of the offense is too slow and gives the other teams defense time to adjust. A no huddle offense would be better. Getting the right recruits for the DL will be a big help and we need to start recruiting a big NT for next year also. He must offer more recruits earlier to have a chance at getting better players and the bottom line is CMR needs to become a better and more demanding coach. He must demand more from the coaches and the players. The ho-hum attitude and the excuses need to go. We have now until Sept. to get ready for Boise State and there should be no excuses about preparation. Put the best players in the game and not just because that player may be a senior. I know everybody is tired of hearing this, but Bobo needs to go. This is not the Training Academy for OCs. This team needs someone that can do the entire job as the OC. That includes recruiting, and not just QBs, but for the entire offense, RB, WR, TE and OL. Bobo does not know how to make adjustments or how to devise an offensive scheme to break down the opposing teams defense. CMR can settle for nothing less than winning.

Here’s what UGA has to do in order to be relevant in the SEC next year…NOTHING! Isn’t that exactly what Richt is doing? He has chosen to spend more time to “be on the cutting edge” and “get UGA back to prominence”, by changing absolutely, positively, NOTHING!

Furthermore, his AD is enabling him to spend more time with football related issues and less time with “administrative” challenges that has hampered Mark from being all that he can be (and by the way, what he’s being PAID to do @ $2mill a year). We will be back to playing “UGA football” and back to National Prominence by doing what CHAMPIONS do…NOTHING!

@Buh bye
In the span of SEC national championships, you failed to list that UGA finished #2 in the final AP poll that year. In 2002, the dawgs lost one game and got no help from anyone like LSU, like UF, did when they made it to the BCS title game. Only one team gets in and unfotunately this unrealistic fan base expects “if they can do it, why can’t we?” Not as easy as it looks. Coach Richt has had teams on the doorstep in the past, just couldn’t either put it all together for a magical season ala Auburn and Bama, or get some help along the way, ala LSU and Florida. Sure there are things to fix on and off the field at UGA. Coach Richt knows that and if he doesn’t fix them, this season will probably be his last. But as a UGA grad it would be nice to see a little support from the fan base while they’re trying to right the ship. A lot of mouth breathers on these boards I believe just want to see Richt fail so they can bring in a “better” coach. Who’s to say that whatever coach you bring in will be better. Idiots on these boards always assume getting that 5 star recruit is better than what we have and will instantly make us better. Grass isn’t always greener people.

Richt is the same guy he was when he was compiling a great record a few years ago. What changed was the arrival of elite recruiters in the persons of Spurrier at South Carolina, Saban at Alabama, and at the time, Kiffin at Tennessee. And now FSU is back on fire in recruiting with Jimbo Fisher.

Richt’s low-key personality probably isn’t the most effective for recruiting in the heightened competitive environment, which now requires some real salesmanship. And it can’t be good that Weiss and Quinn will be Muschamp’s coordinators at Florida… Four- and five-star kids will salivate at the chance of getting a head-start on learning the pro game with the Gators.

*1-8 vs teams finishing in top 5
*3-9 vs teams finishing in top 10
*Total record against teams finishing in top 25
*22 wins vs 37 losses

One team can win two BCS with 2 different coaches (LSU – Saban, Miles), one team can win 2 with same coach (Florida) and was 1 game away from 3, one coach can win BCS with two different teams (Saban – LSU, Bama), and one team can win a BCS after firing a coach who had been successful back in the day in a highly controversial decision (Auburn).

Ask one question to potential recruits.
Where do you see yourself in three years?
If the answer is anything but the NFL leave immediately.
The only way I would have dismissed Dowtin from the team is if he lost the fight in the bar. Otherwise, he is back. Also, I don’t want high character choir boys, I want jokers you would walk down a dark alley with. Or the guys waiting in the dark alley. I want poor, hungry, tough guys from bad neighborhoods who have no other way out. Oh, and a coach who feels his job is in jeopardy.

What Florida and LSU did on the field for themselves proved worthy enough for them to play in the title game. And even without those particular titles, both those schools have stamped championship seaons for themselves in the recent past.

Strickland, your UGA team was freaking No. 1 in the land to start 2008 (or whatever year that was), yet your coaching staff was too dayum busy jumping in pools being one of the “guys” when he should have been developing a SOUND defensive scheme.

