Justin Houston is drawing NFL draft attention, but generally Georgia's talent level on defense is down. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Some bye-week discussion points. …
The drop-off in talent for the Bulldogs, particularly on defense, has been the subject of several discussions of late on Sunday’s “Bulldog Brunch,” and The Macon Telegraph provides some context by noting that during Mark Richt’s first five years, when the Dogs were 52-13 and won two SEC titles, Georgia had 32 players drafted by the NFL, 15 in the top three rounds, while in the past five years, with a 42-20 record, only 15 players have been drafted, five in the top three rounds. On the current team, only juniors A.J. Green and Justin Houston are considered first- or second-round picks, if they enter the draft. Senior offensive lineman Clint Boling is seen as the next most draftable player, but as a late fourth- or early fifth-round pick. The drop-off has been especially hurtful on defense. Do you agree that Georgia’s talent level right now is pretty mediocre?
Speaking of which, I’m inclined to agree with Buck Belue, who thinks Todd Grantham and Rodney Garner should be putting a big push on landing some JUCO talent, especially for Georgia’s woefully undersized defensive line. Immediate help is needed next year, and junior college players seem the best way to get it. …
Along those lines, I’ve heard more than one fan make the case (which I don’t buy) for dumping Richt now by noting that with the possible loss of Green and Houston the Dogs’ prospects for next season don’t look too promising. But a piece on Saturday Down South actually tries to make the case that Georgia will win the SEC East in 2011. Among the reasons cited are the schedule, which will include seven home games and a weak-sister SEC West lineup of the Mississippi schools, an open date before the Florida game, most of the talent back on the offensive team (haven’t we heard that one before?), the maturation of Aaron Murray, Grantham’s defensive troops having a year under their belts in his system, the kicking game, and Richt’s obvious need to turn things around. I think the writer downplays the likely loss of Green a bit too much, but it’s nice to hear an optimistic forecast for a change. …
Talk of a possible “Blackout” for the upcoming Tech game is beginning to circulate on fan sites. I’m inclined to think it’s too soon to pull out the black jerseys again, no matter how sharp-looking they are, but I can understand the rationale behind wanting to get the crowd more involved in this make-or-break final home game. What do you think?
Lastly, if you look up “mealy-mouthed” in the dictionary, you’ll find something like this: “avoiding the use of direct and plain language, as from timidity, excessive delicacy, or hypocrisy; inclined to mince words; insincere, devious, or compromising.” Which pretty much sums up Auburn coach Gene Chizik’s response when asked on this week’s SEC coaches teleconference about criticisms that Nick Fairley is a dirty player.
“I don’t know how people refer to him,” Chizik said. “I’m not really sure exactly what you’re talking about, but certainly no one teaches that. He’s a very try-hard guy. He plays with great effort, great passion for the game. And certainly nobody would have any intent to do anything other than the right things in any game.”

I think the blackout idea is horrible. I’m sick to death of Richt and his gimmicks. What I want is for the team to play hard-nosed football for four quarters.

This team needs to earn the black jerseys, and they haven’t done and cannot do anything this year to earn them, IMO. Maybe next year if they win the East or beat Florida they can pull them out, but until then, please, no. Just ask Georgia Tech and Florida how well playing around with uniforms worked for them this year.

Bill, I think Buck is right, we need to go out and get some JUCO players to bridge the gap of the transition between a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense. We have some players in place right now that are good fits but what we truly lack is the big physical road-grating nose. Tyson and Tripp have done admirable jobs but if we could go out and bring in a juco player in the mold of a Terrance Cody or an unblockable type like Fairley (without the dirty play of course) then Tripp and Tyson could move to end where they should be in a 3-4, and Dobbs could be moved to LB where he’s better suited in this scheme.
Otherwise it will be at least 2 yrs before Granthum can get what he needs in house and developed. Don’t really see any choice BUT to get some JUCOs

I like the black jerseys and would like to see them a couple of times a year as a change of pace look…but NOT as a gimmick. Don’t make it a blackout…just wear them! I don’t even think you have to announce it. Against Alabama, it became way too big of a distraction once it was announced. The black jerseys did NOT lose that game for us, however. Let’s downplay the significance but keep them around because they really do look good!

Forget the JUCO players – UGA coaches need to be on the phone to EVERY, SINGLE, Auburn commit and let them know the axe is about to drop on their program.
“Son, do you want to spend your time at college never, ever getting the chance to play for in a bowl game?”
Auburn’s inevitable probation is a good thing for UGA.

