Are latest departures from UGA a good thing?

Marcus Dowtin was known for not being a happy camper in Athens. (AJC file)

A housecleaning of sorts appears to be under way in Athens.

A week after we learned that new athletic director Greg McGarity was taking some of the head coach’s administrative duties off Mark Richt’s plate so he can concentrate fully on football, another couple of departures have been announced.

First, inside linebacker Marcus Dowtin was granted an unconditional release from his scholarship to transfer elsewhere. And now associate athletic director Arthur Johnson is leaving UGA to return to the University of Texas.

Dowtin’s departure will hurt the already depleted linebacking corps, but it’s not really a surprise. He had the reputation of having an attitude problem, which apparently resulted in a clash with a coach that led to him not playing in the Liberty Bowl despite making the trip to Memphis. And then there was the second-degree assault charge back home in Maryland last May that he managed to get resolved but didn’t bother to tell Richt about, with the head coach only getting clued in last week.

There’s been no word on whether Dowtin decided to leave on his own, it was a mutual decision or he was shoved out the door. But you get the feeling nobody was begging him to stay. If this is a sign of a new zero-tolerance policy for players who aren’t fully committed to what’s best for the program, then it should be viewed as a good thing.

Arthur Johnson is going back to his old job in Texas. (Georgiadogs.com)

Arthur Johnson is going back to his old job in Texas. (Georgiadogs.com)

As for Johnson, who was responsible for scheduling and oversight of facilities and event management among other things, what’s most notable about him leaving is that he’s returning to the exact same job he had at UT before joing UGA in 2005. So it’s not a move for career advancement.

While everyone is making nice and portraying his departure as amicable, the fact that he was former AD Damon Evans’ roommate at UGA and closely identified with the Evans regime and its now-abandoned let’s-go-way-out-west scheduling philosophy naturally raises suspicions that McGarity is beginning to move to assemble his own team at Butts-Mehre.

So what do you think of these departures? The Dogs were already thin at linebacker, so the loss of Dowtin won’t make things any easier for Todd Grantham, though they might help off the field. And you’ll recall that when Evans took over as AD at UGA, he cleaned house in a much more drastic fashion than McGarity has done so far.

Is all of this a sign of things getting back on course in Athens or just folks bailing out of a declining program?

If troublemaker Dowtin didn’t want to be here, then good riddance.

Don’t know the facts on Johnson… McGarity should be able to assemble his own team…and I imagine we’ll see some additional changes. Maybe he wanted to assess Johnson and it ended up not working out…

I’m still not seeing anything significant in the way of changes in Athens. This is all small pototoes stuff. Bottomline is that if nothing changes, then nothing changes. And with a 6-7 record and a deeply flawed bowl performance, there are some things that NEED to change.

I think it’s a good thing that dowtin is leaving! we dont want anybody at UGA that dosent want to be there, yes we are thin at inside LB but we have recruted well enough to let some of these young guys get in here and get some quality PT so i’m not worried about it!

Well, I have read on these blogs nothing but criticism of UGA in regards to player behavior, and how they should do something about it. But, now the criticism will be that UGA is getting rid of players that they need, and that will end up at schools like Auburn or LSU.

McGarity has a right to build his own athletic staff, what it’ll look like and what it’s results will be is to be determined but I think he probably needs too. I listened to the Tarkenton clip and he sound a bit angry. He did have some valid points but sounded angry. I don’t think we are a program in decline yet. One more year and maybe my opinion will change.

If Dowtin was the trouble maker as it seems to be reported, it’ll be a good thing in the long run. We have another scholarship available for a linebacker so we can have another body at least, experience wise it’ll hurt until late in the season when it shouldn’t if proper coaching is being applied.

Nick Saban at Alabama = 1 SEC Championship and 1 BCS National title.

Gene Chizik at Auburn = 1 SEC Championship and 1 BCS National title.

Les Miles at LSU = 1 SEC Championship and 1 BCS National title.

Mark Richt at UGA = 2 SEC Championship and 0 BCS National titles.

The SEC has three coaches with national titles under their belts in a 6 year strand. I would include Urban but he quit and is no longer relevant in the SEC.

