Auburn might have had more sacks had it not been for Aaron Murray's scrambling ability. (Associated Press)
Some more thoughts on Georgia’s loss to Auburn. …
As I mentioned briefly Saturday night, you can quibble with some of Mike Bobo’s calls in the game against the Tigers, particularly when he tried things (I’m thinking Branden Smith in the wildcat or screen passes to the short side of the field on third-and-long) that seemed to have much less of a chance of working than simply throwing it in A.J. Green’s direction.
And while Auburn hitman Nick Fairley (I feel the need for Purell hand sanitizer after just typing his name) is more than a handful to block, the Dogs’ pass protection faltered a bit too often Saturday. The Dogs only gave up four sacks, but that amount might have been close to doubled had it not been for Aaron Murray’s elusiveness and scrambling ability. And besides taking a lot of late hits, Murray was hurried on some key plays, like the too-high pass to Kris Durham in the end zone late in the third quarter when one of the backs missed his block.
And, yes, you can question Mark Richt running out the final 50-odd seconds of the first half rather than trying to get some more points. Perhaps he also should have been a bit more forceful in warning his kickoff return team about the possibility of an on-side kick to open the second half. And, frankly, I think he blinked in the eye-to-eye confrontation with Auburn when he called for a field goal at the end of the third quarter. When you’re in a shootout with an offense that eats up clock, you have to make the most of every possession you get.
But overall Bobo and the Georgia offense were what kept the Dogs in the game, and with the exception of the on-side kick I don’t think Richt and company got outcoached by Gene Chizik.
The reason Georgia lost against Auburn was pretty much the same reason the Dogs have lost five other games: The defense just isn’t up to current SEC or past UGA standards.
And this isn’t a complaint about Todd Grantham’s schemes. It didn’t matter what signals he called Saturday against the Tigers defense, the players on the field simply weren’t capable of stopping Cam Newton and company. The lack of a nose guard able to take control of the line of scrimmage has pretty much submarined Grantham’s attempt to install his 3-4 defense this year and unless Georgia manages to scrounge up a big JUCO player, I wonder how much better it’ll be next year.
Of course, nobody has really stopped Newton, so I’ll give them that. But as a frustrated Justin Houston lamented after the game, the Tigers did a lot of damage with players other than Newton running the reverse, including gashing the Dogs for 31 yards one time and 48 yards another time. Houston blamed “blown assignments” and defenders not being “where they were supposed to be,” adding, “Some guys weren’t as focused as they need to be and it hurt us. It’s been hurting us all season.”
Indeed it has, especially in the secondary, where Georgia’s safety play has been consistently poor. Bacarri Rambo may have snagged a key interception on a tipped ball Saturday, but otherwise his play was tentative much of the evening. And while I suppose it was to be expected that Georgia would be keying on the run since that’s Auburn’s bread and butter (that’s all they did in the third quarter), the Dogs defenders seemed to completely forget that Newton also can throw the ball. He ended up completing 12 of 15 passes (80 percent) for 148 yards and two touchdowns, and that was with a couple of drops in the first half by wide-open receivers.
Come to think of it, on just about all Auburn’s completions the receiver was open. You expect that sort of thing early in the season after a new defense has been installed. But when it’s still happening in the 11th game, you have to conclude the folks out on the field mostly just aren’t capable of getting it done.
Finally, a couple of observations on the way our so-called “country cousins” at Auburn handled this major rivalry game. Afterward, Chizik might have declared himself “disappointed” and “not happy” about two of his players getting ejected when tempers started to flare late, but as I noted in my previous blog he seemed to be doing anything but trying to keep his players’ emotions in check on the sideline.
And then there was the reaction of the Auburn fans when Georgia linebacker Reuben Faloughi went down with a leg injury in the fourth quarter, resulting in the Tigers’ hurry-up game getting slowed down momentarily.
They booed the hurt player.
Really classy. War damn eagle, indeed.

OldFan I stated at the start of this that the better team won..no whining and no excuses but news flash its not the same game you and I played in the late 60-70’s rules have changed, dirty play has not and that is what I’m upset with. If we had late hit and cheap shot Cam or other Auburn players the Auburn fans could and should raise hell at us. The chop block penalty on us was called correctly…multiple late hits and cheap shots on our QB were not…we could not stop Cam and the Auburn offense in the second half I can live with that…that Fairley is still walking around is hard to swallow…you remember how we used to deal with his type of antics “back in the day”. But we got lucky at least they didn’t turn the hoses on us..again.

