A Georgia Bulldogs fan’s wish list for 2011

What's on your Georgia football wish list? (SportsFanFare.com)

What's on your Georgia football wish list? (SportsFanFare.com)

With the regular season over and the bowl pairing still to come, a lot of fans are looking ahead to next season and debating what changes, additions and tweaks are needed to pull Mark Richt’s program out of its two-season slump. Here’s my own wish list for the Dawgs, which is topped by:

A big, bad JUCO nose guard to bolster the undersized defensive line. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is in dire need of more bulk and aggressive play on the defensive line, and while signing Thomasville defensive end Ray Drew looks like a must, Georgia can’t wait for a true freshman to mature. So let’s hope some of the junior college lineman the Dogs reportedly are looking at wind up in Athens next season.

A more consistent Mike Bobo. Richt has indicated the former Georgia QB will return as his offensive coordinator, and while that decision isn’t popular with some fans, I’m OK with it. (An interesting discussion of Bobo’s pros and cons has been taking place at Get the Picture.) Bobo is a fine developer of quarterbacks and shows flashes of brilliance as a playcaller. The problem is he’s inconsistent, too often going away from what’s working in what appears to be a misguided attempt at balance. He needs to step up his game next season if the Richt era is to continue at UGA.

A new gamebreaker on offense. With the Dogs likely to lose A.J. Green, it becomes more crucial than ever to sign a player who opposing defenses have to account for on every play. Say, a blue-chip back like Isaiah Crowell. Returnees Washaun Ealey and Caleb King are decent running backs but nobody’s going to be talking about them being a first-round NFL draft pick. Just ask Steve Spurrier what adding a top-ranked running threat can do for your program.

A new rising star at wide receiver. If the Dogs do indeed lose Green along with senior Kris Durham, someone besides Tavarres King is going to have to step up in the receiving corps. Can Marlon Brown finally live up to his potential in his third year in Athens? I’d love to see it happen. Or will it have to be a true freshman? With Mitchell County’s Justin Scott-Wesley reportedly now soft on his commitment to UGA, the pressure is on to sign a receiver who can make a difference in a hurry.

Strength. As in the strength for Richt to make the hard decision to replace his best friend, Dave Van Halanger, as director of Georgia’s strength and conditioning program. The Dogs have been getting pushed around on both lines for too long now and the comments from opposing players about our guys being gassed late in the game have been cropping up far too frequently. Those mat drills might have been cutting-edge at FSU in 1990s, but they’re not getting the job done these days in Athens.

Those are the things I think are most needed. What’s on your wish list for the Dogs?

Would Jeff Madden be an option for strength and conditioning coach? They are looking at make changes at Texas so maybe a change of scenery will be good for Coach Madden and the S & C Coach at UGA. Thanks!

Unfortunately Crowell is headed to Tuscaloosa. Saban has him locked. If we don’t sign a big time threat at WR we are in trouble. Our TE will be getting more catches.

Two Questions:

1. Roddy Jones, how does it feel to get LIT UP by Akeem Dent??
2. Tevin Washington, how does it feel to be dragged 8 yards into the endzone by Justin Houston?

Hope that Richard Samuel is as good of an LB as advertised, big shoes to fill taking Gamble and Dent’s role. Dent was one of the unsung leaders of this season’s D.

I agree about Marlon Brown, hope he is as good as advertised after being used sparingly in his first 2 seasons.

lets add a fullback to that mix, probably have some on the roster now that can fill that but they need to be developed…at WR, i think we will be alright, we have some good ones, not elite based on rivals or scout, but pretty good, also, we will get Lonnie O. from juco, i’m assuming he will be able to get in school, also Michael Bennet is going to surprise some people…Of course we don’t have an AJ, but not many do, and its not a forgone conclusion that he won’t be back, alot of things being discussed right now, so don’t automatically assume he will be gone, but i wouldn’t bet either way…Defense, up front is where the most improvement in my opinion is needed, it starts there, Jarvis Jones and Richard S. will definately help us at LB, the secondary has to step it up, and i believe if we get better in a hurry up front, the secondary will look amazilngly better…Of course we all know we need that homerun hitter at RB…we are looking good in that dept but need to close the deal on two of the state’s finest…I would love to see Bobo continue the use of the TE as he did against AU and Tech, we have too much talent there not to exploit the other team with them…go dawgs and lets get after those recruits….