Mark Richt has been at UGA since 2000, right? Saban, Miles and Chizik have been at their schools in less time and all three have accomplished more. No one gave Chizik a chance and yet he is 8-0 all-time in bowl games as head coach or assistant head coach.

My bet is that McGarity’s cleansing is healthy for the program and that Dowtin’s deal is more of a dismissal. Even though the fans are bashing Richt and company, I believe we’ll all be proud of the program again sooner rather than later…. with Richt still in place. The past three years seem like a “downward spiral” but this group will turn it around and you’ll see an upward spiral over the next three what with some minor personnel changes, a nice recruiting class, and hopefully a better attitude by the fanbase (winning will help). The fans could sure help the program by not being so negative all the time. The sky falling! the sky is falling! No it’s not. UGA will be back on top soon enough.

These are adjustments that will only help UGA regain its elite status on and off the field. Dowtin’s departure may prove productive for our recruiting efforts. no idea about johnson. i hate to lose dowtin’s production–he was definitely our second best ILB last year, and has always played physically and tackled well in space–but i know he constantly butted heads with coaches (jancek first and then grantham and belin). if he was as disruptive as it seems, then it’s best for everyone that he find a new school. we can recruit more good linebackers. i wish him the best, but i’m excited about jarvis jones and richard samuel moving into our ILB rotation. i think we’ll be at least as strong at that position than we were last year, even after losing dent and dowtin.

“Hey jackwagon…do you think if either one of those two players had played at UGA that we wouldn’t have hoisted a trophy. ”

No, because you’re genius coaching staff would have used Newton as a tight end and Tebow as a kicker. Oh, and Bobo would have gone for field goals instead of td’s.

“You have no gray matter whatsoever.”

Grey matter (or Gray matter) is a major component of the central nervous system, consisting of neuronal cell bodies, neuropil (dendrites and both unmyelinated axons and myelinated axons), glial cells (astroglia and oligodendrocytes) and capillaries. Grey matter contains neural cell bodies, in contrast to white matter, which does not and mostly contains myelinated axon tracts.[1] The color difference arises mainly from the whiteness of myelin. In living tissue, grey matter actually has a grey-brown color which comes from capillary blood vessels and neuronal cell bodies.

If Dowtin had a clash with the coaching staff then yes he should be gone. I think that has been part of the problem all along, that the inmates are running the assylum. If a player can tell the coachs what they will and will not do and there are no reprocusisons, then that completely undermines the entire team. I am sure Dowtin was given the speach that a new day has dawned in Athens and he can either get with the program or get out. It was his choice and he decided he knew more than the coachs and left on his own. Maybe some others should follow suit or at least sit up and take notice.

Getting rid of Dowtin was the right thing to do. You have to get rid of these bad apples if you want to stop these players from getting arrested. If a player is not 100% committed then he has to go. The kid got arrested for assault and hid this fact from CMR. Kick his butt off the team and anyone else who wants to be a criminal or goof off with their school work and football.

The problem with UGA is the coaching, not the players. I love it when dawg/bama fans refer to Chizik as “cheesedick” yet the guy just coached his team to 14-0. Cam was not that big of a factor in the title game yet people keep saying that Cam is all Auburn had. I’d rather have Chizik as a head coach than CMR any day of the week. Period.

“Auburn had a nice team this year with Newton, Fairley and Dyer but can they sustain it year after year?”

Well, considering Chizik recruited the number 4 class of last year and has just moved Auburn into the top ten this year. Auburn took two Bama recruits away and one from UGA.

Problem is Richt won’t go along with that kind of ‘recruiting’ – kinda like Tuberville and you see where he is now – but then neither will McGarity, so Leeburn and his ‘ilk’ may just have to take their whiskey/beer/wine money, go back to Columbus and take Suzanne with him.