Alright! I have just had enough. UGA thinks Auburn is Classless and Auburn thinks UGA is classless! I get it. Nobody is going to bend here. Auburn won. It’s over. 2 days after and everyone keeps carring on. Sorry, it’s just not worth the time and effort.
I totally agree with the defense being the key issue this year. 31 points should win most games. However, I remember just shy of a year ago when Willie was fired everyone was so happy. Most people including the UGA fans on here, agreed that with a new DC and a totally revamped defensive scheme that it would take a couple years to get it going. Ye of small memories and minds!! Good grief do you really expect to get a new DC, change the entire scheme around, don’t even have the right players in place for this defense and win every game!! Come on! Be realistic!
I hate the fact that we have lost 6 this year, but at the same time I even said at the beginning of the year that the defense would be very weak. Let TG get his players that he needs for the defense and I promise you it will be a great defense. He needs more than a year. You WILL see improvement next year over this year.
Most of you idiots(a.k.a. so called fans) want CMR to wave a magic wand and everything will be great. There was a major change in the offseason. It takes time. Ask Florida! they have lost 4 games. They have had major changes. I just don’t hear them whining as much as my so-called fellow Dawgs!
Man, Let’s just beat the snot out of tech. Play and win our bowl and get out of it a 7 win season. Yes below standards for UGA, but deal with it! This will be worth it starting next year. BTW, CMR is the right coach for us right now.

Can anybody tell me that while Newton was always dancing letting his blocks set up why we NEVER attacked. For 750K I would guess that Grantham has heard of a run blitz. Also, Rambo has not been the same since KOing himself in last years AWBARN game. Also, any news on Murray and his knee? That would have never happened if I was the head coach at UGA because after Fairly’s first late hit on Murray, I would have had my lineman shred one or both of his knees. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander!!!!!!

Going into this game I had a certain amount of respect for AU and was hoping they would continue the SEC’s streak of 4 consecutive NC’s. But after seeing their true character come out and how classless they really are I no longer have any respect for them and hope they have to forfeit all their games this year. Enjoy it while you can AU fans because it’s all going to end soon and it’s not going to be a happy ending I can assure you.

Our defensive stats have improved considerably this year, so we’re moving in the right direction. We defensed Auburn better than LSU did- the reason that game was close was field position- LSU’s punting game kept Auburn backed up so they had to go a long way to score. After seeing Newton have a banner day against LSU’s defense, I was highly concerned that we couldn’t stop them. We did pretty well in the first half, but when they tied it up by halftime, it was clear our only chance was to match them score for score. The loss to Florida is what we’ll remember, regardless of the Tech game. We can only hope Georgia finds both a play maker to replace AJ and that big JUCO noseguard BIll mentioned. The right defensive guy might like the idea of playing a 3-4 in college.

Agree, defense is not SEC quality, Rambo in particular has been horrible, with the exception of Houston, schemes are not the problem. Been going in this direction since ‘05. Got to get more talent, primarily on defense or this trend is not going to change, just get worse. However, biggest disappointment IMO this yr. is the offensive line because they were supposed to be one to the 2/3 best in the country and haven’t been close to that when you look at the whole season. They have the talent, just haven’t played to their potential, not even close, big disappointment. Defense is just not good enough, talent wise.

Can’t believe you bunch of Georgia rednecks say Auburn is classless. Georgia used to my my 2nd favorite team but Richt began letting the inmates run the asylum several years ago. Remember the Florida debacle? What about the blackout against Auburn several years ago where the entire Georgia sideline was soldja boying. Talk about classless!!
From the beginning of Saturday’s game, the Georgia thugs were provoking Auburn with their trash talking and dirty play. That’s not Auburn’s style, but you consistenly see it with Georgia. The Dogs go what they deserved…a physical ass kicking. Richt recruits punks and and he’s week on discipline. That’s a recipe for disaster and it’s catching up with him. Chizik appologized and was embarassed about the near brawl. Richt has said nothing and his bunch of thugs provoked the Auburn players the entire game.
What’s really sad is that the Georgia administration and fans have not been completely embarrassed by the actions of the football team over the past few years. Your football team is not only contributing to, but also encouraging the contiuing decline of morality and sportsmanship in sports.

