Mark Richt doesn't want to "confuse" Aaron Murray with too much change. (Associated Press)
It’s the postseason, so fans and columnists are naturally devoting a lot of energy to parsing Mark Richt’s intriguing but typically vague comments at his season-end press conference.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t a whole lot of substance there, and what there was isn’t likely to make folks feel any better about the direction of the Georgia football program.
In other words, a typical Richt press conference.
The most interesting revelation was that UGA athletic director Greg McGarity, who was notable in his presence at the press gathering, has taken some of the administrative duties off Richt’s plate, which the coach says is “going to help free me up to [spend] more time doing the things I love the most, which is study the game of football and be an expert and be on the cutting edge.”
Richt didn’t spell out what that meant, but he indicated he was “not making any plans” to take back the playcalling from offensive coordinator Mike Bobo. He said he would meet with his offensive staff to “just look at what we’re doing and why we’re doing it and making sure we’re on the right path.”
Some wondered if he is contemplating revamping or opening up the offense, perhaps installing more spread option elements to take advantage of quarterback Aaron Murray being a dual threat.
But then Richt noted that when you make a lot of changes, it’s tough on the players. “If you just change for the sake of changing, then all of a sudden you’ve got to relearn something all over again. Do I want to confuse Aaron Murray right now? Heck, no. That guy knows what he’s doing, and he’s going to have a lot more confidence going into next season.”
So it doesn’t seem likely that he’s talking about installing the fun ’n’ gun.
Richt’s comments that Bobo and offensive line coach/running game coordinator Stacy Searels “have done a great job — not a good job but a great job” raised a lot of eyebrows and drew the expected hoots of derision. But, really, what did you expect him to say? It’s too late in the game for Richt to be reshuffling his offensive staff. He has to play the hand he dealt himself.
Perhaps a clue to what Richt will be doing with all this extra football time came when he said, “One of the biggest things I am going to be looking for is effort in the team and everyone around here. We need to do what we do well and do it full-speed. As a head coach, that’s the number one point of emphasis that I am going to watch for.”
Coupled with the installation of “old school” Joe Tereshinski in charge of the strength and conditioning program, you might take that to mean that Richt will be taking names and kicking butts during the offseason to try and light a fire under his team.
But then you remember this is Richt we’re talking about, the man mentor Bobby Bowden once joked was so calm and cool you needed to take his pulse to make sure he was still alive. It’s hard to imagine Richt summoning up any inner Nick Saban.
So the bottom line is that Richt says “we’re not looking to blow anything up.”
No wholesale changes, in other words. Which is not surprising. Sure, the Dogs just concluded a poor season in a lethargic manner that makes a good case for major change being needed, but the fact is that Richt only has the one season to turn things around and, as he noted, change confuses players. So whatever change we see on the field in 2011 is likely to be incremental and more of the attitude adjustment variety.
Richt tried to buck up the Bulldog Nation by declaring, “In my opinion we’re very close.”
He meant that the elements are there in his program for success.
But the reality is that if the head coach doesn’t manage to get more out of those elements in the coming season, we’re likely to be very close to the end of the Mark Richt era at UGA.
Were you disappointed by what Richt had to say or was it pretty much what you expected? And what “cutting edge” changes would you hope his football studies produce for the 2011 season?

I openly stated i wanted him to resign after the bowl game but after reading between the lines, I am willing to give him another year.
The important stuff is coming though.
He must land a good recruiting class.
He must recruit 1 or 2 nose guards that can play now.
I would love to hear comments from him or read comments from someone in the know about the redshirted players and how they will contribute in 2011.

It was what I expected, but still disappointed.
The only question I have is if the removal from Richt of his adminstrative duties is just to ease the transition to the new coach UGA will have next year.

Presser was very disappointing, no plan, no direction, sort of lala land, calling coaches great, when record indicates otherwise. Just seems that his time has run its course, why wait, just prolonging the inevitable. It has become evident that CMR cannot right this ship, guess we will really see, but just doesn’t seem possible based on what was said, and performance in bowl game.

These top players from Georgia are realizing that other competing schools like Auburn, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina have better coaching staffs. What a turn around in fortune for Georgia football tbe last three years. If richt was a business owner he’d go broke – he is not a good manager or decision maker.Hope Richt turns it around – glad we have McGarity helping him and deciding where we go from here.

There is a lot of howling going on right now and justifiably so-we looked decent at times this past season but overall it was a lackluster campaign. We just didn’t look like what I expect a Georgia football team to look like.
That said, I honestly don’t believe we need wholesale changes. We do need better strenght and conditioning but what is getting lost in all of the current furor is that is one of the main things, if not THE main thing, that CMR told Greg McGarity we need. It turns out that CMR had tried to get funding for this when Damon Evans was here but Evans was reluctant to commit additional money to football. Instead, his strategy was to spread some of that money around and win championships in multiple sports.
I knew during the third quarter of the Mississippi State game we were in for a long season. Our guys were gassed. Better strength and conditioning will keep that from happening again.
This illustration alone proves that we as fans don’t know as much sometimes as we want to think we do. All along Richt was trying to get something he knew he needed to make the team better. I didn’t know he was trying to upgrade S&C and neither did any of you. They just don’t tell us stuff like that and they have no responsibility to. Now, though, that this has been addressed it will help our program in the future.
Before we burn Richt at the stake consider one comment and one question. First, when you fire the coach you know you are giving up 2-3 years as the new coach gets his people and program in place. Often times, patience in the face of panic is well rewarded. Mark Richt didn’t suddenly forget how to coach. Second, who are you going to replace him with that will be such a substantial upgrade and how do you even know that magic person wants to come to UGA?

It’s over (Richt’s program)…. Place his comments right alongside his infamous comments about maybe we should have practiced tackling more but we were afraid of injuries(paraphrase). Richt is about as close to the cutting edge as Earth is from Pluto. One thing is for sure, it is obvious that those in charge of the HC have exhibited no more of a desire for change than Richt. The entire program is CLUELESS.

Richt chose to become more of an ‘administrative coach’; he seems to be playing it off now like it wasn’t by choice and not how he wanted it. He was more involved in the football aspects of things his first 5-6 years and then backed off. 2007 was successful so it confirmed to him that he was doing right. 2008 should’ve been a red flag; we had a ton of talent and barely squeaked by a lot of inferior opponents while getting killed by the ‘big boys’. Yet b/c we were 10-3 he and everyone else just ignored it. Then came the past 2 years-awful. He chose to become more like Bobby Bowden then continuing to be Mark Richt and that not on the AD, that is on him. Plenty of other coaches are more involved in the football-Saban and Meyer are perfect examples. I know Meyer quit but I never heard anything about them not ‘having time to focus on football’. You’ve got to be kidding me w/ that BS. I really do love Richt though, I wish none of this was happening and would love for him to bring me back on the side of believing that he should coach us for as long as he would like and that he will bring us a NC. He’s just got a lot to prove now to keep his job and starting off the year feeding us a load of BS probably isn’t a good sign. He does seem to finally have realized the issue, just hasn’t taken responsibility for it. We shall see though….

I’ve supported Richt since day 1 but I have lost faith. He gets less out of more and it is disappointing & I am tired of it. The SEC is on the verge of winning a 5th MNC & the Dawgs haven’t been one of them. Not even close. South Carolina, Arkansas & Miss. St. have passed us. That makes us at best the 8th best team in the SEC. That is unacceptable. We lost to a Confrence USA team in the bowl game. That is unacceptable. We can no longer lure the best talent in the state to come to Athens. That is unacceptable. We are pretty much a laughing stock and I have no faith that this coaching staff can turn things around. I feel the writing is on the wall & we are less than 12 months from a coaching change. I hate feeling this way about the University of Georgia. I never thought that we would again fall to this depth. But here we are and none of Coach Richt’s empty speech makes me feel better.

