Gene Chizik, getting a Gatorade bath from Cam Newton and other AU players, has taken the "friendly" out of the rivalry with UGA. (Associated Press)
Auburn looks like the SEC’s best shot at having a team in this year’s BCS championship game, which also would help the conference’s chances of getting two teams into BCS bowls. And that translates to a lot of dollars for the conference.
Nick Fairley is a big part of Auburn’s success on the field.
So should anyone really be surprised that the SEC chose not to suggest Auburn suspend its defensive headhunter for the blatant spearing in the back that was only the most egregious of several late hits he delivered to Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray?
Instead, the conference is handling the matter “internally with the institution.” That means any disciplinary action is up to Gene Chizik, the same guy who during the fracas at the end of the game with the Dogs was stirring it up on the sideline and allowing Fairley and one of his assistant coaches to dance in celebration on the field.
Asked by The Macon Telegraph what he thought of the conference’s inaction on the matter, UGA athletic director Greg McGarity said, “I probably better not comment on that. I need to stay away from that. I don’t want to get into any type of trouble or conflict with the conference office.”
Which is a diplomatic way of saying he thought the conference blew it.
I’ll say one thing for Chizik: He’s changed a lot of UGA fans’ view of the so-called friendly rivalry between Georgia and Auburn, as Darrell Huckaby notes on the Dawbone site. Said Huckaby: “I think Gene Chizik has taken the friendly out of the rivalry forever — not because he played a player who most of the nation feels will eventually prevent the Tigers from being able to count the victory in their long and storied history, but because of the way he and his team conducted themselves throughout the contest and particularly at the end.”
I’m sure Darrell will be bombarded with AU hate mail for that, as have any of us who’ve questioned any of the actions of Tiger players and coaches.
Speaking of which, has there ever been a more thin-skinned bunch than Auburn fans, who have been all over the blogosphere and talk shows the past few days trying to equate Bulldogs players running out on the field with Fairley’s cheap shots and taunting?
I like the way MrSEC put it: “Auburn fans need to stop trying to defend the indefensible. As if a team dancing on someone’s logo is reason enough to risk injuring someone. How incredibly stupid. … By defending Fairley’s helmet-to-back shot, it makes it appear as though AU fans would defend anything and everything done by someone in navy [and] orange.”
But I guess that’s what comes from being perpetually the second-ranked program in your state thanks to the school over in Tuscaloosa.

You won 4 of the last 5 games vs AU-be happy.
Is Aaron Murray hurt? Do you honestly believe it is Nick’s intent to hurt him?

i’ll say this, there’s no way you can convince me now that the SEC, and the officiating crews ran by the SEC,don’t have a little say in who they want to win ball games at the end of the season when there’s a lot on the line in terms of the National Championship..

I only wish Nick Fairley and Cam Newton woudl be around next season. They will not. One to the NFL, the other ruled ineligible, forced to the NFL, and will be cut when they realize spread offense quarterbacks donotmake good NFLers.
Good news it, this game will likely catch prime time status at Sanford next season, and you can bet your butt Aaron Murray and the Dawgs have ALREADY circled it.

I think it is funny, It took what 5 yrs and a Georgia team that is really not good this yr for Auburn to finally get a win. If that makes you proud Auburn than go right ahead. In the end you are and will always be a second rate team in your own state. It took cheap hits on our QB and getting away with bullsh@t calls for you to get by us. When your prize defensive player started getting beat up he did what all Auburn does best he ran. Lets not mention the cheap punches thrown at the end of the game. lol how cowardly can a team be. I have watched several Auburn games this year. Nick Unfairley consistently tried to injure every opposing QB by pile driving them into the ground. This is the moron’s MO. No one has mentioned that, during the UGA game, Unfairley hurt his own shoulder by driving Murray into the ground and landing half on Murray and half with his shoulder on the turf. That’s what caused his shoulder injury. Look at the replay. Face it-the guy’s a moron and is trying to capture NFL scouts attention quickly after wallowing around as a JUCO.

Game is over …. history!
Auburn beat us as they were the better team. Auburn outscored us 42-10 after the first qurter – we got blown away.
Auburn was more physical and UGA was out coached.
The on sides kick to open the second half spoke volumes of how the two coaches looked to win this game. Auburn forced the issue – UGA simply was playing the game and would manage accordingly.
Our defense stinks !
Let’s get over it, Bill – this game is history. More embarrassing than this loss is losing to Colorado, getting beat in OT to a poor Florida team – (which just shows you how poor UGA really is this year), the arrests and the AD pimping his stuff in buckhead getting a dui.
This program needs a strong dose of discipline and I can’t wait for a new batch of players to come in – consider it an honor and a priveledge to play college athletics – and act accordingly.
I really like Ray Goff – a great man – got the dogs to a 10-2 record – but proved to be a medicore head coach.
I like Jim Donnan – great eye for talent – built the program – just missed making it big at UGA trying to catch Tennessee and Florida – both top 10 programs – but UGA was inconsistent and underachieved at strange times.
Now for Richt – inherited great talent from Donnan – built on it – was competive up unitl 2005. We have not even sniffed the SEC East since then. It’s called coaching folks – somethingis wrong with our program – and he is the Leader.
Richt is a very good man – and has proven to be very good coach – but has also proven to be mediocre. He went CEO and became hands off. OUr players are acting disrespectful and the lack of discipline is showing of the field. He lost the program – and UGA is 8th best in the SEC – with lesser talented teams beating us. 5-6 people!!
Richt will have next year – but we need to see something great – not good our of UGA in 2011.
This year has been a disaster – and it boils down to leadership, teaching and execution.

This matter is well worth complaining about, but now, it is time to move on AND it is time for the players and coaches to mark this occasion and do something about it next year.