The jersey’s worn have NOTHING to do with the way the team plays! I agree “hard nose football” is what is needed, but some of you all get overly excited over jersey’s. Oregon has about 10 different uni’s. I can promise you that they can play in whatever color they feel like wearing. I like the Red jersey/silver britches, but the black jersey’s look great! Maybe the players are the one’s who want to wear them. CMR has often allowed the seniors to pick something different each year. That is fine, because he is showing his appreciation towards those young men choosing UGA. It’s really not a big deal. I know my son loves the black jersey’s! They are very sharp! CMR realizes that a jersey color doesn’t make a team play better or worse. Also, when has CMR ever said that “we want to try a gimmick and wear a different color jersey”. We have many other things to worry about on this team. Again, the jersey does not make a team win or lose! They will look great at night! Go Dawgs!

There is no way the DAWG’s would do a black-out. I think they learned there lesson with the Alabama game. As mentioned before, a team needs to earn things like that and this team and coach would admit they have earned nothing this year. I will give them credit for sticking together through all the turmoil when most teams would crumble. But nothing makes up for the miserable talent on Defense and the lack of a quality O-line. Maybe Aaron Murray will come out in the Black jersey, as he has been the most impressive.

DO THE BLACKOUT!!!
You people need to get over yourselves and your selfish views of UGA football. You can sit here and act like we lost the Bama game in 08′ because we “wore black”. You fail to realize we were the first team who really got a taste of how good Bama was that year. Last year against Florida, while the uni choice itself was rather odd, who cares. We were NEVER even suppose to score on that Florida team last year.
We fail to remember sometimes that UGA football is about the PLAYERS first. These are 18-21 year old kids who are having their glory days. If they want to switch it up, and wear a special jersey, they have the right do so WAY before Bubba from the hills (aka the typical UGA blogger) says it’s a “gimmick”.
Tell me this….had we squeaked out wins against Bama in 08′ and Florida last year, would you same selfish people even use the word “gimmick”, or would you be more inclined to say Richt is a “mentality genious”……..
If the KIDS want to wear black….. WEAR THE BLACK!!!! I look forward to it!!!

What makes it a gimmick is we announce ahead of time its a “blackout”. All the fans are encouraged to wear black…the players start making comments about it…the other team makes comments about it…the coaches make comments about it….and our players AND coaches become distracted from the football game we need to focus on. Much like the Falcons wore their throwback black jerseys last week, just do it. Don’t announce it or make it more than it is. I love the look, but its just a jersey…no more, no less.

Recruit athletes who are big and fast and grow them into space eaters. Don’t get sucked into ht/wt of a high school senior. Recruit the speed and the frame and build the player into the position. Otherwise you have space eaters who are too slow to get into the backfield and are easily checked at the line.

Retired UGA alum here. Spent 33+ years in marketing and sales and ran international sales organization at retirement. I know what it takes to run a successful organization. Football or business. It starts at the very top. The 2010 Summer of Fun was not it. The AJG clothing sale was not it. The helmet thing was not it. The driving school taught by W Ealey was not it. The drunk driving classes taught by T King and others was not it.
Now …………..we all have numbers that we are responsible for. Richt has been responsible for making UGA a competitive squad with his reruiting numbers. Did that well in his first five years. Lately?? Look at the above numbers. No, he is not responsible for finding NFL caliber kids. No. I cannot stand the NFL with thugs like Ray Lewis and Vick and all the others.
Richt IS responsible for his won/loss record and if that is due to not recruiting top notch kids ……….. then he needs to walk. 5 years for this? 5-6??? Come on gang.
Folks ……………come this same time next year …………….we will be screaming for his head because his classes the last 3 or 4 years are lousy. Marlon Brown is on example. Highly thought of in HS but then he has done NOTHING and so it goes. Look at now departed Montrez Robinson of Indiana. Bye Bye he is.
Richt has not managed his numbers. He needs to leave or be fired.

UGA is about tradition
If these kids dont like wearing the red uniforms and just cant get motivated go play somewhere else
Thats one of the problems with this staff and team, we have to bribe them to motivate them to play
And we wonder why we lead in player arrests and beat downs to teams we shouldnt lose to

I would be amazed if Georgia wins the SEC East in 2011. First, Florida is bound to be better than they were this year, and Richt can’t beat Florida. Second, there’s very little to indicate that Georgia will be a better-coached, better-conditioned team or that the talent will be upgraded. Finally, South Carolina will probably be about the same and Tennessee almost certainly will be a better team. We’ve folded like wet blankets the last two times we’ve gone to Knoxville, not sure why ‘11 will be any different.