If Dowtin was a discipline problem and he didn’t show the coaches total respect then he is a cancer that needs to be weeded out. The players have got to realize that they are kids and that they can disagree with things that the coaches do and say but they will do it in a respectful way. CMR say’s if the players will buy into what we are trying to do then everything will be OK.
The difference between me and CMR is when I would say that to the players , I would not give them a choice. and CMR needs to assert himself more as the man in charge. ” If THEY WILL BUY INTO WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO” , hell don’t give them a choice ,it’s either CMR’s way or the highway. As to recruiting, 2005 was a bust, only 12 made it to Athens. 2006 was a great recruiting class. However all recruiting classes since 2006 have been fairly good but nothing to brag about. The Dawgs problems stem as much from that as from any other factor. The Dawgs need another class like the one from 2006. No problem with UGA releasing him, but Richt needs to quit giving them unconditional releases. This is the second player he has allowed to do this and it may end up biting us. If Dowtin was that disruptive then he should be forced to sit for a year or play at a lower level. An unconditional release is like a reward for bad behavior. I believe the Williams kid is also being given an unconditional release and could line up for UK or TN next season.

Bill, it’s not your job to report but there are some outlets that have a more complete story on Johnson if folks want to know. One thing of relevance is that he was Damon’s point man on Football scheduling. Obviously that’s an area that did not have a seamless transition. His Wife is from Tx as well. They all said what you would expect but there are quotes out there that indicate this is a non-issue.

Uunconditional release from Georgia is not punishment. He gets to leave a downwardly spiraling program and start anew There’s a chance he’s picked up by an SEC team that competes with us.
A real coach would have placed him at the bottom of the of the depth chart and make him work his way back. If he wants to leave let him quit and sit a year. All Richt is doing is leaving the door open for any disgruntled player to abandon this sinking ship for greener pastures.

Add this action to his absurd comments on Jan 4 should show most fans how inept the guy has become. As our competitors are loading their coaaching staffs with NFL trained assistants we’re left with a basicdally a high school coach as a OC, a wide receiver as a running backs coach and QB four years removed from graduation as the S&C coach.( by the way our basketball team has an NFL trained strength coach who doubles as a nutritionist, look what he done with that squad, hey Fox could you lend him out after the season.)

How do you tell if you have a good coaching staff? You count the number of days the light are off in the offices while the coaches are being wooed by other teams. As far as I know the lights have been on all the time at Butts- Mehre..

I don’t necessarily put all the blame on Richt. He works for an Athletic department while the 2nd most profitable in the NCAA is run like a country club. The complacency and cronyism over there has to affect a coach’s zeal.

Good, get Dowtin outta here. It’s funny how all the players that we had who “had attitude problems” showed what happens when you have those this past year-either got arrested or underperformed on the field. I’d rather UGA clean the trash out of the program and allow room for players who actually WANT to play for us rather than feel entitled to play every game.

As far as the Associate AD goes, it doesn’t really make a difference. McGarity is highly respected as a man and for what he does so he’ll be able to replace him easily.

It’s a good question edumacated. Recruiting the exact same players and a disproportionate amount show up in the paper. Have had for a while stiffer penalties and clearly a climate of hyper-scrutiny from media, fans, etc. Obviously there is more to it than punishments, threats, fear. I am starting to wonder what role the administration plays in this. I’m wondering if it wasn’t almost a situation where Evans was almost more concerned about proving that he wouldn’t stop the publicity or give preferential treatment so he could wave that flag, more than the actual prevention of it. (I don’t know about you, but I always thought IF nobody knew about a scooter bust, it never happened) I have had a former player tell me that Evans was real big on the show. meeting and more meetings. And they eventually just tuned it out. Then his demise makes you wonder if he wasn’t just putting up smoke screens the whole time.

We’ll see. One thing I know for sure. They don’t drive better or hate beer in every other college town. And nobody on the football staff here or anywhere else doesn’t try to stop this stuff if they could. Job one for McGarity in the off season if you ask me is to figure this out.

The soft culture that now permeates Athens will take a while to change keeping the same regime in place. I’m on record hoping we would have a change at the top; if it’s not going to happen we can only hope that they can put the house back in order.

The negativity as some would call it is natural, normal. If CMR had been more proactive in handling the problems some of us have seen clearly for at least the last 3 years now the negativity would not have reached the level it has. I can be pretty tolerant, however I can’t stomach the poor performance, lack of discipline, and lack of effort we’ve seen by the entire organization, coaches and players.

