A former UGA player coaching the Gators ... who'da thunk it? (Associated Press)
Will Muschamp, huh? Like just about everyone else, I didn’t see that coming. It’ll be interesting to watch what having a former Dawg in charge in Gainesville does to the rivalry.
And if Muschamp manages to lure Kirby Smart away from Alabama for a lateral move as defensive coordinator, as rumors have him trying to do, what would that say to Mark Richt, who was unable to do the same with Smart last year? Think that would get Smart drummed out of the Georgia Lettermen’s Club?
It’ll be fun to see where Gus Malzahn winds up, too. And how long Dan Mullen remains at Mississippi State.
Meanwhile, what did you think of the UGA team of the decade they announced Saturday night? Do Ben Jones and Clint Boling from the underperforming current offensive line really belong on that list?
So there’s a lot to talk about and you can continue to do that here, even though I’m on vacation this week. The Blawg will return next week. Until then …

UGA is screwed as long as the wimpy regents, UGA President, and AD procrastinate in firing the most incompetent coach in the SEC, Mark Richt and his entire team of overpaid losers. The rest of the SEC continues to put distance between us and them while we mill around aimlessly.

Florida is weaker, they now have a guy with no head coaching experience.
Meyer won 2 National Championships in a short span, that kind of quality will not be there.
If Smart heads to Florida, even better, Alabama will nw be weaker too.
The news just keeps on getting better for Georgia fans.

Here’s my take of the coaching changes from a Bulldog fans perspective.
Willl Muschamp (Florida) – This is a big win for UGA. UM is one of the top 2 coaches in college football and perhaps the best recruiter and he’s being replaced by someone with no HC experience. I don’t think he will be a Ron Zook but he can only dream of being as good as UM.Big plus for dawgs.
Gus Malzahn (Auburn-Vandy) – This is also a big plus for UGA. Take Malzahn away from a team with talent that makes his offense dangerous and put him at Vandy. His schemes are great but he’ll never get a Cam Newton at Vandy to hurt the dawgs. Another big plus
Dan Mullen (Mississippi State)- staying put. this is a mixed bag for the dawgs. We have to play him next year but he hasn’t left for another job. If for some reason CMR is let go next year then he’s our man to be next coach at UGA. this is a plus also.
I would like to add that i’m a CMR fan and hopes he goes 14-0 and wins the NC next year. However, i’m also a realist that puts UGA first and think that you have to be held accountable for the job you produce. 3 subpar seasons in a row gets you fired at UGA

Mushchamp, Smart, and Bobo have always been close and have dreamed of coaching together. So Smart leaving to coach with his friend doesn’t surprise me.. plus he may get more freedom to actually “coach” the defense. Don’t be surprised if Bobo wants to join him, but as a Dawg fan, I hope he stays. With Gus M. probably leaving for Vandy, UGA could have a decent shot of having a good year next year. Smart wanted to come to UGA with Richt last year, but Saban talked him out of it. These three guys are close and would love the chance to coach together. Let’s hope Bobo stays…. regardless of what the idiotic fans say about him.
Who can blame Gus for wanting to leave Auburn too? His #1 player is leaving to go to the NFL and now he has a chance to doubling his salary? Look out for yourself and your future by padding the wallet… coaching life in the SEC doesn’t last long. Richt is the exception – thank goodness.

I feel sorry for Florida. $20 million, and Meyer told them to take the job and shove it. No other head coach would even interview for it.
So, they settled for a coach with no head coaching experience, coming off a 5-7 season.
Pity the Gators folks, it’s a tough time to be a Gator.

Its Mark Richt’s program to lose. The don’t pay me for making decisions but if they did and I were in CMR’s position after the year we just had…I’d be overhauling just about everything. There would be a come to Jesus meeting with Grantham, Bobo would go back to being QB coach (or gone), I’d either take over the reigns of OC myself (considering that is the talent that made him an HC) or realize that UGA deserves a top tier OC and go get one. Then I would recruit like it was life threatening. At least it would show some authority to the fans, instead of sending messages of complacency and stagnation. Those are the two words that best describe where our program is…complacent, and stagnant.