@MatthewsDawg…i agree the black-out jerseys has absolutely nothing to do with what happens on the field..what i think it does is it honors the Seniors for there years of hard work, doesn’t matter what the record is, these guys work their rear ends off and if they want and vote as a team to wear them then i see no harm…Once the game kicks off it doesn’t matter what jersey you have on, and the players know that. It does add some excitement to the pre-game atmosphere and my son and his friends like yours loves the black jerseys. Personally, i’m from the old school and prefer the Red home jerseys…I think way too much has been made of the jerseys, they certainly have not had any impact on the games we have won or lost with them..What it does, though, if we wear them and lose, then the media and all the dawg bashers will have a field day at our expense. Still, it should be left up to the team and our coaches, and if we do, i’ll be there in black, if not i’ll wear my red colors…What will matter is our defense shutting down Tech’s offense and our offense play as they have lately…go dawgs

I definitely think our talent level is down on defense. That’s what’s going to handicap Grantham’s bid to build one of the nation’s top defenses, which is what Richt needs to get back to the top. If they don’t get immediate help somewhere, Grantham will have to prove he can do more with less. Or else the grumbling at the end of next season will be intense. Even if they pull in a great defensive class this signing year, without JUCO talent the reality is we won’t see the benefits until 2012.

Cam’s 13 traffic violations, and even (GASP!) Tim Tebow’s multiple traffic violations were wiped off the books in Gainesville and never made it to the media.
Athens-Clarke Co PD are truly one of the only local PD’s, when it comes to college towns, that aren’t in the pocket of the school. 18-22 year-olds get into crap no matter where they are, it just only seems to get blown up in the media here. I was thinking about uniforms the other day. Few elite programs use their uniforms, including helmet stickers, as motivating tools. Alabama doesn’t mess with its uniforms. It prepares the players to play the game without distractions. Penn State, same thing, USC, Oklahoma, Nebraska, ditto. They don’t need to make fashion statements. Florida (they mix’em up) and Ohio State (helmet stickers) I guess are the exceptions to this, but most of your elite programs don’t muck with tradition. That Georgia is so willing to do so seems an acknowledgement that is not a “destination” program that players automatically want to sign with. If they need stickers and different uniforms to keep the motivated, how good are they, really?

The talent level is down. We can’t attract the top players and we don’t seem to sign what we really need. When Richt first took over, those were Donnans’ recruits and they were very talented. Now we see Garners’ and Richts’ recruits and without great coaching the talwnt level is down big time. Also, we don’t put some players in the right position. After the Auburn game, I hope Garner and Richt sees that this team is weak a plays like a bunch of girls. They don’t look to be in good shape and they are not physical. We don’t play ball like the real Ga. Dawgs. Richt needs to be tougher and demand more out of the staff and the players and stop making excuses for everything. Garners recruiting sucks and no one else on the staff knows how to recruit. All of them need to take a training class from Jimmy Johnson.

I did not play football but I did play college baseball then went on to Single A baseball
I know when a coach does not have the players respect,
Richt can run his team with the current demeanor he uses, I never said he couldnt.
The problem is when you have players dancing on the field i.e. last yrs Arizona St game when we were in the first half and up by only a few points shows me this team is not seriously into the game add the arrests, and a plethora of stupid personal foul penalties, and one of the worst ranked teams in committed penalties that falls directly back on the coach.

The alternate jerseys are lame. You guys can certainly agree. Look at us with our blue jerseys…last 2 games wearing them we have scored like 17 pts. total vs. Miami and LSU. Ditch them and wear traditional colors. Gold vs. red would be my preference.

Not blaming local law enforcement for those arrests. Those were stupid things done by stupid kids and in every case, they were punished accordingly. My statements aren’t as much shining negative light on the Athens PD, as it is pointing out that other schools have some of these very issues swept under the rug, or go unpunished.
Just going off some of your examples:
Robert Hall at Tech beat up his girlfriend – 1 game suspension
Montez Robinson (UGA) assaulted a female – GONE
Cam Newton (while at Florida) – driving w/ susp license – unpunished by Gainseville PD and Univ of Florida
Same action is a minimum 1 game susp at UGA (becuase ours always make it out to the public)
Darius Dewberry destoryed hospital property (a parking lot entry-arm) after a downtown fight. Dew volunteered with the night security at the hospital for a few months (after class in the morning and practice) until his debt was paid off and (if memory serves) was susp at least 2 games.
Tennessee has had mulitple players serve NO suspensions after altercations in downtown Knoxville this season.
I’m not trying to argue with you, I’m just bringing up facts. Bad deeds do not go unpunished at UGA, I can’t say the same for some other schools in the southeast.