I also think C King should have been dismissed. He’s been a problem on and off the field. I think it’s going to be a slow crawl rebuilding our program, however, I will support CMR if I see positive results. For those who think they see us now going in the right direction have another sip of the kool aid. Me, I will wait for concrete evidence. Good day Dawgs….

Richt could use to look at a play out of Saban’s book. When Saban went to Bama he had meetings with his players explaining his philosophy, his process, laid out his expectations, asked them to buy in and give him a chance, and told the one’s who didn’t they would be showed the door.

When the season started about 25% of those sitting in the room that first day were gone. Richt should give that same speech to players and coaches alike, IMO. I just don’t know if he can pull off the changes that are needed. I want to be positive but being pragmatic, looking at the past, and using my experience, it’s hard to change directions with the same leadership and the same players. Good luck coach….

Explain it how you will, Georgia has underperformed since Stafford’s sophomore season and just plain gone downhill the past three years. Next year is critical as we see whether CMR can turn the program around. If we can’t beat Florida and win the East next year, CMR will be history.

Several points

a. Fran Tarkenton is a jerk and a moron. He knows, has done no more good for and is no more involved in UGA athletic than the average idiot who thinks he knows how to coach football that posts to these blogs. He obviously didn’t know it was more important for Evans that appearance was more important than substance.

b. Every player that has been involved with anything serious WHATSOEVER is no longer on the team. I want to see articles bashing the Big Orange for not even suspending players for a game when at UGA a similar offense is punished with banishment. I want to see articles bashing those like LSU who pick up the players UGA dismissed. I want someone with some common sense to write an article here that says there is a difference between being arrested for not having a middle name, not having enough money to pay a speeding ticket, drinking a beer at 20 years old, scooter infractions and then doing things that get you dismissed from the team. I want to see an article on how those things never officially occur in other college football towns. I want to see an article on how Cam Newton performed ethically while in Gainesville and how hypocritical UGA fans are that say we should have recruited him while simultaneously nashing their teeth when some kid her gets caught driving a scooter down a one way alley.

c. Who has time in their life to go on another teams blog and write stupid stuff? What kind of loser is that?

d.@ UGA fans are a bunch of babies. Your coach is a joke. He never won anything until he got hooked up with the Auburn board of Trustees who bought him the number 1 players in AL, AR, MS and LA last year, not to mention the number 1 JUCO player in the country. He was handpicked by those guys because they knew him as someone they could manipulate and he would look the other way while they do their dirty work. Tuberville wouldn’t. I bet you were one of the ones screaming “Why did we hire THIS guy!?” Who are you gonna pull for 3 years from now when Auburn doesn’t even have a football team? Moron.

Given the fact that these players are not kids but young adults consider this:
1. they want respect just like the next man or woman.
2. you cant tell them to act like a man but respond to coaches like kids.
3. kids dont have college admittance to institutions of higher learning and play on NCAA teams.
4. if you teach negative behaviors thinking it is in the privacy of a practice an get a negative reaction then you reap what you sow.
5. some players will play that game and some wont. remember coaches hide their bad behavior by letting it appear to be the players.

Part of being a man or woman is the ability to make decisions. While not always to everyones liking a decision nonetheless. Its easy to comment on an opportunity you never had or will. I say good luck to anyone who has a goal of moving forward in the right direction.

Here’s the problem with this program. You have two many undisciplined players, you have coaches worrying about replacing players when the coaches should be coaching up the players who are coning in 4 and 5 star players. Richard Samuels came in here as one of the most sought after players in the country and yet was used so sparingly this year it’s embarassing. Washun Ealey who owns virtually every High School record in Georgia has been at best sub par. Marlon Brown has been at best a fourth option on the field, and looks totally lost at times. Your defensive players look weak, misguided, out of shape, and soft. For years now we’ve watched Baccari Rambo not lock up when he tackles and constantly give up 3,4,and 5 extra yards consistantly this is clearly a coaching problem.Georgia has to make some hard choices this year, and it want matter if Jay Rome, Isiah Crowell, Damien Swann, C

Auburn has a higher rated “well above” UGA right based on 1 player, LB. And LSU is ahead by a 5-star OL. Other than that, neither have done any better…yet.
And Alabama is about to max out, we’ll see where it all shakes out. I think UGA still has some spots to climb. Of cource so will UF.