We have already seen how good Tavarres King can be, but as long as we have had AJ Green in there, he never was a primary target. Even when AJ got suspended, Richt and Bobo showed us they were MUCH more affraid than they wanted us to know about breaking in Murray.

Next year, assuming AJ is def gone, since we are all aware of just how good Muray is and will be, we can tweak the playbook to adjust to him. It’s not like you can do this mid-season people. Now we have an entire offseason to start accomodating Murray.

Isaiah Crowell would be huge. But let that play out before we start counting him in or out. Washaun Ealey needs to start taking his role more serious.

1. Start with a new strength/conditioning coach. 2 trainers from the Athens area have commented privately how Van Halanger is behind the times & would not attend the educational conferences where new advancements were discussed (and adopted by our rivals). We dominated scoring in the first 3 quarters this season (343-189), but were outscored in the 4th by a significant margin (68 vs. 85).

2. Let Bobo coach quarterbacks but hire an offensive coordinator who will keep his foot on the gas pedal until the game clock shows 0:00. Just for ONE example, we threw for 220 yards and 3 TDs in the first half against Tech, then threw 5 more passes and almost let Tech beat us. UNTIL we have a good defense, we HAVE to emphasis scoring with no let-up due to shifting to our inconsistent running game. Coach Richt said AFTER the game “we probably should have thrown more in the 2nd half”. Too late when spoken AFTER the game is over!!!

3. Give us TWO new big, quick and relentless defensive linemen; seeing Jarvis Jones and Richard Samuel boost our playmaking at LB, and for one of our safeties to become a force like Greg Blue, Thomas Davis, Sean Jones, etc. Add a good right tackle and a star running back, and we will be fine. We might not be that far away — a couple of playmakers on each side of the ball, and better coaching.

4. Tweak our offensive approach to maximize Murray’s abilities. Why put him in the pocket after slowing him down with play action, when it’s obvious from the game situation that it’s a passing down!? It just slows Murray and increases the chance of pressure in his face…..

i love how insecure all the dawg (sic) fans are, acting like any of the last two victories over tech have been beat-downs. (same goes for tech fans and our win in 08). it’s not a beat down when the game is still on the line with 3 minutes to play, it’s a close game. a beat down is like the 49-10 georgia florida fiasco, where the game is over (and you fans have left the stadium) by halftime). or any uga-tennessee game from the last several years, or down 31-0 at the half against bama (plenty of uga beatdowns to list).

even last year, when you ran all over tech’s weak sauce defense, who was powerless to stop what they knew was coming, it wasnt a beat down. dominating on offense doenst mean jack if your own defense cant stop the other team. tech was driving for a winning score in the last minutes of the game and the game was only sealed when a current starting NFL reciever dropped a gimmie pass. winning because of a missed extra point doesnt exactly equate to dominance.

if anything, uga should be embarrassed by how close all these games have been. with the marked advantage in money, facilities, and talent that uga has over tech, you SHOULD be blowing them out year in, year out, and not pulling out wins (or losses) by the skin of your teeth year after year.