AGreed with Sanford Drive. Black is one of our COLORS. No one gets on Oregon for changing their uni’s up 235 times, or Florida for wearing blue vs. orange vs. white, or SC for wearing all maroon or half maroon or whatever.
Don’t forget the games we WON with the black jerseys either. They look good and are part of the team colors. Get over it already. It should be cool whether we wear black or red and not considered a gimmick.

I’ve heard of two stories, independent of each other, where members of the training profession with knowledge of our football program have specifically pointed to Coach Van Hallenger as a huge problem for the Bulldogs. Both stated that, unlike other SEC powerhouses, we are dropping the ball in our training regimen. One trainer stated that the Georgia players are left too much on their own, without accountability and without guidance. Other schools are focusing on nutritional improvement as well as the training techniques. The other trainer, who has since left Athens, stated that many of our past injury problems can be tied to our antiquated strength and conditioning program. It’s reported that our coach does not keep up with the latest and greatest, and this is part of Georgia’s problem compared to Florida, LSU, Alabama, etc…. Two separate stories, from 2 sources, saying the same thing!! Maybe this explains in part why our offensive line and our defense have not developed compared to the rankings of our past recruiting classes……..

If a “gimmick” works, the coach is a motivational genius; if it fails, he is an idiot who can’t really coach. Whatever. If King doesn’t fumble at the goal line against Colorado, if Ealey doesn’t fumble against SC putting the game out of reach, if young Murray doesn’t throw the late interceptions against Arkansas or Florida… Honestly, people. Football is a GAME! You can’t predict every outcome, and sometimes you get the lucky break, sometimes you’re the victim of the other guy’s lucky break…
The bottom line is that Richt has been and will continue to be a winner. We’ll be back every single year as competitive in the SEC and in the nation. Murray is going to be agreat QB, and Grantham’s defense will get better and better. Quit armchair coaching, get a life, and let the professionals do their jobs.

Agreed FaithfulDawg86. If Tony Wilson hangs onto the ball in ‘07 at the goalline against South Carolina, then we win that game and are potentially in the NC debate. You can coach a kid all week, but if he has a mental bust on game day, that isn’t on the coach. King’s fumble, Ealey’s fumbles (this year and against KY last year), interceptions thrown…..these things are on the players.
I really feel like if we can get Grantham some lineman to fit this 3-4 scheme, that we can be a much improved team next year…..with the same coaching staff. Why? Because players make plays.

The AU-UGA game was 5 days ago and Bill is still going on about Fairley? He should take a leaf out of the book of most of the posters on his blog and move on.
I don’t understand why UGA would need black jerseys for motivation against GT. If needing a win to go to a bowl, on Senior Day against your in-state rival no less, isn’t enough motivation nothing is. Perhaps Richt just wants to bury the black jerseys after a win rather than a loss – I’d be surprised if GT won.

Maybe someone needs to ask CGC more direct questions so that it can be perfectly clear to him and not get a lot of mere rhethoric in return. Like, it has been largely spoken about the blatant late hit on QB Murray by Fairley. Many people feel that this was deliberate and intentionally meant to injure the UGA QB on a play that went well beyond any resonable time to make a hit on him. Did anyone with AU tell Fairley to hit the QB and try to take him out even if it would involve a personal foul?

Let’s not get too optimistic about next year just yet. I will agree that next year is a perfect schedule to win it all in the east but UGA didn’t come close to stopping Lattimore this year and he will be more of a handful next year. As great of a coach as Spurrier is you don’t want him to start dominating the east like he did when he was at Florida. The reason SC has been kept at bay up until now is because the state of South Carolina is small and doesn’t have near the high school pool to chose from.
As much as I like CMR he is an amateur compared with Spurrier. As much as you don’t like his personality he is a results driven coach and I don’t think anyone who has followed Spurrier over the years would dispute that if he was at UGA we would have twice the SEC championships and at least one national title if not two in the last ten years.

ole island dawg, Garner ain’t the problem at all. He’s put his share of players in the NFL, including three DTs just last year (2 starters and a backup, that’s pretty impressive). He’ll develop more talent at his position.
We need help on the DL, but also at LB. On those spread offense rushing plays that keep gashing us, you’d like to see more tackles coming from your front 7 and less reliance on your safeties (who are typically in coverage) to stop the run. Maybe Jarvis Jones can become what Rennie Curran was for us. And hey, you’d also like to have some lock down corners so you can play more one on one and position your defense for better run support.
Across the board we need to find and/or develop some talent. Just hope we’ve got some young guys coming along who can fill those holes next year.