In light of the story on Ben Jones suspension and UGA and Richt’s agreement with the SEC to suspend him, the question should probably be, did anyone expect Auburn to take an objective look at Fairley? This might be nothing more than Auburn fighting with the SEC and the SEC saying ‘ok’. Which doesn’t surprise me at all. Oh well.. time to let it go… Karma’s coming back to bite ‘em soon, for sure.

Despite the fact the QB is the most questionable considering the current investigation.. I am glad they played him against us so they had no reason to make excuses if they had loss. The cheap shots on Murray however were not justified especially considering he’s done nothing to warrant the shots.. sacking him is one thing but he was clearly hit on purpose more than once after he released the ball.
With that being said.. enjoy your win inbreds.. next time learn to win with class.. you’ll have to leave your barnyard sanctuary next year and show your faces btween the hedges.. and just like GA tech learned in 2009.. and Tennessee learned this year.. them Dawgs don’t forget.. you wanted to turn the heat up on this rivalry.. It makes perfect sense that this article was written by an ignorant uga fan. I understand that Nick Fairley’s hit in the back was dirty, but I don’t blame him at all. The chop-block put on him earlier in the game when 2 linemen went high and another went for his knees was inexcusable and completely exemplifies what uga stands for. You say AU is “second” school in Alabama huh? AU beat Bama six years in a row. Ranked number 2 in nation, SEC west champs (and have already beaten SEC east champs once this season). I believe that makes AU #1 in the state. As for Georgia. Tech has better record right now, as does Georgia State. That makes UGA #3. You don’t like your QB taking hits? Block him, and for God’s sake stop jumping on the opponents logo before the game….You have done that for years at FLA/GA game and they still own you.

The truth is that all of these posts are sad. At one point in our country, people operated on a basis of sportsmanship. That idea has disappeared. Keep it in perspective. We are talking about college football here. I, along with many of you, enjoy football and have followed it for nearly 50 years. UGA, Auburn, whichever school you want to insert here, are institutions of higher learning. Unfortunately, our society has blown the actions of their football teams and players completely out of proportion in relation to the true mission of the institution.

I’m still waiting for someone to justify to me why Fairley got away with the late hit on Murray where he dragged his facemask along his chin causing the cuts that had to be bandaged up. I’m pretty sure that was in the first quarter, and long before the chop blocks, late hit penalties, and ugliness that we saw at the end of the game. No excuse from me regarding the chop blocks, but that incident should have been handled by the refs on the field. When it was ignored by the refs (and now the SEC), things escalated with cheap shots being taken by both teams.

All the Bama and UGA fans on these blogs say things like “AU has the best team money can buy” and they use pro athletes. That is the saddest whiney crap I have ever heard. EVEN IF the NCAA finds that Cecil or even CAM for that matter, asked for money that was at Miss. State. No one has ever said AU payed anyone. This was not even an issue until November. Did LSU or Miss state claim AU were cheating when they got beat? Did Clemson or S.C? no. They licked their wounds and played on. Georgia is focusing its frustration of being not even bowl eligible. It is ok, the Papajohns.com bowl still has a place for you guys if you beat tech. Grow up.

Really if you look at it Fairley’s impact on the game was very limited. Think about it take Cam out the game and no win. Cam carried Auburn to the win. Fairley’s only impact is to hit a QB when the ball is out of his hands. I guess he was either to slow or to stupid to get to him before than. So really he shut no one up. The only thing he could do was cheap shot a QB and rum like a girl when Georgia started coming after him.

I have cousins who graduated from UGA and cousins who graduated from Auburn. We don’t hate each other and we never will. Let’s have some perspective about this. As for the football aspect, Georgia needs to get better; more physical on both the offensive and defensive fronts. Perhaps then Georgia can compete for a championship. Go Dawgs!!

I won’t try to defend Fairley’s late hits. He was appropriately penalized for the hit in the back. The helmet to the knee was football. Anyone objectively watching the game knows that. As for the end of the game, I wonder if Bill King was there? Chizik was doing what Richt should have been doing – keeping his team on the sideline. Trooper Taylor went on the field to get Fairley off it. It also comes across as whiney when you rail about Fairley and AU’s dirty play and completely ignore the fact that the first PF of the game was called on a UGA player – on the opening kick-off no less. I won’t even get into the logo stomping stuff during pre-game. The apparent fact is Richt wanted a high intensity game. Looks to me like he got it. If you can’t stand the heat, don’t go in the kitchen. Either way, quit whining about it. Doesn’t do your team or school justice.

We got beat by a better Auburn team. We’ve lost SIX games this season. I think we might actually be the best 5-6 team in the nation right now, but we are still FIVE and SIX!
Fairley had some flagrant hits on Murray. It sucked. But we played Auburn well. They beat us because they are the better team. They are likely the best team in the nation right now. And we are not.

There was a time that I naively believed in the integrity of the sports and sports in general. Then I watched the Pitt/WV a few years ago when WV needed to win to play in the BCS title game. You cannot convince me that the refs were not trying to earn it’s conference that additional $ for a title appearance. It was blatantly obvious. Having witnessed that first hand it is impossible for me to discount the notion that decisions regarding Newton and Fairley are directly connected to the value Auburn represents to the conference should they win the next two games.

Dorsey, that’s a fair observation and perhaps partially true. But you also have to remember that AU was in contact with the SEC and NCAA long before they became an apparent cash cow (pardon the pun) and, frankly, before Cam Newton even stepped on the field at AU. You might be right that the decisions currently being made are being influenced by the potential dollar impact. A flag doesn’t have to be thrown for the SEC to review the tape and know what players left the Bench to rush the field. That is a League thing just like suspending FAIRLEY for plays that were not flages in the game or on NFL plays that were not flaged too. UGA broke SEC RULES(hahahaha) when many on the bench rushed the field. You know the SEC will not do anything and risk a SEC team not being Bowl elidgable and losing to an ACC team because the SEC team broke the rules.
Be honest UGA should have 1/2 the D and O line suspended for the plays in the Auburn game. If you can’t admit that UGA is GUILTY as HELL for rules violations then you are just too wrapped-up in the dawgs to admit the TRUTH.

