Georgia-Auburn: Bringing a great rivalry home

ga. auburn house dividedIt’s a shame the whole Cam Newton soap opera has overshadowed one of college football’s oldest and most competitive rivalries this week.

As I’ve said before, Georgia-Auburn is my favorite of the Dogs’ rivalries. I think it’s one of the best rivalries in college football. It has so much going for it: the proximity of the two schools, the many ties between them (including Vince Dooley and Pat Dye) and the fact that it’s been a remarkably even series, with the Dogs having a chance to tie up the all-time record this year with a win. One of the most oft-cited statistics involves the fact that even in cumulative scoring it’s pretty even, with Georgia leading all-time 1,778 to 1,722. In what other series does anyone even look at that?

It’s also been a great rivalry on the field, as I noted last year with my list of the 10 greatest Georgia wins over Auburn. So many memories, from “between the hoses” to “Look at the sugar falling out of the sky,” from Uga V trying to take a bite out of Robert Baker and the SEC’s first overtime game to “70-X Takeoff” to Soulja Boy and the first blackout and even Bacarri Rambo valiantly raising his arm to the crowd as he was wheeled off the field after knocking himself out with a game-winning pass breakup last year.

I’ve also noted in the past that, unlike some rivals’ fans, I don’t hate Auburn folks, but that some Georgia fans who live closer to the so-called loveliest village on the Plain have somewhat more intense feelings about the people who cry “War Eagle!”

Lisa and John Sosebee are on opposite sides in this rivalry but "understand" each other. (Special)

Lisa and John Sosebee are on opposite sides in this rivalry but "understand" each other. (Special)

Of course, being as close to each other as they are, Auburn and Georgia split a lot of families, as is symbolized by those popular “House Divided” flags and welcome mats. One of the households flying that “House Divided” flag belongs to my longtime friend John Sosebee, a die-hard Bulldogs supporter who now lives in Anniston, Ala., with his lovely wife Lisa, an AU fan who “bleeds orange and blue,” as she says.

I asked Lisa for her take on this year’s renewal of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry and she graciously responded:

“Because I am married to a diehard Dawg Fan, I love to see Georgia win (hey, I even own a Georgia T-shirt) … I just don’t want to see them win THIS week.”

Lisa notes correctly that “Auburn certainly has the talent to beat Georgia, and not just because of the Caminator. While he’s been a definite asset to this year’s squad, the entire team has just been on fire! When the season started, I wasn’t all that optimistic — if someone had told me we’d be undefeated at this point, I would have laughed. But week to week, as we won … it seemed the team had found the ‘groove’ to keep it going. The coaching staff definitely found the right formula to make things work. And who wouldn’t agree that winning is much more fun than losing? However, I try to always be cautiously optimistic about each game. Auburn has, in the past, been known to bring a different team to each game. This week, they MUST bring the ‘A’ team and wrap up this SEC thing. Auburn has everything to gain. … Georgia has everything to prove.

“The only year AU has celebrated a win over UGA since I married a ‘Dawg man’ was in 2005, and it was a heart-stopping game. I’ve been reminded that Georgia has pulled out a win four years in a row. Remember, I’m married to a Dawg. I had to endure him wearing the ‘Blackout’ shirt, and various other score shirts throughout our six years of marriage.”

Despite Auburn being favored by eight-plus points, Lisa says this game “really is a toss up — Georgia might surprise us all, even my Dawg of a hubby.”

But, she added, “I’ll stick with my Dawg either way. Warrrrr Eagle!!”

As for John, he says, “Living in the alien, sometimes hostile territory known as Alabama for the last six years has evoked some funny remarks, stares, and sometimes rude comments. But then I have to consider the source of them; either from a trailer-trash bunch known as ‘Bammers’ who seem to get the image of Bear Bryant in his checkered hat and Nick Saban confused, or the fan-atics of the Polytechnic Institute who have had a decent season this year finally, with a really good quarterback and a mediocre defense, and a lot of luck, and now think they are invincible and cannot be defeated.”

With UGA having a very disappointing year, John said, “I have heard some comments made but not near as many as I have offered. Most folks here who know me by now acccept that I bleed red and black and will die that way. It is just hard to find ‘decent’ clothing over here, namely with the likeness of Uga on them or even just a big GEORGIA, but the state line is only 43 miles away.”

Lisa went too far in dressing Corky up in AU colors, John says. (Special)

Lisa went too far in dressing Corky up in AU colors, John says. (Special)

He and his spouse “understand” each other’s devotion to their respective schools, he said, “and actually enjoy watching each other’s teams, except that one day a year.”

He draws the line, though, at Lisa recently dressing his dog Corky up in orange and blue for a Facebook photo. “Sabotaging Corky, who doesn’t know better, is a different story…”

I get the feeling Lisa hasn’t heard the end of that.

Looking to Saturday, John said, “I hope we ‘TAME THE TIGER’ and spoil their chances to play in the SEC Championship.”

His prediction, by the way: UGA 38, AU 35

Thanks, John, for flying the red and black colors deep in enemy territory.