Richt won with Donnans’ players the 1st few years. Unfortunately, that early success has not translated into a continuation of recruiting top level talent. This would indicate that the program is in a downward cycle with no end in site. I hope I am wrong, but I have seen this pattern time and again especially with high school coaches where a mediocre coach follows a highly successful one. The win/loss ratio continues to go negative. Maybe this has something to do with Donnan being the better “judge” of talent than Richt. Thomas Davis for example, was not highly recruited.

Most of the AJC bloggers have been blaming the coaching staff. I’ve been saying all along that the talent on the defense has not been what it has been since BVG days. Not that the coaching is blameless. I think that many fans have seen a talent rating by the services and drawn the conclusion that the recruiting class must all be at that level. That is not the case. A few good players can bring the rating up but that does not necessarily mean that all the others are of that caliber. UGA has had some success at qb and receivers but the rest of the slots on the team have turned out to be mediocre at best, hence the decline in the overall performance. DAWGS need to redouble efforts in recruiting on defense. If you can hold your opponent to no score or field goals then you have a great shot at beating them. As it stands, UGA has such a weak defense that its opponents have pretty much been able to score at will. The offense has actually played at a fairly high caliber once Murray gained some experience. The defense has lost most of the games.

The black jerseys look too good not to bring them out occasionally……just don’t make that big of a deal about it. Lot’s of teams have multiple uniform combinations…..surprise me!
As for the talent level, we are middle of the pack in the SEC, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The results the past two seasons should not really be surprising to anyone. How many times from 2002-2007 did we all leave UGA games after a win, when it felt like a loss? We were playing teams with a fraction of our talent and squeezing by far too many times. Now that our talent has dropped off a bit, the other teams are squeezing by us. The bottom line is, for us to beat someone, we must have far better talent. If the talent level is close, we lose! That is coaching. And as much as Bobo takes heat, generally speaking, our problem (the last couple of years) has been on the defensive side of the ball. When I look at the points we put up last year with Joe Cox at QB, it blows my mind. How did we score all of those points in the SEC with a 1st year starter that should have been playing for Valdosta State? Now we are on our longest SEC run of 30+ points per game in the history of UGA football with a freshman that none of us thought would be starting after the G-Day game last year.

There is no way to know what years we would have won SEC or national championships if Spurrier had been our coach, we probably wouldn’t have even recruited Stafford unless because his sister was at UGA on scholarship the Stafford’s came to our coach in the first place. What I am talking about is with our talent pool much bigger than South Carolina and Spurriers connections in Florida we would have had signed even better players and Spurrier wouldn’t have even considered Martinez for a second as any coach let alone defensive coordinator. Also, at best Bobo would be a regular coach and certainly not offensive coordinator. Spurrier doesn’t get personally involved with his coaches and UGA would not be in the mess they are in right now. If a coach or coordinator needs to be replaced Spurrier would do it in a second. I read not to long ago that Spurrier is on his third offensive or defensive coordinator in as many years . I don’t know if it was offensive or defensive coordinator but the point is Spurrier does not let personal feeling stand in his way to be the best coach possible. He is only result oriented and make no mistake he is calling the shots on defense and offense not his coordinators. He only believes in delegating control to the coordinator to a degree which is the way you keep control of your team and respect of your players. I can assure you everybody on SC team including the coaches have a degree of fear when they are around Spurrier because he will not patronize anyone , he tells you the way it is and is going to be, period.

