What does Urban Meyer’s departure mean for UGA?

Mark Richt probably won't miss his annual Jacksonville meetings with Urban Meyer, but is the Florida coach quitting really good for UGA? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

As word spread Wednesday afternoon of Urban Meyer’s resignation and speculation began centering around Dan Mullen heading the list of potential replacements, I noted on Twitter and Facebook that I was unsure whether this turn of events was good for UGA or not.

The feedback I got from fellow Bulldogs fans pretty much ran along the lines of this being possibly good for Mark Richt’s program in the short-run, but not good long-term.

Here’s the thinking: No matter who takes over at Florida, there’ll be at least a year of transition, even if it’s Mullen, who has only been gone from the program a couple of years and is considered by many to have been the genius behind Meyer’s phenomenal success there as well as at Bowling Green and Utah, where he also worked was Meyer’s key assistant. Some recruits might get jittery and if FSU doesn’t scoop ’em all up, the Dogs could benefit there.

And with Richt facing what appears to be a make-or-break season in 2011, any rebooting on the part of the Gators, however shortlived, tends to look like a good thing. Pair that with Gus Malzahn’s likely promotion to the head coaching ranks somewhere and Auburn, also likely to lose Cam Newton, looks like another rival returning to beatable status.

But as Meyer noted, “Florida will always be Florida,” and this is likely to be just a hiccup for the Gator program, particularly if Mullen is the new hire. I mean, the guy managed to win in Starkville. Imagine what he can do with all the resources and recruiting advantages he’ll have at the U of F.

Under Meyer, the Gators were likely to have continued slipping slightly since after last December’s brief retirement he obviously no longer had the fire in the belly, and without Mullen and Tim Tebow he looked much less like a coaching genius. As one fan noted, now with a new coach they get new energy, new optimism and no more Steve Addazio as O-ccordinator. So, going forward, Georgia fans might end up missing Meyer more than you’d think.

As for Mullen, you’ve got to figure he’d jump at the chance to coach at Florida. Why stay in Starkville when you can have possibly the best coaching job in America? Yes, expectations are very high in Gainesville, where as Steve Spurrier has noted 10 wins are probably no longer enough to satisfy the fan base. But Mullen seems like a pretty confident guy and isn’t likely to be fazed by that.

Now, of course, Mullen might not be Jeremy Foley’s first choice. There’s been speculation he might take another run at Bob Stoops, though that would seem quite a longshot. And other names floated include another former Meyer assistant, Louisville’s Charlie Strong, along with Utah’s Kyle Whittingham and Arkansas’ Bobby Petrino. Some lists throw Boise State’s Chris Petersen and former NFL coach Jon Gruden into the mix as well.

But you’ve got to figure Mullen tops the list because, in addition to his Florida connections and looking like a perfect fit for the job, it also would remove him from the bank of potential rival coaches. The chances of him staying for the long haul in Starkville seem pretty slim. And if the top job were to come open in Athens after next season and Mullen hadn’t yet made a move from Mississippi State, he’d likely top Greg McGarity’s search list.

Personally, I’m hoping Richt turns things around and it doesn’t come to that. I like him as a person and as a coach, and I really don’t want the program to have to go through a coaching change.

But I’ve got to agree with those who say a re-energized Florida program minus a coach who’d lost his mojo doesn’t bode well for UGA’s prospects in Jacksonville and the SEC East. What do you think?

If UGA doesnt beat Boise next fall
it will be a gross embarassment for the whole SEC.
So, Go for it, Dogs. Personally, I think a lot of Georgia’s spirit is already burned out, at least in the minds of most of the supporters here, when they have to resort to, with the exception of recruiting, predicting the impact on Georgia of Urban Meyer leaving. What if he goes west and “advises” the Boise State staff on how to whip the Dogs. Heh Heh.

