If the quarterback could get the ball anywhere near A.J. Green, he usually came down with it. (Associated Press)
A.J. Green tweets he isn’t gone yet, no matter what Channel 2 reports, but you’re not likely to find many observers of the Georgia football program who expect A.J. to be putting on the red No. 8 jersey next season.
He’s already considered a lock to go in the first round of the NFL draft, so about all he could do by returning for another season in Athens is run the risk of an injury that could endanger his pro career.
Oh, I’d love it if he came back. And if he shocks the world and does that, he’ll instantly elevate himself to the highest level of Bulldog Nation folk hero status. But I don’t expect it to happen.
So, assuming Green is gone after this season, what will be his place in Georgia football history? As was the case with Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno, he won’t have helped bring a championship to UGA before leaving early. And generally it’s the players who at least bring home an SEC championship trophy who are the most beloved among fans.
However, there’s one big difference when it comes to Green. Stafford and Moreno were top-notch players, but they weren’t the best I’d ever seen play at their positions for UGA. Stafford had the biggest arm but never completely mastered the mental side of the quarterback position and wasn’t the team leader he could have been. Moreno was a fantastically talented back, but he was no Herschel Walker.

Merry Christmas, Bulldog Nation! (Danbury Mint)
But A.J. is, hands down, the best receiver I’ve ever seen play for Georgia.
He might not have lived up to his full potential, due to injuries and the missed games caused by his stupidity in the jersey-selling affair, but those circus catches, his running after the catch and, most importantly, his ability to go up high in double or triple coverage and still snag the ball in a clutch situation are unequaled.
It’s been a pleasure to watch him play. If I could get my Christmas wish for the Bulldogs, he’d return for his senior season. I don’t think we’ll be that lucky, though.
Speaking of Christmas wishes, here’s hoping you and yours have a safe and enjoyable holiday and all of you come back next week for some bowl talk.

AJ doesn’t have any place in Georgia’s football lore . So the answer is none. You have to be a leader and role model for that and AJ failed at both.

I’d give anything to see AJ stay for another season… with another year of maturity for Murray, just think what those two could do! Despite all the naysayers (especially the armchair coaches on these blogs), I think UGA will have a good team next year. Murray will be a year older and wiser (he’s gonna be agreat QB), Grantham will have had a year to solidify his D, our special teams are solid. I’d like a better running game, so if Santa is in the mood for giving, I’ll take a couple of good recruits in that area along with keeping AJ

Dawgonit I did have the pleasure of watching the GREAT HERSHEL WALKER.He was truly great in every aspect of his game.I reminisce about him all the time.AJ is the best receiver I have seen at UGA,but he is no Hershel Walker. My first UGA game was in 1966 and no one can touch AJ.It is only to bad he decided to sell his jersey,if not for this his status would surely be elevated. One more thing I remember 1979 also. We wound up 5-6,the cry was to fire Dooley. He stayed and the rest is history.Hopefully lightning does strike twice.

AJ is great, but I don’t see how he can pass on those NFL millions. It’s amazing the talent that has passed through Athens, without even an SEC championship game. It’s been chronic under-achieving and that’s really a shame. Some teams (Miss St) seem to do more, with less. The Dawgs seem to do less with more. Oh well. Let’s see what 2011 brings….

We need to be sure AJ knows we still have faith that he will stay for one more shot at college football legacy…spread the word for a 4th quarter AJ chant! We need to rock that stadium to make him realize the passion we once had as Dawgs fans and the passion we once again need! No more empty seats at kickoff for nationally televised games against major opponents…no more negativity at the coaching situation…and no more players in jail! Bring back the Sanford stadium people were once afraid to play in! And don’t forget… AJ one more year!!!

AJ is one of the top 5 players of all time at UGA. He is truly the most amazing talent I have ever seen catching a football. It’s not his fault that the defenses he played with stunk and didn’t win any championships. The same can be said for Moreno and Stafford. If Sweet Wilie Martinez doesn’t give up 50 points to UT in 2007 then we probably win the mythical national championship.

AJ is the latest of our five star recruits that was not “coached up” nor taught discipline, but will excell in the pros. I wish him well; however, it would have been great to see him play last season with Murray or Mett, not our Division 3 QB.