Bill, I think that there will be some changes! CMR just doesn’t know if it will be BOTH Bobo and Searels. While everyone is declaring the end for our coach, I am predicting a rebound season. Why? ..because CMR knows that it’s do or die for next season! People surprise you when their backs are against the wall, and he has proven that he can figure it out (or he wouldn’t be here a decade). If not, I’m wrong, we get a new coach, move on! Go Dawgs!

We got behind the 8-ball with all the AD distractions and troubles IMO. Richt is a great guy. I hope he turns it around next season for everyone’s sake. But IMO he doesn’t have the coaching ability to rise above the level of his talent. Give him a team that will send 5-6 players to the next ranks and he will win you 9-10 games.Give him less than that and you get this year.Give him a whole team of 4 star players and he still won’t give you but 10 wins. No way our team with present coaching staff can win the East next year.Tennessee will be back before we will.

Two things:
1) He spoke like a politician and said what a politician would say! Richt is an old-school religious
politician–his words are only for entertainment
2) When was Georgia ever this dominant football program everyone wants to relive. If we think about it, Richt has been, in recent history, the best thing that has happened to Georgia football. Of course, with the resources and recruiting base available, these expectations make sense, yes, but let’s cool it a little guys.

You are correct in assessing that the most likely reason that more changes were not made is due to the fact that Richt sees this as his last season if there is not significant improvement and staff changes would make it another year of transition. In other words, he doesn’t have time to make a change. I think a change that really needs to be made is removing Garner as the recruiting coordinator and hiring a full-time, dedicated recruiting coordinator. Our talent evaluation has obviously been lacking the last few years. We are recruiting in a very lazy manner based on the stars that players are given by the recruiting services and not based on our own coaches analysis of tape. Also, when I hear comments like the ones made by Tank Carradine’s coach that “it just seemed like FSU wanted him more”, I want to vomit. Do the coaches at UGA not realize that they are recruiting and coaching for their lives as this point? If a player wants to go somewhere else then that is their decision, but it should never be because they didn’t feel like UGA wanted them because we desperately need help. I think the sense of entitlement that Walsh mentioned has run from top to bottom in the program.

It was about what you would expect out of Richt. He was right that he felt we were close. Close to having a new coach. We have the talent we are just not using the talent we have. To run a pro style offense you have to have very good offense and defense lines. WE don’t have these type of mean linemen. We are a reflection of our coach which is nothing seems to bother them. What I have saw is talent that used to respond when we needed too. But that happened for so long until it just became like don’t worry it will work out, we will be ok!!! This team could and would win the SEC next year if he was to let Grantham install his mindset on the team. Richt needs to get back at doing what he does best and tweek this offense and use more of our athletes. WE should play more 4 and 5 wide receiver sets. Just to spread the field because our line is not real strong. The recruits will not help that much this year and its very unlikely the would come. Why would they just so they could be redshirted??? That has become the Richt way!!! He better get out there and find some jucco players and get them fast because his time is very limited!!! SEC CHAMPIONSHIP or bye bye Richt!!!

“Cutting edge” and Mark Richt don’t belong in the same sentence. I’ve always been a Richt supporter but to say you’re “very close” to having “cutting edge changes” in your football program after 10 years of the same (and after a blow-up year) is just PR talk.
I also wonder what “cutting edge” football Richt is now going to study? The spread offense? Sorry Richt, Meyer’s been running that on you for 6 years now, West Virginia beat you with it in the Sugar Bowl in 2006, Auburn killed you with it this year-and you’re just now noticing? GIVE ME A BREAK!!

A fan that will actually take a logical look at the program!! What a refreshing change to these “so Called fans” that all they want to do is change for change sake. Or should I say Obama supporters.
One more idea to look at for you. How much has President Adams “Admissions committee” works against getting the needed talent in the program? How many scholarships has “his committee” rejected that we have known about (4 or 5)? How many did Richt not even offer because he knew they would not get past the committee? Could Odel Thurmond get into UGA now? Thomas Davis? Greg Blue? I do not think so and without that mean streak then you are going to have problems with the right attitude on defense.
If you “so called fans” really want to do something then you need to start getting Adams removed or it will not matter who the coach is for the team.

The UGA coaches and the Bulldog Nation got played by Dickson as to think he was coming to UGA, he was wearing a Georgia hat week at the Under Armour practices letting people to think he was possibly coming to UGA, I think he knew all along as to where he was going, along with all these other recruits that UGA thinks is coming. I said when Richt did not go for it on 4th and inches in the FIRST QUARTER that he just lost some recruits over that call. The kids of today like a offense 7 defense that is exciting, not conservative, and I was right. I believe that UGA might get only 2 recruits left to come to UGA, i would be surprised if they get more.A big supporter for UGA told me the other day that Bobo the BOZO is holding the players back with his play calling, that he heard directly from the players. Take for example the bowl scores from the Ala. game & MSU game, I bet Richt would have called off the dogs about scoring so much when he have gotten ahead by only 3 touchdowns. Richt & company are getting left behind on a lot of things, starting with RECRUITING !!!!

There wasn’t anything intriguing about Richt’s presser. It was the same ol’ garbage that Bowden warned UGA about when Richt was hired – he’s too nice…not tough enough to win. For all the positive things he’s done for UGA, he’s also done something equally embarrassing.
And for all you jock-sniffing fans – nothing on these message boards makes a darn bit of difference to recruits. Here is my belief – I believe we need to recruit and coach more like Stanford. I didn’t see any thugs on the field the other night, just alot of heart that resulted in a championship caliber team.
I also believe many, like myself, have had an unspoken impression that Mark Richt is a magician who has kept a secret weapon up his sleeve the past four years. In the back of my mind, I keep believing he has an ace in his back pocket or wild card hidden somewhere that is going to prove his was right all along. This “ace” or “wild card” will prove that his smooth talking will support he was right over the past few years and we were right for continuing to believe in him. I still do believe in him, but it is because of what he says, not what he does or has done. Which, in reality, makes me ignorant as opposed to the Dawgs being winners.

Georgia didnt have success before Richt came to Athens. Then he brought us four straight ten win seasons, an SEC title, and two BCS bowl wins. We are going to take a running back out as soon as he makes a good play. He looks tired after a good run. Let’s go with the little guy. He will punish that SEC defense. We gonna rotate boys. That’ll tire the other team out. Don’t worry about who is running well. We have 3 capable backs. I promised all of you playing time. Leave that big freshmen on the bench so we can redshirt him.

It amazes me how similar you and I think when it comes to UGA football.
IF McGarity isn’t going to fire CMR this year then why would there be any personal changes. It would make no sense because if CMR doesn’t improve in 2011 than he will be fired and a new head coach will be hired , who will want to bring in his own coaches so why fire some of the CMR coaches this year , that aren’t doing a good job, when anyone you replaced them with may get fired next year.Way to many changes could happen and too disruptive on the players.
Now if CMR wins 9 or 10 games then no changes are needed.

Sad days in Athens. Richt has lost the team and knows he only has one year to get it right, thus the “no major changes” line. He is essentially going down with the ship.
What the Dawgs need is a drill instructor type to whip them into shape and demand dicipline. We have a good talent level, but no sense of urgency to get it right. Jsut a bunch of chatter, window dressing.