Why is it that Coach Gardner is suddenly a big problem? For years we have had nothing but accolades for the man pertaining to his recruiting prowess. I remember how excited everyone was we he came over from Tennnesse. He has done a great job. Is our talent level that bad right now? I think that we do have the athletic talent to take our place at the head of the SEC. I just wish we had the fans that would not try to jump off the wagon every time we hit a hole in the road. I hear all of this complaining about the mediocraty of the defensive line. At nose guard we have a red shirt fressman, Gather @ 6′6″, 325. He has been injured and has not played much. He is only going to grow and get better. The starter , Tyson who is a junior is 6′2′ @ 290. Now I will agree that improvement can be made, possibly moving him to end. Presently at ends you have Dobbs and Jones. Dobbs is a 6′2″, 285 lb Senior. His back-up is Tripp who is 6″6 293 Senior. I think both of these guys have done well. At left end you have Jones, 6′4″ @ 297. He is a true sophmore. Jones is another one who has played well. He is only going to get bigger and better. His back ups are wood and Smith. Wood is a Senior and Smith is a freshman. I see a defensive line that is going to be very strong. A lot of people think that if a defensive lineman is not making sacks, he is not perfoming. Watch the stunts that a defensive lineman has to do, especially in a 3-4. The majority of the time the linebackers should be making the tackle. Come on dawg fans wake up, look up, not down.

I’m with Ed (the original) on this: Wear throwback silver helmets and silver britches ala ’50s and pre-Dooley ’60s. No stickers or names on jerseys. It would be inspirational for those of us who learned to drive in cars without turn signals.
The single-bar facemasks won’t cut it, though. My crooked beak is evidence of that.

I thought, after the last Blackout, Richt said that we wouldn’t see any more of this crap unless we got to the Dome. Which to me, means that we won’t see any more uniform gimmicks for the rest of Mark Richt’s tenure, unless by some heavenly magic, we make the Peach/Chik-Fil-A Bowl next year. This crap has BEEN old. If we do this, there goes the last ounce of respect I have for CMR as a coach. Or, do whatever, who cares?

Don’t look for defense to improve much next year because of lack of talent on D line, Too small to handle huge offensive lines in SEC, Even with a good class of recruits it will take a couple of years to make a difference, I’m not sure Richt can survive another six win season, Great offense and no defence, Sounds like one of those Fla schools.

I am trying to understand this. There are some people who think Coach Richt needs to go now because he may win the SEC East next year and obviously that creates an even greater dilema in that he may then win the SEC and an even more frightful thought that we would then be in line for a very high ranking or even more. I guess we now have a better perspective of the intellectual ability of some of your readers.

Until they get a dominate NG they may not be championship caliber, but they certainly will improve next year. If for no other reason, the DB and LB doing what they are supposed to be doing would take some of the pressure off. Even this group of DL can improve, even if its only to a point.
Improvement in year 2 of doing anything is a universally accepted expectation.

With the players we are returning, I believe we’ve got a good shot of playing for the SEC title next year based on the facts that were pointed out, plus the recruits that will plug into holes. Four returning starters on the oline, qb returning, rbs returning, and enough quality receivers returning. We need a nose tackle to step up and I think Kwame Geathers is the man to do it. Rambo will continue to improve and Ogletree will be a monster soon in the secondary!

John, I had hope three years ago CMR could tweak the program and get things righted. Even this year I had hope, returning the entire offense except Murray. He’s been the brightest star of the bunch. CMR and his staff are “pathetic”, everyone else knows it except you “blind” “kool aid drinking”, I will just leave it at that. I’ve lost total respect for Coach’s ability, we are indeed a “ship without a rudder”.
The other teams fans on our blogs are right, every year a major faction of this fan base proclaims “championships”, and we get worse. What will it take to open your eyes.

Why? We’ve lost more games wearing white or red than we have black.
Jersey color don’t matter, if they want to wear black, just come out in the black

Please… NO MORE GIMMICKS, RICHT. NO MORE black jerseys and black helmets. And Bill, your defense of Richt is ludicrous! Wait and find out how bad 2011 may be. How much longer before the UGA Brass says enough mediocrity is enough? Dooley won almost every year against Florida with lesser talent and Richt loses almost every year to the Gators despite him almost always having more talent. Richt seems to manage to lose 2-3 games every year he should win. 2010 has to be his worst coaching job by far. The play calling doesn’t seem to ever consider game circumstances or take clock and field position into consideration. I’d find a whole new offensive staff because these guys are as inefficient and as poor a bunch of teachers as the defensive people Richt fired last year.