Come on Tim, at least quote your stories correctly. The report was that a source told a reporter that he was told by Cecil Newton that a discussion about money took place. Now, that third hand story, if you assume it is accurate, could mean a number of things. One possibility is that Cecil asked for money, but there are many other plausible ones as well. Regardless, that isn’t new news. At least not to AU or MSU or the SEC or the NCAA. But let’s go one farther. There has not been one shred of evidence or accusation that AU did something wrong. Don’t you think as much as people have been all over this story for the past two weeks that if AU was paying there would at least be some smoke (or at least fog) there? It doesn’t pass the sniff test. AU may eventually be implicated. I don’t know that they won’t. My point was that you don’t know that they will. UGA Alum….I dont doubt for a minute your love of UGA and that you are a proud Dawg…..that said- so am I. I have nothing against AU winning the game. I do take strong issue with how one of their players conducted themselves and how their coach reacted to it. There is no place in this game for the likes of Fineley nor a coach like the one AU has now. This used to be a friendly rivalry- but no more. I wish nothing except bad thisgs for this player, this coach, this team and anyone associated with this university. Fans booing a hurt player show the lack of class that this university breeds. If you think I am wrong for feeling like I do- so be it. I would be willing to bet many more share my views. Yes we are 5-6 and I can list a few reasons why that is…starting with players geting in trouble and being suspended for games but win or lose they are my team. I am not going to trash my team…5-6…12-0…0-12….they are my dawgs

I’m not worried about Auburn’s play, I am mortified at UGA’s this season. This is the worst team since 1993 and that team didn’t have near the talent that this one does. This might be the biggest underachieving UGA team since the 70’s. I can’t think of one that did less with more.
With a head coach making $2.8 mill and a d coordinator at $750K, the results were the worst possible results imaginable. I know, you can argue that losing ALL the games is the worst possible result, but is it really?
Let’s assume you allowed me to pick a high school staff off a team from New Hampshire (let me at least pick one with a winning record the last 3 years). Install them a month prior to Spring practice last year at UGA in Lieu of this highly paid staff. Do you think they would be any WORSE then 5-6 this year? I don’t. Pay them a total of $500,000 for the entire staff and save $3,000,000 plus and I honestly think the results would have been at least as good with the same schedule and the same players. I’d lay even money that they could get to at least 5-6 with the best WR in college football, the best in history of UGA football.
That high school staff could still beat Louis. Laf., maybe just maybe TN game could have been lost, but I would submit that we would have had at least a 50-50 chance to beat Colorado with the unknown high school staff, so that puts us even for the year. We would still beat Vandy, probably KY, and we would have beaten ID State, so what has $4,000,000 plus in salaries bought us? Maybe one more win than the worst possible season that a high school coaching staff could have gotten with this same talent and same schedule.
I suppose Richt has earned one more season with what he did during his first 7 years, but I am not feeling too good about next year. Hopeful, YES!, but I don’t realistically think he can turn the ship around.
What will make it different?

(2) UGA people can’t seem to comprehend what a “Chop Block” is and how it can be much worse than a late hit. I suggest the writer of this so-called-article get a rule book and see how many rules UGA broke!!!
(3) The AU coach was primarily trying to get the player off of the field. The ‘dancing’ was incidental. Try actually WATCHING what happened.
(4) What Bowl game is UGA going to this year…. The Popcorn Bowl…. The Whiney Losers Bowl….The Don’t Play Hard Bowl…The Puppy Bowl…

Kyle, for the record, I never boo a player. What AU was booing was that the guy was coming off the field, the coaching staff starts yelling at him, and he suddenly falls down on the turf injured. Whether it was a correct interpretation or not, what they perceived (and it was right in front of the student section) was that it was an intentional ploy to stop the clock without using a timeout. Please don’t tell me you don’t think the same thing would have happened in reverse. As for Chizik, I’m curious to know what you think he should have been doing. He kept his team on the sideline during the fracas. In my opninion, Fairley should have not been in the game at that point because the game was out of question and emotions were obviously running high.

Latest I have heard on the Newton scandal is that the father admitted guilt to the FBI and is trying to frame it that Cam didn’t know anything about it to protect his son. My guess is that Auburn will forfeit this season, the coach will be fired, and there will be severe penalties in terms of loss of scholarships and bowl appearances, worse than what USC got.
My guess is the only thing that Cam will suffer is that he will have to give the Heisman back (if he wins it), but he will make his millions in the NFL and he will move on with his life a lot easier than the coach, the father, or Auburn. Maybe that is how it should be.

I-Dog. Here’s a better guess. Cecil discussed money with Rogers when Cam was visiting MSU. For whatever reason, the deal didn’t get made. Long story short here, Cam goes to AU – but his presence there is predecated on priori knowledge by AU, the SEC, and the NCAA that he was eligible depsite Cecil’s discussion with Rogers. The outcomes are that Cam plays the rest of the year. AU did due diligence. They aren’t getting slammed by the NCAA. MSU will have to answer some questions about a couple of boosters involved in this. Rogers will end up being the fall guy, and deservedly so. He’s at the center of the FBI part of this.