Thank you Carlton, I’m glad that someone out there understands my philosophy. Things like bowling, swimming, horseback riding (if you recall, I took our players to the UGA Equestrian Center about 4 years ago in lieu of a practice)build good team character. Not things like yelling at players, intense weight lifting with an “animal” for a S&C coach or any of that other nonsense. Between all the bowling and swimming we’ll be doing this off season, our boys will be “locked in” mentally for Boise State. See you at the Dome. God Bless.

Contractual obligations between Richt, his staff and UGA are too costly to jettison right now. Period.
Being stuck like UGA is, they have to let Richt try one more year. We have no choice. He knows it, the UGA staff know it and the UGA admin folks know it. His speech yesterday was to give some window dressing to the public and the HS kids. Nothing more. Period.
By allowing him to stay …………. the UGA Admin folks think that sends a postive message to HS recruits. That mode is failing, however. We have not had one committment since August. Scary it is. Last night, the all star game in St Pete revealed more players leaving Georgia for AU and Alabama. Not good that is. Not good at all. Instability it is called.
The next ugly shoe to drop will be signing day with 2 or 3 or 4 possible de commitss and then the Boise State game. When UGA loses that game …………… the hooting will be heard to Alaska. Another 1-4 start and he will be fired on the spot. TG will become the temp HC for UGA until next December, because UGA will then not be in any bowl. Period.
Right now ………………UGA cannot do one thing. It would cost them about $12,000,000.00 PLUS, whatever $$$ they would have to dump on an entirely new staff. UGA has to wait and ride out this particualr storm. It is not life and death, I might add here.

I was really impressed with the design of the Stanford offensive scheme which is run out of the same formation that we use. Hopefully, we will see better designed plays for today’s defenses.
For the last few years at UGA, I don’t remember seeing holes to run through or wide open receivers to throw to. The great teams get that on over 50% of all plays.

Not a good start to the 2011 season in losing on at least one key recruit last night. Grantham has promised we are going to land some very big fish, but it wouls sure make me feel better to see them landing sooner rather than later. This is going to be a tough off-season, but the team, and the fans, have to learn that nothing comes easy. The team who works the hardest and executes the best normally wins. Period. You’re assuming that Richt ever knew how to coach. You’re wrong.
The biggest change that CMR needs to make is to stop recruiting the low-class illiterates and goons who he seems to think will win for him and keep his oversized paychecks coming in. Jerks like Marcus Dowtin, A.J. Green, Washaun Ealey, Caleb King, and others too numerous to mention are not team players, they’re thug wannabes who are much closer to a gang than a team.

Coach Richt stepped up to the plate. He was enthusiastic, visionary and confident. CMR has had a tough couple of years. That goes with the territory. After many 10 plus win seasons it is expected that things will go down for two or three years before returning to the top ten status that Richt led us to in the early years so often. AD and Adams know that we have a gem in CMR and they are willing to stick with him for the next three years to turn things around. It will take three years to get defense on track and things turned. Great news from Athens and lots of hope from CMR.

I question Richt’s ability to get the top recruits anymore. We are already seeing that they are going to the more successful programs…Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina, Florida, even Tennessee. Maybe we can meet some of our needs through JUCO transfers. I don’t care how good your coaches are, if you don’t have the talent, it’s hard to win consistently. It seems unlikely that this coaching staff can turn things around in a year’s time, but I really hope I’m wrong. I think it’s entirely possible, maybe even probable, that we’ll start out the football season 0 and 2. Another 4, 5, or 6 loss season appears to be a distinct possibility.

It only took a few years for him to settle into the “figurehead” coaching style that he saw Bowden do for so long.

By cutting edge, let’s hope Richt means:
1- New blocking scheme–like South Carolina O- Line went to
2- More creative play calls on offense AND special teams–think Boise State or LSU
3- Get Murray running more, now that you have 3 capable QB’s in case of injury, or bench Murray, and let a better more accurate passer–who can throw the long ball with accuracy, take over
4- New ways to stop the run for the 3-4 D-Line that don’t require lots of experience
5- Cutting edge of conditioning & nutrition
6- Cutting edge of attitude stuff–get someone to lead that effort too
7- More rushing production, like Auburn
8- Borrow ideas from different sports to get an advantage
9- mental toughness training–dominate opoponents–think Stanford
10- new ways to use TE’s–look at the Falcons
11- new ways to use a slot guy–look at how Florida used Percy Harvin–use B Smith the same way

When is anyone going to admit that the players we are recruiting have changed? The top recruits today look at college football as a step to the NFL. Everyone thinks they are NFL material. They do not come to Georgia to represent and honor their home state anymore. It is just a way that they can get something from an institution for 2-3 years (required by NFL). Education (yeah right, very few) Dickson on TV last night sounded like a third grader. You think he can pass a college level speech class? The 4-5 star recruits today are looking for fame and the most direct route to the NFL. UGA has to change our antiquated recruiting tactics. Looking for a few good men and good Christian character produces 6-7 teams…Do we sell our soul to the devil??

Most disappointing of all, I was looking for an explanation and apology for the lack of effort and preparation for the Liberty Bowl. There needs to be more accountablity for that game; you can’t just ignore it and go on. 1) Run the ball more often–last 3 SEC Champs ran it for 215 to 290 a game average
2) Stop the run–last 3 SEC Champs have had great run defenses–like 100 a game or less
Georgia was at the bottom of the SEC in both areas, to win the SEC, must be at the top in both areas.

Some friendly offensive suggestions that are not meant to be offensive to friendly Bobo-ites, but might be:
1. Design some 2nd & 10 plays other than a run between the tackles following an incomplete pass on first down. This is our single most predictable play call.
2. 1st or 2nd & 20 are NOT mandatory running/screen pass downs. Central Florida taught us that.
3.. Orson Charles averaged 2 touches per game. Seems like some lost potential there…….
4. Carlton Thomas barely weighs more than the football and should not be running up the middle.
5. Design more than 4 running plays unless those 4 kick butt. Do we even have 4, or just 3?!
6. Don’t rely upon the run when your offensive line isn’t run-blocking better than a peewee team.
7. Put the offensive foot on the gas pedal until the game is OVER. We forfeit too many drives by doing nothing to challenge the defense (end of 1st half vs. Auburn – 40 seconds, no attempt to get to field goal range). We take a knee. I think we did the same vs. Central Florida before the half.
7. Finally, the most important one —- DON’T STOP WHAT IS WORKING UNTIL THE DEFENSE DOES! (2 Examples: GA Tech 2010, Kentucky 2009). After our offense stopped vs. KY, Bobo said “we probably should have run that play more in the 2nd half.” (referring to roll-out passes to Charles & T. King that went unstopped in 1st half). After Tech, Coach Richt said “we probably should have thrown the ball more in the 2nd half.” (220 yds, 3 TDs 1st half — 5 passes thrown in 2nd half). Note the similarity — AFTER the game, we figure that out.
If Bobo is going to be predictable and logic-defying (3rd & 4 vs Arkansas late in game – no dumpoff receivers, Murray’s sacked, we lose), please find a genius OC and let Bobo be QB coach. Once we have a GOOD defense again, we can afford inconsistent offenses. Until then, we need to assume it will take 40 points to win every game, not 30. Bobo-ites praise our 7 straight games with 30+. But, we lost 2 of those, and almost let Tech come back by crawling into an offensive shell, then letting Ealey stupidly score on the last TD instead of taking a knee at the 5. Go Dawgs!