Observation

You can wish in one hand and, well you know, in the other and see which fills up faster. Giving Richt another year to turn this around is a mistake as it’s only delaying the inevitable by one more year. Due to the admins and many fans refusal to demand excellence, we will be sentenced to another underachieving year of mediocrity. UGA will be staring at yet another 6 – 6 season a year from now when its all said and done because Richt and this staff have lost their edge and are cooked.

a new Junkyard Blawger for the AJC! Too much soft-minded lazy writing. Are you seriously still banging on Bobo’s playcalling? The team scores a ton of points on a regular basis(the only exception was the Chicken game). I’m also sick of people on here, and elsewhere, dogging the runningbacks. They have put jukes on and breaks tackles just to get out of their own backfield. Our O-line is as soft as they come and there isn’t a back short of Barry Sanders that can be regularly effective with zero blocking.

Look at Georgia Tech’s Bowl scenarios for a second……

Scenario 1. SHREEPORT baby!!!! Tech will go there, and likely beat Air Force. But who cares if they win. Do we need to pull up countless blogs over the last year where the bugs made fun of us and rubbed it in that we went to Shreveport last year? This will truly be a poetic piece of KARMA!!

Scenario 2. SAN FRANCISCO. This bowl would be hillarious for Tech for a couple reasons. A) The game is played Jan 9th. Nobody is still out of work for the holidays then. If you think Tech travels poorly already, let’s see how they travel cross country on Jan 9th toa less than desirable location. B) They will be playing Boise State out there. Oh my…… can you imagine Boise State SHREDDING the bugs defense??? LOL!!!!!!!!

Happy Dicks, that’s the same argument UF uses against us – they don’t count the 1905 loss because it was supposedly played by a “club” team, whatever that means. But does anyone doubt that UF would count that game if it had won? I have to be consistent on this – if Georgia had won the WWII games, I have no doubt we would count those as wins.

61-39 or 61-37, it’s still a wide margin. If Tech ever catches up, it won’t be in our lifetimes.

JSW ain’t coming, I doubt we’ll even send him the paperwork for him to commit – our choice is what it sounds like as he was quoted saying he hadn’t heard from us for a long time.

CVH issue is strange – I think the players take advantage of his unwillingness to be a hardass and demand hard work – he will praise them no matter what – I know for a fact we’ve had poor offseason attendance of workouts by certain players and he does not call them out. His concepts are still OK, conditioning doesn’t change, but it might be time for someone new. But I don’t expect Coach Richt to make a change.

I think nutrition is the area that desparately needs attention – these kids are eating big volumes, but I do not believe the right mix is being consumed, which is as important as anything they are or are not doing in the weightroom.

no moral victories. all that really counts is wins and losses, but i’d rather be in the game then be down by 30+ at the half. as i said, you guys should be blowing tech out. look at the recruiting, the $$ your program has, the facilities etc. obviously i’d rather win, but i thought we were going to get crushed last weekend, so i guess actually having a close game is a plus, though it makes the loss that much harder since we couldve won it with a little different bounce of the ball (say into one of our guys hands instead of yours on that last kickoff return). my point is that none of the games since CPJ arrived have been blowouts, as all have gone down to the wire. makes for great viewing, but i wouldnt be bragging like you’re world beaters because of it. i’ll give tech fans a little more room for bragging since as i said, they should be getting crushed year in and year out by big brother.

i’ll once again point out the tech is to gerogia as georgia is to florida analogy. you guys were all saying it was nice to not get blown out this year, despite the loss. and since i have degrees from UF as well as tech, i guess i can throw out this reminder to you

Ealey? Has same ypc as Lattimore, better in 4th quarter than Lattimore, right there with Herscel Walker’s career ypc average, Bobo just doesn’t give him 40 touches like Lattimore gets. Ealey also has a bunch of td’s in the red zone, 1 for every 12 touches. Ealey averaged close to 6 ypc last seaosn, and Bobo still didn’t give him 40 touches. So ain’t no new RB that’s gonna play better than Ealey (which is better than Lattiomre). Even if you get one, Bobo won’t give him 40 carries a game like Lattimore. Ealey/King were in top 5 over last 3 games of 09′ with same O-Line, O-Line is #1 most experienced in NCAA, so Murray couldn’t call run audibles as well as Joe Cox, or stretch the field to get 8 out of the box like Cox could.