Buck Belue had it right in his column yesterday. We simply DO NOT have the players on defense we need to be competitive in the SEC. From an undersized and weak DL, to three linebackers that have no business playing first string for UGA (Christian Robinson, Daryl Gamble and Marcus Dowtin). Don’t even get me started on our safeties. Bacarri Rambo is a waste by-product that loafs, is mentally weak and can’t tackle. Brandon Boykin, Akeem Dent and Alex Ogeltree are the only decent players we have. Brandon Smith is very good, but he’s not in there all the time.
On the offensive side of the ball we’ve got guys that just aren’t strong enough to compete at the top level of the SEC including Clint Boling, Josh Davis and Chris Davis. Boling and Davis got whipped on Saturday and even Jones had a hard time dealing with AU’s DL.
It’s simple, we need to stop recruiting finese and speed guys alone and start inking corn fed hawgs that curl tractors for fun. We’ve got to recruit guys who are mentally tough and not more Bacarri Rambo’s, Vance Cuffs and Jordon Love’s.
FWIW – The statistics are there for all to see. Grantham has done a great job with Willie’s players. This defense is much better than last years, we just need to get rid of the bad seeds and figure out a way to stop people on 3rd down. That’s one area that hasn’t improved under Grantham.

Either UGA is better than their record or Auburn is not as good. If Cam Newton had not played UGA would have won by two touchdowns if not more. Auburn needs to enjoy this win because they want have Newton next year and they don’t have anyone with experience to replace him.

All of the other rivals for UGA put together can’t equal the contempt and dislike we have for Auburn. I have stated this before but for the most part all of our other rivals are as clean as you can expect but dating back into the early 70’s Auburn has always played as dirty as they can. They win at all cost and most of the time hurt our QB or running back bad enough to cause them to need surgery. Murray show a lot of toughness as many time as he was hit on time and late. I hope the injury is not very bad.

There is more class in a pile of dog crap on the Dean of Auburns lawn than there is in all of Athens combined!!! BTW: “Country Cousins”????? Athens is as much of a hick town as any in the Southeast. The only thing differentiaing the cesspool of the south from every other little college town around the nation is the fact that at least you have Atlanta an hour away. That’s the only redeeming factor about Athens other than Franklins Sporting Goods. Typical delusional dawgs. Ya’ll going to win the SEC and NC next season??? @Dawgbyte,
You are dead on about the type of players currently on the defense. They are weak and can not stick to simple assignment football. Grantham and Lakatos simply don’t have much to work with right now, and that blame can be layed squarely at Richt’s door. He needs to change his recruiting philospy, and dump Garner. That is if McGarity doesn’t can his butt in 2 weeks. It could happen.

TrueBlue: The score was only 21-7 based on mistakes by AUB WRs. If the long pass to Fannin (that went through his arms) had been caught and the pass that bounced off the shoulder of the receiver and fell to a (not surprisingly) out of position Bacarri Fudd (I will use his birth name until her earns the name Rambo), the score would have been 21-14 Auburn after the first quarter and would have been a blowout by halftime. The score and the optics of the first half were very different.

I’ll start off saying this, Georgia has it’s own problems that have to be corrected and corrected quickly. The lack of discipline and structure have slowly been the demise of this team. However, UGA continues to recruit to athletes. All that being said Auburn doesn’t have a leg to stand own. Let the record show that Auburn DID have the best team in 2004 and got the ultimate shun when it came to the BCS Title game and the Title itself. In 2004 had it been any other team in the SEC like Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia or LSU, those team would have been in the title game and thus crowned National Champion. Read the SI article about Bobby Lowder and let the rest speak for itself. There is a lack of respect in CF towards Auburn – PERIOD.
Auburn ran off Terry Bowden because he didn’t conform to the regime. They were Pat Dye’s recruits but he still took the undefeated. Chizik will most likely go undefeated, but aren’t most of these kids Tubberville’s recruits? He took Auburn undefeated and would have won a NC had it not been for the lack of respect from the establishment of College Football. Tubberville was 85-40 while at Auburn garnering a 68% which isn’t far from Pat Dye’s 99-39 or 71% winning percentage.
The way Auburn treats their coaches, JET GATE, ERIC RAMSEY, Porter and now possibly CN
Finally, the Auburn family better hope nothing comes of the CN story.