UGA insider, if our program has another down year in 2011 wouldn’t the university lose money by keeping Richt? How would that affect donations? What does Richt and his staff’s buyout drop to next year? If the total buyout drop to around 10 million or less it might be worthwhile to bring in a new coach. I am going to try and stay positive and give Richt the benefit of the doubt for one more year. Changing to a 3-4 defense is not as easy as people who don’t know football make it out to be. The nose guard is what makes the defense run. He is the single most important player on the field. I want to give Granthem some credit for the job he did the first year. We have to have a few true nose guards to play his defense. You can’t just stick a good lineman in there and hope for the best. My biggest question is on the offensive side and no, it’s not Bobo. I can’t fathom why our O-line is as questionable as it is. That was suppossed to be the heart and soul of our offense this year. Instead, it was the weakest and most disappointing. Let’s give CMR another year before we start calling for his head. He has done a good job at UGA other than the past few years with the off the field stuff. Let’s see what he can do under the gun.

Dooley had his bad years for sure, but he never let Georgia lose every year to one team like say…Florida.
Richt has had that blank look for a while now. The cameras hardly ever catch him coaching. I honestly think he has delegated his duties down to being a sideline cheerleader. The only time I remember seeing him coach this year was when he got on to Murray for running with the ball and scoring in the first game. That turned out to be a mistake, because Murray wouldn’t run the next week against SC when he should have. Face it, this guy has his mind elsewhere. Maybe it’s family, maybe it’s a midlife crisis, who knows, who cares. Pay somebody else millions to coach UGA. The only reason McGarity hasn’t canned this guy yet is because he doen’t want to alienate half of the fan-base (you know, the half that doesn’t understand the game) in his first year on the job. Next year, short of an SEC East title with a Florida victory, he is gone.

I absolutely hate the “who are we going to get if we fire richt crowd”. They want to be a mediocre program and stay middle of the pack for fear of what? That is a freakin loser mentality. Winners make bold moves and take daring chances to get to the top. Auburn got rid of tuberville and they are playing in the national championship. UT got rid of Fulmer and now dooley has them on the right track. And yes I know kiffen came in for a year in between and jilted them but the chance they took is still worth the risk and a better optoin than hanging on to Fulmer.
And to all of you fans who want to try and compare Richt’s tenure to Dooley, understand that the college football landscape has changed. To stay on top in the SEC you have to be extremely driven and that tends to burn most people out. Once a coach loses his edge in this conference it is over. The life expectancy of an SEC coach is probably going to be only 10-12 years at one school going forward. Urban Meyer had that edge and drive and he only lasted six years at UF. I wouldn’t be suprised at all to see Saban step down in the nnext few years, especially if he wins another national title. We are in a new era of SEC football and Richt has grown stale. Time to move forward.

The schedule in 2011 is the easiest I have ever seen since I started following the Dawgs in 1973.
TN will still be rebuilding, Newton will be gone at Auburn, and Florida should have some pains adjusting to a new coaching staff. If Richt can’t create some roadkill in 2011, he never ever will.
Also, the days of the 190 pound QB are over. Tebow and Newton set the bar, so we better start looking for a 6′4″ 245lb. QB. OBs are bigger than tight ends. Everybody else is gonna have one. Maybe Richt could study that.

This whole program has lost its swagger and toughness that it had in 2002-2005. I’m sure former players from those teams are very disappointed. Name me one school in the SEC that would hire Mike Bobo as its OC. Auburn has Gus Malzhan, Florida has Weiss and we have Bozo……terrific.

Does anyone really believe Tennessee’s program is better off now than it was under Fulmer? The jury is definitely still out on Dooley. For layinlow, I’m not saying don’t fire Rich but if UGA were to fire him. Then they must have an option that is better than Richt and right now there really isn’t anyone, who UGA can realistically hire, that has proven he is a better option than Richt. So be careful what you ask for?

We had a bigger QB-Zack Mettenberger. Dumba$$ had to go and sexually assault a female in South GA though and now he’s going to kill it at LSU.
And Richt can’t tell the difference between a QB and a tight end-he tried to recruit Cam Newton as one!

Palmetto has it right. Has anyone ever offered Bobo a job? Bobby Bowden used to say that he would only hire an assistant who wanted to be a head coach. Could you imagine Bobo as a head coach anywhere other than a high school? Our top prospect, Crowell, looked not even average last night. I didn’t see him gain more than three yards on a carry all night and this was against high school players. He has no concept of blocking, so Bobo will love him. We are in trouble.

Get rid of the FB! Move to a 3 wideout, 1 back set. Implement the zone read, amke it a one cut run the the tailbacks. Simply and spread the field out this way for your linemen and your tailbacks.
Anything, but stop the short passes to the FB.

Remember a few years back when CMR ran Jasper Sanks into the line against Auburn on the three in the final seconds in Athens and time ran out because we had squandered our timeouts? The next year he gave up play calling so he would have more time to manage the team and the game. Is the team or the game managed? Heck, no!!! This is the same mumbo-jumbo.
And as far as recruiting, we get the recruits who want to play and giggle like school children on the sidelines during games. The SEC elite get recruits who want to compete for championships.

i feel that if CMR wants to be on cutting edge we need to throw in a few wild cat formation plays. Lets look at the best right now. How predictable was Auburn? Thats 4 new plays. MR just because because you feel that you might get confused by adding new plays doesnt mean that AM will be confused. Lets take a look. Arron taking x number of hours of college courses. study time/ social time film review time the pressure to know all the plays. with how quickly he thinks on his feet. i think he’ll be ok with those 4 plays. the game maybe easier for him because the coverage wont always be as good. Lets do it MR. go Dawgs.

I love the University of Georgia and I’m faithful to the institution. To me the University comes first, not the coach, not an assistant, not a player, not an alum etc. As such CMR’s latest press meeting is very disappointing (but expected.)
CMR is beholden to himself and his assistants; he is beholden to his assistants so that those assistants in turn will be his acolytes and loyal to him to the very end. CMR does not hold his assistants to performance standards. CMR judges his assistants by their loyalty to him.
Does CMR carry himself or act in a manner that demonstrates that the University is his top interest and priority? Does CMR demonstrate any sense of urgency? Does CMR show any embarrassment of the poor state HIS program is in? All I see is a guy who is comfortable and feels that he is “entitled” to his position.
Fact – with all the Head Coach turnover, even at his Alma Matter, has any school approached CMR? Answer NO; his own Alma Matter doesn’t even want him. What a joke that Colorado was interested in CMR. Dan Hawkins beat UGA with half the talent UGA had, outcoached Richt and was still fired. For somebody to say that Colorado was interested in CMR is a joke. Colorado wants to improve their program not take it backwards. That whole story was disinformation intended to prop up CMR.
Fact – no other school wants any of our assistants. Since Van Gorder was hired away how many assistants have been hired away? Answer NONE. Searels is suppose to be an O-line genius, Gardner is suppose to be a great recruiter, Bobo is a great OC and QB coach etc. That no other school wants any of our assistants speaks volumes about the state of our staff. Look how many assistants have been hired away from Saban, Bowden, Meyer, Spurrier, Fulmer, Mack Brown etc. Great coaching staffs/programs are mills for up and coming coaches.
Fact – Richt is unable to attract the top, up and coming talent. Just look at our search for a DC. Bud Foster, Kirby Smart and others would not come to UGA. All we were able to land was an unkown NFL position coach who is a disaster. Granthem is worse than Martinez, we took two steps backwards with him. If Richt had been able to hire Smart and/or Foster is there any doubt our defense would have been better? Working for CMR is a career killer; Saban said has much last year when he gave public advice to Smart. Van Gorder was smart enough to know he needed to part ways with CMR and where is Van Gorder now?
The next head coach at UGA has a tall task ahead of him. Not only will he have to completely change the culture and win back the fan base but the next head coach will not have any talent to work with. CMR is already out of talent and he can’t recruit with the likes of Alabama, Auburn, S Carolina, Florida etc. The next head coach will be a in a worse situation than what Donnan had to deal with. The next head coach will need 4-5 years to return UGA to the top-tier of the SEC.

