What are key fixes Dogs must make for Richt to keep his job?

Stacy Searels' underperforming offensive lines have been a big problem for the Dogs. (Georgiadogs.com)

The list of things Mark Richt and his staff have to fix for the coming season in order to keep their jobs at UGA is pretty long. Chances are they won’t be able to get it all done, even under the best of circumstances.

But while the Dogs might not be quite as “close” as Richt touts them to be, they do have Aaron Murray and some other talented players, and if a few things break Georgia’s way a turnaround to challenge for the SEC East is certainly within Richt’s reach.

But in order for that to have a chance of happening the head coach and his staff absolutely have to get a few key things done. And those keys are:

Line play has to improve on both sides of the ball. On defense, if Georgia can land JUCO beast John Jenkins, who recently pulled out of his commitment to Okie State, it will be a big step toward fixing one of the major weaknesses of Todd Grantham’s defense: the lack of an effective nose guard. On offense, Stacy Searels has seen his troops badly underperform for most of the past two seasons. It’s time for him to prove he’s the coach UGA thought it was getting when he was hired away from LSU.

The Dogs have to develop an effective running game. The offensive line play has been a big negative factor here, but Georgia’s backs also just haven’t gotten it done. Caleb King can’t seem to stay in the lineup and Washaun Ealey seems more concerned with running his mouth than developing consistency running the ball. (It doesn’t help that Mike Bobo favors that running-back-by-committee thing and tends to insert little Carlton Thomas at the worst times.) Signing Isaiah Crowell definitely would be a game-changer for the Dogs.

Get the defense off the field on third down. Georgia ranked dead last in the SEC this past season in third-down defense efficiency. Plugging the middle with a big man like Jenkins no doubt will help in that regard, but the Dogs need more pressure from the linebackers and smarter play in the secondary. Time for Grantham to earn that big salary.

Georgia has to be stronger and better conditioned. Getting pushed around on the line and fading in the fourth quarter will pretty much guarantee you don’t win the close games. Richt is betting that “old school” Joe Tereshinski can whip the Dogs into shape by putting the focus more on hard work than mentoring. It’s a good sign that Christian Robinson was tweeting yesterday about having just been through the “hardest workout ever at Georgia!” Let’s hope there’s more than just talk there.

Any other “must” fixes you see in order for Richt and company to still be around in Athens in 2012?

. Why does everyone pin the hopes of this football program on Crowell? I agree that he is a good back, but it wasn’t that long ago that the UGA faithful had another “2nd coming of the running back Jesus” and that was in ‘96 when we signed Jasper Sanks. Yeah, boy he turned out to be a real world beater. What high school did he go to again? Oh yeah! That’s right, THE SAME ONE. Crowell may come to UGA, he may not. He may go on to be an amazingly unstoppable force at another school, or he may not. Personally I would rather have Tauren Poole who plays for TN, that went to Stephens County and received 0 offers from UGA than either of the pathetic, “please i just ran the ball 2 times in a row i need to go dance on the sideline and get coddled by the trainers” backs that we have now. Crowell or No Crowell, we need to commit to the run and fine someone to carry the load. There are other good backs out there. Please stop putting him on a pedestal because you read some scouting report or watched a YouTube video.

Whoa! “Flashes of greatness” by Ealey? He’s way slow, pitifully slow, and not very big. King’s too slow, too. And Thomas is too little.

Then again, this is the coaching staff that was recruiting Cam Newton as a defensive end….

Get a head coach who has the ability, the desire, and the determination to win. Richt lacks all three of these necessary qualities. The success of his first 5 years was due to luck more then anything else. A foundation built upon Donnan’s players and weak head coaching at SEC schools during that time.

Hard to disagree with any of this. We have become a second rate team that can’t finish that has consistently recruited thugs with no character to come play and then fall our or commit another crime. And then they go sign with the LSU’s of the world. First, I would fire Bobo for his lousy play calling. Has anyone else seen what progressive offensive’s other teams are putting on the field. Second, I would then upgrade our line play and running backs and linebackers and saftey’s and cornerbacks and……..so you see a pattern here. It all comes down to Richt and his ability to coach these kids and recruit better. Give him one more year.

Crowell sure didn’t impress in the all star game that was on espn the other night. He isn’t the answer. Anyway, you could put Captain Caveman back there with the ball, but if Coach T doesn’t get those lard butt offensive lineman in shape, it isn’t going to matter any.
Seriously, the S&C program has been a problem since the beginning. Richt’s early teams were always the walking wounded by the end of camp. I used to believe they must have been working them too hard in practice. That wasn’t the case. Instead, they were not in good shape. So what does Richt do? He eased up on the full contact and amount of practice time to compensate. Brilliant!!