UGA got beat because they gave up 49 points to a better team…that’s awful…the worst part was watching the cheap shots and poor sportsmanship from Auburn…I mean how many times did Cam lay motionless on the field and the then pop up smiling…was he faking an injury? I don’t even know what that was…or the punch/smack instead of a stiff-arm move. One would hope for more class and humility from someone blessed with an 11-0 season, Heisman trophy aspirations, and adoring fans….but then we are talking about a common thief that stole a computer and tossed it out a window…I have no doubt Cam will be addicted to crack or in prison within 10 years….thug.

I can’t believe some of the stuff people actually put in writing on the blog. Amazing. The fans were not booing because the UGA player was hurt. They were booing because he was coming off the field on his own when the UGA coaches told him to turn around and stay out there and lay down. Did anyone else hear the TV announcer say that “Not calling personal fouls is why things like this happen” after the Georgia O-line tackled Fairley. Officiating this year has sucked and not just in the SEC. And, yes, I did hear the announcer say that the UGA coaches were telling the kid to stay down. Sad to say it, but it seems “sportsmanship” is an antiquated term, too. College football used to be fun and I enjoyed all the rivalries, even rooting for Florida, Auburn, other SEC teams as long as they were playing someone besides UGA. Now, it’s just ugly and thats too bad. One last thing, is anyone else SICK AND TIRED OF THE “UNANSWERED POINTS” catch phrase? God Help us, please! And its always used when the team that was DOWN by 10, 14, 17, 24, pick a number, managed to score some points. You NEVER hear it used when a team is up 10, 14, 17, 24, pick a number to 0. Example: UGA 21 – Auburn 7 – no mention of “14 unanswered points by Georgia.” Auburn ties score – “Thats 14 unanswered points by Auburn.” Thats just my example, same thing happend in the Texas A&M – Baylor game, or any other game. OK, I’m off my soapbox. God Bless America!

Enjoy this year while you can Auburn punks. Your 1-year mercenary QB will be gone soon and you’ll be back to normal. If they didn’t already know it, everyone in the country saw how classless your program is last Saturday (from the Head Coach on down, not to mention the “Bobby Lowders” associated with your program over the years). All your wins this year may be a moot point anyway once the NCAA finishes its investigation. Good luck.

First: the Death Penalty is off the table. Be smart: the NCAA has already said they’d never do that again, and why in the heck would they kill the cash cow that is SEC Football???
Second: Fairley was repeatedly hitting Murray after he released the ball and DRIVING HIM INTO THE GROUND several times, including a couple in the first quarter (before the chop block, if you’re keeping track). That is an attempt to injure, and is ‘dirty’. There’s no defense. And this isn’t an opinion of just the UGA fans: National pundits covered it as well. That he wasn’t taken aside and told to stop by his coaches is why Auburn is pretty much universally loathed by Georgia fans today.
Third: I didn’t see the coach pointing to the ground, and even if I did, I would guess that he was telling the kid to not take a chance and let the trainers check it out. The fact is that- at that point- the extra time wasn’t going to help UGA anyway, so the AU fans booing was classless and ludicrous.
Fourth: Cam Newton clearly has a sense of entitlement, the way he consistently celebrated with the crowd rather than his teammates.
It just was a really ugly, classless performance by Auburn, and given that the FBI is now investigating the Cam Newton situation, I don’t think this ends well for Auburn. Kind of sad to me at least, because I literally almost went to Auburn instead of Georgia…

Georgia is not playing the way we feel like they should this year! They didn’t play well last year either! Why can’t we get the talent to come to Ga.? I think high school players are learning things about the Ga. coaches, and are going to schools where they can expect to be coached up and learn how to play better ball! These coaches have reached the limits of their potential!! Time to clean house and start over! The Richt era is coming to an end! All his recruiting flops have been on public view for several years now! An occasional blue-chipper will do well, but overall, prospects have been rather dim lately!

Hmmmm. Seems like GA takes exception when the shoe’s on the other foot. It’s ok to taunt and take late hits when it’s GA doing the dirty deed, but when they get hammered on National TV, here come the “holier than thou” losers!! Not so much fun when it happens to you is it?