Richt is a delusional clown. Now all of a sudden he’s going to become an expert?? Expert on what, how to reduce prison sentences and suspensions?
On the field, he is not expert and about a million miles away from cutting edge. The most daring play we had all year was a screen pass. No end arounds, no reverses, no fake punts, no onside kicks, no nothing. Look at the trick plays in Auburn’s arsenal. They killed us with the Statue of Liberty play, caught us asleep with the onside kick, burned us on the end arounds.
I would call Auburn cutting edge, we are as plain Jane as they come. Richt has truly lost it.

I can’t get over the fact that we had roughly 33 days between last game and bowl game (finals, xmas break) to prepare for CFU….Obviously their coaches, players, and program took it upon themselves to showcase their football team and it’s obvious by our performance the game didn’t mean anything to us. Unfortunately for us, recruits are beginning to see this….I remember afew years back Coach Dye asked the question if we were “man enough” to play with Alabama…From our performance at the Liberty Bowl, it’s obvious the question has been answered about our players and coaches….HELL NO.

This season has left me angry just like everyone else. But, if you recall the 2007 season, Richt came out of his shell in a big way. He started fist pumping and showing a lot emotion, at least for Richt. 2008 came, and he went back into his cocoon. I think the players would feed off of outward emotion from him because they obviously rarely see it. The problem from my perspective is that we are WAY too predictable of an offense. I could care less that we put big scores on the board during the last 6 games of the regular season. Its the play calling that haunts me. I can almost ALWAYS tell what we are going to do next, and it bugs the hell out of me. Then, in the bowl, going for the field goal on the first possession told the offense that CMR had NO confidence in them, and it haunted him the rest of the game. Its time for Richt to leave the cocoon and gamble a bit. If he refuses, stays mundane and can’t keep the in-state talent in-state…Richt be gone!

I am pretty tired of hearing CMR talk about how long it takes for the kids to learn a system…how he doesnt want to put to much on the young guys plates… accepts that it takes a half a season or more to learn a system…These comments or excuses just kill me. I honestly dont think the his staff gives the kids enough credit and/or he lacks confidence in them.
Face it, UGA’s playbook seems pretty simple as you sit and watch a game. We are so predictable… other staffs know what is comming at them. I have watched several other bowl games this week and am amazed at how some of these teams complex offenses make UGA’s look like something from my highschool teams back in the 1970’s. Look at Stanford, shifting not only backs but O-linemen to confuse the opposing defenses. Arky, OSU, UCF, UF, LSU, Bama, TCU, Oregon, go on and on and on…. These offenses appear to have 4x to 5x the complexity as UGA’s predictable offense.
I think strength and conditioning and recruiting good atheletes are both obviously important but there are so many teams out there who are not as stocked as we are who out coach or have schemes that keep more atheletic teams off balance and WIN.
Mark, you have got to give our student atheletes more credit and confidence or if it is accountability to be able to learn and execute more. We need to shake the bland, predictable, offense to give the kids a chance. I really believe this.
I’m no coach… just love to watch football and I am pretty simple thinking, but I can sit and watch a UGA offense for 4 quarters and guess that they might run 12 different plays over the course of a game.
I sit and watch these other bowl games and I am feeling like many or most of these teams have playbooks that are so much more diverse and keep defenses guessing… They seem to run 40+ different plays.
I am sure I am exagerating, but it honestly seem to me like night and day as a casual interested observer. My honest perception. Am I wrong?
Are other kids just smarter than ours???????
Or do we just not expect as much from ours???
Gotta open it up on both sides of the ball. All top teams are strong and atheletic… you cant have the opposing team predicting 90% of the time what you are going to run, no matter how atheletic and strong you are.

And for all of those who say “Who out there are we going to get?”
Well, Florida just hired Muschamp, we could have gotten him. You think Florida knows a thing or 2 about winning football games? 2 out of the last 4 National Championships, I think so.
Kirby Smart is out there, we could get him. He’s going to land a head coaching job, just wait and see.
We could have gotten Randy Edsall as someone pointed out, instead Maryland picks him up. You think he would have picked Maryland over Georgia?? I don’t think so.
While we sit still and do nothing, other schools are making moves and snatching up all the good coaches. Next year we be right back in this same boat, only behind the other schools who had enough sense to make the change.

I agree that Grantham has been a disaster. Everybody keeps defending him by saying that he didn’t have the right personnel, but shouldn’t a good coach be able to adjust his defense to fit the personnel on hand? The defense improved some, but that sure isn’t saying a lot considering who Grantham replaced, and how much money he got to do it.
On the other hand, it’s hard to work with guys who aren’t motivated and are phsically weak, so maybe I am judging too harshly.
Oh, and for the money Richt is paid, he should already know more about football than everyone except a handful of coaches in the country. He was suppossed to be an “expert” when he was hired.

And I dont buy blaming assistant coaches for our bland basic scheme. Does an OC decide what the complexity of the playbook is giong to be?
Does the HC not determine the basic scheme or have input on a game plan and areas we target?
Does the OC decide how much of the playbook is feed to the players?
If so, tdoes the HC not have the responsibility to step in when thing are not going well and make adjustments.
Give em some rope on the playing field coach. come out with an O in 2011 that is not so predictable and keeps D’s off guard and gives our kids a chance to win. ALL OUT!!!
How much of the playbook should you expect every player on the team to know beginning game 1???? Absolutly, positively, no exception or excuses…. EVERY F’in BIT OF IT. PERIOD. Otherwise, when our backs are against the wall, we have nothing to fall back on and are likely to loose.

For all the idiots who think we should fire Richt immediately,
We can’t now. That time has passed. There is no one available right now who is as capable a coach as Richt. If we wanted to fire him, we needed to do it in early December so we could have choices as to who we wanted. We are also too late in the recruiting season. Our class as it stands now would blow up, and none of the uncommitted prospects in Georgia would want to commit to a coach they don’t know. Florida could recover because Meyer resigned early enough for the new staff to make some headway before signing day. We wouldn’t have that luxury.
Also, don’t freak out about the two kids who committed elsewhere yesterday. You can’t win ‘em all. UGA’s class will be just fine.
My point is for everyone to calm down and see how next season goes. I am of the opinion that Richt will turn things around, but if there is no progress next season (9-10 wins), then he should be let go.

“SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — A political action committee out to change college football’s postseason system has filed a complaint with the IRS about a cruise hosted by Orange Bowl organizers for athletic directors and conference commissioners, along with their spouses.
The Playoff PAC reported the “Orange Bowl Summer Splash” to the IRS, complaining that the “all-inclusive, three-night, four-day complimentary getaway” to the Bahamas was a junket and could be impermissible under the bowl’s tax-exempt status as a charity.
Orange Bowl spokesman Larry Wahl told the Miami Herald the cruise was a business trip. An IRS spokesman declined to comment.”