Go Dogs!

I really don’t HATE Auburn the way I HATE Georgia Tech and Florida.

Maybe because they are not sore winners the way the others are? Even though we don’t have to deal with Tech being sore winner, but once or twice a decade, you would still think by listening to them that they have a 9-1 ratio advantage in our Rivalry.

If Auburn wins this weekend, all I can do is tip my hat and wish them well against Bama.

Bill, you bring up an interesting perspective. For those of us who live in border areas, the “big” wins are always different. Unfortunately, we live in an area with mostly UT fans, then we have Bama. So, the UT game is one of our biggest. (nothing will ever top the true rivalry of UF, but when you have the smack talk of the different areas, it makes certain victories sweeter)

But, like most people in the Southeast, most of our friends are a mixed bag of Alma Maters, so we get to have our smack-fests every weekend except games like U-La-La & Idaho St. It’s fun & most of the time clean, but I could never imagine marrying into a different Alma Mater!!!! That would be torture.

Bama #2, I will also take that deal!!!

This will be the first time this season that Auburn has faced a 3-4 Defense.

Time to step it up Grantham. Throw things at them they would have never expected. You MUST instill a “nothing to lose” attitude in the D this week.

I thought the 2005 team was potentially a national champion team.

That bunch couldn’t catch a break.

Had to play florida without Shockley. I truly believe that DJ would have destroyed Florida that day and Urban’s legacy would be a whole lot different.

UGA has a great opportunity tomorrow, but I hope that CMR will put an end to the rumors about him going to Miami. The Dawgs need to know that CMR is here to stay. I don’t think that he would leave Athens for Miami. He has stated that he wants to stay at UGA. Hopefully Adams will offer him a long term contract to keep him here. Regardless what the Richt haters say–we cannot afford to lose the best coach in our history.

Auburn wins by outscoring people, not b/c of their defense. Yeah, they got an awesome guy on the D line, but one guy does not make a defense the way one guy can make an offense (Newton). If we get lucky with a few defensive stops, we can win this thing. Too bad we haven’t shown at any time this year that we can stop a spread rushing attack.

GA didn’t hire a DC for a coach he was a DL coach at Dallas. He’s not a coordinator. No wonder the defense can’t stop shinola. He won’t be able to stop AU’s running game and UGA won’t outscore AU. UGA is ordinary sad to say. Its not even game day and lots of dog fans are already getting prepared for more of the same lame defense and predictable offensive play calling. Clearly, the dawgs need a change in coaching. Including CMR.

AZ, no co-ordinator was one till they were. Was Smart or srong Co-ordinator before somebody made them one. And actually TG unlike them, was one before, just not at his current job.

But back this can’t stop anyone. Putting aside that the numbers are actually pretty good this year, so your point is not so much supported with facts as feeling, you are really going to summerize the UGA situation at defense halfway through his first year? Just curious as to what amazing turnaround from a first year defensive co-ordinator hire you are using as a comparison.

Cesar,I personally do not think Richt leaves Athens. He loves it here. However if Miami fires their coach–Richt is their #1 choice. They want him now and they want him bad. Their problem is that they do not have the kind of money that UGA has. Very interesting possible scenario developing. Some folks want Richt fired. Miami wants Richt. Most insiders know that Richt is a great coach for the long haul at UGA. The interesting scenario is that instead of Richt getting fired–he gets a raise to stay through his contract at least. Wouldn’t that be wild? Instead of getting fired, he gets a raise because Miami (and other schools) are so interested in Richt.

Auburn is my favorite rivalry as well. Like you said, Bill, Auburn folks don’t make my blood boil like those folks in orange the other shade of blue. In contrast to the swamp folks, they’ve always been classy losers and gracious winners. Plus, the teams are always pretty evenly matched and they always give us fans a great game.

I like the Dawgs’ chances if Thugzilla sits (keeping my fingers crossed on that one). Otherwise, I don’t know if this team has it in them to stop a player like that. That being said, Georgia is due a big victory this year. The fans need it, the players need it and the coaching staff needs it.

Regardless, I’ll be cheering loud and proud on Saturday. Go Dawgs!! Sic ‘em!

Why would Miami want to hire a guy who can’t get it done at a school with UNLIMITED resources, only to come to their school where there are limits? Get real guys. I think this Miami talk is only wishful thinking for those in denial about the state that Richt has let his program fall to. Not only are the Dawgs losing to everyone who matters, but they are an embarrassment off of the field with all of the arrests. Will he turn it around? Possibly, but I think a better question is why did he let it get to this state in the first place?

All the CAM stuff aside, Both teams are basically at full strength and UGA has averaged .52 more points against Auburn at Auburn.

I do enjoy the rivalry. It’s one of the best in the nation. I respect Auburn. Of course I want the Dawgs to win every game but I won’t be crushed if Auburn wins like I am when the Dawgs lose to Tennessee, Florida or Georgia Tech. Meaning I don’t have much respect for those teams for various and sundry reasons. Tennessee did move up very slightly in my regard when they hired Dooley.