A.J. definitely has the title of “best Georgia receiver ever” locked up and probably will for years to come. However, given the jersey incident earlier this year, I don’t think there’s much he can do to be held forever dear by the fans apart from returning for his senior season and helping the Dawgs win an SEC championship.

I will look at A.J Green’s career @ UGA as what could have been…to be as talented as he is, UGA didn’t win anything major as a Dawg…but then again Football is a team sport, so its hard to pin it all on him…but his career will be remembered as “what could have been”.

To me he is the most talented WR UGA has ever had. Hines Ward is close, but I doubt anyone thought he would go on to a potential HOF NFL career.
However, Lindsay Scott probably will rank higher partly because of 2 catches: the 80 yard TD pass to open the Tech game and of course “Run, Lindsay, Run”. (Still waiting to hear from Larry if he scored or not). AJ made some spectacular catches, but none as big as those two. Did AJ ever have a game winning TD catch? (The LSU game should have been…)

“he is the next jerry rice, he has attitude and work ethic, plus more skills than randy moss.”
I’m going to break that statement down..
“he is the next jerry rice” – We’ll see about that. AJ’s body will have to hold up for a lot of NFL years.
“he has attitude and work ethic” – I agree 100%. The people that try to bash AJ as a man because of the jersey thing are short sighted or trolls. AJ has been a class act at UGA and has exactly the kind of personality you want in a player.
“plus more skills than randy moss.” – Umm… sorry but I can’t agree with that. Just go to youtube and search for some Moss highlights. Say what you want about Moss’s attitude, his physical ability as a WR is unmatched. Some of the catches he’s made… I’ve never seen anything like it. Now can AJ develope into, match, and maybe even surpass Moss? Yes I think he can. But I wont agree with that statement at this time in AJ’s football career.
@AJ – Whatever you decide, this Dawg supports you. Go AJ, Go Dawgs!

The problem I have with all this is that its part of a sour tasting larger picture. UGA could not win diddly squat with the:
(1) Best receiver in UGA history.
(2) Most talented quarterback in UGA history.
(3) 2nd best running back in UGA history
ALL IN THE SAME DAMN OFFENSE ! Say what you want about Stafford and his leadership and desire issues, but those fall on coaches. Coaches are supposed to be able to know how to get a guy like Stafford on the right track. But from a pure talent standpoint, he’s the best we ever had.
I love Richt &Co., but this is why I think next year is delaying the inevitable. Next year will be Mark Richts last year at Georgia. Mark it down.

I wish AJ the very best in the NFL. It’s hard to pass up the money he’ll be getting and risk injury for another year of college football. Another year would not raise his draft prospects – he is already right at the top. It looks like we’ll have a group of very good receivers next year but no great receiver. Crowell would be a great addition as a RB. I think his impact would be similar to Lattimore at South Carolina.

His place will be similar to Emmitt Smith’s at Florida. A great player who was at the wrong school at the wrong time. Emmitt was 0-3 against Georgia with zero championships, Green is 0-3 against Florida and has zero championships. Not his fault, that’s just the way it is. Everyone loves a winner.
Smith erased his college futility by being a key part of several Super Bowl winners. Green still has an opportunity to establish a championship legacy in the NFL.
Like Smith, Green was underserved by a mediocre coaching staff.

The thing about AJ isn’t whether he’s the best to play the position at UGA, that’s clear. It’s that he is so far better than whoever you list #2. I would expect A.J. to keep denying his leaving until after the bowl game. He knows that as soon as Christmas is over that the media attention gets all cranked up again once the Dawgs get to Memphis. He does not want a lot of hooey from Dawg fans, or the media next week about his leaving early, and or his jersey selling episode leading up to the bowl game. That way the only media he gets is positive bowl game type attention, and the raving from the idiot sports media pundits about how wonderful he is. Once the bowl game is over, he knows that there will be very little media attention given to UGA football, at least until the National Signing Day hoopla starts up. That will be when he quietly announces his leaving. Seems Stafford and Moreno did the same thing.

