Georgia-Auburn: Bringing a great rivalry home

ga. auburn house dividedIt’s a shame the whole Cam Newton soap opera has overshadowed one of college football’s oldest and most competitive rivalries this week.

As I’ve said before, Georgia-Auburn is my favorite of the Dogs’ rivalries. I think it’s one of the best rivalries in college football. It has so much going for it: the proximity of the two schools, the many ties between them (including Vince Dooley and Pat Dye) and the fact that it’s been a remarkably even series, with the Dogs having a chance to tie up the all-time record this year with a win. One of the most oft-cited statistics involves the fact that even in cumulative scoring it’s pretty even, with Georgia leading all-time 1,778 to 1,722. In what other series does anyone even look at that?

It’s also been a great rivalry on the field, as I noted last year with my list of the 10 greatest Georgia wins over Auburn. So many memories, from “between the hoses” to “Look at the sugar falling out of the sky,” from Uga V trying to take a bite out of Robert Baker and the SEC’s first overtime game to “70-X Takeoff” to Soulja Boy and the first blackout and even Bacarri Rambo valiantly raising his arm to the crowd as he was wheeled off the field after knocking himself out with a game-winning pass breakup last year.

I’ve also noted in the past that, unlike some rivals’ fans, I don’t hate Auburn folks, but that some Georgia fans who live closer to the so-called loveliest village on the Plain have somewhat more intense feelings about the people who cry “War Eagle!”

Lisa and John Sosebee are on opposite sides in this rivalry but "understand" each other. (Special)

Lisa and John Sosebee are on opposite sides in this rivalry but "understand" each other. (Special)

Of course, being as close to each other as they are, Auburn and Georgia split a lot of families, as is symbolized by those popular “House Divided” flags and welcome mats. One of the households flying that “House Divided” flag belongs to my longtime friend John Sosebee, a die-hard Bulldogs supporter who now lives in Anniston, Ala., with his lovely wife Lisa, an AU fan who “bleeds orange and blue,” as she says.

I asked Lisa for her take on this year’s renewal of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry and she graciously responded:

“Because I am married to a diehard Dawg Fan, I love to see Georgia win (hey, I even own a Georgia T-shirt) … I just don’t want to see them win THIS week.”

Lisa notes correctly that “Auburn certainly has the talent to beat Georgia, and not just because of the Caminator. While he’s been a definite asset to this year’s squad, the entire team has just been on fire! When the season started, I wasn’t all that optimistic — if someone had told me we’d be undefeated at this point, I would have laughed. But week to week, as we won … it seemed the team had found the ‘groove’ to keep it going. The coaching staff definitely found the right formula to make things work. And who wouldn’t agree that winning is much more fun than losing? However, I try to always be cautiously optimistic about each game. Auburn has, in the past, been known to bring a different team to each game. This week, they MUST bring the ‘A’ team and wrap up this SEC thing. Auburn has everything to gain. … Georgia has everything to prove.

“The only year AU has celebrated a win over UGA since I married a ‘Dawg man’ was in 2005, and it was a heart-stopping game. I’ve been reminded that Georgia has pulled out a win four years in a row. Remember, I’m married to a Dawg. I had to endure him wearing the ‘Blackout’ shirt, and various other score shirts throughout our six years of marriage.”

Despite Auburn being favored by eight-plus points, Lisa says this game “really is a toss up — Georgia might surprise us all, even my Dawg of a hubby.”

But, she added, “I’ll stick with my Dawg either way. Warrrrr Eagle!!”

As for John, he says, “Living in the alien, sometimes hostile territory known as Alabama for the last six years has evoked some funny remarks, stares, and sometimes rude comments. But then I have to consider the source of them; either from a trailer-trash bunch known as ‘Bammers’ who seem to get the image of Bear Bryant in his checkered hat and Nick Saban confused, or the fan-atics of the Polytechnic Institute who have had a decent season this year finally, with a really good quarterback and a mediocre defense, and a lot of luck, and now think they are invincible and cannot be defeated.”

With UGA having a very disappointing year, John said, “I have heard some comments made but not near as many as I have offered. Most folks here who know me by now acccept that I bleed red and black and will die that way. It is just hard to find ‘decent’ clothing over here, namely with the likeness of Uga on them or even just a big GEORGIA, but the state line is only 43 miles away.”