End of story. The Dawgs were soft and got smacked down. Everyone would love Newton and that big defensive dude if they had worn the Red and Black. They probably would have loved to have been Dawgs, but Mssrs Richt and Garner did not try very hard to recruit them because they didn’t fit into Richt’s feeble and stupid “system.” So shut up about Auburn. In the 3 Herschel Walker years, they won 1 NC, 3 SEC titles, and 3 top 5 rankings. In the other 27 years they won 0 NC, 1 SEC, and ! top 5 ranking.

So, after deducting the 3 Walker years (1980,1981,1982), the Bulldogs won only 1 SEC title and 1 top five ranking in the 70’s 80’s & 90’s! Georgia is a lot more relevant under RICHT!

. Why does everyone pin the hopes of this football program on Crowell? I agree that he is a good back, but it wasn’t that long ago that the UGA faithful had another “2nd coming of the running back Jesus” and that was in ‘96 when we signed Jasper Sanks. Yeah, boy he turned out to be a real world beater. What high school did he go to again? Oh yeah! That’s right, THE SAME ONE. Crowell may come to UGA, he may not. He may go on to be an amazingly unstoppable force at another school, or he may not. Personally I would rather have Tauren Poole who plays for TN, that went to Stephens County and received 0 offers from UGA than either of the pathetic, “please i just ran the ball 2 times in a row i need to go dance on the sideline and get coddled by the trainers” backs that we have now. Crowell or No Crowell, we need to commit to the run and fine someone to carry the load. There are other good backs out there. Please stop putting him on a pedestal because you read some scouting report or watched a YouTube video.

Get a head coach who has the ability, the desire, and the determination to win. Richt lacks all three of these necessary qualities. Hard to disagree with any of this. We have become a second rate team that can’t finish that has consistently recruited thugs with no character to come play and then fall our or commit another crime. And then they go sign with the LSU’s of the world. First, I would fire Bobo for his lousy play calling. Has anyone else seen what progressive offensive’s other teams are putting on the field. Second, I would then upgrade our line play and running backs and linebackers and saftey’s and cornerbacks and……..so you see a pattern here. It all comes down to Richt and his ability to coach these kids and recruit better. Give him one more year.

Seriously, the S&C program has been a problem since the beginning. Richt’s early teams were always the walking wounded by the end of camp. I used to believe they must have been working them too hard in practice. That wasn’t the case. Instead, they were not in good shape. So what does Richt do? He eased up on the full contact and amount of practice time to compensate. Brilliant!!

How about consistency? It seems like one day our offense is lighting it up but our defense can’t stop anyone. The next outing our defense is playing lights out and our offense struggles. What’s the deal with this? Why can’t we put a CONSISTENT team on the field? I think it has more to do with the attitude of the players than anything. Hopefully the new S&C approach will solve this somewhat. Also our O-Line way under-performed this year. What the hell is the point of a “play-action pro-style” offense if we can’t run the darn ball? Searels needs to shape up or ship out as far as I’m concerned. And can we please stop or at least contain the inside run for a game?!?!?! PLEASE?!?!? Hopefully a new beast of a NT will help in that matter. In my opnion (for what it’s worth) all of these issues need to be resolved if we’re going to make a run at the east this year and quite frankly I just don’t see it happening that quickly. Here’s hoping it does. GO DAWGS!

What excatly is the formula for a “consistent” team?

Mark Richt is a great coach and has done great things while at UGA, but I agree that if this coming year is sub-par (I’m not going to put a win total down because that doesn’t necessarily influence SECCG eligibility), then Richt should resign, which I think he would, or be forced out.

Three years of medicrity (’09, ‘10 and ‘11, hypothetically) would be too much to recover from in the current college football landscape. Ten years ago you could maybe get away with it, but not now, especially in the current SEC.

Who would I go after in said scenario?

First and foremost would be Chris Peterson of Boise State, and I think he would be willing to do it, too. Think about it, he gets to see first hand the support the fanbase shows when Boise comes to play us in Atlanta. He is also losing Kellen Moore and the rest of his playmakers (the ones that didn’t leave this year) and would be facing major rebuilding. And Boise STILL won’t be in an automatic bid conference (the MAC would’ve had a case for it if Utah had stayed, but they bolted for the soon-to-be PAC-12), which means if they lose a single game they’ll get locked out of the BCS. I think he gets tired of that scenario and would at least be open to UGA’s advances in such a scenario.