With breaking news of OSU players selling items IN 2009! why doesn’t the application of rules that fit AJ fit those 5 players? This is an outrage whereby we held AJ out until there was a ruling from NCAA only to learn that it extended to 4 games. The reason he was held out was because he would have been ineligible if he played and we would have to forfeit games in which he would have played.
Why don’t those same rules apply here? The players from OSU did the same rule breaking AT THE SAME TIME AS AJ! They should all be ruled ineligible and should forfeit all games that they played in this year. Just because they hid this during the time that AJ was being punished (and the team with him) is no reason to ignore and investigate later. They saw what happened to AJ and they (the players and the school) held off until season’s end. Makes no difference! They were guilty of the same act at the same time ; therefore, they are ineligible and there should be an outcry for forfeiture of all OSU games that they played in this year. It applied to ,Reggie Bush and AJ-why doesn’t it apply to OSU?
For their collective deception the games should be forfeited, OSU should not be eligible for the Sugar Bowl and Boise State should be switched to that BCS game. I don’t understand why there is no outcry against the plain favoritism afforded OSU and no further punishment meted out for covering it up. The players knew, the school had to know and told them to shut up until too late to punish them except in 2011. OSU and the NCAA have to be whistling thru the graveyard right now and figuring that the rest of football outside the Big10 is too timid to demand such action at this late date.
This should not be tolerated, both in the activity and the following subterfuge. The challenge to keep activities under the blanket and the school fess up later is a realistic application of “Do as I say, not as I do” that is infolding the NCAA Rules Committee as well? OUR NCAA RULES COMMITTEE? We, the member schools, are the teeth with Slive as our conference representative who should DEMAND action today.
This is the most outrageous “in your face” anti rules move that the Big10 ,OSU, Tressel and “Big Jim” have ever blandly sat down, looked in the camera with a straight face and tried to pull off.
Someone at ESPN will write (or already have written) an article asking the same questions here , but will decide to publish it when it is too late to switch teams.
Someone had better do something fast because right now there is an ineligible team about to play a BCS game.

On further reflection I must comment on Garrison Hearst. He should have won the Heisman. I consider Him to be the second best Dawg RB that I have ever seen, not Moreno. Hearst was as close to being a Herschel Clone as it was possible to be.

Georgia lost 3 games while Green sat out the early part of the season. Georgia lost 3 games after Green returned to the team.
Green is a gifted receiver. If I was the Falcons in the next draft I would take whomever was available from the trio of Green, Jeffery and Jones. All three suburb receivers. And I would trade up to get one of the three.

Unfortunately Green will not have much lore in Ga Bulldogs history. Like many other talented UGA players he was under utilized and did not get to play up to his potential. Look at Mathew Stafford. He did not even make the UGA team of the decade. Like Stafford, Moreno, and a list of others Green will hardly be mentioned in the years to come. Too many other players will overshadow these highly talented players who were victims of a bad scheme and poor coaching. Good luck in the NFL Green for it is there you will achieve stardom! Bill – I agree that AJ is the best wide receiver we’ve had in my 50+ years of following the Dawgs. His legacy: not so much, at least not yet. He simply has not led us anywhere significant – not necessarily his fault – but still true. IF he were to stay another year (which I don’t see happening) he could possibly do something great and become a much more significant player in UGA football history.

As an outsider looking in I would say he falls in line with Calvin Johnson for GT, minus the jersey scandal. Also like Calvin poor AJ will end up with a bottom tier team and look good while catching with very few wins.

I have a few words for AJ: Finish the Drill
First, no matter what you decide about next year, Finish the Drill like Fred Gibson and get your degree. It will serve you well when football is finished for you ( hopefully far into the future before that happens ).
Second, Finish the Drill by staying for your Senior year. You will instantly eliminate the negative parts of your “legacy” at UGA. If you leave early, your legacy will be more about what could have been rather than what was.
Lastly, do what is best for AJ. Money isn’t everything, but the amounts you are looking at are hard to ignore. Real Dawgs will be proud of you for what you have done on the field in the past and what you will do on the field in the future.

No place in Dawg lore for me. All I can see is he is the best receiver hands down I have ever seen play for the Dawgs.