One problem with promoting a top assistant to HC is that you don’t get top-rank assistants to join the staff. (Case in point: when CMR came to UGA he served as his own OC and he hired Brian Van Gorder as DC.) Why would Kirby Smart leave Nick Saban’s staff take the same position under an unproven head coach? You could say the same about Malzahn or Halgorsen or any other top coordinator. They’re looking to move up, and taking a lateral to Florida is not an upgrade. In the end Muschamp will probably be his own DC and will hire somebody like Applewhite as OC.
By the way I haven’t heard anyone say it but I think the reason Florida couldn’t get a top-flight head coach is that Urban Meyer WON’T LEAVE. He’s going to have an office there, he’s obviously going to continue giving interviews and stating his opinion on everything, and he’s the exactly the type of jerk who’ll stick a shiv in Muschamp’s back if he ever decides he wants to be HC again. Nobody know this better than Dan Mullen, which I suspect is the reason Mullen is still in Starkville.

I’m loving all these changes! Was I disappointed to see Muschamp go to UF? Absolutely I was, but that mean Dan Mullen will still be available next year after Richt has another sub-par season that WE all know he will have. He has become complacent in his duties as HC of one of the most prestigious coaching jobs in college football and let the program fall apart. He has lost control of the players which means they do not respect him. They are an organization of thugs and hoodlums! Its pathetic the way the program has descended the last 5 years. YES 5 years? With the exception of 2007 which in my opinion was a fluke. He needs to go and after next year Dan Mullen will be the lead DAWG at UGA!! Remember he and McGarity know each other and I’m sure they’ve had many conversations already behind the scenes we just have to suffer through one more year of mediocre Richt football!!! GO DAWGS bring on Mullen!!!

The only UGA slant I can put on all these coaching moves is that CMR has been provided with a golden opportunity to take back the reigns not only in the Florida rivalry, but in the SEC as a whole. If he can’t get something done in 2011, it might just be time for Dan Mullen. I like Richt a lot. But I like Georgia winning a whole lot better.

UF AD Foley is rolling the dice on this one. He’s hired Muschamp for his potential.Potential is a funny thing –Muschamp may have already reached his full limit. The history of football, both on the college and pro level, is littered with coordinators (both O and D) who were fantastic at their coordinator’s job but later proved hapless as head coaches. Just an observation–Muschamp fits that DC profile: very aggressive, a screamer, emotional, a curser–all attributes of a good DC but not necessarily of a head coach. How will he handle fund raising, the alumni, boosters, the media, offensive players, offensive recruits? Does he have the sophistication and temperment to excel as a HC in the SEC. We’ll see. As asked above, will he be Muschamp or Muschump?

Believe it or not, Dawgs fans, but UGA is only about the 10-15th most attractive job in college football. UF is an objectively better job (unfortunately), so it would not be that big a deal if Smart moves laterally there. This is also why firing Richt is unlikely to yield a better coach. We are more likely to end up with a Zook than a Meyer.

Foley Folly: good point about great coordinators not necessarily being great HC’s. That is also why I am not excited (as some fans seem to be) about the prospect of firing Richt to hire Smart. Also, UGA has a zero percent chance of hiring Peterson, Patterson, or Harbaugh if Richt were to be fired. I may change my mind if we have another bad year next year, but right now Richt is definitely the best option UGA has and I suspect we may be pretty good next year in year two of the 34 if we can recruit or a train a legit NT.

I think this is a great move for Muschamp…I think FLA could have done better.
Is this a “bad hire”…no way to know until a few years down the road.
If Kirby Smart goes to FLA to work with Muschamp, it won’t be a surprise but for Kirby it could be a way to get out of Saban’s shadow. I guess as long as he is working under Nick Saban, he won’t get the full credit for the Bama’s defense and their success (nor should he btw)…
As a UGA fan I have mixed feelings seeing one former bulldog, possibly 2 (if Smart goes there) leading FLA…but it would be understandable.
It pains me to say this, but FLA is one of the top 5 premiere jobs in College Football right now.
I saw where know it all Barnhart already crowned FLA 2011 SEC East champs….I think that’s premature for sure.
Carolina will and should be favorites as long as they are healthy in all the key positions going into the 2011 season. (never thought I’d say that before).
I’d put FLA, GA, Tenn all behind South Carolina (in no particular order).
After SC there is no clear challenger for the SEC East 2011, someone is going to emerge from that group…yes it could be FLA but I wouldn’t be surprised if Tenn or UGA gives SC a run.

I have been a huge fan of Mark Richt, and it hurts me greatly to say this; but, he is slowly driving the once great Bulldog program into the ground. He seems clueless since Van Gorder left. He is a very good OC, but a mediocre head coach; and unfortunately, he has surrounded himself with mediocre assistants, with the exception of Van Gorder. Grantham is a joke, and a very expensive one at that. Hopefully, McGarity has him on a very short leash, and unless there is dramatic improvement next year, he and his staff are history.

