Should anything less than 10 wins save Mark Richt’s job?

How many wins in 2011 should be enough to save Mark Richt's job? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

How many wins in 2011 should be enough to save Mark Richt's job? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

We all know Georgia needs to show marked improvement next season to save Mark Richt’s job.

The question is how much improvement will be enough?

If Georgia wins the SEC East, the fire-Richt talk will quiet down, no doubt about it. And such a turnaround from this year’s disappointing results certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Short of a trip to the SEC championship, though, what would be considered acceptable progress? What would constitute being back “on track” in the eyes of Greg McGarity and the bulk of the Bulldog Nation?

Ten wins? That’s generally considered a benchmark of a successful season these days and probably would satisfy most UGA supporters. Even nine wins might do it, depending in part, I think, on who Georgia beats. If wins over Florida and Georgia Tech are included in that number, it might be judged good enough to buy Richt more time.

But what if Georgia only wins eight games? That would be an improvement over this year, but would it be enough to say Richt had righted the ship? Eight wins wasn’t enough to save Jim Donnan; should it save Richt?

I’ve heard more than one fan who’s lost faith in Richt call it the “nightmare” scenario: He wins just enough games next year to keep his job but doesn’t really make enough changes to get the Dogs back into the SEC elite.

The program’s been drifting now for several seasons as others have passed us. Would keeping Richt after an eight- or nine-win season in 2011 be accepting more of the same and just be putting off the inevitable?

What do you think?

This just in…..Vegas has released the official line on the Thug Dawg vs. Florida-Atlantic game….the odds are “Pick ‘Em”.

On a brighter note, we are the odds on favorite to defend our FULMER CUP championship!

David, keep drinking that kool-aid… you have lost your mind. Look at the 3 year death spiral UGA is in. Over 40 arrests in 3 years, this program is a train wreck. We are wasting our time and $ on this program

Someone please tell me why do we have to keep playing SC the 2nd week of the season all the d*mn time? That is getting old real fast. The BCS standings are all that matters right now and they don’t come out until late during the season. Switch up and play them later sometimes when it will probably mean something with the strength of schedule.

Richt needs to win 18 games this year or I’m not buying season tickets in 2012.

No. And 10 wins or more without a victory over UF shouldn’t save his job, either. If Richt simply can’t beat Florida more than once every 5-6 years then someone else should get a shot at doing so.

‘02 and ‘05 were flukes – Georgia won the East because they lost to average UF teams and Tennessee wasn’t anything special. But historically you can’t win the East conceding the Florida game.

Like Lord Bill, I expect perfection in all things, to expect less, is non sense. Each play must make the ESPN highlights. Each moment must be your work of art. Each game must be perfect. It can be done. If you shoot for the stars, and hit a cow, at least you got something.

18 of the last 21..you UGA fans should be used to getting your azzes whooped in Jacksonville….The definition of insanity is to keep trying the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results. Richt is what he is a good guy and a mediocre football coach

The key games are always UT, Florida, Auburn and Tech. Throw in South Carolina for 2011. If he wins 4 of these or more then keep him. If he wins 4 or more then more than likely UGA wins the East and will have a shot at 10 wins.

I am so sick and tired of excuses being made for CMR. At some point you have to quit talking about playing better and actually play better. We looked awful in the games we lost this year and terrible in the games we won. There is not another top 25 program in the country that would allow the coach to stay after the past few seasons we have had. COACH, thanks for the help with the kids in Zaire, but right now we need help with our football team. And you dont seem to know how to provide it.

If you take the square root of 98,333,4444,2222 and dive by 33333333 and then multiply by 3.456567789234566, that’s how many games Richt must win in 2011.

Thank you.

We shouldn’t be speculating on the number of wins, but rather digging in and saying we want a change at the top right now. Nothing I’ve seen suggests that we won’t be having this same conversation next year. I e-mailed my letter to McGarity last night. I suggest those that really understand the problem will do the same.
And yes, I was at the Sanford Stadium this season and I was at the Liberty Bowl last Friday to see a collection of young men (not a team) put forth a disgraceful effort. Outside of Kris Durham and maybe Justin Houston, they didn’t deserve to wear “G” s on their helmets.

I thought at first we should give him another chance just because how we treated Dooley after his losing seasons. Which there were way more than just one. Bt that is just not the way it seems to be these days. I think CMR is cappable of making changes eventhough its not what he would like too do. Don’t forget there are also politics envolved that we as the average person cannot see. If I was him I would just resign and be done with it. i do not see us getting better. Specifically if all those guys that are thinking about leaving, leave.

Better yet, before you throw out Richt’s record again, look at it like this

Richt AVG (After VanGorder)

9-4
11-2
10-3
8-5
6-7

44- 21
.677 WIN PCT
0 SEC East titles
0 SEC East Championships
1 BCS win against MIGHTY Hawaii
ALL RICHT RECRUITED PLAYERS

Where are the stats to argue about now?

It boggles my mind that most of y’all think that this loser can win at least 8 games, some as many as 10. What are you smoking? He’s taken talent and wasted/misused it. He has no control over the players off the field, and barely controls them on the field. He can’t communicate. He can’t use his offense correctly and apparently, is always just a player or so away from being really, really good. Really? How can a school like SC take less talent and do better? At least compete, for God’s sake. At least look like you want to be on the field and on the team. At least try. Sorry, he gets no more time as far as I’m concerned. He’s gotta go now. No more excuses, no more time.

apparently bob has some extra pitchers stashed away….please share them with the rest of your friends.

the truth is that when we get these new recruits, they will finally be able to execute the gameplan and we will be undefeated for the next 4 years. that’s the problem. we’ve been gettting players that don’t execute….and don’t use this “nick saban or urban meyer doesn’t have this problem,” excuse because we all know that CMR, CTG and CMB design the greatest gameplans in the history of modern college football…they just have to find players that will do what they say.

uh huh…..matt stafford and k.moreno and we can’t win the east….

wonder how many SEC titles ole Jim Dougnut would have won had he been allowed to stay….probably had the same record as the greatest coach and christian in the NCAA.

I ran Richt through all my charts, formulas, and figures. Going back to his start over 20 years ago at FSU, he has averaged 10.33 wins per season. At University of Georgia, it has dropped to 9.6 wins per season. Therefore, I’d project 9.9999 wins in 2011, you masy freely round up to 10.

I’m no expert but my ideas include:

1. NO player crimes and/or arrests
2. Win the games they are supposed to win, i.e. Vandy. Kentucky, Colorado, UCF, GA Tech etc
3. Cut injuries by 50% by better conditioning
4. Get a real defense coordinator along with recruiting defensive players
5. CMR to call plays assisted by Bobo
6. Win 10 games and become competitive for SEC East and conference championship
7. Be selected for BCS bowl

10 wins with FLA being one of them. If he’s smart, he’ll demote Bobo, bring in someboy like Friedgen to be OC, and fire Searels. Without some personnel changes, I don’t see how he’ll keep his job.
