Clean Old Fashioned Hate reigns every week. (Collegeflagsandbanners.com)

I’ve seen this referred to as Hate Week II since Georgia and Georgia Tech meet in men’s basketball tonight, the Lady Dogs already having fallen to the Lady Jackets on Sunday.

But let’s face it, when it comes to the Dogs and Jackets, every week is Hate Week.

You’ve no doubt seen the supporters of the Institute show up in this forum from time to time, taking their shots at UGA. A year ago most of their posts were ridiculing Georgia’s bowl game destination: Shreveport.

Typical was a comment from a GT fan calling himself Toe Meets Leather, who opined: “I think the greatest challenge facing UGA will be concentrating on Texas A&M, given the tremendous distraction posed by leisure time in the great metropolitan area of SHREVEPORT! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah.

Funny, I’m not seeing too many posts comparing the respective teams’ bowl destinations this year. Both teams finished with 6-6 records, but Georgia is headed to Memphis, home of Graceland and Beale Street and a short ride from the Mississippi casinos, while Tech is going to … Shreveport.

George O'Leary has a 3-4 record against the Dogs since getting rescued off that island. (Turner Home Entertainment)

George O'Leary has a 3-4 record against the Dogs since getting rescued off that island. (Turner Home Entertainment)

At least Tech fans are consistent, though. They didn’t think much of Shreveport last year and apparently don’t think much of it now that their own team is going there; thus the school is offering discounted tickets to the Independence Bowl for just $14 to the first 5,000 purchasers. Maybe they ought to throw in a Coke and a hot dog.

Of course, there’s a slight Tech connection to Georgia’s bowl destination, too, as the Dogs will be playing the 24th-ranked Central Florida  Golden Knights (there’s that color again) led by former Tech coach George O’Leary, who has a 3-4 career record against the Dogs that includes the infamous three in a row that got Jim Donnan canned.

As for tonight’s game, the home team has won all but one of these rivalry matches since the series returned to home-and-home in the 1995-96 season after 14 years at the Omni. The exception was 10 years ago when Georgia won at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. So Tech probably ought to be considered the favorite tonight, even though Georgia comes into the game with a slightly better record and the Jackets have lost two straight, including by 20 points to Northwestern. They also got beat by Kennesaw State earlier in the season.

Last year, Georgia upset the No. 20 ranked Jackets 73-66 in Athens (where Tech hasn’t won since Gerald Ford was president). Making it two years in a row would be a definite step forward for Mark Fox’s program and wouldn’t hurt in recruiting Atlanta kids, either. Also, a win on the road against the Jackets would be a big plus in trying to make the NCAA tourney. Along those lines, the game is being televised nationally on ESPN2.

Win or lose, though, Dogs fans can take comfort in the fact that Georgia’s not going to battle the distractions of Shreveport this year.

And Tech is.

You think Toe Meets Leather is still laughing?

Go Dogs!

UPDATE: Another thriller in the “Thrillerdome.” Great 3-point shooting by Dustin Ware, especially that last basket. But Mark Fox’s Dogs could have made it a lot easier on themselves if their free-throw shooting was stronger. That’s definitely an area that needs improvement. Still, a great win in Atlanta!

DawginLex, I see you are taking the high road as always. Are you planning to go to Memphis for the bowl game?

It has recently been learned that DawginLex is an Obama voter and is a friend of Robert Gibbs, so we can discount anything from him.

Paul Hewitt and Richt go to the same hairdresser.

Believe they tan together also.

You Georgia ladies are getting a lot of new daddies next year. Enjoy.

I know from experience, the Liberty Bowl is a great game and spending NYE on Beale St is a great experience. Watching the Independence Bowl and waiting 4 hours in the cold to catch a ride back to the Mall parking lot, not so much fun. I’ve been to both Shreveport and Memphis many, many times. I know of what I speak when I say both are completely safe unless you are just completely stupid. But for me and mine, We’ll be in Memphis

Wonder if Georgia will ever win 7 games again. Probably not.

Shreveport, Memphis, next year 0.

Richt gets a raise. Grantham gets a collar.

UGAVIII croaks with another Kentucky loss.

I think Paul Johnson’s decision to allow UGA to score on there last drive may have been the best football decision in order to get the ball back, but I bet his players will never forgive him for it. I’ve never seen that before in 50 years of watching College football. Then he was forced into playing the PASS for their drive. The one thing Tech has no ability to do. UGLY Game all around but a win is a win.