Or do you need me to do the basic math for you?

I completely agree. UGA is not the top flight job in the SEC. Here are the records that matter for the last 30 years.
Since 1980, (30 years) UGA has 1 national title and 5 conference titles.
Since 1980 ALA has 2 national titles and 5 conference titles.
Since 1980 FLA has 3 national titles and 8 conference titles.
Since 1980 LSU has 2 national titles and 5 conference titles.
Since 1980 Tenn has 1 national titles and 5 conference titles.
Since 1980 AUB has 0 national titles and 5 conference titles. But AUB is in the title game this season.
In the last 30 years FLA, ALA and LSU have been the class of the Southeastern Conference.
Tenn & UGA, and maybe AUB this year, are the second tier of schools in the conference.
Of interest, the U of Miami has 5 national titles in the 30 year period.
Will they ever return to that form?

And they have 3 undefeated seasons.

LSU has only been relevant since 2003. UF was nothing before Spurrier arrived.
TN won the title in 1998.
The train wreck in Athens
December 13th, 2010

UGA man here, Class of 71 & 73. UGA football is a train wreck right now. It began with the Damon Evans crap and then the summer of fun and frivolity. Our two year record validates that too. No schools are calling our coaches because they are not top caliber …………..additional validation of the train wreck.
What U of F does with a K Smart or now W. Muschamp, has no real bearing on UGA. Our job is to assemble a team and win games. Now, come end of 2011 ……………and the Dogs are yet one more 7-5 or 6-6 team ……………………. or worse …………… we will get a new train.
For now ……………all we can do is to play ball in September 2011 vs Boise State and everyone else on the schedule ……………….. THAT will take care of everying ……………..one way or other. Every coach now on the UGA football team is being evaluated. THEY ALL KNOW …………….2011 is THE YEAR for them, one way or other.
Let see what they’ve got.
Go Dogs.

Some of you folks have shown concern for the Gators new head coach.
NOT TO WORRY, BUT THANKS FOR THE CONCERN
QB recruit Jeff Driskel spoke with Will Muschamp, still committed to Gators.
Muschamp made a strong impression on Driskel and his family in their phone call, and Driskel’s mother said he remains intent on joining the Gators.
“He’s fully committed,” Mary Driskel said. “He got his classes set up. He’s on his way Driskel (6-4, 230, 4.5 in the 40-yard dash) is rated the No. 1 quarterback prospect in America by Rvals.com and No. 2 by Scout.com. He was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Florida as a senior this season.

Muschamp would be insane to hire Bobo the clown as OC. The only coach that is clueless enough to think he’s doing an awesome job is Richt. Don’t you find it interesting that absolutely no school in the country at any level has shown any interest in Bobo or any of Mark Richt’s coaches?
Look at Mark Richt’s coaching tree, or lack there of. Outside of Van Gorder, none of his coaches have been pursued by other schools, and I’m not counting Calloway because he was UAB’s last choice, they only reason they went with him was because of Alabama politics preventing them from getting who they really wanted (Bama rules that system).

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer/Richt Cup, and on and on?
As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Deductive reasoning and bringing Mark Richt back for better results don’t coincide. Richt has had ten years to “get it right” and hasn’t. He couldn’t get it right with Donnan’s players(who made up his best teams yet-13 and 1)and couldn’t beat Florida. With a pre-season number one with Stafford, Mareno and Massaqoi, he couldn.t get it done(lost every single big game). Anybody, including McGarity, who thinks it will be different is stupid.

Uh – correct me if I’m wrong – but didn’t Richt come to UGA with no HC experience? He seems to have done alright – at least until recently. Muschamp will be fine. He inherits more talent (and tradition) than Richt did. It never ceases to amaze me how UGA fans always say

There are so many people spouting off at the mouth and do not understand what they are really talking about that it is sad. CMR has not forgotten how to coach in the past 4 or 5 years. He is still one of the top 10 coaches in the NCAA. Firing him is not going to solve the problems with the DAWGS. Why would Muschamp and Smart not come to coach the UGA last year? Why did CBVG really leave the program and what happened the year before CBVG left with President Adams?
President Adams got rid of CVD and took the athletic foundation. HE has been “stealing” money from athletics since(can we say indoor practice facility). He has established a committee that has final approval on admission for all athletes. How many great football players have we not been able to either get into school or could not even recruit because of this committee, not just because of grades either. Just look at how 1 great athlete changes a team (Cam Newton).
If you can not get those 1, 2 or 5 special players then you are not going to be a great team in the SEC. Now if you people really want to do something positive for the DAWGS and see them turn back into a winner then you really need to tell all those big money donors and everyone else you know to talk Deal into firing Adams or the program will never be great again.
All the rest of this talk is useless until this happens.

