Clean Old Fashioned Hate reigns every week. (Collegeflagsandbanners.com)
I’ve seen this referred to as Hate Week II since Georgia and Georgia Tech meet in men’s basketball tonight, the Lady Dogs already having fallen to the Lady Jackets on Sunday.
But let’s face it, when it comes to the Dogs and Jackets, every week is Hate Week.
You’ve no doubt seen the supporters of the Institute show up in this forum from time to time, taking their shots at UGA. A year ago most of their posts were ridiculing Georgia’s bowl game destination: Shreveport.
Typical was a comment from a GT fan calling himself Toe Meets Leather, who opined: “I think the greatest challenge facing UGA will be concentrating on Texas A&M, given the tremendous distraction posed by leisure time in the great metropolitan area of SHREVEPORT! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah. ”
Funny, I’m not seeing too many posts comparing the respective teams’ bowl destinations this year. Both teams finished with 6-6 records, but Georgia is headed to Memphis, home of Graceland and Beale Street and a short ride from the Mississippi casinos, while Tech is going to … Shreveport.

George O'Leary has a 3-4 record against the Dogs since getting rescued off that island. (Turner Home Entertainment)
At least Tech fans are consistent, though. They didn’t think much of Shreveport last year and apparently don’t think much of it now that their own team is going there; thus the school is offering discounted tickets to the Independence Bowl for just $14 to the first 5,000 purchasers. Maybe they ought to throw in a Coke and a hot dog.
Of course, there’s a slight Tech connection to Georgia’s bowl destination, too, as the Dogs will be playing the 24th-ranked Central Florida Golden Knights (there’s that color again) led by former Tech coach George O’Leary, who has a 3-4 career record against the Dogs that includes the infamous three in a row that got Jim Donnan canned.
As for tonight’s game, the home team has won all but one of these rivalry matches since the series returned to home-and-home in the 1995-96 season after 14 years at the Omni. The exception was 10 years ago when Georgia won at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. So Tech probably ought to be considered the favorite tonight, even though Georgia comes into the game with a slightly better record and the Jackets have lost two straight, including by 20 points to Northwestern. They also got beat by Kennesaw State earlier in the season.
Last year, Georgia upset the No. 20 ranked Jackets 73-66 in Athens (where Tech hasn’t won since Gerald Ford was president). Making it two years in a row would be a definite step forward for Mark Fox’s program and wouldn’t hurt in recruiting Atlanta kids, either. Also, a win on the road against the Jackets would be a big plus in trying to make the NCAA tourney. Along those lines, the game is being televised nationally on ESPN2.
Win or lose, though, Dogs fans can take comfort in the fact that Georgia’s not going to battle the distractions of Shreveport this year.
And Tech is.
You think Toe Meets Leather is still laughing?
Go Dogs!
UPDATE: Another thriller in the “Thrillerdome.” Great 3-point shooting by Dustin Ware, especially that last basket. But Mark Fox’s Dogs could have made it a lot easier on themselves if their free-throw shooting was stronger. That’s definitely an area that needs improvement. Still, a great win in Atlanta!

2009 – uga to shreveport, gt to orange bowl
2010 – gt to shreveport, uga to … memphis
i think i’ll take gt’s last couple of seasons over uga’s, thanks.
let’s make that three seasons.
gt: 26-13 since CPJ arrived, after going 23-16 in 3 years before that. and an ACC title, let’s not forget.
uga: 24-14 in that same time span, after going 30-9 in 3 years before that. no actual titles won, but SI did rank them number 1 for about a week in 2008, until they started playing…
so you tell me – which program is winning championships lately and which one is going downhill?