AJ is the epitome of the Bulldogs over the last 4-5 years. Tremendous talent and potential defined by under achievement and disappointment.
AJ has missed a lot of playing time as he was hampered by injuries and suspensions; again a personification of the team and system he is in. If the worse thing we can say about his character is that he sold a jersey so he could have some spending money at the beach then AJ is an above average young man by today’s standards. AJ Green will be fine and we will be watching him on Sundays, in All-Pro Games, in the playoffs and most likely in Superbowls.
The most important commentary regarding AJ is to reflect on UGA, not AJ:
1.) Factor out the enticement of millions of dollars and ask the following question – why would AJ want to return to UGA? If AJ where to return for his senior year will he be a member of a cohesive, winning, up-and-coming program – a part of “something special?” Or, would AJ be spending another year in a dysfunctional system?
2.) MOST IMPORTANT. What does the current coaching staff do with the talent it gets????? It’s undeniable that AJ is a one-in-a-million athlete and the most talented receiver ever at UGA. But here we are talking about whether or not he is the greatest UGA receiver. Under a better system AJ ends his collegiate career as the greatest UGA, SEC and NCAA receiver. At worst a Heisman finalist. AJ Green is twice the talent and player of the last two Heisman winners.
If I am the next AJ Green why would I want to play of Richt, Bobo and company? Saban takes a slightly better than average running back and wins the Heisman Trophy and BCS Championship; its debateable if Ingram is even the best runningback at Alabama. Chiznik takes a player dismissed from UF and wins the Heisman Trophy and is playing for the BCS Championship.
The Truth
December 23rd, 2010
3:23 pm
Every since the NFL mandated college football players to play at least 3 seasons in College, I can only think of one UGA junior coming back without being redshirted (medical or otherwise). Fred Gibson. Every other UGA junior let the money persuade their decision and who can blame them. What argument can be legitimately made to persuade anybody for that matter to return for their senior season without the universal deal killer counteracting it. “What if I get hurt?”
If AJ stays for his senior season, he will be a Heisman candidate. He may even win it. There are so many positives for AJ next season that we will never get to see because just like Stafford, Moreno and the rest of the UGA players that left before AJ, it’s not about UGA anymore. Good luck in the NFL AJ.
That’s The Truth.

Richt and his staff have down absolutley nothing with the talent that plays on the Sanford green grass. You homers that love Richt have been given one more year to watch the sainted one pace the southern side of Sanford stadium and do absolutley nothing once again to bring UGA another SEC championship. My prediction for 2011 6 and 6 or 7 and 5.

Great player who never won anything….just like Stafford and Moreno. He is obviously the best reciever we’ve ever had, but he doesn’t even rank in the top 10 of greatest players because the teams he played on won aboslutely NOTHING. He has no one but Mark Richt to thank for that….hopefully we will only have one more year of preacher man.

To call Coach Bozo a second rate OC is to insult all the other ‘average” college OC’s. I have said before – this will be Bobo’s best coaching job ever, Bobo will get fired and never hired away. At best Bobo will go to a lower tier college after UGA. Most likely he will be a high school coach. Or, RIcht will reward Bobo’s failure with a $100,000+ non-working job in UGA atheletics. I had posted earlier that unless he decides that he has some ‘unfinished business’ at Georgia, he’s gone….to which somebody responded that he didn’t owe Georgia anything and therefor he had no ‘unfinished business’. Well Bill has just asked the question and 7576Dawg answered it – if he leaves now he’ll have no place in Georgia football lore…he’ll just be a footnote to a question of ‘what might have been.
He could’a been the ‘greatest of all time’….he could’a been a legend in the mold of Hershhh….well maybe not that big…but big. But as it is, he’ll just be another one ready to ‘cash in’ – by the way, I know Stafford and Mereno have a lot of money, but injuries will keep them from ever achieving greatness at that ‘next level’, and greed kept them from achieving greatness at this one.
A.J., is that what you want to be remembered for…a guy that passed through on the way to signing one big contract…or do you want to be ‘the greatest’?

There were a lot of things for the dawgs to celebrate this year. Let’s see…
1. A drunken, whoring athletic director.
2. Twelve players arrested.
3. A player suspended for violating NCAA rules.
4. Winning the Fulmer Cup for the most players arrested.
5. Winning the title of #1 party school (i.e., the most drunken student body in the USA).
6. A sleazy assistant coach who razzes opposing players, unethical coaching conduct in violation of NCAA rules.
7. A super sleazy head coach who thinks he’s a saint, but recruits thug wannabes, gangbangers, and illiterate morons.
8. A 6-6 record despite having a team full of 4- and 5-star recruits.
Really something to be proud of!
And sickening to decent people.