I would think that logically (if recruiting rankings are the key) the UGA/UF game this next season will come down to the past recruiting classes, the guys already in the depth chart, not this class of freshman. But them having the turnover could reset that. And of cource…the differnce makers….yet TBD.

Bill, I think these changes are still near the beginning of the transformation process McGarity is putting into place. It seems to me that he is using a very methodical process in evaluating each and every aspect of the athletic program and making changes or keeping people in place as a result on completed evaluations. These are not finished and we may see more in the future. He is performing as the CEO of the program as he should be.

Speaking of CEOs, didn’t CMR declare in about 2006 that he was looking at changing his role as a head coach to more of a CEO of the football program rather than actively coaching himself? He really thought he had strong enough assistant coaches and other personnel in place to have the program at an elite level for years to come. Wasn’t that when he promoted Bobo to OC? I honestly think that he was trying to improve the program by learning and growing as a leader of an organization (in this case the football program). This may be the case of delegating too much responsibility to others and it backfired. This turned out to be a wrong decision on his part, but maybe did not know how to reverse it once this organizational program was in place. I am encouraged because it appears McGarity came in and sat down with CMR and basically told him that he needs to be a coach and not the CEO – - that was the athletic director’s job. CMR tried to express his releif about that by saying he was excited to study football again, but it came off a little wrong. He loves coaching, made a decision to get away from the nuts and bolts of coaching for the good of the program, saw it was a wrong decision, and now McGarity is giving him the opportunity to correct that mistake. If this is the case, then this thing could be turned around.

Finally, it appears that CMR has difficulty making the tough decisions for the program – - hiring and firing assistant coaches, following through with disciplinary decisions, etc. He must grow in this to gain better control of the program. I feel that McGarity can help him with this and we will see progress.

I am a long time Dawg fan and a graduate of UGA during the Hershel Walker years. I have been as upset and frustrated as everyone else about that decline and current state of the program. But, I think we have reasons to be encouraged.

Most of the UGA haters here are kids that will never go to any school as fabulous and well respected as UGA. They likely are junior college wannabes too. See the Princeton Review’s opinion on 3 state of GA universities…………….GT/UGA and GC&SU. All ranked highly in the upper 25 % of public schools.

They hate UGA because they get a rise out of the so called UGA fans, or they think that they do. Kids. Teens, staying at home on Mom’s PC sipping big Uranged drinks and slamming bags of chips ar the UGA haters.

Usually, they pull for GT BASKETBALL but that has gotten rather foolish, so they pull for Florida but that too is full of pifalls. So …………. NOW they are AU fans and they just love Auburn and Scam Newton, when in fact, a year ago beyond one or two AU fans on this site, NOTHING was ever uttered one way or other about AU.

GO Dogs. Woof, woof, woof.

Continue to hate UGA kids ……………………..UGA could care less.

Good riddance to Dowtin. Please take Caleb King and Washaun Ealey with you. UGA needs to get rid of the cancer that is hurting this program. It starts with the coaches but the players are equally to blame. Central Florida players were quoted as saying that the team they played in the Liberty Bowl simply didn’t want to be there. This is an indictment on both coaches and players. The coaches need to step up but there also needs to be leadership from the players as well. Like it or not UGA fans, Richt is here for another year. He needs to get the attention of these players who feel they are bigger than the program. Getting rid of Dowtin is the first step. Finding an offensive line would be a good second one.

Too much bashing!!! Too much complaining!!! The SEC is the toughest conference in the nation; with the best players in the nation (check the draft / check the Pro Bowl). Understand CMR and Staff will be given this year to turn it around; all these recruits will be given a chance to play (I fault CMR and his Staff for not getting on the JC circuit sooner / these players are ready to make a difference; i.e. Alabama with Cody and Auburn with Newton and Fairley; the SEC will be loaded with JC players next year; UGA will probably have (2) ); trying to catch up for the last (4) years of incompetence will be decided this year; let’s shoot for the best: a better strength and conditioning program and an excellent recruitng year; if the Coaching does not get better, then a change will happen; let’s see what happens next year and move on!!! Writing snide remarks or bashing other Teams will not expediate any changes!!!! The SEC is the best!!!!