My God–Get over it!
I was raised in Auburn and am a UGA alum. This is always my favorite game of the year–I never know who to pull for! Anyway, it got a little chippy, but so have many games this year for a lot of teams. Yes, Fairley gave a couple of late hits. Yes, he was called for one of them. Tempers got hot at the end of what GA thought going in would be the game that redeemed the season.
I work with UGA and Auburn folks–my God, y’all, we’re practically inbred! Most folks here aren’t all that angry, just a little disappointed. We’ve had fun joking back and forth over who did what and how bad, but at the end of the day, it’s just a ball game. On a late lunch break, but got to get back to work now. Real stuff. Not SEC soap opera. Just a ball game folks. And remember–UGA, Auburn–we’re practically inbred.

As much as I don’t want to admit it you are correct.
I think Van Halanger have a couple of heart problems this year and is set to retire. That’s probably why UGA has had such poor results in conditioning. So problem one solved . Now ,finding an SEC caliber running back coach is something else. Bryan McLendon has not done a good job
with the running back’s and that brings us to the biggest problem , BOBO. We scored over 30 points in the last 5 games and there will be an argument that Bobo deserves one more year. But , we should have scored 40 and would have scored a lot more in the first 6 games if Bobo had any ability to evaluate talent. He brought Murray along way to slow starting with not plating him last year in the last 3 or 4 games to not letting him run the ball 15 times a game starting with the first game. Bobo’s play calling get a D- especially when the game is on the line in the fourth quarter.

I am a UGA alum and lifelong UGA fan and I get so tired of our fan base complaining about every little thing. Auburn beat the hell out of us. Deal with it. They played nasty and mean, which are two characteristics that richt led teams have always lacked. I was flabbergasted that Fairley was not penalized on all 3-4 plays that he either hit murray too aggressively or late, but thats not Auburn’s fault. If the officials take control of the situation and penalize him for that first arn anderson type body slam, then Auburn and Fairley have to adjust the way that they play. Problem solved. We sound so stupid when we try and act morally superior to our rivals. “i’d rather lose than win like they did.” Grow up!

It will be interesting to see how the Cam issue plays out in the long run. Where theres smoke theres fire but maybe not in this case. we’ll see.
Bad officiating job to let it get to where it did at the end. Would have loved to see a side angle of the on side kick. Couldn’t tell from my set but it was close. Whatever the case Auburn had Newton and Fairly and I didn’t see those kind of game changers on our sideline.

Nick Saban says:
Saban was asked a general question about Newton in the context of Saban’s earlier stated concerns about agents in college football, and how the NCAA is handling that.
“I’m comfortable with the way they do it. That’s up to them on what they find and what they decide to do, and I have total faith, trust and confidence that they’ll do it the right way,” Saban said.
“Our focus here is different than some people. There is a paranoia in our profession I think that has existed since the beginning of time. A lot of people in our profession are always looking at what someone else is doing. One thing that I’ve tried to get our guys to do is, let’s take care of our business, and our business will take care of us. In other words, let’s take what we’re supposed to do — let’s evaluate, let’s do things the right way ourselves. We’re not concerned what everybody else is doing. That’s the way I’ve always tried to approach it.
“A lot of these things that people say are not true. The reasons you have a lot of this now is with the Internet — everything that happens is public information, so there’s a lot more attention on all these little things that people say now maybe there wasn’t at one time.”

I understand the frustration with Fairley, but his play has been hard to punish all season, not just against GA. He is about tackling through the throw and ‘technically’ it’s legal. Whoever wrote this column should know that the Assistant coach was not out there dancing with Fairley, he went out there to go get him off the field after GA made that kamikazee play to go after Fairley’s knees. Oconee, you do know, I assume, that there were receipts with Bush. Everything the agent did was documented. It didn’t take five years to investigate. The NCAA just didn’t want to go after it until they were forced to. You guys seem more than willing to accept all the stories that reflect poorly on Newton and AU as fact then conveniently dismiss the numerous ones that say AU’s administration has been working with the SEC and NCAA on this since January. I’ve freely admitted that I have no clue what the outcome of this will be. All I’m suggesting is that you guys do the same. Try it. It’s very refreshing.

War Eagle 2010, Fairley should have been whistled for more than the late hit where he speared the qb in the back. The body slam and for rubbing his helmet in the qb face. The last hit that started the fight looked like an accident to me. If the refs do their jobs than the fight never starts. Either way we don’t win the game so I’m not making excuses. I just hate that the Auburn season is going to be a black eye on college football and the SEC. I wish it weren’t true because if GA isn’t there than I hope that someone from the SEC represents…but not auburn and not this year…The NCAA is coming and probation is coming with them.

It is a smooth tactic to try and draw attention away from a team where the wheels are officially of the bus. No the SEC will not do anything to Auburn, and they shouldn’t. In fact a simple review of just the last loss for the Bulldogs presents a much bigger problem than any at Auburn. Georgia started the game with an uncalled for penalty away from the ball on Rambo. It got no better with various orchestrated dirty and intentional chop blocks and roughhousing in the “dog pile”.
Of course this is to be expected in a hotly contested rivalry game. The problem that Georgia has is they are simply pitiful. They had no chance of holding a two score lead and it wasn’t even close. They were playing a tired and emotionally beat down team that had been tenderized perfectly by the media. They still looked awful and clueless. The Georgia head coach’s answer was to send in video clips to the SEC officials on a player that has four SEC defensive line player of the week awards. I wonder if any SEC official had actually watched him play? DUH
Georgia is an awful team and awful program with talent running out of their ears. There is only one reason and excuse for this. Georgia has the wrong man running the program.

5150, I don’t really blame the UGA line for going after Fairley at the end of the game, if you consider the context of everything else that had happened during the game. They didn’t see the play. All they saw was Murray rolling on the ground with Fairley standing over him. I doubt it was a very big leap to conclude it was a dirty hit. That’s an unintended consequence of playing on the edge IMO.