I think you are off base. Yet your grouse is familiar (and tired) among these blogs.
AJ was the focal point of the offense. You can’t throw the ball to him on EVERY play. As for not playing up to his potential…have you been watching another receiver this year? The guy has been a highlight reel for the longest time. His routes are solid, he is physical and atheletic. I’d love to see him stay at UGA another year but he won’t leave with wasted potential. You’re also dead wrong about AJ not being mentioned in the years to come. He is the best WR to ever suit up at UGA.
As for Stafford, he had excellent coaching and was universally praised by the NFL teams that interviewed him for being well prepared. Stafford had a tendency to rely on his arm too much and he bolted the pocket unnecessarily too many times his last year in Athens. I will say that he had 1-1/2 seasons of poor blocking but the lost potential was Stafford’s own doing.
He didn’t deserve to be on the All Decade team. David Green was better than Stafford by his sophmore year. Stafford was the more physically gifted QB but Green was better by a wide margin. Heck, there are probably 4-5 UGA quarterbacks who were better than Stafford.
Bad scheme? I guess half of the NFL runs a bad offensive scheme.

A.J. was a great college receiver, and without a doubt will be fantastic as a pro. Having said that, he really has no legacy at UGA as far as I’m concerned. Unless it’s a legacy of letting down his team-mates, coaches and fans. I think back to players such as Hines Ward, Champ Bailey and of course Hershel. Now these are the type players who left a true legacy at UGA. Not players who were really only auditioning for the NFL. Sorry A.J. fans out there, but that’s just the way it is.

When I put myself in his place, telling the absolute truth, I’d enter the NFL draft and never look back. When it’s about that kind of money there shouldn’t be any question. Good luck AJ whatever you decide to do. You sure made a lot of UGA fans happy a lot of times. And remember this — If you should have a career ending injury next year (HEAVEN FORBID) You’d be a lot better off if your name is on a multimillion dollar contract than you would be playing college ball.

Green will become like all the other jerks in college football who see dollar marks instead of a college education and a better future down the road. Sports announcers and sports writers encourage these athletes to turn pro and years down the road their agents end up with the majority of their monies. Loyalty to one’s university ended when the dollar became the motivating factor. There are few exceptions but very, very few. A. J. should be an exception but won’t.

While I respectfully agree that AJ is the most physically gifted player to have played receiver at Georgia, I beg to differ with most that he is the best receiver ever at Georgia. I perceive “best” to include many items.
Here is my incomplete list of bests criterion.
1) Statistical dominance over a career……….see David Greene, Herschel Walker, Terrence Edwards and Kevin Butler.
2) Durability ………….see Hines Ward, David Pollack, Herschel Walker, Terry Hoage
3) Minimum 5 games missed in a 3 year career. Many , many………
4) Game / season changing catches. See Lindsey Scott, Randy McMichael, Fred Gibson, Reggie Brown, AJ Green.
5) Earns Conference and NATIONAL awards……….AJ has failed to do this.
6) Championships………Run Lindsey, Go Fred, Go Reggie.
AJ has done many good things for us. I would love for him to build a legacy, but to do that he must return. good luck in the NFL. You are one of my favorites and you will do well at the next level, but at this point you are not “the best receiver ever” at Georgia.

Some like Mel Kipper predict Newton won’t make the 1st round.
Everybody knows if Luck turns pro he’s predicted as the #1 selection. Mallet right behind him. NFL is looking for Pro style QB’s not tuck it and run types. That spread O don’t work very well in the NFL where the linemen are as fast as the QB’s.