It does not matter who is the coach at Florida, the last three coaches at Florida have winning records against Georgia, and not much has transpired among the coaching ranks at Georgia to suggest that the next Florida coach will not continue to embarass our program. I can only hope our new DC Grantham can recruit some better defensive players and improve that side of the ball.

the timing for uga is horrible since florida will get a very talented, smart head coach who will win big
iin the sunshine state.

I AM AFRAID COACH RICHT HAS FALLEN BEHIND THE TIMES in developing unigue and awesome offense ,even the ole ball coach has reinvented himself, while uga is still running the same offense since richt has been in athens.

mullen will be the guy florida i would think will hire,,but maybe not ,if he is not the guy, maybe uga will have an opportunity to hire him next year.

i hope i am wrong ,but i see the dawgs record the same in 11 as it was this year in 10.

There goes the best young coach (Dan Mullen) in the SEC to Florida. We shoulda had him lined up after the last lost in jacksonville.Spurrier has SC rockin the east.,soon the gators and Vols will be rite there too.So where does that leave UGA?Think coach valium will have us there too?Theres a dark cloud over Athens and the sun ain’t gonna shine til MR who hides behind his bible,is replaced with a coach who demands excellence!11 arrest.losses to Col,Miss ST,Ark and Spurrier.UGA wake up!!!!!

Georgia is not exacty chopped liver! The point with Florida “always being Florida” has always been made on the left coast with USC– the perennial dominant program. But Oregon seems to have managed well. Same for Georgia. There is no reason the Dawgs cannot win national championships– and Georgia’s resources by comparison– are far greater than Oregon’s.

It really won’t matter who Florida brings in because Florida now looks at the big picture, winning the nat champ or winning the SEC. If you read half the blogs we are still stuck on beating Tech to be satisfied so UGA is still stuck on the same old merry-go-round and only a new attitude with a will to win it all will change that.

I don’t care about Richt as a person – I don’t know him so it really doesn’t matter, right? I do think Richt better get back to actually coaching and less time on his personal stuff – if he’s changed his mind about what he wanted out of his career then he just needs to turn in his resignation.

Nuff said.

What sucks is Florida is going to hire a great coach. They are getting a jump on us. We should fire Richt now and hire Mullin before Florida does!

I watched the 4-A HS champ game last night. I am convinced that one negative for UGA under Richt is that he has not recruited metro Atlanta kids enough. We have this shot gun approach to recruiting and on the field, we end up with a group of all stars with no cohesion. A disconnect with the players is due to them being from SC or NJ or Texas or Florida or Tenn. They all expect to be in the NFL and that is their only motivation.

Of course, AU recruits Georgia well, so maybe I am wrong. Same with UT and SC. Maybe THEY get the good Georgians and we get some fair ones from out of state.

Take AJ Green, he was supposedly All World but SC has a home grown receiver that made first team All SEC and we had one from SC that sold his jersey and so he sat, which cost UGA about 4 losses.

Enough is enough ………………CMR needs to resign. 10 years is time enough to win bi and he has FAILED.

Someone out there give me some good news on UGA’s Gathers and Bean Anderson. Bean had turf toe and missed this season. How about Gathers? he has/had tons of family in the NFL.

Will he and Gathers BOLSTER UGA’s middle on D ??? Are they both huge? Could on spell the other at Nose Tackle?? If so, the addition of these two would make us far better on the D line and then Abry Jones and D’Angelo Tyson would become third and 4th stringers, which is what they are anyway. They are so horrible.

JUCO could help too and UGA ought to sign two or three of them for the D line.

I think the best thing for UGA is to quit worrying about what does/does not happen at UF or Auburn and worry about how they are going to improve and go back to winning. I think the string of UF victories have less to do with UF and more to do with UGA not tending to business like strength and conditioning, tackling and blocking and playing as a TEAM. Doing better at all those things would be in UGA’s best interest.

So it’s Wil Muschamp, and Texas has no bowl game to get ready for so he can hit the recruiting trail immediately. And he’s 39 and probably would have been Richt’s replacement… before. Not a particularly good night to be a Bulldog, I don’t think.