Lisa went too far in dressing Corky up in AU colors, John says. (Special)

Lisa went too far in dressing Corky up in AU colors, John says. (Special)

He and his spouse “understand” each other’s devotion to their respective schools, he said, “and actually enjoy watching each other’s teams, except that one day a year.”

He draws the line, though, at Lisa recently dressing his dog Corky up in orange and blue for a Facebook photo. “Sabotaging Corky, who doesn’t know better, is a different story…”

I get the feeling Lisa hasn’t heard the end of that.

Looking to Saturday, John said, “I hope we ‘TAME THE TIGER’ and spoil their chances to play in the SEC Championship.”

His prediction, by the way: UGA 38, AU 35

Thanks, John, for flying the red and black colors deep in enemy territory.

I really don’t HATE Auburn the way I HATE Georgia Tech and Florida.

Maybe because they are not sore winners the way the others are? Even though we don’t have to deal with Tech being sore winner, but once or twice a decade, you would still think by listening to them that they have a 9-1 ratio advantage in our Rivalry.

If Auburn wins this weekend, all I can do is tip my hat and wish them well against Bama.

Bill, you bring up an interesting perspective. For those of us who live in border areas, the “big” wins are always different. Unfortunately, we live in an area with mostly UT fans, then we have Bama. So, the UT game is one of our biggest. (nothing will ever top the true rivalry of UF, but when you have the smack talk of the different areas, it makes certain victories sweeter)

But, like most people in the Southeast, most of our friends are a mixed bag of Alma Maters, so we get to have our smack-fests every weekend except games like U-La-La & Idaho St. It’s fun & most of the time clean, but I could never imagine marrying into a different Alma Mater!!!! That would be torture.

UGA has a great opportunity tomorrow, but I hope that CMR will put an end to the rumors about him going to Miami. The Dawgs need to know that CMR is here to stay. I don’t think that he would leave Athens for Miami. He has stated that he wants to stay at UGA. Hopefully Adams will offer him a long term contract to keep him here. Regardless what the Richt haters say–we cannot afford to lose the best coach in our history.

Auburn wins by outscoring people, not b/c of their defense. Yeah, they got an awesome guy on the D line, but one guy does not make a defense the way one guy can make an offense (Newton). If we get lucky with a few defensive stops, we can win this thing. Too bad we haven’t shown at any time this year that we can stop a spread rushing attack.

GA didn’t hire a DC for a coach he was a DL coach at Dallas. He’s not a coordinator. No wonder the defense can’t stop shinola. He won’t be able to stop AU’s running game and UGA won’t outscore AU. UGA is ordinary sad to say. Its not even game day and lots of dog fans are already getting prepared for more of the same lame defense and predictable offensive play calling. Clearly, the dawgs need a change in coaching. Including CMR.

But back this can’t stop anyone. Putting aside that the numbers are actually pretty good this year, so your point is not so much supported with facts as feeling, you are really going to summerize the UGA situation at defense halfway through his first year? Just curious as to what amazing turnaround from a first year defensive co-ordinator hire you are using as a comparison.

Cesar,I personally do not think Richt leaves Athens. He loves it here. However if Miami fires their coach–Richt is their #1 choice. They want him now and they want him bad. Their problem is that they do not have the kind of money that UGA has. Very interesting possible scenario developing. Some folks want Richt fired. Miami wants Richt. Most insiders know that Richt is a great coach for the long haul at UGA. The interesting scenario is that instead of Richt getting fired–he gets a raise to stay through his contract at least. Wouldn’t that be wild? Instead of getting fired, he gets a raise because Miami (and other schools) are so interested in Richt.

Auburn is my favorite rivalry as well. Like you said, Bill, Auburn folks don’t make my blood boil like those folks in orange the other shade of blue. In contrast to the swamp folks, they’ve always been classy losers and gracious winners. Plus, the teams are always pretty evenly matched and they always give us fans a great game.

I like the Dawgs’ chances if Thugzilla sits (keeping my fingers crossed on that one). Otherwise, I don’t know if this team has it in them to stop a player like that. That being said, Georgia is due a big victory this year. The fans need it, the players need it and the coaching staff needs it.

Regardless, I’ll be cheering loud and proud on Saturday. Go Dawgs!! Sic ‘em!