I think it will be in the run game. Different blocking schemes and sets. Can not line your TB 8-9 yards deep and expect it to work. Have to split the backs and set them closer to the line of scrimmage. Think he plans to take the entire field…100 x 53…into the sets.
If they sign a smaller, lightning quick type RB [not necessarily a C. Thomas type]. Plus he will have the numbers at QB next year to be more aggressive in sets and calls [injury concerns during games and next games]. No doubt the QB play and development has been an issue the past two season with Stafford leaving. He has the QBs in fold now. And he has the D scheme he wants too. Think he runs a hybrid I and spread from here out.

What has become obvious, is that CR and AD Evans were at odds over the direction and control of the football program while CR has praised our new AD for backing the progam. It makes you wonder if Evans thought of himself as being in total control of the sports program and CR was second fiddle. It was easy to see there was friction between them. CR now has a AD who has granted his wish, go forth, coach and study football. As they say, be careful for what you wish, it might come true. CR now has to deliver the goods.

In Richt’s offense if you can’t pass block, you do not play as a running back so that ALMOST illiminates Crowell. Veterans on the OL sucked this year. Our RB’s for the most part sucked this year, and for all of his banter about how he know who the Georgia fans want to beat, Grantham, Belin and Laktosintolerant’s defense was very, very average. There’s really not much they need to change on the offense, defense, or special teams as in terms of play calling/schemes. The major thing is finding players that have heart, that want to play for Georgia, and that don’t lose their wits about them on the field. They’ve got to know their responsibilities and execute. Well, that last part lies with the players and the coaching staff. You’ve got to teach these young men responsibility and coach them up on technique. In the past we had numerous guys with heart on both sides of the ball, they truly loved playing for the Red and Black and they played SOUND football (technique wise).
This past year, I can only name a couple of guys that put forth effort, that played sound football, and that showed heart. As for the defense, it seemed like (as a whole) the players were afraid to pop someone in the mouth for fear of injuring themselves and they sure as hell couldn’t wrap anyone up when they were in position to do so. Defensively, backside containment was horrible. And on the playside, we did a horrible job of slow playing the run, maintaining outside containment, and turning everything toward our inside help (inside linebackers to be exact). And, with the exception of Boykin, our corners were brutalized on the outside physically. However, most of the fault lies with the outside linebackers as it is not a corners job to be the primary run stopper on the outside; their primary responsibility is pass first. The OLBs need to be the ones turning everything inside of them towards their help while maintaining good outside position. If an outside linebacker does his job correctly the majority of tackles made on the defense will come from the inside help flowing to the ball (inside linebackers to be exact). Corners and safeties will come up for extra run support once the ball carrier crosses the line of scrimmage. Do you hear that DBs? Only come up for run support once you know for sure that the running back/quarterback has crossed the line of scrimmage. We got burnt so many times when our DBs forgot to do their primary job…covering receivers down field. Many times our DBs got sucked in on play action passes allowing receivers to get behind them for easy scores.
The leading tacklers on your team should be your inside linebackers!!! Outside linebackers and down linemen should be creating the opportunities for your inside backers to make plays. The second leading tacklers should be your outside linebacker and strong safety. Good outside linebackers will not allow anyone outside of them (hence the name of your position, outside linebacker), they will take on a lead blocker with physical violence and get that blocker the hell off them to make a play if possible. BUT, no matter what, you maintain outside contain and turn the play back inside. You should not be relying on your corners to do this; there’s a reason why you play OLB…it’s for your strength and speed. Corners are not built like you and cannot take on a lead blocker with the same physical violence that you can. Corners are built for speed…you’re built for both speed and strength. Do your job. Boykin and Smith should not be primary run support on the outside unless the OLB is blitzing. Even then, if blitzing, the strong safety should essentially become the outside backer NOT a corner. It’s not that hard. I hope to God that the coaches are teaching this stuff. I would assume that Grantham being from the NFL is doing just that…of course when you assume, you make an A$$ out of you and me.

Bobo The playcaller is not the problem. Bobo the co-ordinator working with, or depending on, Seales as the running game co-ordinator is a problem. Something isn’t working there, despite Richt saying exactly what I expected him to say. And should say. But there is no way he is ignorant to the fact that the failure of our running game to be even marginally effective in the 4th quarter is why UGA lost the games. So where is that problem coming from? It’s not the only thing that kept them from being championship caliber, but its what kept them from playing on New Years day. Could be part of the “we are close” comment. How difficult it is to fix that is the question.

Well look folks, Richt is going to be with us at least one more year and so are his assistants so rather than spending more time calling for headsw to roll, how about something constructive: Here is what I think needs to be done to turn things around:
Lets start by teaching basic fundamentals hitting, tackling, blocking. It is painfully obvious that these kids don’t know how.
Start developing some toughness. That means intense downright brutal practices. The players should look forward to gameday because the other team can’t dish out as severe a punishment as the coachs during practice.
Learn how to hit an opponent so hard that he doesn’t even want to get up off the turf much less face you again on the line.
Take care of the fundamentals and the other pieces will fall into place.

C From Marietta, Friedgen from Maryland would come in to be UGA’s new OC and it would be a huge improvement. There is a lot of offensive genius available out there. Move Bobo back to QB coach — then Richt doesn’t have to worry about taking food out of the mouths of all those kids Bobo has (which I’m sure is Rict’s main concern in regard to Bobo).

Al, I would add to your list to put a huge emphasis on special teams — start playing Beamer ball. Special teams should have won the game for Arkamsas in the Sugar this year. Did anyone notice how long the opposing punter held the ball against the Dawgs this year? They did that because Georgia never put any pressure on the punter all year and it allowed their headhunters more time to cover the kick-off return man. You can pick up on these things if you study game film. Does Georgia have a special teams coach? Sure didn’t look like it this year.

just my opinion here, but did these guys who committed last night, even take an English course in HS? I was ashamed of the lack of grammar. A show put on by all thee 17 and 18 year old young men, and exploited by all of us ‘grown men” makes me wonder what happened to “COLLEGE athlete”. I guess people are correct; college football has turned into nothing more than a small stepping stone to the NFL. Look for the young men that want to bleed “red and black”, get their Diploma in 4-5 years and in the process become a great football player with the possibility of turning pro. Showboats work for themselves only and have no concept of team. just my thoughts

optimistic about next year?? let’s see… boise st and then south carolina. hmmm.. 0-2 to start. then coastal carolina and ole miss, so that get’s you even to 2-2. then miss st and tenn, so you’re 2-4. vandy and fla gets you to 3-5. new mexico st and auburn gets you to 4-6. kentucky and gt gets you a split so call it 5-7. best case you win 1 more and it is 6-6.
it is not too late to kick searles and bobo in the butt and tell that what you expect and you are going to call the shots and design the offensive game plans, and they better execute it properly.
it is not too late to announce a no tolerance policy “get arrested for anything and you are gone”.
it is not too late to set player development objectives for each and every player and a plan for them to get there. don’t do it/ make it… don’t expect to play.
it is not too late to announce that the performance in the off season and on the practice field will get you playing time regardless of how long you have been in the program.
or we can remain vague, have another break even year, they can all be sent packing, mcgarity can tear down 1/2 the stadium (ala gt so they can fill it going forward), and adams can proclaim that to enhance uga’s competitiveness he is pulling out of the sec and joining the ivy league so uga can really be the “harvard of the south” as he wants.
and lastly the remaining 27,000 fans can come to town on saturdays, find close in parking, sip cognac, eat cheese, and debate about whether it is civil to even keep score or are the players personal self image being damaged.