To EagleEye and all of the other AU fans comparing the poor behavior of the 2 teams this year and years past – it’s obvious to anyone who has ever played football that Fairley was trying to INJURE the UGA quarterback.Pile driving, spearing in the back, going for the knees, etc on the opposing team’s QB is unsportsmanlike at best. Dancing like idiots on the sideline is bad, but it doesn’t jeopardize a player’s health and future. No problem with Auburn in general, just with their one dirty player….

Slamming qb shoulders in the dirt would get you another fine. He did it with UGA and he did it to the LSU qb. He’s a great player but the coach needs to get him to cut it out. I love how GA is acting as the victim when they were so LUCKY the ref’s didn’t throw some of their players out too.
And for Auburn, Gene can’t control that team. It was obvious in last years Outback Bowl against Northwestern. Is it any surprise he can’t control his team this year as well?!

Okay, I need to give the writer of this article some “ghetto lessons”.
Nick Fairley and the assistant coach were not “dancing on the field.” Nick Fairley was gearing up to enter the little scuffle that broke out on the field, and the coach who was wear versed in ghetto interactions managed to keep probably the biggest guy on the field out of the fight. Go back and watch the tape, Nick Fairley was doing the “dance” in preparation of entering the brawl, and the coach was keeping him out of it. I do think that that one hit everyone is talking about was horrible, but I don’t think it was on purpose.

Chop Blocking O line
November 17th, 2010
2:30 pm
Our horrible line chop blocked the best defensive lineman in the conference numerous times so he eventually retaliated. He was penalized for it and gave us a first down after a 3rd and long. Our thUGA team them had 3 players go after him which caused his teammates to jump in to help him. We got 2 players suspended for their biggest game of the year (at the last the first half) for our lack of class. Why isn’t the SEC looking at the entire team at thUGA for coming off the sidelines? That’s a lack of class!

As an Auburn fan, I didn`t like Fairley`s late hit on Murray. I don`t believe it was planned but a spur of the moment hit that shouldn`t have happened. It`s a shame you Georgia fans don`t appear to have watched the same game I did. your coach had as much to do with the late hitting and chippiness as anyone. He spent more time on the field whining at the refs than your team did. I guess you conveniently forget the three lineman diving on Fairley the next play after Fairley mad a clean hit on Murray`s leg. Or made the Ga. defender slamming his shoulder into Newton late or the Georgia staff encouraging a player to go down on the field to save a timeout. But why would we expect anything less. I think the only coach I`ve ever seen have his entire team run on for a celebration or whatever you want to call it like he did against Florida was bush league at best. trooper and Fairley weren`t dancing you DA; Trooper was trying to get him off the field and Fairley stupidly thought he was there to celebrate. I`m sure he found out later that was wrong. Oh, and did any of the at least half of Georgia`s team that ran on the field to incite a near riot get penalized by the school or the conference. Chizik and his coaches instead of encouraging this kept Auburn`s entire team on the sideline. There was a lot of chippiness to go on for sure but to blame it on one player or one team or whatever is off the mark. Enough blame on both sides. And before you start throwing the auburn loser stuff at me; I went to my first game at Auburn in 1958 and my first game in Athens in 1959. Georgis has always been my second favorite college football team other than Auburn and will continue. Now ya`ll go and beat Tech.

Preseason, if you knew anything about college football (and it’s obvious you do not), you would know that Cal has one of the best defenses in the country. Plus, every team has a down game, and I was looking at that game and the one coming up against an equally good Arizona defense as potential “trap games” for the Ducks. Really, Stanford’s defense was even better than the others, so either the Ducks had a *really* down game, or Cal’s coaching staff had an excellent game plan. Of course, being a college football fan, I know which one it was…do you?

You may well be right, we will have to wait and see. That doesn’t sound plausible to me, though. Maybe that will be the default situation because nothing can be pinned on Auburn, but that doesn’t sound plausible to me at all.
I just can’t see a coach going to the administation at Auburn and saying “hey the guy had 13 traffic viloations and 3 seperate academic cheating scandals at Florida along with throwing a laptop out the window that ended up being stolen property (all in one year mind you), then was offered $180K to go to MS State, but we should offer the kid a scholarship because he won’t do anything wrong while he is here at Auburn.” If all of that was known by the Auburn admin, I’d be shocked if they would take that chance.

Fairley’s play was brutal and disgusting with the late hits. It’s unfortunate that there is no disciplinary action on this guy. As for Newton, the truth will come out and AU will pay big time–or maybe they will. The parity of equally great teams in the Pac-10 does that. Look at the out-of-conference losses by Pac-10 teams.
Oregon – None
Stanford – None
USC – None
Arizona – None
Oregon St – TCU, Boise State
Cal – Nevada
UCLA – Kansas State
Washington – BYU, Nebraska
Arizona State – Wisconsin
Washington State – OK State, SMU
Of the 9 out-of-conference losses, 6 came at the hands of currently ranked schools, as of right now, ranked in the AP poll as numbers 3 (Boise St), 4 (TCU), 6 (Wisconsin), 9 (Nebraska), 12 (OK State), and 19 (Nevada). If you can’t understand the importance of such distinctions, you simply prove my point: you know very little about college football.

SEC Vegas connection is real. Eevery year, the SEC darling gets favortism from the ref’s, been Alabama, LSU (remeber the Georgia game refs?), Florida, now it’s Auburn’s year.
Here are just a few of the many things the refs TOTALY MISSED in the Auburn Georgia game:
1- Onside kick should have been overturned–the kicker touched it too fast
2- Fumble by Cam on the goal-line 9even the tv announcers called it)
3- Pass interference on Georgia (phantom call if I’ve ever seen one)
4- 10 penalities on a Georgia team who averages 5 a game?????
5- Missed calls on 3 illegal hits by Nick Fairley

And to answer someone’s earlier question yes I do believe he was trying to hurt Murry, by the way it’s not because we lost. Nobody really thought we were going to win in the first place. Also I would have rather lost with Cam playing then win with him on the bench. The SEC has spoken so move on.