What if we couldn’t get him? I’m not sold on Kirby Smart. I think that’s still Saban’s defense in Tuscaloosa, and Smart is just getting tablescraps in terms of control.

I don’t want Dan Mullen. He’s a good coach, but I hate the spread offense, which is, unfortunately, becoming more and more than norm in college football.

Gary Patterson from TCU is an interesting choice, but I think he’s old enough that he won’t wanna change schools at this point.

What about Saban’s offensive coordinator? I dunno his name, but I like how he runs their offense.

Oops. Boise’s gonna be in the MWC.

But still, Peterson would be my number one choice, given his ability to coach up players (how many top recruiting classes has Boise had? Exactly), his choice of offensive schemes (a lotta shotgun and pro-style formations) and, obviously, his ability to win.

clem

seems to me that on just about every play called, someone screws up just a little bit. That is all it takes for the defense to blow up the play. These players have to commit themselves one hundred percent physically and mentally (every play). The game of football is then played on a 5 inch field (the 5 inches between the ears). I see no mental toughness on this team.

I would love for us to get to the point where the defense was good enough to allow us to run the ball a lot and pass less. We could quit worrying about having to outscore the opponents in the 30 point range and play ball control, good defense, good kicking game and win the 20-14 type games.

I think the main thing is CMR must instill hard nosed FIGHT into the team.

I’d make the players fight for everything.

First day of practice CMR should gather the team at the 50yd line with a depth chart in hand and over a trashcan set it on fire and let the team know that EVERY position is up for grabs and they are going to have to fight for it.

Also, I’d tell them that between now (first day of spring practice) and the G-day game each player will have to EARN the right to have a “G” on their helment. Those that do not EARN one will have to play in the g-day game with a plan red helment.

These kids today are very image conscious and ego driven. Use it to your advantage. No one will want to be one of the ones without a g.

Sounds childish? Well look at today’s athlete they are into self gloss and image so why not use it. It’s a new era and new players so old motivational tactics aren’t working so hit em where it hurts… their image!

Georgia has been more relevant under Richt than under Dooley or Butts. I can remember when GA went 20 years without SEC title. From 1987 to 2000, Bowden & FSU finished in the top 5 for 14 straight years. During that time, Ga has zero top 5 finishes. Richt has elevated the standards at GA.
Now, fans are running around like chicken little because of one losing season.

If you finish in the top ten in recruiting and don’t get any O or D linemen you haven’t done anything for the team. If you want to keep your job act like you want to be here. Make it fun ie. triple option set, jump passes, tunnel passes and just win your games. Murray and Charles could be all SEC next year. Move A. White to fullback. I’m sure Grantham’s personality will show on the field next year with all the talent there ie. Boykin, Hamilton, Jones, Samuels, A. Jones,Ogletreee and hopefully Houston. 1. We have been losing the line of scrimmage for the past 3 years!! Some of this is because our offensive line is out of shape, they are big but not strong
2. Bobo is terrified of an aggressive D, whenever we go up against a blitzing or 8 in the box defense Bobo doesn’t know what to do!!
3. Most importantly our players keep making the same mistakes over and over. Once you get beat on the wheel route once it shouldn’t happen again, but iinstead it happens ever damn game

I think it’s fairly simple to fix all that ails the UGA football program. I believe national media would be calling us contenders for the national championship after spring training if we we do one simple thing. Get rid of all the coaches presently on the staff and fill the vacancies with those who know so much and post here. Bill you could be the head coach and your brother the OC then that genius buddy of yours could run the defense. Fill in the other positions from the masses here that know so much. Just ad a couple jump passes and a spread option play or two like one guy suggested and all will be well in dawg world. I am still laughing about that one!!!!!!! Are all of you at a clown convention? See if they have a workshop on being able to tell a football from a flying saucer while you are there, k?

On a serious note one thing that would help the off the field problems is that someone should tar and feather any cop who arrests a person for not having a middle name. I think that would go a long way into evening things out among university fans. Or you could hire Derek Dooley away from Knoxville to be on staff as disciplinarian. He doesn’t care what his players do and doesn’t punish them at all. That way there isn’t a big to do over it.

Maybe the gloves were there to stop that coverage …………………I just don’t know.

Why Richt allowed that I will never know. Dumb the whole thing was.
10 wins and a SEC shot with the SEC West and Richt keeps his job. Anything short of that and he needs to resign or be fired. UGA grads expected years ago for him to take us to at least one NC.