Why would Miami want to hire a guy who can’t get it done at a school with UNLIMITED resources, only to come to their school where there are limits? Get real guys. I think this Miami talk is only wishful thinking for those in denial about the state that Richt has let his program fall to. Not only are the Dawgs losing to everyone who matters, but they are an embarrassment off of the field with all of the arrests. Will he turn it around? Possibly, but I think a better question is why did he let it get to this state in the first place?

Glad people aren’t arguing on the blog about whether Newton should play. I would be very disappointed if he sat because the quality of the game would go down drastically and a Georgia win would be tainted. With our record (5-5 and our best win against Kentucky), better to lose with Cam playing that win against a de-Cammed Tiger. I was shocked at how he ran all over LSU but LSU didn’t find an offense until the Alabama game. Even if we can’t stop him, Georgia has the capacity to stay alive in a shoot-out. If we play a little D, it could be a good day for the Dawgs. BTW, I live in Baton Rouge and LSU fans are seriously pulling for the Dawgs, it’s funny to listen to them on local talk radio…

It’s Game Day guys/gals (even though I think I’m the only gal on here most times..haha)!!! In less than 8 hours, it’s showtime!!!

We have the players to win, they simply need to play to 90% of their ability & we will win. I would prefer 100%, but we can do 90 & win. Like most Dawgs, I prefer Cam to play, that way there are no excuses after we win. Yes, I feel that good. We have an opportunity today & I pray we take it. I hope I see more Murray play calling than Bobo. I don’t know if most have watched, but his (CMB)expressions after our good offensive plays says a lot. Especially when a successful play greets an “angry” Bobo on the sidelines. It’s been very interesting. In my occupation, I must not only listen to people carefully, but must watch them carefully & I’ve watched the reactions. I believe someone on another blog said it in the last two days that it seems as if there is some play calling going on in the huddle & it doesn’t seem to be Bobo’s plays. Could be interesting at season end to see if the O has a long discussion with CMR about this.

Anyway, I really look forward to the game today. I have strong hope & prayers our guys go out & play like they can. I believe we can do it whether CN is out there or not. Upset, upset, upset……I feel it in my bones.

I must add, the SEC is about to have a huge black eye because of CN. I am a true believer in innocent until proven guilty, but there are too many pieces falling together. I’ve heard people say, “well, it can’t be true or we would have heard about it sooner” or “MSU is the only one at fault here, why would they not divulge the info to the NCAA until July”. Well, I would like to correct these people. Investigations take a while & also, in MSU’s part, they didn’t get the information to the SEC until July. From what I understand, they have been more than cooperative with the NCAA since January. If anyone knows anything about business, they would know that sometimes they (let’s say MSU) have to go above their boss (let’s say the SEC) to make sure things happen the way they should (by going to the NCAA). Three schools will take a fall because of this guy. UF, MSU & AU……I hate this is happening. So Dawgs fans, please don’t complain because we didn’t “get” him. We didn’t highly recruit him anyway & UF was tired of dealing with him.

When the puzzle is complete, it’s not going to be one where those of us in the SEC say, “Awwww, how pretty”. We will be defending our conference to the SEC haters in our country. UGH!

GO DAWGS!!! SIC ‘EM!!!!

uga’s girls, there is NO WAY that the freshman QB is ad-lib calling new and different plays in the huddle that conflict with what was just sent in from the sideline. What he is doing is taking the (called) play formation with its 5 or 6 options, looks at how the defense is lined up, and then he decides at the line For example, do they have a safety over the top of AJ, or did they trot him up for run support. That is would result in a completely different play developing. As different as a long pass down the sideline to a simply run up the middle. But no, he is not calling plays that weren’t Coach Bobo’s. (I also would question how somebody can distinguish what doesn’t seem to be Bobo’s play.) I’m sure he is starting to run the offense more from the field as the season progresses, though, by design. The reason that you see Coach Bobo being animated is that he is pointing out stuff to his QB who is still learning. I would venture to say that he does that most times Murray walks over the sideline, even after a score. Perhaps about a few plays earlier. You can sometimes catch the coaches mention a play in the postgame that ended up being positive, but a better option was open for a huge gain had it been recognized.

Your observations are keen, but I don’t think your interpretation is correct.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

That’s life – AltamahaDawg said what I would’ve said if he hadn’t beaten me to it. And his error in spelling was a typo. Don’t be so fast to correct someone in a blog where typing is so fast paced. His comment was spot on – the writer in question is a rival jerk… and you aren’t far from it. Get a life.