So for the record…GA fans think that AU is a second rate program? I will sympathize with you for a second because you guys are still grieving the loss of Staford and Moreano, but other than that…WAKE UP. As a AU fan (and Richt fan) I think it is sad most of the posts are basically saying that AU (Fairley) was PLAYING too hard. That is all it is. How many of you actually played High School football? College Football? Then some of you know that it is the intent of most players to “hurt the guy with the ball” That is meant and said in a figurative way almost everytime. It is a proven fact that injuries or if your not playing 100% due to the fact that your opponent is… To say Nick was trying too hard is just not right as a football fan in general. I am not defending the hit to the back, because it was a stupid foul and hurt the AU team and defense at the time, but these are kids. Kids that want to play as well as possible every down of every game. Reality check folks…kids make mistakes. As far as the end of the game goes. Well, the hit to the shin was actually caused by a hold and a takedown by the OL that was trying to block him (and a double team OL that was a little late) and was by all means on accident. Did it cross the line? No. Was it the straw that broke the dawgs back? Yes. I live in GA and have met many GA fans throughout this season that would say the same things. Losing hurts and can cause stress. So can getting illegal chopblocks and double teams with punches (open hand basic blocking tech) to the gut (which are legal if done between the whistle)
As for the taunting and Nick is concerned…flip the page to #18 and see Rambo

It’s time that Georgia fans quit thinking the rivalry with Auburn is just a good old friendly rival because it’s not- A true Georgia fan hates Auburn as bad as they hate Florida! Auburn’s continued recruiting of thugs and low academic student athletes from the state of Georgia who do not qualify academically for entrance to UGA is crap and is lifting Auburn Football to unrealistic and unfair heights. I have always said if it was not for the players Auburn recruits from Georgia can you imagine the quality or lack-of their program. One day soon when the NCAA slams the hammer down on that red-neck school things will change for the better! Why the recruits who have a chance to go to Georgia and receive a high-quality education and help lift Georgia to championship caliber program where it belongs, elects to go to Auburn, I am confused but on the other hand when you watch thugs like Nick Fairley it all becomes very clear! Can’t wait until next year when Auburn visits Athens!

Same and similar behavior. Dancing around when he knocked out Lee in the 2nd qtr, a hit on Jefferson that was beyond the whistle by 2 plus seconds…Whatdaya expect, that he’d let up on your QB..? If only the SEC office had stepped in earlier, huh..? We’ll see if Fairley has learned how to put on the brakes in the Iron Bowl.

I cannot believe you are jumping on the conspiracy theory bandwagon! I know you write the UGA blog, but you are supposed to be a journalist…..not a “sidewalk fan” throwing accusations around whenever UGA loses. Yes, Fairley had several unsportsman-like plays. So did UGA with the cut-blocking. It was an intense game and emotions got a little out of hand at the end. Kind of like Coach Grantham at the end of the UF/UGA game. But that would not suit your argument would it?

Why does anyone connected to, or who loves UGA (I’m a 1981 UGA grad) even WANT to maintain a “friendly rivalry” with any team we play, especially a conference school. Friends are fine for academic work and administrative issues, but on the fields and court of play, we are “enemies.” We don’t like Auburn, Florida, Alabama, LSU, South Carolina, Tennessee, etc., and they don’t like us. And that’s as it should be. I’m tired of Georgia people saying that now, after Saturday’s dirty game, Auburn vs. Georgia will never again be considered a “friendly rivalry.” We never should have thought of it that way in the first place. Our job is to try and beat their brains out, all the time, EVERY time. Auburn plays dirty. Auburn cheats. The SEC will do nothing about it. Is any of this really breaking news anywhere. I’m the first guy to say we ought to play clean and do things right. But I want our teams (not just football, but all our athletic teams) and coaches to play their games with a friggin chip on their shoulders. We can be friends at the after-party. Go Dawgs and THWGT!

Nick Fairly did not become one of the best defensive players for nothing. He did NOT do anything that deserved a suspension. A player can be suspended for a late hit to the head or neck area not back or legs. Look at the rule book. Stop making excuses. I am an old time Auburn fan but have always been a follower and supporter of Georgia in their games. I was disappointed in how this game was played on both sides of the ball. I think it shows in the number of personal fouls called during the game, with 6 against each side. I wont defend Nicks hit on your quarterback anymore than a normal Georgia fan would defend the chop block penalty called on a Georgia player against Fairley. It’s unfortunate the game ended the way it did, and actually, both teams disgraced the history of this rivalry. War Eagle, and go Dawgs beat GT!

Heres a novel idea dawg fans. Get an offensive line that can BLOCK. if that doesnt work, get the quarterback to roll out and pass. Or keep a back in the backfield. I didnt see much of any of that. Murray is a great young QB but when the entire offense is for him to drop back and launch one to AJ, then sometimes he is going to get busted if the OL doesnt do its work.

I always thought as the Auburn–UGA rivalry like that between brothers–hard-fought yes, pretty much even, a tough fight but a respectful one. But not the kind that exists between Auburn–Alabama or UGA-Tech. Not anymore. UGA and its fans no longer have an ounce of respect for the whole Cam, Fairley, Chizik led Auburn program.

This is just plain idiotic. This game has always been one of my favorites because of the cross exchange of coaches and the similarities of the two schools. Both are cow colleges. Dirty play and the response to dirty play just took the fun out of the game for me. I am not telling Chizik how to deal with his players but if I was the coach, notice the I, and my assistant coach tried to get a player off the field and that player refused and strutted instead. I would sit him down for the rest of the game, bring him into my office on Sunday and say, you are out for the rest of the year unless you can prove to me why you will change and listen to your coaches. After the whatever explanation, I would say, you will play, but if you embarass me and this institution one more time, you are done for the season.