Hell, we had Donnan and he did just about like Richt, less the 3 SEC East titles and 2 SEC titles. His persona and his inability to handle O’Leary and GT three years running got him deservedly fired.

A common theme here is the play of the offensive line. I agree. However, there is no “one year fix” to build your OL. Six months of old-school strength and conditioning is not going to do it. It takes several years to build an OL.

1. You sign the big boys out of high school.
2. You hang a red shirt on them.
3. You put them in the weight room and start shoveling mash potatoes and gravy down their throat.
4. By the time they are redshirt Juniors and Seniors, you have a bulked up line who has thousand of reps as a unit against your first team defenses.

That is your basis. Next is coaching. In the past, we have seen Searles do some amazing stuff – we know he knows how to coach. Remember 2007 (I think) when all the injuries hit? By the end of the season, the line play was as good as I have seen.

The very fact that Sturdivant started as a freshman says volumes about the quality of lineman we have. There is no way in hell a freshman should ever be able to start for a division 1 team. Period.

Obviously that’s why it isn’t demanded that Richt do this and that, that he will have no excuses for failure. This fifth choice D.C. Grantham has done not much with available players. Hard work and dedication to the task at hand is what makes one successful. Whether it’s a job, a profession or a game.
Now that’s not to say our coaches and players at UGA don’t work hard. They all put in countless hours i’m sure. It seems though that our SEC brethren have been working just a little bit harder.
For the past 3 or 4 seasons our team has been beaten in the trenches. On the line of scrimmage.

I hear people saying that “next year” the ship will be righted because the schedule will be ideal…

O.K. folks, WAKE UP AND THINK FOR A MOMENT!!!

Does an easy schedule make you a more physical football team?

Does an easy schedule make your offensive line improve?

Doeas an easy schedule result in more creative offensive play calling?

Get the point??

We need to improve on so many fronts, I don’t know where to start. The fact is, an easy schdule may improve things in the W-L column, but it will not translate into long-term success in the SEC or in the hunt for the NC. (see Hawaii)

Richt now has more time to “study the game of football”. So refresh my memory, what in the hell has he been doing for the last 10 years? A losing season was probably needed to light the fire under some collective butts. It’s also official – the coaches are “on notice”.

It all boils down to a couple things in my opinion. We need to back up the brinks truck to the top in state players. You can get away with it, and we are already paying players I know for a fact. We just got to tighten up our pay for play and not make the same mistakes Auburn made, no paper trails. We then need to recruit a top notch black qb. We need a spark to this offense. I want the best athletes, I dont care about sketch pasts or just plain old thuggery. If we win 11 games next season is anyone really gonna care if we have 30 arrests? He needs to call the game more aggressively. Go after the punt, try the surprise onside, and try to score before the half instead of letting the clock run out. Richt needs to make decisions that motivate his players and inspires them to play harder. They need to have more fun out on the field. It seems like they’re trying to be perfectionists instead of just playing ball. Stop running a draw or screen on every 2nd or 3rd and long. Make Bobo call an aggressive play and just go for it. They almost had it together in the UF game– going for the TD to Durham in OT was the right idea. That is the kind of thing UGA needs to do– go after the opponents! Stop being so conservative with a 10-point lead– keep after em! Keep throwing the ball, MOVING THE POCKET– and let Aaron Murray run if he feels like it! Stop worrying about what might go wrong. Call the game and play it aggressively. It isn’t the NFL! This is college football! I rea’d love to see UGA open next season with a surprise onside. Who cares if they don’t recover it!? That will send the message that things have changed for the better. Our defense would go out there still fired up because their coach gave em a chance. This is GEORGIA. WE AIN’T SCARED! I’m a firm believer if you take some of these 2 and 3 star recruits and get them in top shape through conditioning and weight training, especially lineman you can compete with anybody. Look at the great lines Iowa and Nebraska put out yearly. You have to keep them in the weight room for size and strength. The sucess of any offense is the front line. And the most important thing is the character of the young men they sign These 4 and 5 star recruits are way overblown. A lot of them come in with this thug mentaility and hurt the intire program.

To all you people that keep saying,”fire Bobo”. Don’t you understand that he is CMR’s appointed man, just like Coach Willie Martinez was. CMR Defended Willie until it was either Willie or Richt. Bobo is not the problem, it start’s with the head. CMR will not change, he will be satisfied with this being his last year, keeping his commitments and friendships in tact and retiring in Athens, never to coach again. He is a man of principle for better or worse. He’s a very good man just not a great coach.