Murray? Got to go. 6-6, no victories against any teams with a winning record. ok against bad teams, really horrible against good teams. Really inaccurate in pressure situations (3rd down, 4th quarter, red zone, etc.). Looking forward to Lemay, Mason or Gray leading this team back to winning. Cox could throw for 5 or 6 td’s when he had to and outscored high scoring offenses like Arkansas and Auburn. Murray couldn’t.

D-Line? Morant & Stripling & Smith & Thornton are all tough, also can move Tyson to DE which suits him better. NT is the problem. Geathers should dominate next year, but I’d get a JUCO just in case.

WR? King & Charles both get high ypcatch. Wooten did 20 ypcatch in 09. Gray’s at 15 ypcatch. Brown really improved this year. But you gotta have a QB who can get them the ball, especially when the game’s on the line. Will be fine. Not been a problem.

Murray’s not the problem with our offense. He did play poorly during the 1st half against Florida. Otherwise, he had a great freshman season. He had an underachieving offensive line, an offensive coordinator who held him back at times, and an offensive coordinator who would take his foot off of the gas pedal, just to achieve some elusive balance on offense. Bobo did the same thing in the past, not just this year. Tech never stopped our passing game – BOBO did. Ealey and King are decent backs, but neither has the Knowshon ability to make something out of nothing. YET, Bobo would try to force the issue. Anyone who pays attention to our play calling would have noticed, for a long time now, that if Georgia throws incomplete on 1st down, the next play was a run between the tackles at least 80% of the time. Thus, we often had a 3rd and 8, putting our QB under extra pass rush. On radio, Kevin Butler has commented about this trend, but this predictability has been under-reported. Whenever we get a SOLID defense again, we can afford to waste a few drives each game. Not now. Not while our defense fades as the game goes along………

2) that jarvis jones and richard samuel become the impact ILB’s that we need in the 3-4. their size and speed is going to help at a position where we were undersized last year.

3) that houston and boykin come back. green is gone unless there’s a lockout, but if those two come back we’ve got a fighting chance at having a good defense next year.

Agree with the top 4 for sure. Maybe Rantavious Wooten can be that go-to receiver — great freshman season, inexplicable sophomore slump. Or Marlon Brown. Or Chris Conley.

There’s no reason necessarily to replace Van Halanger. Just hire a few consultants to gather the best models for strength and conditioning, then have Van Halanger implement it. It may be hard for a coach to change his sideline philosophy, but it shouldn’t be hard for a program based on medical science to adapt with the latest research.

Don’t raise an outcry if Van Halanger sticks around. But do raise an outcry if Van Halanger says he’s not changing a thing.

Ealey is averaging over 5.33 ypc this year, Herschel Walker got 4.9 his Soph season.
Walker had 18 tds, Ealey 11 (on 50% less carries).

Ealey’s 5.3 ypc, much better than Lattimore’s 4.8 ypc.
Ealey’s conditoning is better than Latt too. Ealey gets 6.83 ypc in the 4th quarter, Latt gets 5.9.

Under pressure, Ealey’s his best:

John- have to agree with your assessment of Ealey/Lattimore. Ealye avg almost a yard more a carry but Lattimore received 90 more carries over the course of the season. It’s more than safe to say that if Ealey was getting 40 carries a game his stats would look almost identical to Lattimores.

Has Marlon Brown just taken a back seat because of Green or is he not progressing. Dude probably has 10 catches over 2 years.

Couldn’t disagree more with you take on Murray. Minus Lattimore and Murray wins SEC frosh of the year. Worst game of the year was first half of Florida. He’s not going anywhere. Lemay will certainly redshirt.