Bill you are dead on with what’s need to take place this year and the future. Ga need to get a OC and let Coach Bobo coach the qb’s. I would like to see a OC who can coach a variety type of formations, Spread, I-Formation, Wishbone, someone who can identify the def scheme and call something totally different. We are getting Mithcell, Rome, Crowell and Drew. Oh yeah and Jenkins, need to recruit a one or two star OL and make him a DT out of the blue the kid will be thrilled to join the team and contribute. Last 10 SEC champions- Auburn 2, Florida 2, DAWGS 2, LSU 2, Alabama 1. Very cyclical. Why all the pessimism. With the returning players and incoming recruits plus Jarvis Jones and Richard Samuuel, Georgia will have more depth across the board than in recent history. As the great Larry Munson said “DAWGS ON TOP, I GAVE UP, YOU DID TOO!”

How about consistency? It seems like one day our offense is lighting it up but our defense can’t stop anyone. The next outing our defense is playing lights out and our offense struggles. What’s the deal with this? Why can’t we put a CONSISTENT team on the field? I think it has more to do with the attitude of the players than anything. Hopefully the new S&C approach will solve this somewhat. Also our O-Line way under-performed this year. What the hell is the point of a “play-action pro-style” offense if we can’t run the darn ball? Searels needs to shape up or ship out as far as I’m concerned. And can we please stop or at least contain the inside run for a game?!?!?! PLEASE?!?!? Hopefully a new beast of a NT will help in that matter. In my opnion (for what it’s worth) all of these issues need to be resolved if we’re going to make a run at the east this year and quite frankly I just don’t see it happening that quickly. Here’s hoping it does. GO DAWGS!

What excatly is the formula for a “consistent” team?

Mark Richt is a great coach and has done great things while at UGA, but I agree that if this coming year is sub-par (I’m not going to put a win total down because that doesn’t necessarily influence SECCG eligibility), then Richt should resign, which I think he would, or be forced out.

Three years of medicrity (’09, ‘10 and ‘11, hypothetically) would be too much to recover from in the current college football landscape. Ten years ago you could maybe get away with it, but not now, especially in the current SEC.

Who would I go after in said scenario?

First and foremost would be Chris Peterson of Boise State, and I think he would be willing to do it, too. Think about it, he gets to see first hand the support the fanbase shows when Boise comes to play us in Atlanta. He is also losing Kellen Moore and the rest of his playmakers (the ones that didn’t leave this year) and would be facing major rebuilding. And Boise STILL won’t be in an automatic bid conference (the MAC would’ve had a case for it if Utah had stayed, but they bolted for the soon-to-be PAC-12), which means if they lose a single game they’ll get locked out of the BCS. I think he gets tired of that scenario and would at least be open to UGA’s advances in such a scenario.

What if we couldn’t get him? I’m not sold on Kirby Smart. I think that’s still Saban’s defense in Tuscaloosa, and Smart is just getting tablescraps in terms of control.

I don’t want Dan Mullen. He’s a good coach, but I hate the spread offense, which is, unfortunately, becoming more and more than norm in college football.

Gary Patterson from TCU is an interesting choice, but I think he’s old enough that he won’t wanna change schools at this point.

What about Saban’s offensive coordinator? I dunno his name, but I like how he runs their offense.

Who sets the tone for the team, who gives it a heartbeat, an identity, life, a purpose? Who instills work ethic, who’s responsible for cultivating an environment in which I can be successful? Who plans for the long term when an employee opts out for a better job. Who develops the employee that someone else covets? Who doles out the discipline when it has to be done. Who fires someone when it’s obvious they aren’t producing work that meets the standard? Answer those questions friends and you will have your answer as to what will fix the Dawgs.

Oops. Boise’s gonna be in the MWC.

But still, Peterson would be my number one choice, given his ability to coach up players (how many top recruiting classes has Boise had? Exactly), his choice of offensive schemes (a lotta shotgun and pro-style formations) and, obviously, his ability to win.

seems to me that on just about every play called, someone screws up just a little bit. That is all it takes for the defense to blow up the play. These players have to commit themselves one hundred percent physically and mentally (every play). The game of football is then played on a 5 inch field (the 5 inches between the ears). I see no mental toughness on this team.
