Dogs’ bowl showing pretty much sums up the season: Lousy

A mediocre season came to a pathetic end for the Georgia Bulldogs Friday as a talent-loaded SEC offense that had prided itself on regularly scoring 30 or more points a game failed to even score a single touchdown against Central Florida of Conference USA.

Unlike most of the rest of the year, Aaron Murray, wearing gloves in a game for the first time this season, looked every bit the freshman in the Liberty Bowl, throwing two interceptions and nearly throwing two or three more picks.

An offensive line that had underperformed most of the season turned in one of its worst outings, especially in the second half.

And playcaller Mike Bobo made no sustained attempt to establish a running game, allowing the Knights to blanket the Dogs’ receivers for much of the day when they weren’t blitzing Murray as he searched in vain for an open man.

Of course, maybe Bobo was taking a cue from his boss, Mark Richt, who in the first quarter apparently had such little faith in his ground attack that on fourth and inches at the 2 yard line he elected to kick a field goal rather than go for the first down and potentially the touchdown.

That capped off the Dogs’ best drive of the day, which featured a pretty nice mix of run and pass. Unfortunately, most of the rest of the day Georgia rested its hopes mainly on the passing of Murray, who never looked comfortable. The Dogs did manage a decent drive to open the second half but it bogged down, resulting in another field goal.

And that was pretty much it offensively for the Bulldogs.

Most of the pre-game talk had centered on the two teams’ freshman phenom quarterbacks, but thanks to rusty-looking offenses and a pair of turnovers each, the game settled into a defensive struggle.

The Knights, however, persevered with their efforts to establish a running game and eventually were able to wear down a Georgia defense that occasionally was guilty of poor tackling (how many times did Bacarri Rambo dive into the dirt at opposing players’ feet?).

Overall, though, Todd Grantham’s defense played well enough to win.

It was the offense that stunk the place up. Yes, UCF has a pretty good defense, coming into the game ranked No. 18 in the country, but Georgia’s uninspired play made them look even more formidable.

The day was summed up pretty well by the drive the Dogs began with a little over 7 minutes left in the game. A good run by Washaun Ealey was negated by an completely unnecessary chop block on the other side of the field, and then on first and 25 Ealey was stuffed. Next play, the woeful line play allowed Murray to be sacked. And then on third and 32, Murray threw the ball out of bounds trying to hit A.J. Green, who probably was playing his last game as a Bulldog.

On that depressing note, I’ll open it up for discussion of the Dogs’ dismal showing in Memphis. I’ll be back Sunday with more thoughts on the game and where the Georgia program goes from here. Until then, I hope everyone has a safe New Year’s celebration.

Oh, one more thing: Aaron, lose the gloves.

How many of you got red panties in your stocking for Christmas?

UGA has a long way to go to get back to respectability. No team has any fear of playing UGA as they know they can out play them in the 4th quarter. Never thought I would see the day that UGA would be at the bottom of the SEC East just ahead of Vandy, but behind Kentucky. Watching Alabama, Florida and Miss State today is how UGA used to play, though not for a number of years now. No intensity from the players or coaches. CMR has to be held accountable. Maybe all the coaches should be paid for games won. At least the other SEC schools seem to get a lot more for their money.

When Washan’s run was negated by the chop block, were you surprised? After all, the chop block is the staple of the Georgia offensive line. Ben Jones is the master of it.

Georgia will never be respectable as long as Richt and his clan of coaches are on the sideline.

Never fear. Dr. Adams is here. I can bring UGA back to prosperity by changing from Division I to Division III. We already qualify since we don’t make any money on football anyway.

We will belong to the Great South Athletic Conference and will compete head-to-head against such powerhouses as Agnes Scott and Spellman.

Thanks UGA...

UGA doesn’t even know what it means to “Finish the Drill” anymore. Neither does CMR, who came up with that silly platitude that has inspired noone. They got drilled in a bowl game against UCF, a team they thought was inferior to them simply because of the conference in which they play. The real Bulldogs of the SEC played today and won – the Mississippi State Bulldogs – 52-14 against Michigan

The Gators won

Just, what does it mean to Finish the Drill? Is that the same thing as dancing to Soja Boy or stomping on the logo of the opposing team?

The look on O’leary’s face in the photo for this article says it all. He looks like he’s about to bust out laughing when he shook MR’s hand. I’m a dawgfan, but I can appreciate the moment there. It’s really going to be interesting to see how all this plays out. There was less chatter about coaches being canned back when Donnan was fired, so who knows. History says MR may be gone soon. The University doesn’t like a divided fan base.

D played good enough to win. O line was terrible. More of the same for 2011. Will get killed in the first game and go downhill from there. 500 season and another loss in a bottom tier bowl for two losing seasons in a row. UGA is just bad right now. The “top” recruiting classes have not done very much in Athens. Going to get worse before it gets better. CMR and others being paid way too much money for the results of the last three years.

Music City Dawg has it right- GRAB/ Borrow / or Steal Gruden as fast as you can . He’s a no nonsense coach with a fire in his belly who expects his players to be likewise. If his players execute and have pride they play, if not no matter who they are they sit. Remember how he stood up to Al Davis .

I’ve watched UGA football since Tarkenton was QB. This game should have been telecast in black and white since it was about that colorful. Even the total points scored were consistent with the 1950’s. In a half century, though, I’ve never seen UGA team members mourning on the sidelines while a win was still within grasp. An A.D. gone in disgrace and enough player arrests to fill a county jail. Examples like that don’t get set unless you have a deeply ingrained sense of entitlement, and that’s a hard attitude to break.

McGarity…Based on your comments you sir are an idiot. Watching real coaches COACH today makes me even angrier that we will have to put up with the same old aw shucks we tried hard and we are gonna fix this BS. Know how Alabama fixed things they hired Saban. Know how FL fixed things they hired Meyer and now Muschamp. Know how Miss St is in the process of fixing things they hired Mullen. YOU (Mr. McGarity) on the other hand sit around and say the boys sure put out alot effort and YOU are SATISFIED with that. CMR says that NO personell changes are forthcoming and YOU are SATISFIED with that. Mike Bobo against Charlie Weis who wins? Bobo against Mullen who wins? Bobo against Malzahn who wins?) Bobo against Saban who wins? Bobo against Spurrier who wins? Bobo against Peterson who wins? Bobo against Patterson who wins? Do you see the trend? And we are going to have to go into next year with the same expectations as being out schemed and outcoached on a weekly basis. I for one Mr. McGarity will not. I will not make anymore contributions to the Hartman Fund. I will never financially support my University (yes for all you haters I did go to GA) in any manner whatsover until changes are made with our football program. I am ashamed of my school for the first time in my life. I sir am DONE.

Regardless of CMR’s status next year, things will get worse before they get better. Recruiting quality, wins, and fan respect will decline for a few years more until the program works through this mess. This happens at all schools eventually, and now it’s happening to us and CMR. The only real question is when will the administration make the hard decisions. You know, kinda like dealing with the Federal deficit.