Here are the facts. Since 2001 Mark Richt has won 74.4% of his games. Florida has won 75.2% during the same time, and during Urban Myer’s tenure, Florida won more games and championships than any other major college program. No other school in the SEC has a better record than Mark Richt. He has averaged winning 9.6 wins a year since he came to Athens in 2001. Our record the last two years have been well below expectations, but before we throw Richt under the bus, look at our history since Vince Dooley retired before Mark Richt came to Georgia. Coach Richt has not forgotten how to coach nor lost his desire to win. When we were winning 10 plus games a year, his calm demeanor was viewed as an asset. Now that same calm demeanor is interpreted as a lack of passion and desire to win. Perhaps the most unfair criticism of Richt is that he is a good man. A win is a win and a loss is a loss, but to be fair, our losses to Colorado, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Florida were the result of a play or two not going our way. We were in those games with a legitimate chance to win up until the last minute or two of each game. I know that good teams make plays when they need to to win, and we didn’t, but it’s not like we are light years away from being a really good football team. I’m as big a dawg fan as anyone blogging here, I think Richt has earned the opportunity to turn things around next year. Based on our SEC schedule in 2011, we should win the east, and and I’ll be surprised if we don’t.

I just kind of wonder what would have happened had Richt made better hires in 2005. I understand the want for continuity and the benefits of a continuous staff, but his assistants especially defense, special teams and ancillary coaching positions haven’t been up to snuff whatsoever.
Here’s to hoping the new UGA staff members work out and they can get some of those dream team members.
Lakatos has had a big hand in those good UConn secondaries the last several years eventually once they bring in some new recruits who may actually listen to a coaching staff and play effectively in the scheme rather than looking to knock themselves out on a daily basis things may get better back there.
I think Belin has had a positive influence as well. It couldn’t get much worse under the last group really. I mean Willie and crew were Michigan bad.

When fans of other teams want you to keep your coach. It’s not a good sign is it?
I like Mark Richt, but they underachieved when they had really good talent in the last 5 years and when the talent eroded in the last two they fell apart at times.
To Richt’s credit, it’s fairly amazing they won 6 games this year after that start.
As far as recruiting, an elite back can come in and win a job right now, an elite WR… same difference and he gets to play with one of the best QB’s in the country for the next 3 years.
Defense has no where to go but up. So any incoming freshman or JUCO could make a name for themselves immediately.
That said, the issue still stands, fans of other teams want Richt to stay at Georgia and therein lies the problem. Yeah Richt has been as good as Georgia has ever had at times….. but those times were 5 years ago.

Why does everyone think that a coaching change will affect the way we play Florida? I hate to say it but it won’t. All Florida has to do is put on that orange and blue and we will tuck our tails between our legs and run for the wrong end zone. Heck, they don’t even need a coach to whip our butts! No one has ever decided they wanted to coach and then started as head man. Every head coach was at one time an assistant, and most were coordinators. This is WM’s time. Will he succeed? I hope not. He’s a Georgia man, but so was Roy Barnes, and so is Sonny Perdue. Not every Georgia man is someone I can pull for, and WM is not, either as long as he wears that awful ‘erinj and bloo’.
Richt HAS to come through next year, no excuses, or he needs to be replaced, it’s as simple as that. With the talent in this state, there is no reason to have so many subpar players, or good players being coached down, as we have seen here in Athens for the last three years.

Either Muschamp or Smart would be thrilled with the UF head coaching job, of course, but neither would take another coordinator position. And if given the choice between UF and UGA, they would both take the UF job….it is simply the better gig at present. But they won’t get that choice because CMR isn’t going anywhere.

The HS talent in Georgia is considerable, and 75-80% of them can’t even get into the North Ave Trade School, so there is no excuse for CMR to not put together great teams consistently. But make no mistake, Florida has several times the number of talented HS players every year. CMR has owned Tech in state, but we want more and that means tremendous improvement in regional and national performance.

If Richt doesn’t turn it around next year, bring in Dan Mullins. Everybody knows he was the mastermind behind Florida’s success. You know he has ties to our new AD and he has proven he can win with less talent at Miss St. than he would be able to get to come to Georgia.

UGA has 1 top 10 finish in the past 6 years. If you aren’t in the top 10 then you aren’t competing for conference titles and NC. They have underperformed with the talent they’ve been pulling in. Plain and simple. Look at the other “top” programs in the country and how many top 10 finishes they have over the past 6 years. They’ve underperfomed 5 of the last 6 seasons.