The following was taken from an ESPN.com article (Best and Worst of the SEC Bowl Season, by Chris Low):

“Worst decision: Georgia coach Mark Richt opting to kick a field goal down near the goal line on the Bulldogs’ first possession told you all you needed to know about the Bulldogs’ state of mind for that game.”

“Best no-show: Georgia was there in body alone, as the Bulldogs went through the motions and dropped an embarrassing 10-6 decision to UCF in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.”

What a joke this program has become under CMR’s “leadership”! Our assistant coaches couldn’t get jobs at 1-AA schools. And to think that we have another mediocre season to look forward to under CMR!

Isaiah Crowell visits Alabama this weekend. Why would he come to UGA with Bobo’s bad use of backs when he can be part of Alabamas Backfield. Look at how each school uses their back and there is no choice. The only way he comes to UGA is he just always wanted too. If it is about Football he is not going to Athens. The fact that he did not come forth and tell Richt about the incident would do it for me. Also, I agree with mdawg, fans should not critize Richt for letting Mett.. go if he starts for LSU. We may have issues at GA, but at least Richt wastes no time handing out discipline, I don’t see that any where else in the SEC, except SC. Get the defense off the field on third down?????????? What about keeping the offense on the field after third down?????? Both make no sense.

Basically defense stops people on third down and offense makes first downs before fourth down. You did not mean that but we understand. Better defense and better offense. I have always said the best way to have a fresh defense is having a ball controlling offense. Our quick score offense seems o put more time on the defense than needed for successfully stopping the other team. The Auburn game is a prime example.

Stacy Searels is garbage. Richt will live or die next year based on his decision to keep him around. Also, the “new” regime in S&C is a little disheartening. This is Richt’s last chance and he stuck with the people in the two worst aspects of the coaching staff. I hope it works.

Depth at wide receiver is pretty important too. The lack of any kind of threat without AJ Green just showed that we have no other receivers that can add pressure to a defense. Durham was a good servicable receiver, but there was a major drop off after that. Would have thought T. King would have been further along and Wooten has had time in the system to be stronger. Understandibly, we lacked a running game to take pressure off Murray but we used the tight ends less than we should have to open up the outsides. Some of this does amount to play calling which I thought was predictable too many times. Murray also needs work on his play action fakes…he never gets close to the running back which doesn’t sell the fake at all.

Ditto the need for better conditioning: the picture of Searels and the two lineman shown are Exhibit A.

Cuz mentioned calling the plays (assume he means Richt). I thought Richt calling the plays in addition to all of his head coaching duties was the reason cited for Georgia’s offensive production problems in ‘06 and the resulting switch to Bobo. Even during the glory days of Richt’s first 4 years I don’t recall Georgia lighting up too many scoreboards. Those were teams dominated by great defense. But Richt needs to shake things up and maybe that switch is as good as any.

My gut feeling is that Richt is toast because he mailed it in several years ago. He’s just not the same guy he was from ‘01-’05. My dad’s theory is that Richt (like all high profile coaches these days) is so incredibly wealthy that he’s lost his hunger for the rigors of being a big program head coach. I think the old man might be on to something.

One thing they have to do is score over 30 points on 8 opponents just like the class of…..oh that’s right we never did that before..you guys are right the offensive coordinator has to go…scoring over 30points 8 times in the SEC is frigging EASY…with a bad O line and a first year starter at QB…EASY!!!

I’ve never been a fan of RB by committee, because it doesn’t allow a back to establish a feel for the game or the defense. This is the fault of Richt… he was a huge proponent of RB by committee when he was running the offense. It wasn’t until we had Knowshon that they essentially went to a one back offense. If Crowell is all that and a bag of chips, he’ll have as many carries as he can handle.

The other area that needs improvement is the Secondary. They’re slow to react, can’t tackle and loaf. This has been a consistent weak spot for the last 4 years and must be fixed. Lakatos is running out of credits after only one year.

LOST 4 games by 7 points ? Where we you this season ? We LOST SEVEN (7) GAMES, the MOST LOSSES by UGA ever in ANY season in the 118-year history of UGA football, achieved only twice prior EVER – the last time 1957. That’s 53 years ago.