Just saw on another blog where 4 Tech players are not going bowling because of their grades. Now we’ll have to listen to how hard it is to pass and keep those grades up at Tech as opposed to any other school.
All 4 who were suspended were taking business management courses probably.
And yes Tech has those courses too.
Matter of fact It’s eaiser for an athelete to get into Tech now than at UGA.
I guess tomorrow we’ll have to read all about it.
Hats off to Tech AD for not covering for them, As is the case with the Auburn deal and Cecil passing around the offering plate, and now Ohio St. players that should be suspended are going to play in the Bowl and sit out 5 games next season, why is this?
Pryor and the others involved won’t be there next season, they’ll take the NFL route and Ohio St. won’t miss out on anything.
College football is BIG MONEY!! Truth be known, not many teams that don’t have some players being paid. Not many players standing on the sideline that don’t have diamonds stuck in their ear. the better the player, the bigger the diamond.
With some of the backgrounds that some of these players come from and some of the small towns they come from, do you think they bring those diamonds to college with them??

bagonhead….no, I’m not happy with a 6-6 season, but I’m even less happy with, so-called, Bulldog fans that seem to want to criticize at every turn…to belittle the program publicly in a way that only feeds doubt in the minds of recruits, other fans and, worse, the damned talk-show rabble-rousers. You see I don’t rely on the athletic performance of 18 and 19 year-olds to determine who I am, and feel the need to be openly critical of them when an oblong spheroid happens to bounce the wrong way…and as for Mr. Green, we didn’t waste his talent, if anything, he did. His stupid greed cost him his chance for greatness, and us a likely three more victories this season alone, and his fragile frame – he better put on some more muscle if he expects to hang around in the pros – cost him other games over his ‘career’.
Bottom line, I think our $3-million coach is exactly the right man for the job and will make even those ‘fans’ that seem to take any loss as a personal affront proud enough to take the bag off.
But if you want to skin-it for everybody to witness, go ahead, you’ve got plenty of company – but just don’t call yourself a ‘Dawg Fan’.

Richt will not turn the program around next year, dosn’t have the “right stuff”. There in lies the greater mystery. Was Richt ever that good? Green will be yet another extremely talented UGA player that didn’t get to reach his full potential while playing between the hedges. Unlike Stafford and Moreno who clearly just used UGA as their stepping stone to get to the NFL, I truly think Green loves UGA and the college game itself.
I’m not dare saying he’s jerking us around like LeBron did his Cleveland fans, but I do find it humorous that Green refuses to admit already that he is bolting for the pros. Maybe he thinks he’s being respectful to the fans and his teammates, but there are probably some poor slubs out there that think there is a chance that he will return because he does refuse to admit to the obvious.

Out of A.J.’s own mouth earlier in the season, “I do not fell that UGA fans got their money back in not seeing me play the full season!” And leaving ideas that he might be back, now he might not be back; I fell the same about him as I do any other person who wants to leave early, “haul ass!” If he can’t show respect to the fans and university that helped put him where he is today; I don’t want to see him play in a bowl game, let somebody play that going to be there for us next next year. Why reward him with a bowl start when he is helping to stall UGA’s return back into the SEC’s elite list.
If he doesn’t want to be there, cut him loose! He will be just like all other UGA players that think they are ready to go to the next level; apparently they did not read Fred Gibson’s article on leaving early 2 weeks ago! And while I’m on the subject, what is Boykin thinking, hell, he can’t play in the secondary in the SEC, but he thinks he can in the pro’s; everybody in the SEC knows that is a joke, another example that he can’t make it in the classroom, he want be an effective return man in the NFL either. And the offensive line, 2 suggesting they may leave early, both of which were the part of the biggest disappointing offensive lines in UGA history. The O-line at UGA has been a joke for the last 2 years “and they want to go pro?” I could sack on a QB with their play. How many holes did they develop in defensive lines this year? I’ll get off my soap box about leaving early; these guys need to take a deep look at their abilities and ego’s!

AJ is just another player in the long line of underachieving players in an underachieving football program. He has all the physical gifts any player could ask for, but shows none of the selfless leadership qualities necessary to be mentioned with the best players ever at UGA. David Greene and David Pollack had more leadership in their little finger than AJ has in his whole body. He’s no different to me than Stafford, Moreno, Andre Hastings, Musa Smith, etc., etc., ad-nauseum. He was a college player with all the potential in the world to be the best and win championships, but was too selfish to put the team above himself. This is evidenced by the violating of NCAA rules and the leaving school early without winning ANYTHING AT ALL. My message to AJ would be this: look at all the “great” UGA players who left a year early for the NFL. Where are they now? Where is Musa Smith? Where is Boss Bailey? Where is Odell Thurman? Where is Reshard Jones? Where is Rennie Curran? Reggie Brown? What has Moreno done in two years in the NFL? What about Stafford? I could go on and on, but I think I’ve made my point. These “great talents” failed to accomplish anything at UGA, and are now mere footnotes and by-standers in the NFL. I expect no different from AJ. I hope you enjoy playing for the Carolina Panthers or the 49ers. I say good riddance.