Not unless the entire coaching staff went with them. So no, not really. It will be the same old same old as long as Richt is in charge.

1. Dowtin needed to go – not being forthcoming to the coach about the arrest was wrong. Wish him the best.
– This is a good thing – and will open up another scholarship.
– Jones and Richard Samual will be ready in 2011.

2. McGarity needs to get his folks in place on his terms. When Damon Evans took over – he overhauled the “Staff” pretty drastically.

3. UGA needs a big year in 2011 – period.
I can understand “cycles” and rebuild years – but to Colorado – and then losing to UCF really poured salt in the wounds.
It’s hard to admit that UGA sucks as a football team and a program – but that is the truth for 2010.

4. If we lose back to back to Boise and South Carolina – Richt is indeed toast.

That’s exactly what I thought .CMR blames everybody except himself and his coaching staff. He may talk a big game in the papers but the only people leaving is the S&C team and the players. NO COACHES speaks volumes as to who is getting the blame from CMR and the AD.
But I do think McGarity told CMR that UGA owed him that much if he is saying that the coaches are not the problem, but you and the entire coaching staff will be gone if there isn’t big improvements next year. We will know CMR and his coaches fate after the SouthCarolina game.

K-Baby, well thought out and well written. I’ve thought outside the box on numerous occasions about Richt’s relationship with Evans, how they work together, etc., looking for deeper reasons than just the inability to coach and run the program. Your “theory” is plausable, however, I have to disagree that Richt just isn’t up to the task. I hope I’m wrong but I believe in my heart McGarity will have to fire him next year.

McGarity is making changes to the entire athletic department at UGA, McGarity’s job is dependant on the success of the entire department this encludes the success of the football program which has been in decline for the past 3 yrs, In order for Coach Richt to continue as coach he must reverse this trend, He has 2 yrs remaining on present contract, He will not be offered an extension and unless he turns things around (at least 8 wins in 2011) he will not be the coach at UGA, I’m sure McGarity would like to see Richt turn things around but I also think he would like to have his own man in that position.

I don’t have a problem with Marcus Dowtin or Arthur Johnson leaving. A manager needs to have his own staff in place and most of the folks on your blog agree that bad attitudes and legal problems need to pack their bags and leave Athens. It’s obvious folks will second guess dismissing a QB who’s now at LSU, but when the incident happened in Milledgeville the majority of UGA fans wanted him gone.

A player with a bad attitude is a cancer in the locker room (Terrell Owens etc, etc), even if his position is thin on talent. I would hope the coaching staff will alter it’s recruiting a little and try and find a JUCO replacement. At the same time, the redshirt players can step up along with underclassmen.

All in all, from my standpoint these are great moves!

The lack of discipline in this program is a far bigger problem than talent. Doesn’t matter how much talent is there if the current culture remains. Dowtin leaving will leave us thin at ILB, but it is a positive for the program. I hope coach Tereshenski runs off a few more. I don’t care who they are.

I’d like to think UGA could recruit and win with players that don’t have bad attitudes and discipline problems. But the reality of life in the SEC is that every team has to manage this problem. Maybe the key is that players who are leaders on both sides of the ball aren’t those guys, and can help keep the trouble-makers in line, probably better than the coaches can. If you run off every player who is a ‘thug’, that’s all well and good, but just be prepared to live with 7-6, 8-5, etc. You think Auburn would have been playing on Monday night without Fairley?

Coaches, what ever happened to fun on the field and let the players play? Certainly the talent was on the sidelines. Self centered control and anger management issues are not what you are paid millions to have or cover up in any athletic program. Coaches are paid to win games. Players are there to play. I wonder if you felt the team silently rebelling by not getting a win at the liberty bowl. It was obvious UCF was not evenly matched to UGA. Excuses from Coaches when clearly we have the talent on the sidelines is unacceptable. Hmmm…. Based on UCF responses that UGA did not come to play/win and your own eye witness, there may be a lot of truth to their statements. Private thoughts saying, “we do not agree with your game plan”, without putting their scholarships at risk can speak louder than a dawgs bark. Private thoughts can and will cost a Coach millions at UGA expense. The irony is they will be replaced/gone before an enitre team of players. Now think about that while chewing on your dawg bone fans.