No particular dog in this hunt, but out of curiosity I watched the comcast replay and I just don’t get what the dog fans are barking about (other than the pain of watching their team take an early lead and blow it.) The Fairley guy had the blatant late hit and was flagged – a play that killed a 3rd down stop and led to a UGA score! The knock to Murray’s knee toward the end was unfortunate but hard to call intentional, and it was UGA that then amped everything up by running over Fairley and mugging him on the ground. Chizik is rooster but at least he kept his team on the sidelines when UGA’s entire team stormed the field to rumble. Very classy move by Richt to take a knee to end it. Other than that it was just another big-game Saturday…the LEAST classy thing about it as far as I can tell is the reaction of Georgia fans here….

So what you want AU fans but Fairley is a freaking thug who probably can’t even spell his name! Yes Georgia threw a chop block but it was only after he had drilled Murray late 3 prior times with a “no call.” Do you all take pride in this? Apparently your coaches do. Georgia decided if the refs were not going to handle it then they would. I don’t condone intentionally trying to ruin anothers potential career but I am glad our guys stood uo for Murray. I would be concerned if they didn’t. I also don’t care what any of you say, the play in which Murray got hurt was not contributed to Fairley being blocked into Murray. He could have avoided. I DVR’d this game and have gone over the plays several times. He intentionally made contact. I believe in playing agressiveley on D and you have to have a mean streak and toughness in you. Of Course not, because if the SEC came down on Fairley it would have to suspend Georgia’s Ben Jones, Clint Boling, Washaun Ealey, and Possibly Marc Richt for the Georgia Tech game. Georgia would have to play Tech without most of its offensive line. The 3 mentioned all threw punches, and Ben Jones was the cause of the whole incident after jumping Fairley and punching him while he laid on the ground. Richt for going on the field and telling the official why he sent his players out like head hunters to deliberate ignore all the rules and to start a brawl.

Fred Dawg,
Way to step up. You are awesome. Everyone shut up and listen to the BIG DAWG speak. Fred you are spot on and it takes a lot to step up and say it like it is. Sometimes it takes a little straight talk to get everyone to stop their griping. The only way to improve the situation is to step back and take a look at the big picture, otherwise you get the same thing and people just complaining and finding something to vent their frustration out on.

Would someone please put Bill out of his misery? No Auburn fan that I know of is justifying the penalized late hit in the back on Murray. It was uncalled for and was stupid because it allowed a stopped GA drive to continue. However, this idiot has conveniently changed his tune because in his first post game blog he was complaining about the “so-called” hit to Murray’s knee while Fairley was on the ground. I guess Bill has finally watched the tape and realized his initial reaction was stupid. I wish UGA fans would show the gonads of Buck Belue who has accurately called this tempest in a teapot for what it is: “if Fairley played for UGA, he would be a rock star” SORE LOSERS!!!

Bill King=Nail on Head. Evidence is ALL OVER this board, period. AU=perpetual red-headed stepchild of the state of Alabama. Your inferiority complex is as blatantly obvious as that of Georgia Tech and Clemson (that would be Auburn with a man-made LAKE). Thin-skinned, can’t take any criticism, Cam Newton did not do anything wrong, Nick Fairley got goaded into his actions by the Georgia players, Gene Chizik is a genius (even though we really didn’t want him), blah blah blah. Dirty cheating players who will get theirs. Hope y’all enjoy watching Soccer at Jordan-Hare the next few years while the Dawgs climb back to the top!

You lost quite crying. If you are really interseted in the truth get 3 officials from non SEC conference and have them review the game and call all the penalties . There were SEVERAL CHOP BLOCKS by Ga. I guess that is how you teach your linemen to play fair. You need to start looking at yourself. Yea Nicks hit it the back was wrong but so was chop blocks and then Jones Kneeing Faiarly several times when he was on the ground and tackling your RB. That is what started the whole thing. But I am sure you will say he was only Plowing the ground. What a bunch of losers. I do hope you beat Tech and go to a bowl.

To answer Dan Ryan’s question to Bill about “Nick’s” intention to hurt Murray and remove him from the game. Did Dan see the game? It was clear in the first five minutes, that was the PLAN and it happened. Losing is bad for most fans, to lose to a “dirty” team is even worst. (bad guys are not suppose to win) Since UGA cannot make it to the National Championship game, I loved the success that Ala., Fla. LSU had in representing the SEC. Also, I felt AU and Tubberfield (sp?) had been cheated the last time AU was undefeated. At this point I could care less who becomes NC champions as long as it is not AU. UGA and Richt need to get their act together and take football seriously, that means win some hard ones.

Chizik has taken the Tigers back to the 80s, where schools were investigated for payments, players were encouraged to do whatever it takes, legally or illegally to win the game, etc.
(1) Chizik obviously promotes and encourages dirty and dangerous play by Fairley, (2) if the NCAA finds violations in the recruitment of Newton, and drops the hammer on Auburn, the responsibility falls square on the shoulders of Chizik. He is the coach that brought in the Newton, a player with 4 strikes against him. He basically gambled the future of Auburn football on what could be termed a “habitual violator.”
For the sake of Chizik’s legacy and the future of Auburn football, he had better hope nothing more is found in the Newton saga. But don’t bet on it. The NCAA never leaves empty handed.

How many sacks did Fairly have (ZERO, NONE, NADA). That proves that our O-line did a great job of blocking him. So, if he had zero sacks, how come I can tell you the three plays where he busted Murray’s chin, sternum and knee? The fourth play was a spear in the back. Man you people are stupid. I hope he gets what is coming to him.