As for the Bowls, I guess both teams got what they deserved. One bowl is not better than the other, and both teams are lucky to get it, but look at it this way. You’re not playing on that Blue Turf freezing your butt off or going to the Emerald “Hold on to your Nuts” Bowl. May both teams bring back a win and have a better shot next year…except of course that last week in November! GO DAWGS!! Beat That Lying Irish Pledgerizer! Woof Woof

Just curious – and I know no one really cares about womens bb. But why is Landers still coach? He’s the Hewitt of womens bb. Great talent – awful game coach since the mid-90s. The game has passed him by.

Had Nesbitt played….! Had Madonna been born with balls, she would be a man. Had Georgia not lost a game, they would be playing for the National Championship. Had I been born rich, I could have retired years ago. Had I been rich and good-looking I could have maybe married Jennifer Lopez. But none of those things happened.
Georgia beat Tech for the ninth time in ten years, period!

Both teams underperformed horribly this year so it’s a gift that they’re going to bowl games. To be perfectly honest, neither team’s fans should rub salt in the others wounds … .500 records aren’t anything to brag about and the only consolation prize is the ability of both teams to have a few more weeks of practice to prepare for spring practice and fall camp.

I’ll enjoy watching both of them play but I’m not pleased with the overall results … and no one associated with the programs is either.

On another note, how ’bout them Georgia Southern Eagles? Advancing to the quarterfinals of the 1-AA playoffs. Their new coach has certainly done an amazing job!

Old Dawg: Good point about Georgia Southern. They
have an ex-GT QB by the name of Jaybo Shaw who can pass the ball as well as run the option.

Bill King: I am a GT fan but also a UGA friend. I do not hate UGA. Most of my family are huge UGA fans. As far as
the ” Toe Meets Leather” guy, he should be ashamed of his last year`s comment. It is a dishonor to our legendary Al Ciraldo, who was a dedicated Yellow Jacket just as is Laerry Munson to UGA.

And this is why I hate the UGA fan base. You have someone who probably never graced the halls of UGA (Bill King), and who wasn’t qualified to grace the halls of GT taking cheap shots at Tech fans. As far as ticket sales, most of the UGA fan base are a bunch of fat, stupid unemployed rednecks who live and die for Saturdays at Sanford Stadium while most Tech fans graduate and have moved away from ATL for their jobs.

This may have been one of the most immature articles I have ever read in the AJC.

The karma train for the Techies hasn’t reached its final destination yet. The only thing worse than playing in Shreveport is LOSING in Shreveport. Let us not forget that the Joke by Coke is the single biggest laughingstock of the entire bowl season. 5 bowl losses in a row and counting. I see no reason why this year will be any different.

But I do understand your point. We laughed at all the Tech players on the Jumbotron last year at Grant Field when almost all of the seniors said that their best memory of their entire career was beating Georgia. One time. We’re 1-0 for 9 of the last ten years and you’re best response is “you’re right, we stink.” Must make you proud.

DawgNation,

It’s time for revenge.

If you remove the ‘C’ from UCF, you get UF (follow my redneck logic).

Thus we, the great ‘Dawg Nation,’ get might get a little pay-back from the state of Florida.

However, given our current track-record against our southern neighbor, we’ll probably return from the bowl game with our little dawgie nads in our hands.

Win or lose, I’ll be watching the game on HD wide-screen (that the taxpayers bought) in Mama’s trailer — while getting drunk and sniffing my sister’s crotch.

That’s what we do. We’re Dawg Fans.

Anybody want a beer?

Go Dawgs!

I think that there might be those out there who enjoyed beating Tennessee more, but to me, there’s nothing like beating Tech (even stinky terrible Tech teams 51-7) It’s just the gift that keeps on giving. 16 out of the last 20 years. 9 out of the last 10. Now, if we can only beat Tech at basketball tonight and take the one last thing that they have any pride in away from them, my year will be complete.

THANKS UGA

December 7th, 2010

All the players from Ga. Tech would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of the Great State Of Georgia.
Especially the fine folks at the University of Georgia.
This season we were able to be a part of an event that was every college football players dream.
To play in front of a sold out crowd.
Thanks again UGA for making a dream come true .
I think our Seniors are even thinking about putting the number of attendance 92,000+ on their Class Ring. Along with the score ofcourse.
42-34
Thanks again for something we’ll never forget.

Question: How many fans does the Tech football stadium hold? No one knows, it has never been filled.

Tech can not blame UGA or anyone else for their poor attendance. Attendance is like voting. No one votes for Tech. Some high schools have more fans. Face it, no one votes for Tech.

Tech is at best a mid level team that celebrates a 8 point loss. They get rings for winning once ever 10 years. Folks, that is mid level at best.