9-4 minimum ? Mark Richt LOSES 4 games 2011, and he is FIRED.

Here is what 9-4 looks like Gerald :

If you think Mark Richt is going to keep his job being 9-4, you should look up what 9-4 record like this you predict for 2011 would have meant in 2009 and 2010. 2009 a 9-4 makes you # 32 in the nation in won / lost. Same for 2010 that 9-4 would have made Mark Richt # 32 in the nation won / lost record at 9-4. We’re # 3 all-time in SEC Football Championships Won and we’re # 11 all-time in 1-A Wins. We’re in state that finds only 3 other states with more High School Recruits who go on to the NFL. Over 6 million in this 1 city alone. # 32 won / lost 2011 is 9-4. Maybe your goal is to be # 32. Mine is not. You, sir, are NO DAWG FAN – you are a Mark Richt APOLOGIST only. When Mark Richt loses his job going 9-4 this season after 8-5 and 6-7, which will put him OUTSIDE the Top 50 over his last 3 years then at the end of 2011 at 9-4, will you be a University of Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Fan THEN ? “Richt had finished in the top 10 20 out of his 25 seasons as a coach.”

Mark Richt finished in the Top 10 AP Poll 5 of his 10 years as coach.

2001 – NO
2002 – 3
2003 – 7
2004 – 7
2005 – 10
2006 – NO
2007 – 2
2008 – NO
2009 – NO
2010 – NO

Very INCONSISTENT on Top 10 and he has been the coach only these last 10 years. Bobby Bowden was the coach at Flawed State, Free Shoes University,

In October 1999, Florida State all-American wide receiver Peter Warrick and Laveranues Coles were arrested and pleaded guilty to petty theft of clothes and shoes at Dillard’s department store. It was not the first time “Florida State” and “free shoes” had been used in the same punch line. In FSU’s (a.k.a. Free Shoes University) run to the national championship in 1993, nine Florida State players violated NCAA rules by allowing agents to bankroll a shopping spree at a Foot Locker store.

Bobby Bowden’s career is marred by his constant never-ending arrests / suspension scandals daily until he was finally KICKED-OUT at Flawed State University for all these scandals. Their recruits STAYED IN TROUBLE.

This is the biggest knock on Mark Richt that in the era of the FULMER CUP now, Mark Richt is # 2 All-Time in Fulmer Cup Standings for MOST ARRESTED / SUSPENDED FOOTBALL TEAM. This covers the period after DJ Shockley through today. 6 years and Mark Richt is # 2 worst in the NATION in Most Arrests / Suspensions. These are ALL Mark Richt recruits.

If there is ANYTHING CONISISTENT about Mark Richt it is (1) That HIS RECRUITS he brought here are ARRESTED / SUSPENDED and that (2) 4 of the last 5 years, he has NOT been ranked in the Top 10 of the Final AP Poll, as you point out you want to discuss. Consider this discussed then

# 12 at 10-3 for 2005
# 11 at 10-2 for 2004
# 12 at 11-3 for 2003
# 02 at 13-1 for 2002
# 34 at 08-4 for 2001

Mark Richt is quite INCONSISTENT at Winning Percentage in his 10 years as our Coach.

Mark Richt Averages finishing # 24 in Winning Percentage

Mark Richt is 96-34.

The Five (5) Years (half of the Mark Richt Era) Mark Richt has NOT finished in the Top 10 in the AP Poll, he has those Five (5) Years Averaged Finishing # 38 in Winning Percentage.

# 38 Average Winning Percentage half of the Mark Richt era 5 years

The Five (5) Years (half of the Mark Richt Era) Mark Richt has finished in the Top 10 in the AP Poll, he has those Five (5) Years Averaged Finishing # 9.

There are 20 places worse these last Five (5) Years in Average Winning Percentage Rank per Season than there were with the Jim Donnan recruits.

Now, why is that you want to talk about who is doing well in the NFL who Mark Richt RECRUITED here compared to those RECRUITED here by Jim Donnan ?

Jim Donnan Won a HIGHER WINNING PERCENTAGE of his games OVERALL and a HIGHER WINNING PERCENTAGE OF his SEC games than Mark Richt, comparing Mark Richt’s Last Five (5) Years to the Five (5) Years of Jim Donnan.

40-19 Jim Donnan his Five (5) Years .678 Winning Percentage
44-21 Mark Richt last Five (5) Years .677 Winning Percentage
