What are key fixes Dogs must make for Richt to keep his job?

Stacy Searels' underperforming offensive lines have been a big problem for the Dogs. (Georgiadogs.com)

The list of things Mark Richt and his staff have to fix for the coming season in order to keep their jobs at UGA is pretty long. Chances are they won’t be able to get it all done, even under the best of circumstances.

But while the Dogs might not be quite as “close” as Richt touts them to be, they do have Aaron Murray and some other talented players, and if a few things break Georgia’s way a turnaround to challenge for the SEC East is certainly within Richt’s reach.

But in order for that to have a chance of happening the head coach and his staff absolutely have to get a few key things done. And those keys are:

Line play has to improve on both sides of the ball. On defense, if Georgia can land JUCO beast John Jenkins, who recently pulled out of his commitment to Okie State, it will be a big step toward fixing one of the major weaknesses of Todd Grantham’s defense: the lack of an effective nose guard. On offense, Stacy Searels has seen his troops badly underperform for most of the past two seasons. It’s time for him to prove he’s the coach UGA thought it was getting when he was hired away from LSU.

The Dogs have to develop an effective running game. The offensive line play has been a big negative factor here, but Georgia’s backs also just haven’t gotten it done. Caleb King can’t seem to stay in the lineup and Washaun Ealey seems more concerned with running his mouth than developing consistency running the ball. (It doesn’t help that Mike Bobo favors that running-back-by-committee thing and tends to insert little Carlton Thomas at the worst times.) Signing Isaiah Crowell definitely would be a game-changer for the Dogs.

Get the defense off the field on third down. Georgia ranked dead last in the SEC this past season in third-down defense efficiency. Plugging the middle with a big man like Jenkins no doubt will help in that regard, but the Dogs need more pressure from the linebackers and smarter play in the secondary. Time for Grantham to earn that big salary.

Georgia has to be stronger and better conditioned. Getting pushed around on the line and fading in the fourth quarter will pretty much guarantee you don’t win the close games. Richt is betting that “old school” Joe Tereshinski can whip the Dogs into shape by putting the focus more on hard work than mentoring. It’s a good sign that Christian Robinson was tweeting yesterday about having just been through the “hardest workout ever at Georgia!” Let’s hope there’s more than just talk there.

Any other “must” fixes you see in order for Richt and company to still be around in Athens in 2012?

Here are a few things I think will help:
Bobo needs to be in the box and off the sidelines
Branden Smith should be playing slot reciever to use his talent.
Give Ealey 25 touches a game and he will get his 100 yards.
Secondary should be Boykin, Commings, Ogletree, and S.Williams
Let Murray use his duel threat more and run two backs in the shotgun some…and oh yeah, get rid of R. Garner

If Garner is such a bad coach and recruiter, How does Georgia produce so many NFL D-linemen? I believe they had three defensive tackles taken in the draft last year.

Every point above goes back to the first one… Improved line play on both sides of the ball. If we can strengthen the guys in the trenches, things will turn around real quick. We have plenty of skilled position players. It’s time to man up in the weight room for the OL and DL.

Fran T said everything that needed to be said. UGA players are weak and out of shape for the most part and CMR knew it. He just wouldn’t do the the right thing in letting Coach Van go 3 or 4 years ago. I’m glad to hear T Brown and V Haynes are back with the program. CMR really embarrassed himself with that presser last week.

Ealey is a very good rb. His numbers are pretty good. Over 800 yds rushing and over 5.0 yards per carry . He just needs better blocking.

Crowell had a terrible under armour game and got knocked out of the game. Plus I think he is injury prone. Richt did not start Ealey until the fifth game of his freshman year and he did not play in four games this year (really 6 if you count the Colorado game where he got 1 carry and another game where he got around five carries). So he has not even played a complete year due to our coaching staff and its great game planning skills. Give Ealey the ball more and we will win more!!!

Let’s put da Preacha Man and his arseistants on the Pay for Play scheme. We could save millions each year!