Ignore your OWN TEAM coming onto the field, which SHOULD have been a penalty. Ignore the FACT that Nick Fairley was OBVIOUSLY blocked into the qb when he got hurt. Ignore the fact that even though YOU CLOWNS say Nick Fairley took cheap shots at the qb, OBVIOUSLY HE DIDN’T, since he only got the ONE penalty and ONLY has TWO for the entire year. 2011 optimism. Experience. I have been following UGA for 35 years and next year we will have more experience than I can remember, especially if Jones and Glenn decide to stay. BTW, the NFL draft sites I look at have Jones around 5 as far a Centers go in this draft. I’d say that’s pretty high.
WR’s – Seniors – Troupe, Gray
Juniors – Wooten, T. King, Brown
Hybrids – White – Sr.
Charles – Jr.
TE’s – Figgins – Sr.
Lynch – Jr.
RB’s – Caleb – Sr.
Ealey – Jr.
Thomas – Jr.
QB – Murray – So
Mason – So
LeMay – Fr.
OL – Seniors – Sturdivant, Glenn, Jones, and Strickland – with 2 or 3 of those All SEC types, with Harmon as a Jr. and 6 talented Sophomores behind that.
On D, we have Tyson a Senior, Jones a Jr., with Bean, and 4 very talented Sophomores on the Line.
At LB, besides Samuel and Jarvis, we have a couple of Jrs. (and depending on where Nick Williams ends up), and some talented So’s and Rsh. Fr..
Secondary: You have 3 Srs and 4 Jrs. who have had significant playing time, and some talent behind that.
And if Walsh and Butler return, 2 Seniors there.
This will be the most experienced Offense I can remember, but not the most talented. The Defense will be younger, but a lot of young guys have played this year, so we have some experience there. Could be a good year!
My biggest concerns for next season – We need a great WR, and 2 shutdown CB’s behind Boykin and Branden. Man, what a team if we had those pieces!

A few observations about posters.
Ever notice that someone who has to tell you his qualifications on how smart he is and how much experience he has, all the organizations he has run, all the money he has made, always writes opinions that are more stupid than the stuff that St. Simons guy writes?
Ever notice that people who claim that an offense that scores over 30 points vs SEC defenses needs better coaching wouldn’t know a flea flicker from a toss sweep?
And have you ever noticed the guys in the white get up with the nets that always seem to be chasing those who think the color of a shirt or helmet lost a ball game?
Why is it that people who mention chop blocks wouldn’t know what one was if the players doing it had bells around their necks?
Ever notice that 99% of the people who are fans of one team, yet just have to post on another teams page are morons? Of all things there are a couple of GATORS here that are good folks. Can’t say the same for Auburn.

Simply put, we are not winning the recruiting war in the state of Georgia. There are just too many very talenteddefensive players that choose to leave Georgia. Until we fix this we’ll have a mediocre defense requiring UGA to score 40 points to win. We used to get the best in state talent and were also able to go and pick up great talent like Goldberg and Hoage from elsewhere!!

I think next year’s prospects are pretty good. Let’s face it. AJ and Houston are going pro. The Dawgs will lose Boiling, Chapas, Cuff, Durham, and maybe a couple more to graduation/eligibility. These are some big losses of key players. I think we forget what a young team UGA has fielded, though. There are plenty of younger guys stepping up and getting experience this year. Everyone else will be bigger, faster, stronger. Grantham’s scheme will be a little more set in, and Murray will start the season with the whole play book. The schedule is lighter in the West again, and there is a bye before UF.

I think we should “black out” the last home game every year, essentially Auburn or Tech. For two reasons: #1: It’s a tribute to the seniors, etc. and #2: These are usually both big games, regardless of the teams’ records. It just adds a little more school pride.
This way it doesn’t become a “gimmick” and we don’t sit around arguing about what the heck we want to wear to a football game. We sound like a bunch of women.
I don’t care if UGA wears black jerseys or not. That’s their call.

Why not just go out and “buy” Cam Newton……put him in the backfield with Murray and have two players that can run or throw…..we would score 80+ points every game and not have to work about the defense. Seriously, it sure is gonna suck being an Auburn fan and having your entire season erased for playing an ineligible player……if the NCAA tagged AJ for 4 games for selling a jersey for $1,000, I would certianly hope they would do much more to Cam…..sorry Tigers, your boy Cam may be in the NFL without ever playing a NCAA recognized down for AU.

No doubt in my mind that we have seen a talent drop off over last few years, especially across O line and D line… AND this years class is not looking that strong on the D either.
We have 2 commitments from D linemen Bailey and Mayes (295 & 260 lbs.)
Also loosing 3 starters at LB and have only 1 commitment for this years class.
AJ is great no doubt, but I feel like our O can be better next year with a years experience at QB and only loosing 2 linemen on off our two deep charts and I hope they hit the weights hard in off season… Backs returning and hopefully some help from a Freshman (IC)… We dont have another up and comming AJ but we do have other receivers that can step it up and 3 commitments…
Our D however… I just dont see it improving next year with the talent we have comming up and we dont seem to have much focus in this in our recruiting. Gotta have some studs!!