In the days where Locational Pride is the thing, I have never heard a fanbase make fun of their surroundings as much as Tech fans do.
To call Georgia fans rednecks and low class country boys, is really bizarre to me.

tech is nearly out of chan gailey recruits and the top RB’s in the south aren’t buying into this system. once roddy and allen leave(allen will go this year) tech will have no one left. Wes, this is the beginning of the end for tech. Oh and by the way UGA plays in the SEC, you know the conference that has the toughest competition and the past 4 NCAA champions, if tech was back in the SEC, tech would go 5-7 every year. ACC=Almost Competitive Conference

JaxDawg05 – Nesbitt missed a quarter and a half of last years GT/UGA game after UGA intentionally twisted his knee in a pile up. (That’s why it was funny to hear your fans cry about Fairley this year). It did have a big impact on last years game.
I do agree running QB’s do get hurt more often and all Nesbitt’s backups are smaller than him. Next year we may need 2-3 QB’s to finish the season.
Running quarterbacks are not very effective when they stand on the sidelines hurt. Also, I don’t think Aaron Murray was looking for contact standing in the pocket after completing a pass. Nesbitt should look for contact on EVERY play.

Oh what heritage UGAG has:
Fraud, Corruption,instituionally sanctioned academic fraud
Athletics Director resigning in disgrace
UGA President Fred Davison resigning in disgrace
UGA’ academic and athletic programs found by a Federal court
to have been committing blatant academic fraud
And here, for all to see is the REAL HERITAGE of UGA:
from UGA’s very own Dr. Leroy Ervin, who says it all in a manner so clear during the Jan Kemp trial, that no one can refute.
Secretly taped at a faculty meeting, then-remedial studies boss
Leroy Ervin told his staff:
“I know for a fact that these kids(athletes) would not be here if it were not for their utility to the institution… . They are used as a kind of raw material in the production of some goods to be sold as whatever product, and they get nothing in return.”
So much to be proud of.

Enough with the disparaging remarks about the city of Memphis. Congratulations, but watching the highly dramatized series, The First 48, does not make one an expert on Memphis. Having spent 4 years in Athens and seen plenty of Atlanta (including a game at Grant Field), I’m no more worried in downtown Memphis than downtown Atlanta. Heck, even Athens (which I love to death) has housing projects across from Brumby Hall. Did those people haul off and stab UGA students ? No. And neither will anybody in Memphis. Memphis is absolutely thrilled to have Georgia and its going to be a great time for locals, fans, and teams alike.
FYI: Memphis is the 40th largest metropolitan area (19th largest city) with a population of 1.3million. Shreveport is the 130th largest metropolitan area with a population of 391,000. Big difference folks.

Oh, and lets not forget this gem from good old UGA Alumnus Hale Almand’s opening statement to the Federal jury during the Jan Kemp trial:
UGA attorney Hale Almand, in his opening remarks to the jury, set an unfortunate tone:
“We may not make a university student out of him, but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbage man when he gets through with his athletic career.”
Such a lasting heritage for UGAG fans to be proud of.

As a Tech fan I have to agree that Tech fans are probably not going to the Shreveport bowl. Maybe im a bad fan but the thought of taking time off of work, to go to Shreveport La and watch a game against Air Force isn’t exactly appealing. Plus the game will probably be over in 2 hours. If GT gave me $50 and a ticket I think I would still stay home.
As for tonights game. I’m a little torn. I always want my team to win but a humiliating loss at home to our rivals could end up being really good thing for our program. So UGA, if you are going to win then win by a lot.

Almand’s statement make it clear…
UGA had NO INTENTION WHATSOEVER and ensuring that student-athletes graduate. Illiterate players were PURPOSELY enrolled at UGA as
Student-Athletes for the……ONLY REASON……to play football and GENERATE MONEY for the private corporation called the UGA Athletic Association.

Actualy the thought of two “football first” teams getting riled up for a basketball game is amusing.
When both teams have their basketball games sold out, say like Duke, Carolina, Ky or UConn let me know so I can get riled up about the game.
Until then, I will probably watch Memphis at Kansas, two real basketball teams.

NATS – a recommendation:
You should only hire Head Coaches named Bobby for Football and Basketball. Stay away from the “Pauls.” Football – oh, you NATS fan, you won’t believe me, but football at Tech is going farther downhill. This past season was the first of four consecutive seasons of disappointment. Say bye-bye to P.J. after 2013. As for P.H.; it might be bye-bye after tonight? Looking forward to a Dawgs win tonight so the Tech fans will have an opportunity to celebrate.