Oh yeah, btw, Crowell is going to be another 200 pound flash in the pan like King and Ealey… We need a big brute who can make the tackler pay and runs with authority north and south. Crowell ain’t that guy…

To all the folks screaming to get rid of Garner, do you realize that he’s the best recruiter on the staff? He’s also a fine position coach! Don’t understand that demand at all. Our problems stem from the offensive play calling and the S&C aspects.

The most key fix would be for our Athletic Dept to return to reality and hire a head coach (like CMF) that still has the passion for the game. This would translate into better players, position coaches, attitude, hustle, playmaking, and excitement for the loyal fans.

I’m thinking that Malcome becomes the #1 back next year. Word is he has gained 15 pounds of muscle. He was having trouble picking up blitzes in practice or he would have played this past year.

I would love for us to get to the point where the defense was good enough to allow us to run the ball a lot and pass less. We could quit worrying about having to outscore the opponents in the 30 point range and play ball control, good defense, good kicking game and win the 20-14 type games.

Remains to be seen. If you go back and look, our defense won us a lot of games from 2001-2005.

I believe that UGA has set it’s goals too high. With the talent in the SEC East… UF, USC and upcoming TN, it is unrealistic for UGA to think that they can win their division with Richt, much less the SEC Championship.

I think the main thing is CMR must instill hard nosed FIGHT into the team.

I’d make the players fight for everything.

First day of practice CMR should gather the team at the 50yd line with a depth chart in hand and over a trashcan set it on fire and let the team know that EVERY position is up for grabs and they are going to have to fight for it.

Also, I’d tell them that between now (first day of spring practice) and the G-day game each player will have to EARN the right to have a “G” on their helment. Those that do not EARN one will have to play in the g-day game with a plan red helment.

These kids today are very image conscious and ego driven. Use it to your advantage. No one will want to be one of the ones without a g.

Sounds childish? Well look at today’s athlete they are into self gloss and image so why not use it. It’s a new era and new players so old motivational tactics aren’t working so hit em where it hurts… their image!

DawginLex…I always enjoy and respect your posts, but tell me why our RBs have trouble picking up blocking assignments. Is our Bobo offensive scheme so complicated (and if so why doesn’t it work except on teams with losing records)? Or, are our recruits just plain stupid? I’m thinking it’s our coaching.

I’m pretty sure if you three; King, Schultz and Bradley put your heads together you can ensure that there is at least one story every day about the Dawgs football program between now and next September. I just know that you can do it. I really admire your tenacity and just know in my heart that all three of you have nothing but good wishes for the success of the Bulldog Football Program. I do hope that you will occasionally cover some other Dawg sports however, or even The NBA, NHL, and the NFL playoffs when t comes to Schultz and Bradley. It is very comforting I am sure to the Dawg faithful that you three amigos have such a heartfelt interest in Coach Richt and the football fortunes of those fine young players.

You can have all the one-handed acrobatic catches you want, but I want some guys who are not flashy but catch the ball with both hands and score. Super Stars are generally over-rated. What we need is more TEAM, TOUGHNESS, AND TENACITY. And if Caleb even sneezes wrong, kick him off the team.

Also, make adjustments in the first quarter not at half when it is too late.

1:Wide receivers are the most over rated players on a football team. AJ, hit the road.
2:If Grantham can’t sign an adequate nose guard, hit the road.
3:If Bobo can’t get Murray in the shotgun and forget play action on obvious passing downs, hit the road.
4:If Bobo insists on throwing 40 yard passes on 3rd and 5, hit the road.

Georgia has been more relevant under Richt than under Dooley or Butts. I can remember when GA went 20 years without SEC title. From 1987 to 2000, Bowden & FSU finished in the top 5 for 14 straight years. During that time, Ga has zero top 5 finishes. Richt has elevated the standards at GA.
Now, fans are running around like chicken little because of one losing season.

Someone help me out. Is recruiting judged by number of players with stars or by getting the players you need? If you finish in the top ten in recruiting and don’t get any O or D linemen you haven’t done anything for the team. NC is not handed to the team that wins the recruiting war tou have to win the game.