When Bobo wasn’t replaced the rest of the SEC celebrated. What amazes me the most is that CMR didn’t learn anything from him not being able to evaluate coaching talent because of his friendship with Willie Martinez. A good head coach has got to be able to separate friendship from a fair evaluation of his coaches and I don’t care who you are if the coach isn’t do a very good job you replace him
That’s where we are with Bobo. Bobo has been a coach for 10 years and the offensive coordinator for three. If he was well respected as a coordinator wouldn’t other teams be wanting to interview him for head coaching positions. All of the other top tier teams in the SEC have lost their coordinators to the NFL or to under achieving teams who are trying to get better.
What has happened to our coordinators? One was finally fired, thank GOD, and the other has continued to bring down the entire team. Nobody being interested in Bobo speak’s for itself . If CMR could see pass his friendship for him he would see how unqualified Bobo is as an offensive coordinator in the SEC.
The reason it is so upsetting is because most of us don’t want to see CMR fired , only his under performing coaches but Mark is so hard headed he would rather go down with everybody than do the right thing. THAT’S NOT LOYALTY IN MY BOOK THAT STUPIDITY , CONCEIT , AND TOO PROUD TOO ADMIT WHEN YOU ARE WRONG.

Mike Bobo really ran up the stats winning 6 games against 6 teams all with a LOSING RECORD.

# 72 in the nation in 1st Downs

# 55 in the nation in Total Offense

# 62 in the nation in having your quarterback, sacked

# 56 in the nation in converting 3rd Downs

Not signing any of the top-recruits on offense last year and none 2011 either

2009 recruiting class is gone – off the roster

No FB, no TB, no wide-outs, no OL, no good play calls (if he did call good ones, he quit so his offense would be balanced)

As for not having a running game, was 7 carries a game for 1 point 9 yards a carry (less than 2) by Aaron Murray throwing gasoline on that fire ?

I believe the decline of the Georgia football team coincided with the arrival of Damon Evans as Athletic Director. Perhaps, he put too much non-football responsibility on Coach Richt. As an executive myself I can understand being made responsible for things outside the realm of my primary focus will become a distraction and cause me to loose focus on what is truly important.
Coach Richt did a fantastic job before Daman Evans got there and during Evans administration Richt declined. That tells me Evans demanded things of Coach that detracted him from football.

No doubt, sandman. I am sure if I polled those exact same folks about Coach Bobo, he doesn’t fair well.

But I wonder if the question was posed in the context of reality and not hypothetical:

If you were Richt and knew you had to win x games this year or lose your job, would you be willing to risk installing a new offensive philosophy just a year after installing a new defensive philosophy (and probably going to still be feeling the effect of that for at least another partial season, if not longer depending on recruiting)??

Now he takes on a whole nuther learning curve. That’s a given. Has been everywhere else where major changes in staff and style happened. That’s some guaranteed losses. He’s not going to be granted any time for that, even assuming a new OC would eventually turn out to be great, which isn’t a given.

And I don’t think getting rid of Bobo would changed the minds of the fans that are down on him, and given it would certainly cost him his job, I don’t blame him for just taking his chances.

I’m sure he and McGarity discussed all that. And concluded that what he really needed to do to keep his job THIS year was just win the games that he lost by a TD or a FG, which logically seems a lot easier to do with what he has. Defense going into its second full year alone could be enough to make that amount of difference, doing nothing to the offensive side. (which there are some very identifyable areas there to improve as well) And If the defense doesnt improve, wouldn’t have mattered anyway to fire Bobo, they are all gone.

He is a one hit wonder clown who is/was the perfect coach to oversee “pay-for-play” because he is/was SO DESPERATE to prove that he belonged, especially when he was so rudely greeted by auburn folks, and even charles barkley. The auburn limo has been quite active, and I am convinced that the cost of that will be a dear one, and will begin to be felt very soon. My thoughts on Richt are no different than any other passionate but logical Dawg fan, and that is that he has brought quite a lot to Athens, but that the recent slide is quite troubling. I really hope that we take a major step forward this year, but if not, my patience will probably have run out.