He’s owned us up until this year. Cam won’t be with us next year along with a lot of other players- I’m not so sure we won’t be a one hit wonder after this season. I don’t see the doggies gettting anyone better than Richt (you guys seem to be convinced that Mushchamp or Kirby Smart would suddenly be Saban clones, but that’s not given). Heck, if it weren’t for Gus and Cam, Chizik might not look so great. I think I would still take Richt- he’s beaten Saban when Saban was at both LSU and Bama.

With the coaching change at UF and USC predictably returning to form, there is no better time to seize the opportunity. The Dawgs must coach up these new recruits and make sure that Crowell is in the new class. With Murray now having game-day experience, he will only get better. To all you fans who keep exclaiming that ” Richt is going anywhere” need to read the writing on the wall. All head football coaches at major programs that are in good standing, there contracts never drop below four years because that makes a statement to incoming recruits that you will be here four more years. It also makes a buyout difficult and gives a coach more security. In case you haven’t noticed Richts deal is now at three years. After next season Richt’s deal will only have two years left on the contract, hence it is a manageable buyout.
Trust me Richt’s job is on the line. From what I hear he will be judged on three criteria. #1 Recruitng- This recruitng class is huge and Richt really needs to make headway with some of the big time Georgia talent. He doesn’t have to get them all but guys like crowell and drew are critical. #2- Player discipline- This probelm has to be fixed period. Double digit arrest next year will not reflect well on Richt. #3 Win- I don’t think there is a set number of games or demand to win an SEC title but the team must show that it is moving in the right direction. All three of these areas will be judged together to decide whether Richt gets a contract extension. If the team is struggling next year late in the season then Richt’s two year deal will be bought out and we will be getting a new coach. The end.

UGA as one of the most prestigous jobs in football. What a joke! Athens is a cow patty in the middle of nowhere. Sure GA has a ton of talent to recruit but how many can read at a fifth grade level? A mid-level SEC team with no tradition, the “battle hymn of the republic” for a fight song (In the SEC) and they have to play REAL football schools like UF, UT and Awburn-em every year. UGA is and always will be a middle of the road SEC job and program. Mark Richt has absolutely maxed out the UGA problem. You should be happy to be overrated every year. That will eventually come to an end.

Clint Boling and Ben Jones should NEVER be on any All-Decade Georgia team. They have been a part of 2 of the WEAKEST offensive lines I have ever seen at Georgia. Ben Jones could not clear 1 inch for Aaron Murray on 4th down early in Tech game when we were leading 14-7. It’s a disgrace how BAD we are up front. We also gave up key sacks in the critical early SEC losses to SC, Arkansas, and MSU. These guys would be back-ups on the top SEC teams. The Georgia team overall is as soft as our HC. We lack a strength and a will to be tough. We lost that attitude when BVG left. Teams knew UGA under BVG’s defense was a force to be reckoned with – we played with a mean streak and real toughness. No team in the SEC fears UGA anymore. Mark Richt has failed miserably the last 5 years. It’s simply unacceptable to EVER be 6-6 at UGA!!! The UGA administration and other CMR apologists have crippled our once PROUD program. CMR supporters and other pansy ass Georgia supporters who have no clue what it takes to win should ask themselves 1 question: Is this what we pay $3 million/yr for? To go to the f____ Liberty Bowl? It takes courage and guts to change – UGA lacks both right now and mediocrity and bad/embarrassing losses are the RESULT!

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same questions this time a year from now.
Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Meyer represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.
Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.

This ‘entitlement generation’ of Bulldog fans make me want to puke. You think that just because an 18 or 19 year-old drops a ball from time to time at a critical juncture, then that damn head coach must be at fault. Personally I’m damn glad Mark Richt is our coach and believe that he will have us back to the point that even the most knee-jerk, reactionary, hun-yuks, Johnny-come-lately, Dawg Fan will be begging for a spot back on the bandwagon – and sooner rather than later.
As for Muschamp and, perhaps, Smart, at Florida, the pressure’s on him. Florida fans are no different than most others – if their guy hails from one of their bitter rivals, then they’ll pull the trigger quickly to get rid of him is he doesn’t win big now. Particularly if he loses to Georgia next year, and maybe Tennessee and, again, to FSU…then you’ll see how quickly the ‘Fire Will’ sites will spring up…and Will will be wishing he was still ‘in waiting’ back in Austin.