First thing that should be done is Richt should be given a new long term contract. That will help recruiting. Recruits love Richt, their parents love Richt and he is big hope for recruiting. Let recruits see that UGA is as loyal to Richt as he is to UGA and recruiting will get better. There have been so many questions about whether CMR will be fired or not that recruits are queazy. And so much talk about next year being the must year for CMR. Not good for recruiting. AD needs to come out and say CMR is the long term Coach for UGA and he has 3 years to turn things around and he has total support of AD. That is where we start. Bobo is a fine OC. He is best QB man we have ever had. Defense is major question. Can TG get it done? Not convinced of that yet but we will see.

The Blair Witch Kick Project or some insensible thing. He is sceaming about wide left or I was left out or some crazy thing. He is often heard screaming There goes Ealey, there goes Caleb King, or there goes Orson Charles or there goes Kris Durham. Hit Murray, hit Murray. Sad. Pressure does this ………………See C Urban Meyer.
He is also deliriously screaming that we CAN PASS the ball …………..we can, I know that we can.

Brown sat on the bench because Kris Durham kept him there. AJ was AJ.

Back to Durham ………………..he was a starter because …………… first AJ was out and then, when AJ returned, who was gonna bench a fith year, hard working, smart, team leader like Kris Durham after he has shown what he can do ???

College ball is when two players are identical in skill set, the senior LEADER plays more often. THAT is how you build up your team esprit d’ corps. Durham responded with an ALL SEC caliberyear. He will at least be second team and if not, they should have so honored him. Unlike Green, DURHAM will be remembered by UGA faithful for ever.

Marvelous Marlon Brown will get stronger and develop his routes and will work with Murray and he will be ready to go. He knows that now is his time. Frankly, look at Justin Houston or Dent ………………not many folks knew their names this time last year but now, BOTH have might be a first or second day NFL draft choices.

Marlon also knows that the entire sporting world will be watching UGA vs Boise State because of Aaron Murray ,…………………….. Marlon can ALSO make his name on the first day.

Why does it take our players so long to “learn the system” that never works. Our starters on defense are always out of position and no defense should give up the amount of points every year that we do. If our system is so complicated that it takes a year for a player to learn, why does it only take 5 days for opposing coaches to figure it out and implement.

You and I sure do think alike. All I can say about CMR keeping Bobo is even though as long as he has had the coordinators job Bobo is still coaching the same way as the first year. That tells me Bobo thinks he is doing a great job. At time he does a very good job but we lose the game when he changes what is working to something that ends up three and out or a turn over.

75-76-DAWG

December 1st, 2010

If Bobo does not improve a lot next year and the only way to get rid of him is to get rid of CMR then so be it. I am one of CMR biggest supporters but he can not judge real talent at times and I think Bobo is too arrogant to know when he does the ‘DUMB SH##” . I don’t think Bobo is capable of getting more consistent and we will have the same problems next year.
I know a lot of Bobo supporters think that just because we scored over 30 points per game that is enough to praise Bobo but we scored on some very bad defenses and should have gotten 45 point or more per game with the offensive skill players that we had . The most important statistic that I look at is ” TIME OF POSSESSION ” and we were beaten badly in all of our losses and I think in a few of our wins . That tells me Bobo did not have control of the game and the direction that we wanted to go. Your offense can not allow the defense to stay on the fields 3/4 of the game and not expect them to give up easy scores or to be man handled .

Dream on King. Why don’t you just try wishing for all the gold in Ft. Knox? You’d have that a hell of a lot sooner. Don’t look for UGA to bounce back as long as Richt hangs around. Therein lies the problem.