Vance Duly, I agree. Did you see the play selection Harbaugh and Stanford had available to them? There were so many plays that Luck had to wear half of the playbook on his wrist while the other half was on the center’s wrist. It certainly showed on their offense all year too.

Georgia is 8th on the ESPN rankings for the recruits they have coming in next year, how in the world can you honestly say that Richt doesn’t attract top level recruits?
You can sit there all you want and say you arent a fairweather fan, but anyone who says that Richt needs to go falls under that category. If you are a true fan and have always followed Georgia football then you should know that teams go through tough times. Just because you experienced success a few years ago, all of the sudden you expect success every year? Georgia has won one national championship, one!!
If you want to know the reason for a few bad years here it is….
The RECRUITS, not coach Richt are not what they were made out to be, and most of you will say that is on Richt. We have a freshman who will be great in the coming years,

Basically, he’s saying that we are going to continue to suck next year also. When you look this bad and you are too stupid to see the problem, you deserve everything you get. Open up the offense. Use the spread and no huddle so that defenses won’t have time to adjust and to keep them off balance. Use 4 or 5 WR sometimes to create mismatches, trust me somebody will be open. We need to be more creative instead of being so boring and predictable. Nobody changes their gameplan for UGA because it is the same boring crap every year.

Unimpressed. Should he be fired? Not right now. Should he upgrade his staff? You bet. Too many high school-level coaches on the staff. Since he is making no changes to the staff, I see no reason to expect more from the team’s results in 2011. Too many top-tier players leaving, and when the dust settles next November, I suspect Mark Richt will resign from Georgia. There just isn’t anything of substance coming from Richt OR McGarity. Mark Richt is not stupid. He knows what is at stake now. The honeymoon with UGA fans is over. I believe in Mark Rich will get this team back to the SEC championship caliber team we saw early in his career at UGA. Interesting story developing about Thomas Brown joining the S&C staff. The very little I have ever heard about the previous (and nothing is determined about the future of these guys yet) assistant in that area is that while they were great guys and true workout junkies, they joked around and ran the place like well, workout junkies hanging at the Gym. Very committed to the lifting and working out, they never actually followed the guys out to the practise field. I’d say it’s a great move to get some actual football guys involved in the S&C. Clearly there has been some disconnect between getting stronger and putting that into action for it’s intended purpose.

Believe me both of these coaches would have loved to have the h.c. job at uga. Its too late for muschamp but not too late for smart. I expect if smart is still at UA next year and uga fires m.r. smart will be our next h.c. if that happens will it be good for uga? Somebody explain to Richt that you can’t reinvent the wheel as far as football is concerned. What you can do is get bigger, stronger, become disciplined on & off the field, recruit more high character kids so the few less character kids have someone who’ll keep them in line. Become teachers/coaches (1st teach them the techniques they need & then coach them up to strive to be the best at their position) and no more being Mister Nice Guy on the sidelines, if a player jumps offsides, snatch his butt out of the game right then and there, stress self discipline & motivation, along with a little positive reinforcement.
And lastly, just because some recruiting service rates a kid 4 or 5 stars doesn’t mean he’s worth the effort, look into their eyes and see if there is anything in their other than a me first mentality. Thats the kinda kid that helps you win more often than not.

Sanks was stuffed at the goal line and time expired before it could get off another play.
“We had 16 seconds left,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “Strategically, it was the wrong thing to do. We could have run a play throwing it in the end zone or throwing it away. We could have gotten more plays.”
The first indication that Richt was going to make some bad decisions and the last time he admitted one.

Richt’s comments are incredible. Only after losing 12 games in two seasons does he decide he needs to “study football”, and “be on the cutting edge?”
And the best one of all, “make sure we’re doing the right things.”
6-7, and he’s pretty sure he and Bobo are doing the right things?
Rich’s chickens have come home to roost. All of this losing has turned off recruits. When the end of the Richt era comes, there will be nothing but a really good QB for the new coach to work with.

Coach Richt is ten years into the mission. Why oh why does it still take so long for him to “get it?” No matter what the problem or perceived problem may be with our Dawgs it appears to take Richt a season or two to “get it” and then finally implement a strategy for change. His immediate SEC competition acts and reacts far quicker than he. I for one would like to see that change.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Bill,
Since you never have an original thought perhaps you should read Loran Smith’s article in the Athens-Banner Herald comparing the current state of Georgia football to the state of Georgia football after losing to Miami of Ohio in the ‘74 Tangerine Bowl. Very similar situations. Lets hope the aftermath is similar.

Bill, Did Coach Richt say, verbatem, “relearn everything all over again” or were you paraphrasing. I know I don’t need to analogize that quote with many made by Yogi Berra for you. Many organizational management common errors have been committed; not the least severe of which is the hiring of friends. Division 1 Head Coaches are not necessarily required to be the best of business operators; but, a better command of the language would indicate a better overall intrinsic understanding of and ability to manage such a high level organization. People love to compare to Coach Saban; he exudes confidence and command of the situation surrounding him with his reapectable control of the language. I am sure Coach Richt must be intelligent; but, he just doesn’t come across that well expressing himself. That said, I sure hope he makes things work out and he deserves our support if he is to be the Head Coach.

Some fans say Mr.Richt deserves another chance because Vince Dooley was given 25 yrs to right the ship after Dooley had a bad season. Here’s the difference between Richt and Dooley.
Vince Dooley’s teams played with passion, emotion and with urgency every yr. His playcalling was rarely questionable. He ran the ball on 1st and 2nd down 95% of the time. Heck, he would even run on 4th downs because he had enough confident in his players to make plays. The only weakness that I saw with his team was the qb. His qbs were terrible. They couldn’t convert on 3rd downs even if their life depended on it. That’s the truth. The only qb he had that I know about who could convert on 3rd downs was Buck Belue. That’s it.
Vince Dooley believe in the run. He live by the run and died by the run. Strength against strength. “Stop Me If You Can”. That’s what I loved about Vince Dooley. Smash Mouth Football! One more thing. His players fed off his emotion.
Ray Goff was similar. He show alot of emotions and he stayed committed to the run. Like Vince Dooley, he had terrible qbs. I never question his playcalling but he just couldn’t get his team over the hump.
Mr.Richt is totally different. Ever since he became the coach at uga I always question his playcalling. He is terrible. He would call a passing play in a running situation and vise versa. The 1st few yrs at uga the man rarely ran the football.
The only bright spot in his 1st few yrs at uga was the defense. His defense got after it. I truely believe the defense fed off of Brian VanGorder emotions because he is a very emotional coach. Since his departure, the defense seems emotionless and inept. There’s no spunk in that defense.
The offense is still the same and the defense has become like Samson when he lost his strength after Delilah cut his off. VanGorder represent the hair. Without the hair(VanGorder) now teams can throw our big guys around like rag dolls.
Todd Grantham has made a difference on defense since he been there. That’s the only bright spot going into next season with the exception of Aaron Murray.
I believe the team will improve with a new hc. But they can’t do what they did after Vince Dooley retired and hire a running back coach(Goff) to replace Mr.Richt. We need a proven hc who will show emotion on the sideline and has had success as a hc, oc or dc.
The Gators did the same thing when Spurrier resigned and hired their unsuccessful former assist coach Ron Zook. When Spurrier demoted Ron Zook in 93, you would think their sports director would have enough sense not to hire Ron Zook. Well at least they learn their lesson and hired a much higher profile coach(Urban Meyer) to replace Zook. The rest is history.
That’ what the dawgs need to do.