Green will be remembered only as a punk, a thug, a cheater, and a dropout.
He’ll last maybe a year or two in the NFL, then spend several years in prison. Afterward, say ten years from now, he’ll be flipping burgers and telling everyone how great he was. But no one will remember him by then.

If you guys want some good UGA football stories then I suggest you go to the Athens-Banner Herald website. Click on dogbytes and you will find a story about McGarity and his expectations for the program next season. A story about the progress of Michael Bennent and another about Jarvis Jones. I’m disappointed with the AJC and their coverage thus far about the local college football teams. With both teams coming into the bowl season we get almost zero coverage. Great job AJC!

He is the simple on the AJ legacy ………………… there is none beyond some exciting, acrobatic catches which is what he was supposed to do. He cost UGA the 09 LSU game with that dumb showboating after a fabulous TD grab. Great players act like they have been there.
Great players lead their team to exceptional events or games, like a SEC East title or SEC Championship or a East title and then, a great win vs a top 6U of so and so in the Cap One or the Sugar Bowl.
AJ? Did he play in the 09 Weedeater? Was he effective in the 09 OK State U game in Stillwater? Did he lead UGA to a win over Florida in 08, 09 or 2010? Did he win the 08 GT game? Did he even play in the 09 GT UGA game? Nope to all of these. He did one time block a FG vs Arizona State. I will give him that one game winner. What else did he do as a wide out, not a LB???
AJ has no legacy and within three years, his name will be forgotten.

Sec Champoinships…none. All Amercian Honors…none. A legacy would come back for his final year and help the TEAM! It’s not Green is any good, it’s UGA football always about one or two players.
BAMA had many shining stars when they won NC. Julio is not less talented than Green, but he was made one of pieces in a great team. At UGA, coaches select one or two players to shine. But BAMA even makes their mediocre QB an important piece.
That’s why BAMA wins NC, and UGA doesn’t.

I am an Auburn fan, but I like to think I can see great talent on any team. A.J. is one of those rare talents that come along very seldom. When a game starts you say I know everybody wants to stop him, and I can not believe that he can accomplish anything. However, at the end of the day you can say he did it. Herchel was the same running the football. As to determine where he stands as the greatest I would not dare make that estimation. However, when placed on a finger count you will not need the second hand. See him on Sunday. Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS.

“The ruling does not help Pryor, who is regarded by N.F.L. personnel evaluators as a project on and off the field.

You can’t pick a best receiver. I do know that AJ is an impact type player. He may have the strongest stiff arm that any UGA receiver has ever had. Somebody mentioned Hines Ward. UGA has never had a player that put the team first anymore than Hines Ward. He and Herschel are probably the best two all round football players that UGA has ever had. The greatest receiver in UGA history (not even arguable)! Look at how this season turned around once he started playing. Unfortunately, the injury in 09 & his idiotic decision in 10 will cost him with the “average” Georgia football fan. Also, don’t forget that the poor guy had to play with 3 different quarterbacks.
As for the comment by “waiting for fireworks” at 2:07 on 12/23 concerning Matt Stafford not making the UGA team of the decade: do you remember a guy named David Green?! When he left, he was the winningest QB in NCAA history! This is what I mean by the “average” Georgia football fan!

Dawg79 – Nice tabulation of the records. The one for Pat Hodgson against Miami in 1963 struck a chord. I agree that A J was the best receiver I’ve ever seen play ay UGA. However, we didn’t come close to winning a championship with him (or Stafford or Moreno) at UGA during his tenure. Thus, I think that he will be remembered as a great receiver, but not particularly fondly. I agree that Murray will be a great QB, but it appears that he has little to throw to. Other than Durham and Green, I didn’t see any receivers who could separate from a defensive back. Also, it appears that Richt (or somebody) has taken the fire out of Grantham. One thing I have to admire about Dooley was that he never took the fire out of Erk Russell. He was smart enough to leave Russell alone. Russell may have been the greatest coach we’ve ever had at UGA. Look at what he did at Georgia Southern.