75-76-DAWG

December 1st, 2010

When our offense takes three plays to score or less than a minute or when Bobo go’s against what is working and the offense is three and out meaning we have to kick in less than two minutes then we lose “TIME of Possession” . A lot of you say that we scored over 30 points in most of our games and the losses are on Grantham and the defense and I will agree that Grantham needs a lot of improvement that we will see with the right recruits filling the defensive position but I do not want the SEC and UGA to turn into another BIG-12 where the average score is 50 to 42. That’s not SEC football and the main reason they have the high scores from both teams in the BIG-12 is because they only throw the ball or the average score only take a minute or two and to hell with any defense.
The offense has got to control the clock to motivate the defense to stop the other team, that’s why our defense at time look great but most of the times when the defense has looked the worst is when they stop someone and then the offense is three and out or has a turn over and the defense is right back our on the field.
SEC FOOTBALL IS TO HAVE A VERY GOOD OFFENSE BUT A DEVASTATING DEFENSE. But I don’t care how good your defense is if the offense can not control the clock and ‘TIME OF POSSESSION”
That’s why I criticize Bobo so much. He can’t grasp the big picture and see how the offense and defense has to work together and what it takes for him to do his part.
Again a lot of you will say that is CMR’s job and I will agree but to be a great coordinator you have got to think like and your actions have got to be what a head coach would do. Why do you think the great coordinators all become head coaches. And that is my point about why UGA shouldn’t have Bobo as a coordinator. He will never make it as a head coach because he can’t see the big picture.

You forgot about a decent defensive back coach and scheme. We are terrible. Countless times we have had no back even in camera view or 3-4 backs 5 yards off the receiver. Seems to me we basically don’t trust our players to cover man to man. Way too much loose zone coverage is killing us! Do less zone and rely on the safety when someone gets burned. And for god sack have someone coach these backs to act like a receiver. A simple turn and look stops alot of completions.

UGA’s defense was better than SEC’s #1 team this year Auburn’s–
UGA’s was ranked #49 in def scoring, Auburn #59

UGA’s offense was worse than SEC’s #1 team this year Auburn’s–
UGA’s was ranked #23 in off scoring, Auburn #5

Used to be, defense won SEC. Not anymore.

Now, as long as your defense in #60 or better in defensive scoring

As long as your offense is in the top 5 in offensive scoring

You can go 11-0 like Auburn did.

Georgia needs to fix that offense to win the SEC.

I agree with the astute observer who basically said he’s looking forward to Summer when everyone starts saying we have X players returning on defense, so we should be great. Horse hockey!!! We have two good returning defenders coming back next year (Boykin & Ogletree). If Jarvis plays for UGA like he did for USC, then we’ll have a good one. The rest you can send the packing. We don’t have a decent DL coming back next year. Tyson, Jones et. al. – none of them are dominating players, yet most of the guys were ranked very highly. That tells me it’s Garner’s lack of coaching ability and Van H.’s poor strength & conditioning program.

I also agree that “Hitman” Hamilton has been a JUCO bust for us. Hitman… he couldn’t hit a tissue paper.

I’m disappointed that Richt has come out so soon and stated he will not make any coaching changes. The only possible explanation is that he doesn’t want to disrupt recruiting.

Here we go again , everybody in DAWG land knew that Martinez needed to go three years before he was fired and most of us know that after 10 years with Richt and 4 years as offensive coordinator Bobo isn’t the answer but CMR will not look at thing objectively and evaluate Bobo on his merits and not because of friendship. With five young children there was no way CMR was going to do the right thing and demote Bobo or fire him

I do not agree with a lot of bobo’s play calling either but we averaged 34.2 points per game. The problem is defense. We actually got the special teams fixed. We covered a kickoff for the first time in years and we averaged 34.2 points per game. Any team that averages that many points per game should win them all or at the very least only lose 1 or 2. We lost 6. We can’t cover the flat, the outside, or the middle of the field. Not to mention we can’t contain the corner I am not sure if our defensive coordinator even knows what the edge is. DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE. Fix that and our strength and conditioning problem and we can turn it around. The problem is richt has one more year to fix this or he is fired period. Doesn’t matter if you agree he should be or not he will be. I am afraid he can’t turn it around because he will give the defensive coordinator one more year and he has not shown he has any idea how to slow anyone down much less stop anyone.