There is not an “in the grasp rule” in college. If you try to tackle and they won’t go down, you have to take them off their feet. This is when it appears the pile driving occurs. So it would appear that the BQs should just fall down so they don’t get hurt. This is called football!

Georgia is having a really bad year and their offensive line is quite frustrated at not being able to protect their freshman QB so should anyone really be surprised that the SEC chose not to suggest UGA suspend two of its linemen for their blatant first quarter chop block against Auburn’s outstanding multiple SEC Player of the Week award winning lineman Nick Fairley.

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same question this time a year from now.
Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Meyer represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.
Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.
As they say in poker, “Read ‘em and weep.”

From cfbstats.com; Georgia ranks #9 of the top ten teams based on number of personal foul/unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Despite both Georgia and Auburn receiving 6 penaties last Saturday, Auburn still did not make the top ten. Not a rumor, not hearsay, just a fact.

So Fairley and AU is to take all the blame……….hum seems to me that #60 jumped Fairley and punched – look at the film he swung at him – and Fairley ran away; 23 of your players should bee suspended for leaving the bench area, at least Au coach had enough control to keep his players on the bench. Your coach has no control or class at all – see Ga – Au game two years ago with your player acting like idiots on the sidelines and getting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties after TD. I know Au should have stopped them. Fairley’s late hit in the back was uncalled for as well as the two AU players taking swings at Ga players late in the game.(#93 got hit late) but so were Ga’s actions. Players faking injuries and getting up slow to try to slow down the Au O.
On the play in question when Fairley hit the qb’s shin, if you have ever played football and you are trying to get the qb your head is down and you don’t know where the ball is. He was trying g to get the sack. I will agree that Fairley is an animal and his hits will cost him money next year, but if he was playing for Gay o would not feel the same way.
As far as AU’s best player being from GA – keep them at home –it’s not our fault you can’t take care of your own as well as out of state teams. AU has always recruited your best players – that’s why you have two former AU coaches on your staff and your greatest coach of all time is from AU – Dooley. And as far as next year goes if the O-line gets the job done AU will be fine and the D even better – without Fairley.

Bill, you are very ignorant and clearly have little understanding on the entire situation. Notice after Fairley has his eyes gaulged on the field, and his players defend him, that the Georgia players hop off the bench while Auburn players sit on theirs. He does not intend to hurt anyone. He is a huge and intense player that gets the job done. If Nick Fairley wanted to take anyone out of a football game, he could make it happen in one drive. You also prove your ignorance when talking about Chizik celebrating and playing Cam. He was celebrating a great victory over a school that once had a good football team. His decision to play Cam proves that he knows Cam did nothing wrong.

I’m not so sure a UGA fan started that fire…there’s usually hundreds if not thousands of AU people there after a game. I just can’t see a UGA fan getting away with something like that with so many witnesses and just about everybody has a camera or camera phone on gameday. Probably just a random cigarette.

@Jay, it was at 2:30 or so AM…not thousands of fans with cell phone camera’s out that late! And from what I read, there were a couple of witnesses, who said the guy lit it intentionally AND that he had a GA cap on. Doubt an Auburn fan would wear that!
As for the rest of this crap that GA keeps spewing, give it a rest already! Did Fairly hit late…sure. Did he intentionally want to hurt the GA quaterback…doubt it. Was there ALOT of provocation from the GA players all game long…definitely. I watched some of it happen right in front of where I was sitting at the game and it was early in the game.
Even with all of that, I didn’t agree with the boos when GA players were down. At least not at first. After about the 5th or 6th time (not sure how many times they did it, since I didn’t count, just know it was ALOT)…even I began to believe they weren’t really hurt. Slowing down the game by pretending to be hurt is unsportsmanlike as well.
AU-GA has been a friendly rivalry over the years. I hope that the one time that it got out of control doesn’t make it a bitter rivalry for years. Maybe that’s what GA wanted all along though. Takes the focus off the fact that their team isn’t winnidoing quite so well this year and put it on something extraneous to their football program.

So let me get this straight. The first play of the game was a 12 yard run by Cam Newton and a 15 yard personal foul by Georgia. Georgia, mind you, a team with multiple arrests in the pre season.
Thence, we proceeded to chop block Fairley, and we were called on it, but evidently we did it a multitude of times. Fairley, probably in revenge mode for our team trying to end his career because they were incapable of blocking him fairly, spears our QB. He is called for it.
Auburn puts the game far out of reach and thus we are left wallowing around trying to make the score more respectable as time runs out. Fairley is then, as Buck Belue said on his radio show, blocked into Murray on what was a clean hit. Painful, but clean. So we retaliate and start a fight, we clear our benches, we have a pitiful excuse for an offensive lineman and a running back with legal troubles throwing punches and an entire team clearing the bench – which is against the rules and mind you that dirty team, Auburn, did not clear the benches. You know why? Because their coaches didn’t let them.
Auburn guy is tossed. Next play our WR tries to throw their DB into our sideline… so that I guess we could beat him up? Anyways, fight breaks out and Auburn guy is tossed. At this point CMR blames the referees for his team starting fights. ???? So CMR has the team line up in a reverse V formation and run out of the stadium with a tails tucked between our legs.
Next, one of our finest sets fire to Toomers Corner with Lord knows how many people there. Innocent people. Next you look on these fine blogs on the ajc and you see UGA fans talking about how they hoped Alabama would end Fairleys career because he speared our QB after we kept chop blocking him.
And Auburn is the dirty one?
This is what I find amazing, its that the SEC didn’t come down hard on UGA. What else I find amazing is the audacity of UGA fans to post some of the worthless dribble they post here. Lastly, that Bill King is the best blogger they could find to write about UGA??
Come on AJC, get some real writers that don’t throw childish immature degrading temper tantrums on his keyboard!