2 Garrison
3 Hampton
4 Worley

These were men running the ball. Moreno, not quite.
AJ is not the best. Hines is. Hines didn’t catch the long balls, but he turned hitches and ten yard passes into fifty yard plays. Don’t disrespect older players because you respect flash more than substance.

AJ won’t be back next year, kids these days have no loyalty or commitment to the schools that put them in this position. Tebow was the rare exception, he felt like he owed Florida his final season. I hated Tebow’s guts but I thought he showed class for coming back his senior year.
If AJ had any class, he would come back next year to make up for the 4 game suspension. The NFL money will still be there after his senior year. If he has a great year next season, he may go even higher in the draft, who knows, possibly number 1.

Kids that blog here are just kids. They have no background on any players beyond 1995. They are children, yet to grow up and have a long reference point with nothing.
Now, if you can recall some UGA players and GT players dating all the way back to the early 60s, you have a voice here. Kim King of GT in like 66, 67, 68 had a fine receiver and right now, I cannot recall his name but he was a good one. Seivers? Help me here Jackets.
I recall UGA receivers like Reggie Brown who destroyed his knee on a kick off and worked very, very hard in rehab to come back. He did fairly well for UGA and moved on to the pros with the Eagles for a while. He seemingly had tons of character. He also COULD HAVE sold his jersey but he did not.
T Edwards, Brice Hunter, Andre Hastings and Jimmy Shirer ( yes, Shirer who caught a two pointer to defeat GT in 71, thrown by Andy Johnson. His catch with maybe 12 seconds left sealed or won that game, unlike AJ Green, who did cost UGA the 09 LSU game with his strutting. He was hurt in 09, so he missed another shot at GT. Typical AJ stuff.
There are many, many others that were superior to AJ Green like Lindsey Scott who won the Florida game with his hands and then his legs. AJ Green NEVER DEFEATED Florida. See? Could go on for days on this subject. AJ Green is acrobatic and has good hands but he is in no way the best to play for UGA ………………..no way. Charlie Whittemore was better, as one more example.

90% of all college football fans will ask “who is AJ Green?”
His place in UGA football lore may be more like Hines Ward’s. No one knew of Ward until he made his mark in the NFL because he played on bad teams. Same for Green.

So Bill (or anyone). How would the lock-out effect A.J. if he enters the draft?

If AJ had not been suspended I think this would have been a dramatically different season. I attribute 3 of the first 4 losses to his absence. I think he owes it to CMR and the Bulldog Nation to play another year. I don’t really expect that to happen. I think most people would approach it as purely a business decision. But if honor and loyalty were factored in AJ Green would play his senior year at UGA. This would have an amazing effect on the season and on recruiting as well.

I agree with you Bill. Hershel was the greatest. A.J. is great but would have to come back another year and light it up to be considered as one of the greatest like Hershel.

AJ will go down as the greatest receiver in UGA history. He shouldn’t have been suspended for any games, since Cam Newton and his dad took $200,000 and he gets to play in the bowl game, only for big money ratings.

AJ Green’s legacy is worse than Stafford or Moreno. Even though Stafford and Moreno were just mercenaries and are successful in the NFL, neither of them ever really put team first or provided any leadership. Green is like them but worse, because he sold out his teammates for thirty sheckels of gold so that he could upgrade his zirconium earrings to diamonds. His subsequent suspension resulted in the very worst overall team in the history of UGA football when arrests and stupidity are factored in to the equasion. I say good riddance. Don’t look back at Athens, AJ, and leave your Red and Black as you will never be a true blue Dawg. Oh… I forgot… You will be a great NFL gangsta player if those linebackers don’t saw your skinny torso in half.

I think he is gone but if he wants my respect he would have to stay another year. Say what you want but the tail spin of a poor season had him in the media news and missing the first four games that got the fabric unraveling to the Bulldog season. He showed a lack of character by selling his jersey and putting himself before the team. Sure he needed the money but so did the other Dawg players who did not sell theirs. I feel he will put himself before the team again and will take the money and run by going pro. Imho it is all about the money and character takes a backseat. But here is your chance A J, prove me wrong and show that you care more about uprighting the program and helping your teammates, coaches and the Dawg Nation.