I LOVE reading the comments. Most of you guys are clueless about coaching. What is good coaching? Great broad statments. What coaching x and o would you implement. Please dont say “needs to pass and run” I love those comments. Remember Donnan? You guys are spoiled. Besides Florida, Alabama, and Auburn, and LSU got a lot of luck playing for and winning National Championships. Look at Richt SEC Title years and 1 lose year, GA was close to playing for the NAtional Championship. Heck, no ga coach without a Walker has played for a championship or the hunt for one. Honestly, I like Richt, I think he is a good coach and has a good staff. Should GA hire a new coach? Maybe, but that doesnt mean it will bring a championship. Also, I love the comment of dooley ran 95% of the time on first down. Heck, most people did than. He didnt have a qb or a system to throw the ball. Maybe Richt should have a “game face”I love what Bobby Knight said when a reporter asked about if a player needs to have a game face on. Knight said what the heck is a game face and basically what does that matter. I understand the frustration but some of you do not understand coaching and leading a football. I am not talking about “daddy ball”

newnan dawg totaly agree, vangorder should and possible could be the next head coach keeping gratham as “D” cord:, lissen richt heart is not into his job and it takes a 24/7 coaching effort.
if after 10 years richt is trying to re-vamp and re-tool, sorry its to late freddo, its time for the boat ride on the lake(god-father)
with coachs switching jobs it will be hard to keep a solid coaching staff any where
all sec schools go through it, case in point
1. mac brown at texas lost “D” corr: to fla
2. miss st on a solid up swing just lost a fine top shelf “D” corr:
3. whos next?????????????
PS: bottom line———-gratham could leave!!!!!!!! changes always aquire and trust me SLICK stan at bammer will lose his coaching staff soon, things will always change, ga. will be back with or without spoiled retarded recruits like BRAY and his corn fed family headed to “hick” ville usa AKA allburn war hoggs!!!
wasn’t there a time when black players could not wait to flee the rascist alabammer, GO FIGURE, what has change???? nothing but our high schools dont teach kids about that RED neck state, but at least its a place to dump our trash like bray who i never understood one word out of his mouth, hahahahahah

(Dooley) “His playcalling was rarely questionable.”
What planet are you from? Dooley’s playcalling being questioned was the model on which modern day fans complaining is built on. Not saying they were right or wrong, but it was certainly the norm.
And I can name quite a few years that passion and urgency could certainly be questioned just as much as anyone could this past year. Not sure how fair that was (then or now), but thats a purely subjective measure, and no real facts in either case to say that was a factor one way or the other. Some of Dooley’s team were manhandled and wilted late just the same as this last edition. So IF they always had passion and urgency, they were just very poorly selected/prepared by him.
Bottom line, Dooley was never held to the standards that Richt is. But he existed in that climate and Richt exist in this one. The comparison doesn’t really matter.

Coach Richt,
Even though you have the fourth best winning % among active coaches and have given us 6 10 win season and a #2 and #3 ranking. You have recruited players like AJ Green, Matt Stafford, Knowshon Moreno. It is unfortunate that you have joined a disgraceful group of coaches that have had back to back disappointing seasons. These coaches obviously have no clue what they doing.
Here are the list of disgraceful coaches that CMR has joined by having back to back disappointing years.
1) Bear Bryant
Nick Saban
2) Vince Lombardi
3) Vince Dooley
4) Steve Spurrier
5) Joe Paterno
6) Bobby Bowden
7) Pete Carroll
What a bunch of losers these coaches are to even dare to have bad seasons.

I read comments that I disagree with all the time but you will never read a comment by me that is derogatory towards another.
Like I said, Vince Dooley teams played with emotion, passion and urgency rather he had a bad season or a good season. I never question the man’s playcalling. He live by the run he died by the run and that’s why I like Vince. His teams play hard nose football day in and day out. If you question his playcalling and the way he coach plz explain why? I would like to know. I explain why I don’t like Mr.Richt’s playcalling so plz explain why you didn’t like Vince Dooley playcalling.
Donnan had a losing season after his 1st yr at uga. After that yr the man had a winning season and won all of his bowl games. If they had given him 10 years like they gave Mr.Richt I believe the dawgs would have won a nc with DJ Shockey. But we will never know because they didn’t give him the time to complete the mission. At least he didn’t have another losing season after his 1st yr. Give the man credit.
I hope Mr.Richt have success from this yr forward but I have zero confident in the man.

nope as i agree with coach richt 100 percent. just have to get his players to play with a little more fire. i too beleive uga is very close as do most of the UGA fans that know football. mark richt will be at uga for another 10 years or so or whenever he retires. he was close to haveing a shot a the NC 2 or 3 times in 10 years. not bad at all. just sit back and let the man do his job. he knows what he is doing.

he can assist because bobo actually played the qb position at the college level and ran a similar offense. his work speaks for itself. his offense and qb put up great numbers and are very balanced which is very hard to coach and succeed at. NFL scouts are all impresed with his qb coming out of college and praise how well they are prepared for the pros and how fast they pick up the NFL type of play from the qb position and running backs. the guys ar doing a great job at teaching the game of football..keep it up

BUBBA GUMP you must be very young or not much of a Dawg fan, Bobo handed off to Robert Edwards and he set many records for passing efficiency while he was a QB at UGA. He may still hold the record for most consecutive paases completed in a game. I remeber he beat Tech with a beautiful fade to a receiver in the corner of the end zone . He was not the best QB UGA has ever had but he was definetly a good QB and seems to really know how to work with young QB’s.

We’re going to get draw plays and screens on 2nd and 3rd and long. We’ll get a play action pass on first or second down, as long as its 10 yards to go or less. We like to surprise our opponents by throwing to our fullback in the flat. We’ll get crazy by throwing a tight end screen. They haven’t seen us do that before.
We’re going to run the clock out if we have the ball and are receiving in the 2nd half, or if we are on our own side of the field with anything less than 1:30 left. We might run a draw or throw a screen pass and see if we break one into FG range, but if we don’t we’ll just head to the locker room. It doesn’t matter if our kids play hard and rush to the line of scrimmage to get off another play. If there’s less than 30 seconds left, we’ll tell them to get off the field.
We’re going to drive 94 yards and kick a field goal to let our players know we have confidence in them. We’re going to stop trying to block punts, surprise the opponents with an onside kick, or faking a punt. We’re going to act like we’re playing in the NFL. In fact, let’s not have fun anymore either. We’re all business. Don’t put your heart into the game. Spend more time thinking about all the things that might go wrong if we take a chance. Let’s play smart.
We’re going to see strategic and tactical decisions that demoralize our players. They’re going to feel like they’re not there to have fun, but to be perfect on every play. We’ll see our inspiring QB try to calm down and throw the perfect pass. We’ll see him stop making motivating runs that spark a fire in the team and instead throw the ball out of bounds. It’ll be great. 2nd and 10 will turn into 3rd and 10, but he won’t get hurt and the game clock may not expire. We might make a field goal, but it’s the smart thing to do.
I love the Dawgs and Mark Richt, but there is a reason we’ve been losing games. It’s difficult to watch and must be heartbreaking to players when they’re abilities are being restricted by coaching decisions. Call the game like you can win and we will tear up the SEC. We have all the tools: players, coaches, fans, facilities, funds. Coach confidently and we won’t get the flat Bulldogs we’ve become accustomed to seeing. They will come out ready to play because they know their coaches believe in them.
GO DAWGS!
