Should anything less than 10 wins save Mark Richt’s job?

How many wins in 2011 should be enough to save Mark Richt's job? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

How many wins in 2011 should be enough to save Mark Richt's job? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

We all know Georgia needs to show marked improvement next season to save Mark Richt’s job.

The question is how much improvement will be enough?

If Georgia wins the SEC East, the fire-Richt talk will quiet down, no doubt about it. And such a turnaround from this year’s disappointing results certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Short of a trip to the SEC championship, though, what would be considered acceptable progress? What would constitute being back “on track” in the eyes of Greg McGarity and the bulk of the Bulldog Nation?

Ten wins? That’s generally considered a benchmark of a successful season these days and probably would satisfy most UGA supporters. Even nine wins might do it, depending in part, I think, on who Georgia beats. If wins over Florida and Georgia Tech are included in that number, it might be judged good enough to buy Richt more time.

But what if Georgia only wins eight games? That would be an improvement over this year, but would it be enough to say Richt had righted the ship? Eight wins wasn’t enough to save Jim Donnan; should it save Richt?

I’ve heard more than one fan who’s lost faith in Richt call it the “nightmare” scenario: He wins just enough games next year to keep his job but doesn’t really make enough changes to get the Dogs back into the SEC elite.

The program’s been drifting now for several seasons as others have passed us. Would keeping Richt after an eight- or nine-win season in 2011 be accepting more of the same and just be putting off the inevitable?

What do you think?

If we beat UF, UT, SC and Auburn, and one of the losses is a close one to Boise, a 9-win season could still be a “passing grade.” Problem with that is: Who are the losses to? Vandy? UK? If we lose to mediocre teams again this year, look out…

Yes, IF we win at least 9 games and beat UF for the first time in ages.

The automatic win against tech is a given.

I have been a Richt supporter, but this no excuse game with Central Florida burned all of his political capital. He can go right now as far as I am concerned!

I don’t care if he beats the Gators – but he needs to hit 10 wins again. Florida may have made a good hire, remains to be seen. But they are in a transition year & we have a BYE week ahead of time. It’s a great schedule – if Richt can’t win 10 of 12 with this schedule, he has to go. 10 wins is a MUST…end of story. Sorry…no exceptions.

In a game that did not matter, the election to go for the FG was to me a death blow.
This was the game to throw caution to the wind and run some trickeration.
Q- when was the last time we ran a fake FG ?
Q- when was the last time we blocked a punt?
Q- when was the last time we ran a fake punt?
you get the point….

I think if we win 8 or 9 but every game is close and hard-fought then it’ll show the changes. Some times attitude changes are what can save a coach.

They can only loose to Boise,Tn,Sc or Aub. and have 9 wins. Problem is if they loose to Boise and Sc we are in for another long season just like loosing to Sc. and Ark. If they loose to Fla they must win east and thats probably going to be a 9 or 10 win season.

I think 10 wins is a must for cmr, would also like to see more fire and emotion from him like the 2007 version of cmr the players reflect his laid back additude and play with no fire. I still thinkl Bobo is in over his head as oc he would be fine as qb coach but we need a true oc on the staff,

He should be FIRED today, not tomorrow, not next week, TODAY. There is no way a coach can live up to expectations like this. What is the difference in today and next year. It might hurt recruiting or it might help recruiting if you make the right hire. I have always been a Richt fan but if 10 wins next year (which isn’t going to happen) is what it takes to save his job then you might as well start over right now …….

Watching this team hew-haw around on the sidelines with no motivation, no fire, and no discipline is enough. The players appear to not care if they win or lose, and the staff isn’t motivating them. This program has become EXACTLY what FSU was when CMR/Bowden was there: a bunch of THUGS.

I have all the respect in the world for CMR, but something has to give. I hope he realizes that.

I have always been a Richt supporter, but I don’t think his heart is in it. His heart is where it should be, but not in the right place for a coach in the SEC. I will miss him. I will miss his character. I will miss his example, but if we don’t win at least 10, then it is time for him to go.

Wins would salvage his job, but there needs to be improvement beyond that, for sure. By the same token, wins don’t equate to how better things might be getting, particularly on defense. I would say he needs to have a winning season for sure… I need to look at the schedule to get a sense of how tough it might be before I can give you a number.

I trust that CMR will pray about the direction of our football program and get things turned around in the right direction. First step is to fire Birthing Hips for destroying the Heisman-hopeful career of Caleb King! Second step is to bring back ‘Soulja Boy’ on the PA system at start of 4th Quarter, will make all the difference in the world.

Trust in CMR (and pray about it)!

What??

Well, he should have been fired this year, but that apparently isn’t happening. I have also stated that a nightmare scenario for me is we do just well enough next year to keep him, putting off rebuilding for another season. I think 8 wins and he is gone. 10 wins he stays. 9 wins is maybe territory and will depend on who we beat but just as importantly how we play the games. If we are disciplined and show heart, I think people will be willing to accept 9 wins. I also think that another bad off season of embarrassing headlines could get Richt fired prior to the season.