OMG, as an AU fan in GA for 40+ years, I can say the only thing more obnoxious than a UGA fan when he wins, is one after he loses!
Facts:
Second or third play of the game, BOTH teams hit with offsetting Personal Fouls.
Second quarter, Fairley drives Murray to the ground, a LEGAL PLAY in college
Second quarter, UGA line chop blocks Fairly, penalized
Later, Fairley hits Murray late, also penalized
Late in the game, Fairley is blocked, goes down, hits Murray in the knee, Murray leaves game
Next play, AFTER THE Whistle, UGA lineman dives into Fairley’s back while Fairley is on the ground, starting the fights where, for some reason, only AU players are ejected while the whole UGA team comes on the field.
Face it, BOTH teams played dirty! I’m sorry Murray is taking so long to heal and hope he’s ready for Tech, but Fairley WAS penalized for the illegal hit, and everything else is legit! And he’s been nominated for the national Nagurski award for Outstanding Defensive player, AFTER this game! That would not have come if his play was too dirty!
Think about the holding the blackout until next year, we’re looking forward to it.

as far as a blackout… yeah ok. if the kids want to do it, i say go ahead. the black jerseys look better than some of the butt-ugly combinations that donnan’s teams used to wear (and that black stripe down the middle of the helmet was ghastly). people who think “real” programs don’t fiddle with uniforms are wrong: ohio state wore throwbacks last year against michigan. florida has several combinations. even alabama is rumored to have some “special” uniforms for the auburn game. per a couple of other posts, i’d actually like to see us bring back the silver helmets w/ the red G that we used wear.

Take your heads out of the sand and accept it now- I’ve already accepted that Nick Fairley and Cammy Cam are gone.

Chazzo: when is Georgia going to stop using the excuse “we are a young team”? I would have to say 10 of 11 starters on offense this season does NOT constitute Georgia as being a “young team”. That unfortuneatly, has become an old worn out excuse for not winning, and not getting the job done on the field. It is sad for me to witness the decline of this program in the last 3 years. Georgia was, at one time recently, among the nation’s elite teams. Now we are just another mediocre team. Book, Chapter & Verse.

Anybody who thinks Fairly isn’t a dirty player I have some real estate in Florida to sell you.
Only the blindest of Auburn homers would believe that. When your guy basically picks up the other teams QB with the direct intent of driving him to the ground and hurting him. Fairly has been doing that all year. He is a dirty player pure and simple. He is intentionally trying to hurt the other players.
I don’t think UGA was doing that at first but you can only take so much before you have to retaliate.

I would say if the Seniors want a Blackout then give it to them. However i would make one recomendation. Make it a true blackout. Black helmets, black pants, black jerseys. That would look very intimidating to anyone lining up against it. Anyone who has played NCAA 11 knows what that would look like (as they give you that option).

Nobody was complaining when we wear the BLACK JERSEY and beat Auburn’s butt a few years ago! And we need a BIG JC nosetackle to anchor the D!

I suggest selling the black jerseys on eBay. Then, set the money aside for bail money and fines for the 2011 year.

Bama Dawg: I agree nobody complained when they beat Auburn in the original “blackout” game. Then they wore them in the Sugar Bowl against Hawaii, and played great. They should have RETIRED them after that. Plain and simply put-gimmicks are great when you win, but make you look like complete idiots when you don’t. Case in point-the ‘08 Bama game. While I agree with most of the opinions posted that believe the color of a uniform doesn’t/shouldn’t make any difference as to who win, or loses a game, I remember in ‘80 when Auburn played Georgia with ORANGE jerseys and ended up having their heads handed to them. Auburn has since NEVER worn them again! If you look at most of the sucessful teams out there (Alabama, Texas, USC, Penn St) they ALWAYS wear traditional uniforms-they don’t deviate from them. Maybe that’s why they win more than we do!

This is one GA/Tech game I just can’t get excited about. It reminds me of a middle aged midget arm wrestling with another middle aged midget. So where is the excitement, fun, and suspense of the outcome? It is anti-climactic, that is what it is. I wouldn’t bet $2 on this one. Black jerseys won’t work, a night game won’t work either. I will probably take a nap at the end of the first quarter. Yes, I CAN wait till next year.