Oh, and BTW, college is forever… don’t you ever get tired of your shameless promotions? Just asking…

A few questions from Safety Sam:

1.) Why kick a field goal in the 2nd half when you know your defense can’t stop Auburn’s rushing attack? At that point you have pretty much set up a situation when (after Auburn scores ) you are down by 2 possessions.

2.) Why take a knee at the end of the game when you are losing? Okay, perhaps a little thing to most but it shows a lack of spirit. Throw the ball downfield. I have never seen that in a game before.

3.) What are we going to do to get prepared for Georgia Tech? We have a week off. I wouldn’t be surprised if we start that game sluggish with no game plan.

Have had enough. FIRE RICHT. 10 years, and this is it? All these top classes, all these top players. NOTHING. Want to wait 25 years like we did with Dooley? Maybe one national title, maybe not. All the good means nothing when you don’t win consistently and put yourself in the running for titles. Not a hater. Just a realist. Love my Dawgs, always will. Just sick with the current staff. DO WE MOVE FORWARD UGA ????

As we lick our wounds from this latest defeat, I hope that I don’t have to read a lot of comments concerning how “classless” Auburn is as a program.

The bottom line? If you don’t like big hits on your QB then block the damn Defensive line.

The way you quiet a “classless” team is to win…anything else is complaining.

Typical Auburn win, let the refs do it for you and take dirty shots at the QB…Shows what kind of class Auburn is. Not to mention the Head Coach when he lets the dirty player continue to play. I hope the SEC and the NCAA comes down hard on Auburn and it’s dirty/Illegal players.

Safety Sam, are you freaking serious? You don’t block after the play is blown dead…Fairley deserves every chop block coming his way.

Safety Sam, “Why take a knee at the end of the game when you are losing? Okay, perhaps a little thing to most but it shows a lack of spirit. Throw the ball downfield. I have never seen that in a game before.” Uhhhh…because a fight was breaking out every play. Frankly, I was dam* proud to see the players stick up for their QB at the end…there was plenty of spirit.

WHATS THE DEAL, it seems to me that there are some serious issues within the program. Talent, this is probably the most talented team we’ve had. I’m just sick of seeing the lack of effort with the fans and players. Every close game we have a chance to win, but time after time we’re left scratching our heads. WILDCAT? We ran the WILDCAT at a critical point of the game………REALLY? It just seems like when we have a chance to take over we don’t. I’m just ready for us to play up to our potential, at whatever the cost. I’m behind Mark Richt all the way, but something’s got to give and it starts with him.

I have never actually rooted for Tech to defeat Georgia. I love Bulldogs. I bleed black and gold. Unfortunately I have reached my limit. I see clearly. I know where my beloved Bulldogs are heading under Mark Wretch. If it takes a loss to the Yellow Jackets so be it. These losers do not deserve to be in bowl anyway. My wife was livid over fumble on TD. I made her angrier when I said good for Tigers. If heartless head coach does not care then why should I? All of Bulldog Nation should feel the same. True fans that is! STENDEK

Mark Wretch said it took the Bulldogs a damn long time to reach the dungeon of SEC. He is sure not to leave dungeon without a fight! Last place is good. For folks like Wretch and Mike Dodo. Hefty checks come in regularly. No accountability. All is roses and sunshine in Wretch world! STENDEK

Well of course Auburn is “classless” and “cheaters”…..you have to come up with some way to justify the whipping you just took. They beat the dawgs on the scoreboard, in the fights and then rubbed your face in it..HAHAHA

Well, all I can say is this is sad….let me preface this by saying UGA is my #2 team and always has been because my families roots are in GA…second only to AU. I have always thought of UGA fans as having class until reading several of the posts from after the game tonight. Fairley didn’t take a cheap shot on your QB…in fact, it looked like he was blocked into him and only then banged is leg with his helmet. The lack of class that ensued was what is sad. UGA players going after Fairley and doing it in a classless cheap way at that. I don’t condone the punches that were thrown (open handed slaps in reality) either but can understand that response to what UGA players were attempting to do to Fairley. As far as calling Au cheaters or thugs….it’s funny….maybe UGA should sweep around their own back door first…plenty of dirt there too. Bottom line is AU whipped the dogs, period. Get over it as I’m sure it couldn’t have been that much of a surprise.