Get Isaiah to come to Athens. Start him in the Boise game.
Get a running back to coach the running backs.
Lose the Fulmer Cup.
Turn practices into a cross between UCF and Modern Warfare Black Ops. Make the players glad it is gameday so they won’t get hit as hard.
Less commercials about Ford trucks and more concentration on the program.
A new dive for pool day, the half gainer is getting old.

Has to be at leaste 10 wins, look at the schedule! Apart from Boise, road games are Miss, UT, Vandy. Don’t play Ark, Bama, or LSU from west. Auburn losing 25 starters, Fla with completely new coaches with new system, other than Boise & Tech non-conf games are Coastal Carolina & NM State – not even close to Central Fla. We don’t have to be great to do well with this schedule, just solid and consistent!

Ten might do it for the few blind homers left. The die is cast with CEO MR in my book. I don’t think there’s any way they could possibly win 10. At the very least we will be dismantled on national TV by Boise State and UF. The time to fish or cut bait is this week. McGarity and/or Adams need to clean house to rid us of the malaise infection.

Edward

McGarity just wants the program to get going the right direction. 11 wins to 10 to 8, now to 6. Need the needle going the other way minimum 7 wins, if Florida is one of those. If Richt loses to Florida again, I’d say he needs 8 wins to save his job.

I think 9 wins may do it if you can beat the gators…lose again to them and i’m afraid he won’t get another chance…now lose to the gators and still win the SEC East, might save you, but the SEC East i still believe goes thru the gators, so i think you have to beat them…Win the East and lose to Tech, i could deal with that for at least one season…But guess what…we won’t be the ones making that decision…it will be our AD…thats why he gets the big bucks…go dawgs

Even with 10 wins if the two losses are Tech and Florida he is gone. 9 wins with another loss to Florida and he is gone. 8 wins and he is gone period. That is how I see it and how it should be. I think he deserves another year but enough will be enough. The Liberty Bowl loss ranks right up there with Dooley’s loss in Tangerine Bowl to Miami of Ohio. The good news is Dooley went back to the basics and put the Dawgs on road to MNC. I am 50/50 on if CMR can do it.

I think that anything less than the SEC Championship will not do. I don’t think that you can single out ANY game as one that we absolutely need to win..there are too many. There is no way that we can lose to Boise and have a good season. The Dawgs have what amounts to a home game in ATL and they need to show what they are made of. However, I don’t believe they will be allowed to show their true talent with Bobo calling the plays. That field goal over going for in on 4th was totally inexcusable.

Bill,
at my work, there are Auburn, Bama and Florida fans and we talk about every single detail about college football. all of those guys Sincerely say Richt should be fired, and they brought an interesting point the way we played in the liberty bowl indicate that Richt is trying to get fired, he is not even serious about about winning.
Georgia will not win 10 or 9 or 8 games next season, if there is 40 seconds until half time Georgia will take a knee others will try to score

Like to see CMR/Bobo correct some of 2010 mistakes:
*win some close games/beat some teams with a winning record
*start out strong instead of 1-4
*commit to run the ball 40x a game
*go with playmakers, stop rotating guys like B. Smith, Ealey, Charles, T King
*Average 42 points a game on offense like Auburn

Let’s face it, the SEC is now won with offense, so the entire focus needs to be on THAT side of the ball.

SEC championship game. Doesn’t necessarily have to win it but at least play in it. He’s 2-8 against Fl and if you can’t beat them with any consistency then you won’t compete for the SEC east consistently.

How bout just looking prepared, competent, and confident on a weekly basis. Even when we win it looks ugly.

Agree with Pensacola Dawg. No way we should be throwing in the towel against Boise (a team full of seniors). We have 8 months to prepare for this. That should be enough for an SEC team of this talent level playing what amounts to a home game, to beat Boise. They still don’t have our talent, it’s just they are better coached these days. That is the challenge for CMR and his staff. Show that they can do it. There are 2 strikes already in ‘high profile’ non-conf games: OK State & Colorado. It really is do or die.

Bill-

So true. Win the National Championship, and every game by at least 78 points or Richt gets fired. Also, hold each teams to 0 points. And kick 5 field goals a game without missing one, and average 55 yards a punt. Great minds think alike. We are dreamers.

Moose, you’re an idiot. We had Stafford, Moreno, MM, and AJ Green on the same offense 3 seasons ago (that’s 4 first rounders on the same O) and we didn’t even contend for the East. Auburn is the only team in the league that had success with a crappy D this year.

I’ve been one of his biggest supporters. But after the Liberty Bowl…I’m ready for an upgrade. Although, I’m old enough, I can remember those “Dump Dooley” bumperstickers, and he survived that, and won a NC several years later. Mark Richt is the man who will bring title #3 to Athens, the lack of support from our fanbase after this season is dissapointing. The same ones who praised him a couple years ago for having us ap#1 are now calling for his head after going 6-7 only once. UGA needs faithful loyal fans who stand behind our players and staff through thick and thin. CMR is so close to having his in state dream team all commit, we can win it all next year with Murray, Crowell, and others. Think back to UGA’s last 6/7 season….. It was 1979, the next year we won the title…. I hope CMR realizes that there are some fans who aren’t ready to sell him out yet.
