What are key fixes Dogs must make for Richt to keep his job?

Stacy Searels' underperforming offensive lines have been a big problem for the Dogs. (Georgiadogs.com)

The list of things Mark Richt and his staff have to fix for the coming season in order to keep their jobs at UGA is pretty long. Chances are they won’t be able to get it all done, even under the best of circumstances.

But while the Dogs might not be quite as “close” as Richt touts them to be, they do have Aaron Murray and some other talented players, and if a few things break Georgia’s way a turnaround to challenge for the SEC East is certainly within Richt’s reach.

But in order for that to have a chance of happening the head coach and his staff absolutely have to get a few key things done. And those keys are:

Line play has to improve on both sides of the ball. On defense, if Georgia can land JUCO beast John Jenkins, who recently pulled out of his commitment to Okie State, it will be a big step toward fixing one of the major weaknesses of Todd Grantham’s defense: the lack of an effective nose guard. On offense, Stacy Searels has seen his troops badly underperform for most of the past two seasons. It’s time for him to prove he’s the coach UGA thought it was getting when he was hired away from LSU.

The Dogs have to develop an effective running game. The offensive line play has been a big negative factor here, but Georgia’s backs also just haven’t gotten it done. Caleb King can’t seem to stay in the lineup and Washaun Ealey seems more concerned with running his mouth than developing consistency running the ball. (It doesn’t help that Mike Bobo favors that running-back-by-committee thing and tends to insert little Carlton Thomas at the worst times.) Signing Isaiah Crowell definitely would be a game-changer for the Dogs.

Get the defense off the field on third down. Georgia ranked dead last in the SEC this past season in third-down defense efficiency. Plugging the middle with a big man like Jenkins no doubt will help in that regard, but the Dogs need more pressure from the linebackers and smarter play in the secondary. Time for Grantham to earn that big salary.

Georgia has to be stronger and better conditioned. Getting pushed around on the line and fading in the fourth quarter will pretty much guarantee you don’t win the close games. Richt is betting that “old school” Joe Tereshinski can whip the Dogs into shape by putting the focus more on hard work than mentoring. It’s a good sign that Christian Robinson was tweeting yesterday about having just been through the “hardest workout ever at Georgia!” Let’s hope there’s more than just talk there.

Any other “must” fixes you see in order for Richt and company to still be around in Athens in 2012?

One thing i do not like about these blogs is it’s like letting you neighbors hear you and your wife fight all the time. We expose our disappointments and opinions on here publicly and they get to laugh and view it. Trust me, I went to the UF blogs after Muschamp and the Weis hires, and it was not pretty. Most thought they could hire anyone they wanted….and WHO?

Buck Strickland: Part of what you wrote is kinda sorry. Needing “help” to win a national title. What Florida and LSU did on the field for themselves proved worthy enough for them to play in the title game. And even without those particular titles, both those schools have stamped championship seaons for themselves in the recent past.

Strickland, your UGA team was freaking No. 1 in the land to start 2008 (or whatever year that was), yet your coaching staff was too dayum busy jumping in pools being one of the “guys” when he should have been developing a SOUND defensive scheme.

All the talent in this state. No talent in coaching!

Get familiar with the SEC cellar. It’s where you’ll be for a while!

There is no bigger UGA fan than the Snoop Dawg, bar none.

This dawg is getting tired of all the trash talk about Auburn. This is nothing but jealousy. The fact is that Auburn put a major whooping on the worst UGA football team in the past 50 years. End of story. The Dawgs were soft and got smacked down. Everyone would love Newton and that big defensive dude if they had worn the Red and Black. They probably would have loved to have been Dawgs, but Mssrs Richt and Garner did not try very hard to recruit them because they didn’t fit into Richt’s feeble and stupid “system.” So shut up about Auburn. We need a new competent coaching staff at UGA who can recruit, coach, and field a team that is “man enough” to whip the Alabama boys home and away. Until that day comes, we are not worthy.

Win With Richt

Richt is best coach in school history. Georgia more relevant under Richt than under Dooley. From 1971 thru 2000, the 30 years prior to Richt. Georgia won 1 nc, 4 SEC titles, and 4 top 5 rankings. In the 3 Herschel Walker years, they won 1 NC, 3 SEC titles, and 3 top 5 rankings. In the other 27 years they won 0 NC, 1 SEC, and ! top 5 ranking.

So, after deducting the 3 Walker years (1980,1981,1982), the Bulldogs won only 1 SEC title and 1 top five ranking in the 70’s 80’s & 90’s! Georgia is a lot more relevant under RICHT!

One more thing: We really need to step-up and commit ourselves to paying for some of the top talent to come to Athens, no matter what the cost. Pay-For-Play wins, and when people get caught they don’t even get punished, so let’s do it. Plus, then our players don’t have to resort to such hideous activities as selling THEIR OWN property for some Spring Break money, consequently getting 4 game suspensions.
BTW, anyone touting the clown/”win at all cost” “war eagle” coach is truly a moron, as that house is about to come crashing down, and anyone with half a brain knows it.

As fans, we should give Grantham another year, as I think that is the only reasonable thing to do. However, this year’s defensive performance was quite disappointing, so I sincerely hope another year to implement, and recruit for, his system makes a HUGE difference. I am starting to feel much better about recruiting, so let’s hope it continues to get better and better.

Nice things about Richt staying on (which means the slide continues):

1. UGA apparel is real cheap
2. Makes it easier to chase skirt during the game
3. No problem getting tickets
4. Great year to get to know the Cross-Country team
5. Summer pool parties instead of practice
6. It doesn’t matter that the big recruits are choosing to go elsewhere
7. The whole starting 22 could getting arrested and it wouldn’t change the outcome of a game
8. Goff and Donnan keep getting better
9. Great time for frat-boys to walk-on
10. GT is gonna suck too :)

#1 offense against #2 defense
#2 offense running next week’s opponents offense

One more thing, we need to recruit an elite black boy for qb. Aaron Murray is not getting it done, and will be a failure at the helm next season. We need a team of exclusively blacks, no more soft white boys that are slow.