The UGA Sports Information Office should just admit that its main office is in the AJC. Let’s admit it. The AJC is the biggest newspaper in the South. Year after year they continue to tell the UGA faithful that the Dawgs have the following:

1) The Best Recruiting
2) The Best Coaching
3 The Best Facilities (although still the only SEC school along with Vandy without an indoor practice facility). Auburn has had one since 1977 and is about to build their 3rd rendition.
4) The best shot at “winning it all” year after year.

It has become a joke, really. If I were a UGA alum or fan, I would also be extremely disappointed year to year. UGA folks are “built up” so often that failure is bound to occur. Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, Arkansas and the rest DO NOT have to succumb to a major newspapers pronouncements yearly about “what is about to come”……..

My advice?? Take a pill. Do not allow the bloated information from the AJC to blur what happens to be reality. UGA is a fine institution with a solid football program. However, when the Auburn’s and Alabama’s and Florida’s are below the radar and seem to “come from nowhere” (oh, yeah. Let’s blame Cam Newton) then maybe UGA folks should begin to question where their “positive info” is generated.

Defense? Sure, Auburn’s was what, ranked #59 in defensive scoring? What a joke.

In the SEC, OFFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Auburn’s offense was ranked top 5 in scoring offense, defense was average in defensive scoring, that’s what Georgia needs, move up 18 spots there on scoring offense to crack the top 5, and you got yourself a 12-0 team.

Need to go from scoring 33 a game to 42 a game on offense.

BK’s top 5 is pretty much everyone’s top 5, good list.

While landing Crowell would be HUGE, fixing the strength and conditioning program is probably the top priority (see Kwame Geathers – good for one play, then has to rest for 3.) The average fan can see UGA getting manhandled every Saturday.

Don’t think our S&C program is not used against us with potential recruits! Imagine if we brought in a top NFL strength and conditioning coach, and expanded the S&C staff. Watch recruiting results improve.

Funny how no one is saying anything about the o-line coach – I guess it’s too popular to blame strength and conditioning. Can’t look at the d-line this year and blame it on anything but putting players in a bad situation – we didn’t and still don’t have a nose tackle. But the o-line – is your theory holds and it’s strength and conditioning, why aren’t we opening holes early in the game (or early in the season). Seems to me the o-line coach needs to go. One other thing – the toughest team in the SEC (Alabama) also “collapsed” to AU. Does their strength program need to go too? Just curious -

After what we saw on Saturday night, I don’t see how anybody can be optimistic about Grantham’s defense. Somebody at this paper wrote that it had been years since Grantham had coached against an option team, and he had to get familiar with it again. Great. $750,000 for on-the-job training.
The defense is still making fundamental errors. Brandon Smith needs to be taught to go through a block instead of trying to go around it when you are in open space. I’m pretty sure that skill is taught at the middle school level.

I have been talking about how we need a new version of a Mount Cody to plug in at noseguard, and the JUCO route is an excellent idea for that. Again, let’s give Grantham and the kids a second year to learn and tweak the 3-4, plus a chance to get in some of his own players. I posted before that Tom Jackson said this past weekend, when discussing an NFL defense, that it takes 2 years to fully implement and grasp the 3-4, and that is with pro athletes. I think some learning and adjusting on both Grantham’s and the players’ parts is to be expected. I say this having been quite disappointed with our defense this year, so TJ’s take did give me some hope for vast improvement next year.

Currently, whether it is because the 3-4 scheme is new, let’s face it Dawgs, OUR linebackers appear to be confused as where the ball is most of the time, as, do our corners and safeties. With a few exceptions this year, our linebackers rarely appear to be in position to make a good open field tackle. The case is still out on Coach Grantham”s 3-4.scheme. Too little pure stunting by LBs and Corners for my taste. GT exposed this to the max. and well as Fl.s running QB reed did as well. As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

3.) Reassigned locker room assignments.

3rd down efficienty and red zone performance was
the key to our ol’ coach Bazemore’s practice. Back

Someone said we need a fullback for next season, but I think we have the best FB possible already on the team — Orson Charles. Of course you wouldn’t use him the same way we’ve used traditional FBs. Line him up at FB, put him motion, move him in the slot, even give him some carries. We could effectively have 2 TEs and 2 WRs in the game all the time. We’d never have to send an extra reciever in for the FB on passing downs. Could greatly increase OCs touches and give defenses a big adjustment problem.

BK’s list of needs on this years team arguably would have put us in the SEC championship game. Would add to the list (as noted in the blog) a pair of big FB’s to replace the 2 we will lose this year. Two dominating OL to open holes for the RB we sorely need or the ones we’re left with. While we’re dreaming, why not a few cover corners that can tackle and take on the big receivers that have become the norm in college FB.

Lastly, I don’t think GA can take the big prize w/the current DC. He reminds me too much of CWM. Would be a shame to lose the best D players in the state and country to other colleges because of what they see and hear about Grantham. He saved the worst display of coaching for the last reg season game vs Tech. It was a shame to watch. yes, the S&C program at GA needs improvement but after 12 weeks of practicing and playing Saturdays in the SEC, etc, you’re going to get in shape. The reason players were gassed was (with few exceptions) grantham couldn’t figure out how to position his players and instead had them running all over the place. Whereas a guy like DC Diaz at Miss ST stopped them dead most of the time at the line of scrimmage. GA needs a new DC and someone to assist old coach Van. I doubt CMR will permanently relieve him.

We can hope for a dream team because if GA doesn’t get the right players to fill the gaps its going to be a very long season in muddville come 2011.

King was a senior this year, correct? Man, was he ever over rated ……………. like Ealey was. Both are small too and both are slow. These two badly hurt UGA early in the season. They are to blame for at least three of our early 4 losses.

Waushuan Ealey very likely will get in more trouble or simply flunk out. It I am correct, we have Boo Kenny Malcomb in the wings and some no name kids. We should have that iddy bitty Carlton Thomas back. He is small but he is slow. We will have FB Freddy Muzenmeir back ……… correct?

If I am right ………………..then UGA needs to sign two big time running backs. Seriously, we need two, like Alabama and AU and all of the other GOOD schools have. This area is UGA’s biggest concern and it is partially why we cannot attract great backs ………….. they are used only to block for the QB.

What ever happened to all those ‘Top 10′ recruiting classes you had? What makes you think that a significant coach would come to Athens and coach these thugs? What makes you think that a quality 5-star athlete would come to Athens?

You beat GT because their kicker missed an extra point. GT kicked you guys all over the field. What was it, 500+ yards of total offense by a team that you ridicule as having a high school offense. You did nothing to stop it, and if it weren’t for the fumbles deep in GT territory, you would have lost that game.

My wish list;

It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Typical UGA fans. No “nice game”. No “good luck in your bowl game”. No “Paul Johnson really gets you guys ready to play against us”.

Are there any good sports at UGA? Are there any true sports fans who love the game at UGA? Or are you all just a bunch of name callers and mud slingers? Seriously, if I was a UGA alumni, which I doubt most of you are, I’d be a bit embarrassed.

For the record, most UGA alumni I know are well educated sports fans, who win and lose with class. But the non-alumni hangers-on… well, that’s another story.

No more Sunday School praying for a win. Line the dadgum team up and get the heck after it and strap it on and play some dang football. Knock the you know what out of people on defense a la Greg Blue, Tony Gilbert, and Thomas Davis. Run over people on the way to the end zone a la Herschel and Knowshon. Mike Bobo turn Aaron Murray loose-he is quite possibly the best quarterback we have ever had-don’t be like Dean Smith a la stopping Michael Jordan. Find leadership like David Greene and David Pollack. That’s all.

I was cheated. All I got from UGA was a new Trans Am.

Okay, they gave me “gas money” too. ;-)
